Resurrecting A Church Event BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For the third time in its history, the congregation at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC) will host a Christmas at the Level event to raise money for recent church renovations. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church’s Family Life Center building, which is located across the street from CLPC, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. The renovations took about a year and a half to complete, said church member Linda Myers. Two fieldstones were added on either side of the bell tower, and the ceiling, stained-glass windows, and wooden pews were restored. See Fundraiser pg 5 Officer Kelly Osborne with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster is looking forward to the second annual Shop With a Cop event.
Trooper Kurt Goldbach (left) participated in last year’s Shop With a Cop and plans to attend this year’s event as well.
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
ive years ago, the Middletown Police Department in Langhorne, Pennsylvania started the Shop With a Cop (SWAC) program with the mission of brightening the holiday season for children and families in need. Since its inception, the program has been implemented by other agencies in Pennsylvania. Among them is Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster, which is located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Troop J - Lancaster covers
F
19 townships and two boroughs in the county. Officers are also stationed full time at Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts. Troop J - Lancaster’s second annual SWAC event will take place at Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 4. Children should arrive at the fire station by 9:30 a.m. They will then be paired with a law enforcement officer and receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s. Children and officers will be bused to the Kohl’s Lincoln Highway East location, where they will shop for
Christmas presents for children’s family members. Then, everyone will return to the fire station to eat a bagged lunch and wrap the presents. Officer Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster, mentioned that a retired trooper will dress as Santa Claus and the fire company will be decorated with a Christmas tree. Parents should plan to pickup their children around noon. Osborne said she was excited to announce the return of SWAC. She noted that the program strives to positively impact children ages 6 to
18 in Lancaster County who have had police contact or been victims of unfortunate circumstances. The purpose of the program is not based solely on financial need, but also on the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. “I’m really looking forward to enjoying it and interacting with the kids this year and go all out,” said Osborne. “My volunteers loved it last year. Before I reached out to them this year, they asked, ‘When are you doing Shop With a Cop again?’” See Shop With A Cop pg 7

the OAA. Another tradition of this annual event is the selection of the People’s Choice winners through the casting of votes by the OAA members present. This year’s first-place winner was Ruth Lefever of Kirkwood for her watercolor of a back road through farm country, and second place went to Marsha Stiles of Quarryville for her watercolor, titled “Old Rugged Mill.” Lefever and Stiles received cash prizes. During the afternoon, members of the OAA spoke about their work during the past year. Their activities included hosting summer art and clay camps for children, holding art workshops by prominent local teacherartists for interested members and providing a college scholarship to a young artist.

tions of this lease are that the OAA must annually present original works of art by its members for judging and selection of one by the CWA. This year, attendees included 16 OAA members, nine of whom exhibited a total of 20 original works of art. OAA president Jay Eaton of Oxford served as master of ceremonies. During the event, CWA executive manager Robert A. Judge Sr. reviewed the art exhibited and made his selection to add to the CWA art collection. Typically, the winning work hangs in one of the offices in CWA’s Chester facility or in its plant in Nottingham. This year’s Picture of the Year was created by John Esworthy of Christiana. Almost from the start of the renovations, it was decided that the church would keep items from the renovations for the sake of repurposing. So, the organ was dismantled, floorboards were cut, hymnals were broken down, and slate from the old roof was gathered. Everything that could be recycled was salvaged and stored for safe keeping until church members came up with ideas of how to repurpose the items. Christmas at the Level is a holiday fundraiser featuring handcrafted gifts, décor, and keepsakes, many of which were made from materials salvaged during the sanctuary renovations. Attendees will see tree ornaments made from hymnal pages, red velvet stockings sewn from the red drape that once hung behind the pulpit, slate coasters and tier trays from the old roof, glass jewelry crafted from chandeliers, and coat racks assembled from foot pedals of the organ, as well as aprons, table runners, and potholders made from recycled fabric. “ We’re very grateful, blessed, and thankful,” said church member Cindy Derr. “Hopefully people will come out and have a fun day.” CLPC’s fourth-edition church cookbook will be sold at the event, and there will be a silent

Al Strausner (left) and his grandson, Matthew Palmeri, have bonded over Plasticville products for the past five years.
Matthew will manage the details, including the trees, telephone poles, people, cars, flagpoles, and mailboxes. Matthew noted that there will be choir risers set up along the outside edges of the train display for children to get a better view of the layout. The holiday train display will be open at the church from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 11 and 18, and Sundays, Dec. 12, 19, and 26. There is no cost to attend, but visitors can bring in non-
perishable food items, which will be donated to the Conestoga Community Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. “I just get excited talking to people about Plasticville,” said Strausner. For more information about the train display, contact Strausner at william.strausner @yahoo.com or 717-917-6922. To learn more about Plasticville, Strausner recommends visiting www.tandem -associates.com.

2021 marks the third year that Willow Street resident Al Strausner and his grandson, Matthew Palmeri, will build a temporary model railroad layout at West Willow United Methodist Church (UMC), 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. In December 2018, more than 180 people visited. The year after, the pair saw about 300 visitors. The upcoming display will differ from years prior, but Strausner plans to incorporate several Plasticville buildings like he did before. Now 77, Strausner has been collecting Plasticville items since he was 7. “Instead of candy and gifts for special occasions, my aunt and uncle would give me a Plasticville,” he explained. Today, his entire basement is stocked with Plasticville, and about five years ago, his grandson became interested in collect-
ing, too. “He has two sheets of plywood as platforms, and every inch is covered with Plasticville,” Strausner said. An eighth-grader at Marticville Middle School, Matthew said he hopes to have a collection as large as his grandfather’s at some point. “Pappy takes me to train shows, and there’s a flea market up in Adamstown, and it’s a pretty big thing,” he stated. “There’s a guy up there and he’s very nice. I bought Plasticville from him last year and he has it for pretty cheap, so I get a lot from him.” Matthew’s mother, Amy Palmeri, sometimes helps Matthew with his projects. “I tell her to get me this and grab that,” commented Matthew. “I think she’s picked up on what I mean.” Amy, Strausner’s daughter, also keeps track of how many people visit the train display at the church. For this year’s train display, Strausner will coordinate the placement of houses, stores, churches, motels, municipal buildings, diners, and apartment buildings, whereas

Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) and the Lancaster Family YMCA renewed their partnership to provide increased fitness and training opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Effective Sept. 1, the partnership continued to connect athletes with two Y facilities in the Lancaster County region. Both organizations share a similar mission of working to improve the quality of life and well-being for the community. This partnership helps alleviate Special Olympics’ struggle to find suitable locations to train athletes and host local competitions. Athletes in the Special Olympic programs have access to the Y facilities where they can train for competitive meets, improve fitness levels, and build conditioning skills needed to meet the physical challenges of sports training. Athletes can also train for Olympic-type sports yearround as opposed to in eightweek sessions. Developing healthy habits is another big challenge facing the athletes and their families. To help address this challenge, the Lancaster Family YMCA offers a discount for athletes and their families. With the support from the Y, athletes have regular access to health and wellness programs, group exercise, and nutritionists as well as open gym and swim time. The partnership with the Lancaster Family YMCA not only helps athletes continuously improve their conditioning and skills, but also helps to educate athletes and families about the importance of nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle. The Lancaster Family YMCA joins more than 30 other YMCA facilities in Pennsylvania that have partnered with SOPA to increase opportunities for athletes to develop lifelong fitness goals and reach their full potential. For more information about the partnership and to find local opportunities to get involved with SOPA and the local YMCAs, visit www.specialolympicspa.org.
