we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive SLCHS Releases 2021 Art-Rich Calendar BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
After the tumultuous year that 2020 has been, one common hope is that 2021 will be better. But even if the new year isn’t fabulous, at least you can mark off the days in style with a calendar from the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society (SLCHS). Beginning in 1987, the historical society has commissioned artists to create representations of photographs of local historic sites and scenery that have then been compiled into a yearly calendar along with tidbits of information about each image. The calendars are then sold as a fundraiser for the organization, which maintains an See Calendar pg 5

hristmas might look different this year, with fewer inperson group festivities, but the Conklin family is committed to making the holiday special for youngsters, just as they have done for 17 years. Twins Haley Conklin Hirthler and Emily Conklin Lasko inspired what became the Solanco Toy Drive when

they were in elementary school. The girls traditionally held a party at a local skating rink to celebrate their Nov. 9 birthday with all of their classmates. One year, rather than welcoming presents, the girls asked their peers to bring new, unwrapped toys to give as Christmas gifts to other children. The donations were distributed with the help of the Community Action Program in Quarryville, and the Solanco Toy
Drive grew from there. Years ago, friends of the Conklin family joined in with their holiday spirit and began hosting an annual dance to raise money to purchase gifts for the drive. Due to COVID-19, this year’s dance has been canceled. The Solanco Toy Drive, however, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at Nickel Mine Floor Covering, 359 Buck Road, Quarryville. Vouchers
for the event may be requested by applying at www.solancotoy drive.com. Jodi Conklin, the twins’ mother and toy drive coordinator, noted that the online application is new this year in order to reduce the number of calls to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, 355 Buck Road, Quarryville. Solanco Neighborhood Ministries previously handled the voucher application process, but as

Which reminds us: The SLCHS has canceled all events this year, including its annual Christmas dinner and the greens sale. “Like so many other activities both at the society and within the community, (the sale) has been canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. Many members and community volunteers who help during this event are in the high-risk (category) for infection,” greens sale chair Peg Wurst explained. “We appreciate the support from the community we have received in the past. We hope we can count on that support as we move forward to 2021.” For more information about the SLCHS and the 2021 calendar, readers may call 717548-2679.

extensive archive and the Robert Fulton Birthplace. Susquehanna River territory features prominently in the 2021 calendar. SLCHS president Stan White explained that when he and co-author Mike Roth visited the Conestoga Area Historical Society on a mission for a new book, they were shown crates of photographs donated by the Holtwood Hydroelectric Power Plant, which no longer wanted to care for the collection from the Pennsylvania Water & Power Company. At Roth and White’s request, the SLCHS permitted the photographs to be scanned into its database. “While I had some help, I think I have personally scanned and labeled 16,500 pictures, some of which are absolutely wonderful, but many of which will only be of interest to an engineer,” White commented. “I now know an awful lot about the Holtwood Dam and power plants of an earlier time.” From those thousands of photographs, White selected a few to join the possibilities that artists would tackle. “I was a little surprised our calendar committee liked the Holtwood pictures as much as I did. I think they were surprised to see a steamboat and a tugboat once used to harvest river coal,” White said. The art on the cover of the 2021 calendar is Marsha Stiles’ sketch of Shudy’s Diner. “This building can still be found along Route 272 about a half-mile south of the Buck, on the west side,” White remarked. “I wonder if the people who live in that small set of apartments know it was built as a diner.” A limited number of calendars have been printed and may be purchased at Agway, 27 E.

Solanco CROP Walk Results Posted The 40th anniversary Solanco CROP Walk took place at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood on Oct. 17. Before the walk, participants took photos with posters bearing vegetable-themed sayings such as “I am helping to ‘beet’ hunger and ‘squash’ poverty around the block and around the world!” Participants walked 5 miles through Muddy Run. Prewrapped snack items were available before and after the walk. There were 79 participants representing 17 community churches and organizations. This was one of the largest groups of participants in many years. Funds raised for this event were slightly over $13,600, one of the highest amounts raised in recent years. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised will go to Church World Service, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries will receive 25%.

