Putting Life Into The Nativity BY COURTNEY MENGEL
saiah 9:6 reads, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” What was it like for Mary and Joseph to travel all the way to Bethlehem, only to find that there was no room at the inn? And for Mary to give birth to Jesus in a manger? Around Christmastime, people will often see a nativity scene consisting of art objects depicting the birth of Jesus. Because these displays are static and do not move, people don’t really get a sense of the emotion surrounding Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Diane Herr, a member of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, decided to add a little bit of life into the Nativity scene. Over the summer last year, Diane began brainstorming the idea of hosting an outdoor event for people to gather. She decided Christmas would be a good time because she

assumed COVID-19 restrictions would lower by then. So, Diane sat down and wrote a script for a fourscene production of a Live Journey to the Nativity. “I’m not taking credit for this because, honestly, I feel like this was all spirit-led,” Diane said. “If someone told me to sit down today and do that again, I don’t think I could do it.” After getting approval from her pastor, Diane quickly gathered a crew to help with the production. About 240 people attended last year’s Live Journey to the Nativity at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. “Everyone seemed like they really enjoyed it,” stated Diane. This year, more than 50 church members have been working together to host the second annual Live Journey to the Nativity. Aside from Diane, the core committee group consists of Laurie O’Donnell, Amy Housekeeper, Heather Kreider, Lori Holzhauer, Melissa Houghton, and Hans Herr. “These individuals are such an asset at making this (production) happen,” noted Diane.

The Live Journey to the Nativity will consist of four scenes and will feature live animals.

In his recent publication titled “What Do You Say?” Dr. Garfield Greene invites readers to join him as he examines the true identity of Jesus as seen in the Bible and in the world. “What Do You Say?” deals with the question, “What is the true identity of Jesus Christ?” The book looks into the person and the work of Jesus of Nazareth, who is also called Jesus Christ or Jesus of Galilee. Readers get to know the central figure of Christianity and what kind of kingdom Jesus came to establish. The book also includes a detailed account of how the author began a long and secure relationship with Jesus and suggests a way that the reader might
do the same. Greene has served as pastor of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Peach Bottom for the past 10 years. Greene was honorably discharged in 1961 after serving as an airman in the United States Air Force. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in French from Morgan State College, a Master in Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He has been employed as a chaplain at the Trenton State Prison and a clinical social worker for the Department of the Army and for the Veterans Affairs.
Holiday Dinner Giveaway Slated The 35th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 18. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pick-up location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. To receive a holiday dinner, families must preregister by calling the United
Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 from Monday, Nov. 29, through Friday, Dec. 10. Families may also register at http://pa211east.org/ Lancaster/. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants the morning of Dec. 18. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. To learn more, visit www.lcpn.org.

Solanco Receives New Scoreboards
Solanco recently installed new scoreboards.
Solanco’s old scoreboards, which were more than 25 years old, were recently upgraded with the support of community business sponsors. “The old boards were obsolete, and we were unable to purchase replacement parts anymore,” said athletic director Anthony Hall. “The new boards, costing $25,000, are digital and
are the second phase of replacing all of our scoreboards. They will be used for basketball, wrestling, and volleyball. The football field board was already replaced, again with the support of community businesses.” For information about sponsoring a scoreboard, contact Hall at anthony_hall@ solancosd.org.

The Lancaster-Lebanon League girls’ soccer banquet was held on Nov. 21, and five Solanco players were recognized. Seniors Rilyn Saner and Maya Dolan received Section Three First Team honors, while Alanna Brown and Hannah Wood were Second Team selections and Caroline Drumm was an Academic All-Star. Saner led the team with eight assists and was a team captain, along with Dolan, who finished the season with five goals and one assist. Brown, who scored twice and dished out one assist, filled in anywhere she was needed on the field. Wood, a fouryear starter at center back, was also a team captain. “Hannah was a leader on a defense that only allowed 16 goals in 18 regular-season games,” pointed out coach Matt Jansen. Drumm, the goalkeeper this year, compiled seven shutouts.
“Caroline came up with big saves down the stretch as we secured a spot in district playoffs,” Jansen said. At their end-of-the-year banquet, award winners were also recognized. Dolan was named MVP. Josie Janssen, a sophomore, was the Offensive Player of the Year, while Wood was the Defensive Player of the Year. Brown, Saner, and senior and captain Kendall Janssen also received Coaches’ Choice Awards. Junior varsity award winners included Mia Daniel-Morales as MVP. Aubrey Bickford was Offensive Player of the Year, Courtney Sellers was Defensive Player of the Year, and Emma Housekeeper and Madi Kut received the Coaches’ Choice Award.

