Wesley Bazaar Expands To Two Locations By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The annual Christmas craft bazaar hosted by Wesley Church has expanded to two locations. This year, the event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, and at Colerain Church, 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood. “The Wesley Church location is full, and since Colerain Church has just recently become a part of Wesley, it was decided to see if any vendors on the wait list would like to sell their items at the Colerain Church location, which is only 2 miles south of Wesley Church,” coordinator Bonnie Aukamp explained. The bazaar at Colerain will be a smaller version of the one at Wesley. Breakfast and lunch foods will be available at both sites, and vendors at both locations will sell sweets and treats as well. Between the two venues, shoppers will be able to buy wooden toys and other items, health and beauty supplies, candles, painted signs, wreaths,
handcrafted jewelry and hair pieces, artwork and photography, seasonal and home décor, pet items, and knitted, crocheted, or sewn goods, along with much more. One of the vendor booths at Wesley has been reserved by The A-Team. The group meets at Wesley on two Thursdays a month and on Sunday mornings. It offers a safe place where people with intellectual and physical disabilities can socialize, have fun, and grow spiritually. Special needs coordinator Tami Shaub noted that the group is still planning what all it will sell at the bazaar, but popcorn, cookie gift plates, and crafts are on the confirmed list. “This opportunity just came up, so we are still trying to figure it all out,” Shaub said. Proceeds from the Christmas craft bazaar will go to Wesley Church’s discretionary fund. For more information about Wesley Church, readers may visit www.wesleyqville.org, call the church at 717-786-8322, or email info@wesleyqville.org.
Bethany Christian School Dedicates Family Life Center By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Bethany Christian School social media coordinator Katie Arter (left) and development director Kelly Cudicio recently announced that the school’s newly renovated Family Life Center has been dedicated to the memory of Kitty June Shepherd, one of the founding members of the school. The facility is now known as the Kitty June Shepherd gymnasium.
When Bethany Christian School in Oxford held its annual fundraising banquet on Oct. 19, the evening’s program included a special surprise. “We celebrated a lady by the name of Kitty June Shepherd, who contributed so much to our school,” explained development director Kelly Cudicio. “(The banquet) was part fundraising and part dedication of the Family Life Center in her honor.” Shepherd was one of the founding members of the school, which was started as a preschool in 1980 in the basement of Bethany Presbyterian Church. As children grew, new grades were added until the school included See Bethany Christian School pg 2

known as the Kitty June Shepherd gymnasium, also serves as a gathering place for the community. Added to the school building in 1997, the space was in need of updating. Contributions from last year’s fundraiser enabled the school to install a new floor, update lighting and sound systems, paint and add new basketball hoops, a scoreboard and bleachers. Deb Bakelez, one of the foundation teachers of the school, paid tribute to Shepherd during the fundraising banquet, concentrating on Shepherd’s desire to serve at Bethany. A dedication plaque was revealed, followed by student performances and a banquet dinner in the newly refurbished gym. Arter made the financial appeal during the dinner. Proceeds earned this year will be allocated for education enhancements, such as textbooks, whiteboards and classroom materials. The school also announced that it will hold a Christmas program on Thursday, Dec. 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church, located at 2483 Baltimore Pike, Oxford. classes through eighth grade, as it does today. The school moved into its own building in 1996. One of the members of the first graduating class was a granddaughter of Shepherd, who was a physical education teacher in the early years of the school and a volunteer throughout her life. Shepherd passed away in March of this year, but her connection to the school lives on. “She was such an important part of Bethany Christian School, and we felt it was awesome to honor her memory and give her a lasting legacy so that everyone knows, when they come to Bethany Christian School, that Mrs. Shepherd had a very important role in the school and left a legacy,” said Katie Arter, social media coordinator. “Her husband, Bill Shepherd, was extremely honored to have that.” Shepherd was particularly known for her volunteerism. “She holds the record for most volunteer hours,” Arter said, noting that Shepherd helped establish the foundation for what the school has become today. Shepherd was also known as a devoted member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church. “Everybody knew her, and she knew everybody. She had a heart for God and a heart for children,” Arter said. “There’s not many people on this Earth like her, and she’s left such a legacy. Everybody who knew her too seems to have a lit piece of Kitty in their heart.” The Family Life Center, now