The year-end holiday season is typically considered a celebration of joy and gratitude, but for those who have lost loved ones, the season brings pain and mourning. In a recent newsletter, the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss recommended a few strategies for coping with the holidays. • Plan ahead and prioritize. Evaluate what you need to personally take care of and what you can delegate. Ask if the holiday can be observed without a particular element if that would be easier for you. • Live in the moment. Take each day one at a time and don’t look too far ahead. Find ways to get through each day. • Create rituals. Find ways to remember those who live on in your heart and mind. Additionally, three local churches have planned events to give individuals time away from the hustle and bustle to commemorate the holidays while holding space for their grief. Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, will host “Surviving the Holidaysâ€? on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. The seminar will teach coping mechanisms to navigate the troubled waters of loss. Attendees will learn how to deal with many emotions that they may face during the holidays and what to do about traditions and other coming changes. Tips for surviving social events and how to discover hope for the future will also be provided. Registration is required to attend “Surviving the Holidays.â€? Volunteers Sought For Bible Adventure Program BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Do you enjoy spending time with elementary school students? Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you have two daytime hours a week available to help youngsters learn about Jesus? If you answered “yes” to these three questions, then Tammy Brown wants to talk with you. Brown is the equipping coordinator for southern Lancaster and York counties for Joy El Ministries’ Bible Adventure program, and she is recruiting volunteers to help with existing
offerings and to open new ones. Bible Adventure programs are offered for students in third to fifth grades, with the occasional addition of sixth grade, depending on the school. For one hour a week during the school year, participants are excused from their classes to attend Bible Adventure. Typically, the programs are held at a nearby church, but some schools allow students to meet in a room on campus. Volunteers gather at the venues a half-hour before students arrive, then take another half-hour afterward to debrief.

During the Bible Adventure hour, volunteers lead group singing, teach a Bible lesson, and meet with students in small groups to work on memorizing Bible verses. Scripture memorization is a significant part of Bible Adventure, with a special points-and-rewards program to incentivize participation. Brown noted that the curriculum is created by Joy El staff members and covers the contents of the Bible from beginning to end. “We start with explaining what the Bible is because some children don’t know what the Bible is or why we believe what it says,” Brown said. “We cover creation, the fall, rescue through Jesus’ death on the cross, and restoration through relationship with Him.” This school year has been somewhat different because of
the pandemic; each local Bible Adventure meeting follows its respective school’s protocol. Carefulness extends to transportation, with seating charts for buses. To volunteer, an individual must be at least age 16, but there is no upper age limit. Brown noted that several octoand nonagenarians are actively involved with Bible Adventure. All volunteers must past background checks. They do not need to be members of the hosting churches, but they must have a desire to introduce children to Jesus, Brown said. Additionally, bus drivers are needed. Interested individuals must have a CDL with a P endorsement. Brown has been involved with Bible Adventure for several years after previously work-

I don’t think I would have made it through without Jesus and the hope of Him,” Brown explained. “I want these kids to learn about Jesus when I did, as early as possible, so they can rely on Him in good

are treated at the atlas and C1 vertebra using an instrument Steven invented to tap under the skull and level the head without twisting the neck. Clients have traveled from Greece, Ukraine, and England to receive treatment at Goodman Chiropractic. The practice is built on the precept of the Golden Rule. “We treat people like we want to be treated, with the highest standards of care and dignity, regardless of color, race, or economic situation,” Steven said, noting that the practice values efficiency and integrity and never providing more treatment than necessary. Eleven years ago, Steven’s middle son, John, took over the business and Steven and his wife, Elaine, opened a practice in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The couple recently moved back to Lancaster County to spend time with their grandchildren and youngest son, Michael. John will be traveling, so Steven will resume leadership of Goodman Chiropractic. The office is open by appointment. Individuals may call 717-466-5888 to schedule. For more information, they may visit www.the goodmanmethod.com.
