will be distributed to those in need throughout the community during the holiday season. Various door prizes will be given out during the craft fair, and the prizes will include items donated by the participating vendors. Wesley Church’s inaugural craft fair was hosted in 2011. A member of the events committee suggested the church organize its own craft bazaar, as no similar events were

The Solanco Fair is one of Quarryville’s most beloved traditions. Every autumn, local residents gather at the fairgrounds to enjoy the company of neighbors and the area’s unique character. One of the highlights of the annual fair is the crowning of a new fair queen; in September, Solanco High School senior Keeley Kreider was selected as the 2023 Solanco Fair queen, and she hasn’t wasted any time using her new title to support the community. In addition to serving as fair queen, Kreider is a member of the Solanco High School FFA. Every year, members of the club individually sell fresh fruit to raise money for various endeavors such as conventions and other group activities. Kreider and her fellow Solanco FFA members decided to shake things up this year by partnering with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM). Through the collaboration between the fair queen, SNM and the Solanco FFA, patrons were able to purchase fruit for SNM’s food bank in Quarryville. From the end of October until Nov. 15, the Solanco FFA accepted online orders for boxes of fruit, which Kreider will personally deliver to the food bank on Monday, Dec. 11. “This partnership benefits all parties; we get more boxes of

esley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, will host its annual craft fair on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature more than 50 vendors and refreshments available to purchase from the church. food bank and winter attire for the Wesley Church’s mitten tree. A variety of items will be available to purchase from the vendors, including artwork, kitchenware, wooden crafts, knitted accessories, jewelry, items for pets, plants baked goods and products made from upcycled materials. Every year, vendors travel from across Lancaster County and nearby states to sell merchandise at the

fair, and the proceeds from the vendors’ participation fee will benefit Wesley Church’s discretionary fund. Members of the congregation will sell doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs and soup during the craft fair. Church members will also accept donations of winter clothing such as mittens, gloves, hats and scarves for the mitten tree, and the items

fruit in and we’re able to give them right back to people in Quarryville,” Kreider said. “It’s an awesome way for me to use my platform to help my community.” During the fundraiser, customers had a variety of fruits to choose from, including oranges, grapefruits, clementines, pears and apples, as well as sampler boxes that contain multiple types of fruits and vegetables. Although the purchased fruit will be delivered to SNM’s food bank this year, the profits will support the Solanco FFA. Since Kreider donned her crown in September, she has been performing her duties as fair queen in more ways than her role in the fruit sale. On Oct. 15, Kreider attended the Quarryville Fire Department’s annual Trunk or Treat to

hand out candy to costumed youngsters. On Saturday, Dec. 9, Kreider will return to the Solanco Fairgrounds for Christmas in Qville. As Kreider works to make an impact in Quarryville, she is gearing up for the state fair queen contest in January, where she will represent the local community and its values. “I’m looking forward to representing our small community on a larger scale and meeting other girls who are voicing the same passions that I have,” Kreider said. Kreider has participated in the Solanco Fair for as long as she can remember, first attending the event with her parents as an infant. During the fair queen competition, Kreider was tasked to write a speech, compose an essay, complete an interview and answer questions from a

panel of judges. Each portion of the process allowed Kreider to express her deep connection with the agriculture industry; Kreider currently lives on a dairy farm, and she hopes in pursue a career in agriculture business after graduating from high school. “I love being able to connect with the community and influence other girls to get involved,” said Kreider.

Craft fair from pg 1 being held in the area at the time. The initial fair featured approximately 20 vendors, but it grew substantially when Wesley Church moved to its new building in 2012. The larger space allowed more vendors to participate, and the fair’s popularity has continued to grow every year since. “People really enjoy the variety

of items that are available,” said Bonnie Aukamp, one of the craft fair’s organizers. “It is always exciting to see what creative items people make.” For each craft fair, Wesley Church highlights a specific ministry that will participate as a vendor. This year, the church is placing the spotlight on the Oaks Ministry in Oxford. The

organization offers transitional housing and support services for women who are seeking financial stability. Rooted in Christian values, the Oaks Ministry facilitates housing programs that range from nine to 18 months long. During each program, participants receive guidance on creating routines, encouraging

positive relationships, developing basic life skills and promoting creative outlets. “We always like to highlight a ministry that has a special vision and works to benefit the community,” said Aukamp. For more information about the Oaks Ministry, visit https://oxfordoaksministry .com.

LCSWMA urges proper disposal of batteries The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has launched a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel are found in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches,

vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If a rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process. Fires in

garbage trucks and waste processing facilities are on the rise and pose a safety risk to waste disposal personnel. Members of the public should not keep end-of-life rechargeable batteries or put them in the trash or recycling. Free drop-off of endof-life batteries, both alkaline and rechargeable, is available at LCSWMA’s

drive-through Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. To find other collection points, visit www.safebatterydisposal.com. This webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.

WFCS welcomes guest pastors October was observed as Pastor Appreciation Month and recently, more than 32 pastors and youth and children’s ministry leaders from local churches enjoyed a morning at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS), a private Christian school in Atglen. After enjoying a light breakfast, the guests attended

the school’s chapel program, which included songs, scripture readings and a message. There were also special performances from the student body, including the worship team, instrumental ensemble; and presentations by the kindergarten, third-grade and middle school boys’ and girls’ Bible classes. The visitors were then invited to share