Most people like to sing traditional carols, Myers remarked. “It’s a great way to kick off the season. Swords-Wang has been involved with music practically her entire life. She played cello in school and studied piano for many years. Swords-Wang worked as a pianist and organist at Boehm’s United Methodist Church (UMC), which grew out of the chapel. She now serves Saint Paul’s UMC in Mountville and Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church in Brownstown. Singing opera was a hobby that led her to the harp. While performing with the Lancaster Opera Workshop in the mid-1990s, Swords-Wang had the opportunity to observe Jane Brye’s skill at the strings. “She played her harp so beautifully, Swords-Wang recalled. Ever since that first year of lessons, SwordsWang has been in demand at weddings and on other special occasions. This will be the second time she has performed for the chapel’s Advent service, and she is looking forward to playing in the 1791 structure, which will be minimally decorated with holly, ivy, and candles. “It’s stark and echoey, and it has great acoustics, SwordsWang commented. “Early Methodist services were pretty plain, Myers pointed out. “The Mennonites were a big influence here. The public is welcome to attend the Advent service free of charge, but donations will be accepted. The Smith Singers are putting together a cookbook of the Smith Singers’ favorite recipes, according to Smith Middle School music teacher Karen Gagliardi. Proceeds will benefit the 2018-19 Smith Singers. Gagliardi noted that the group is looking for recipes in all categories to be used as part of the Smith Singers’ cookbook. Recipes can be emailed to Gagliardi at karen_gagliardi@solancosd.org or LeAnn Todd at toddatude@ gmail.com. Those submitting recipes should include their name, where the recipe came from, and anything else they would like organizers to know.
loskeletal pain syndrome (AMPS), which is similar to figromyalgia. Wheeler returned to duPont two to three times a week for treatments. Wheeler’s mother shared, “Thankfully, through God’s grace, an amazing counselor, and running, she has been able to embrace the pain as a part of life that not only acts as her stress gauge, but as an unconscious comparison of how happy times are to be cherished. A genuine laugh is a joy-filled gift that should not be taken for granted.” Last spring, Wheeler trained for and ran a marathon as a fundraiser for the children of the AMPS unit at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She was hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon, but at mile 7 her AMPS pain level kicked in and she became violently ill.

Solanco’s Hannah Wheeler was the recipient of the Courageous Runner Award presented at the L-L League Cross-Country Banquet on Nov. 5.
R025002
Solanco’s cross-country teams officially capped their seasons with an end-of-the-year banquet held at the DoubleTree in Willow Street on Nov. 12. Head coach Craig Ausel and his staff recapped the season and presented awards. The Coach Harrington Outstanding Runner Award went to seniors Ben Stickler and Aubree Roop. Hannah Wheeler and Dan Keller received the Waggoner Scholar Athlete Award. Receiving the Coach Haines Golden Mule Award were Colin Althoff and Chesley Ledesma. The Coach Rhodes 5th Runner Award recipients were Nathan Eller and Sarah Snyder, while freshmen Avery Jacobsen and Halle Brown received the Solanco XC Alumni Award. Evelyn Billings was presented with the Heart and Soul Award. The banquet opened with the announcement of Sue Thomas and Nate Spangler as this year’s Cross-Country Hall of Fame Award winners presented by former head coach Art Harrington. In other cross-country news, Dan Keller, Angel Daniel, and Hannah Wheeler were recognized as Scholar Athletes (3.7 GPA or higher) at the LancasterLebanon League Cross Country Banquet on Nov. 5. Wheeler also received a standing ovation after receiving the L-L League Cross Country Coaches Association’s Courageous Runner Award for her journey the past two years. In the spring of 2016, Wheeler underwent tarsal tunnel release surgery in hopes of alleviating foot pain, but the pain spread to her other foot and hands. She began to drop things and frequently tripped because she could not control her feet. As the stress built, her body started to hurt randomly, and within months, at least one part of her body was in pain all of the time. In 2017, Wheeler visited A.I. duPont Medical Center and was diagnosed with amplified muscu-