smaller, scaled-down version of the bazaar,” said bazaars coordinator Bonnie Aukamp. “It will be great to have folks back.” This year, Patrick Buckner, worship leader at Colerain Church, will participate in the bazaar at the Colerain bazaar as a vendor with Unashamed Ministries. Patrick’s ministry began with his release of original evangelistic songs that included messages of hope and encouragement to be a bold, unashamed witness to the good news of Jesus Christ. When Patrick met his wife, Leanne Buckner, last year, Leanne relayed the idea to Patrick about combining
the evangelistic music with community outreach. Since February of this year, they have made Valentine’s Day cards for Quarryville Presbyterian Nursing Home residents, participated in “A Child’s Life” toy drive for Lancaster General Hospital, collected and donated supplies for Water Street Mission, and given “ bags of comfort” to cancer patients at Ephrata Hospital. Unashamed Ministries’ current outreach project, “Bless A Neighbor,” encourages people to purchase five different gift bags for others; and a percentage of the proceeds from this project will benefit Meals on W heels. “Bless A Neighbor” gift bags will be available for purchase
at the Colerain bazaar. “The exact reason as to why we continue to do Unashamed Ministries is that we have a calling to be a light in a very darkened world and to meet needs all in the name of Jesus,” stated Patrick. “Leanne and I are thrilled to find ways to be a support and some help to other organizations that notice a need and then does something.” To learn more about Unashamed Ministries, visit www.unashamed ministriespa.com. Breakfast and lunch will be available at both churches. Door prizes donated by the vendors will be given away throughout the day at the Wesley location, and various gift baskets will be awarded at the Colerain location.

Donations of nonperishable food will be given to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, and warm accessories such as mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves for children and adults will be collected and given to the Mitten Tree through the Quarryville Library. “People should attend the bazaar because this is all about making memories and this is about showing support and living out what it means to be an encourager, and an uplifter in what may be the bleakest of times in someone’s life,” commented Patrick. For more information about the event, contact Wesley Church at 717-786-8322 or info@wesleyqville.org.
Calendar Sales from pg 1 historical sites, buildings, and people by local artists. Stan White, president of the SLCHS, said he was excited to announce the release of the 2022 calendar. People can purchase calendars at four locations in Quarryville: Maplehofe Dairy, 799 Robert Fulton Highway; Kreider’s Market, 2396 Kirkwood Pike; Quarryville Agway, 27 E. Fourth St.; and the SLCHS’ archive building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway. The archives are open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon as well as the second and fourth Saturdays during fall and winter from 9 a.m. to noon. Every year, White distributes photographs from the society’s collection to 12 local artists, who then use the photographs as reference for their drawings. All of the images that the artists used as reference this year are from the society’s new collection of photographs and documents from the Carter and Henry families. This collection was donated to the society this past April by Vicki Kay Carter. After the artists submit their finished work, the calendar committee assigns a drawing for each month and then decides which piece to feature on the front cover. The committee tries to feature the work of an artist who has not been on the cover recently. This year’s cover artist is Amy Mueller. Contributing drawings for the past seven years, Amy chose to draw Ellsworth Carter’s steam-powered well-drilling supply train. Her work also shows the crew that worked for Mr. Carter. The remaining artists who contributed to the

2022 calendar are Jane McCardell, Ruth Lefever, Christiean Sensenig, Marsha Stiles, Linda White, John Esworthy, Jesse Crotti, Mark Phillips, Martie Brown, Novelda Ferguson, and Colleen Shoemaker. “I like seeing what people come up with, with their artistic interpretations of the photographs I give them every year,” stated White. White also noted that the society is always searching for new and old photographs of historic houses, barns, vehicles, and businesses. “Our society is a great place to keep copies of a few of your family’s pictures … a place where they may be found generations from today by your descendants,” he said. Most collections can be returned within a week after careful scanning by White, who is also the society’s digital archivist. To learn more about the SLCHS, visit www.southern lancasterhistory.org.