Beards for Brothers will benefit from a fundraiser during the month of November. Local police departments and first responders in Lancaster County will join to raise funds. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt, who heads up the East Hempfield Police Department K-9 program. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the campaign will raise money for Officer Wendell Metzler of the New Holland Borough Police Department, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, a longtime volunteer and an emergency medical technician. In June, it was discovered he had stage IV melanoma. Metzler has undergone numerous radiation treatments and is currently receiving aggressive immunotherapy treatments to battle the disease. Metzler has been unable to serve his community, and the cost of treatment is significant. Throughout November,

4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season
tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games.
Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. For more information on PennDOT, winter preparations, and additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.penndot.gov.

With the winter season approaching, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/ winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined. With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about

LancasterHistory.org’s Yuletide at Wheatland will run through Saturday, Dec. 29. Attendees will tour the presidential mansion, located at 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, and learn about the multi-layered history of the house and its occupants, as well as how Christmas celebrations changed over the course of 60 years in America. Tours will be available Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During Yuletide at Wheatland, visitors will learn about three distinct eras in the mansion’s history through three festively decorated period rooms: the 1860s, 1880s, and 1920s. These period rooms will take visitors from the year 1860, when President Buchanan celebrated a modest Presbyterian Christmas at Wheatland, into the late Victorian era, when Buchanan’s niece Harriet Lane Johnston owned the house and would have celebrated a classic Dickens-style Christmas with her family, to 1920, when Wheatland was occupied by George B. Willson and his family and served as a space to celebrate a festive ’20s Christmas reflective of the early 20th-century consumer culture in America.

One A-Chord Sets Concerts The One A-Chord Community Choir will present “All Is Well,” a concert of worship and Christmas celebration. Concerts will take place on Sundays at 6 p.m. on Nov. 25 at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road; Dec. 2 at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road; and Dec. 16 at Lancaster County Christian School, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The mission of One A-Chord is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ through music. The choir’s 125 singers, ranging in age from 20s to 90, represent numerous churches and denominations throughout the area. The choir was first organized in 2000, and then in 2005 it became a regular part of Lancaster County’s National Day of Prayer, annually on the first Thursday of May. The choir expanded its ministry in 2011 to include worship events and concerts at churches, retirement and senior centers, and community events. As the ministry grew, One A-Chord Ministries was established as a nonprofit community choir. Concerts are open to the public, and admission is free. Freewill offerings will be received. For more information, readers may visit www.one achordministries.org or call 717575-8178.

The North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will debut its latest show, “Cosmic Journeys - Destination Mars” on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 1:30 p.m. The original 35- to 40-minute show is the creation of Penn Manor High School sophomore Tommy Hockenberry, who volunteers in the museum’s planetarium on a regular basis. Tommy proposed his concept for the show last January and is debuting the show to coincide with the Mars landing of NASA spacecraft InSight, set for Monday, Nov. 26. Tommy will be on hand to narrate and present the show himself on Nov. 21. The show will continue at the museum on weekends through the holiday season and until Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, with Tommy narrating as his schedule allows. Tommy originally came to the museum for a summer camp in 2013. While there, he met senior astronomy educator Mike “Cosmic Mike” Smith, who led the campers through a program titled “Cosmic Mike’s Mission to the Red Planet,” which focused on NASA’s Curiosity Rover. It was this encounter that sparked Tommy’s interest in Mars and has led to him creating a planetarium show. He plans to pursue a career in aerospace engineering.
