Santa Claus traditionally brings toys for good girls and boys, but sometimes he needs a little help. The members of the Friends of the Quarryville Library have prepared for that eventuality and will host a holiday gift and bake sale on Friday, Dec. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. “In the past, we were all about the baked goods, and that’s still our focus, but we have tables and tables of gift ideas ranging from 25 cents to higher-end items,” said Deb Waite, who is co-chairing the event with Anne Fisher. The Friends group has collected 1950s toys, some in their original packaging, along with a vintage Avon Nativity set, The Beach Boys 25th anniversary record album, and never-unwrapped copies of a biography of Princess Diana
•Performance of Handel’s “Messiah,” Memorial United Methodist Church, Quarryville Dec. 15 York County •Christmas Magic - A Festival of Lights, Rocky Ridge County Park, York - through Dec. 31 •The Midstate Ballet of Greater York Dance’s “The Nutcracker,” Appell Center, York Dec. 15 •Winter walks at Gifford Pinchot State Park, Lewisberry select dates starting Dec. 20
and “The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker.” The table of vintage and upscale items was created through a deliberate effort. “ We’re upgrading,” Fisher remarked. The items have been donated by the members, who keep a lookout for interesting items all year long. “In the summer, it’s cheap,” Friends member Carol Biscardi said of Christmas-themed merchandise. Additionally, the Friends have pulled Christmas books for children and adults, as well as cookbooks, that will be located in a special section of the sale offerings. While part of the library’s C. X. Carlson Cultural Room will be dedicated to the holiday gift sale, 12 tables will feature baked goods. The Friends are seeking donations of homemade cookies, candy, and brownies. Cupcakes do not sell well, the organizers noted. See Library Friends pg 7
The Friends of the Quarryville Library, represented by (from left) Anne Fisher, Donna Trimble, Deb Waite, and Peg Allar, will host a holiday gift and bake sale, as well as a monthly book sale, on Dec. 13 and 14. Donations of homemade baked goods will be appreciated.
Zion UCC Plans Breakfast With Santa Volunteers Sought For Annual Bird Count By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Christine Smolenski was 18 in 1969 when her father, Melvin Stinson, accepted the role of pastor at Zion United Church of Christ (UCC) of New Providence, 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg. She has fond memories of that time, and although she was not a child who sat on Santa’s knee, she recalls the jolly old elf’s visit to Christmas parties hosted by the church. “Harry Herr was Santa,” Christine recalled. “Children got an orange, a little box of candy from a local candy company, and a candy cane.” Christine moved away to attend college, and after teaching in the Solanco School District in the 1980s, she and her husband, Edward, and their two boys moved to western Pennsylvania See Zion UCC Breakfast pg 4
Zion UCC of New Providence members Christine Smolenski (left) and Ken Ray interacted with a guest at a previous Breakfast With Santa. This year’s event will take place on Dec. 14.
The National Audubon Society invites birdwatchers to participate in its long-running community science survey, the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). On Sunday, Dec. 15, birders and nature enthusiasts in southern Lancaster County will take part in this tradition, many rising before dawn to participate. The 44th annual Southern Lancaster County CBC will be a fun day of birding in lots of great habitats, said coordinator Bob Schutsky. “We would appreciate your help, whether for a few hours or the entire day,” Schutsky said, noting that people of any age and level of birding expertise will be welcome. “If you are fairly new at birding, we will team you up with an experienced group leader. If you live within the count circle and wish to do some feeder-watching on the day of the count, that would be a tremendous help.” See Christmas Bird Count pg 6
This great blue heron was feeding at a boat launch on the lower Susquehanna River when Bob Schutsky snapped its picture. Schutsky is coordinating the Southern Lancaster County Christmas Bird Count, part of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, on Dec. 15.

The Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will host open houses at the Christiana freight station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana, on Sundays, Dec. 15 and 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to enjoy a leisurely tour of the 1882 freight station decorated for the holidays. Admission is free and open to the public. There will be a variety of railroad artifacts on display, as well as numerous photograph boards displaying pictures of local Conestoga Traction trolleys of a bygone era, restoration of the 1882 freight station by the Lancaster Chapter of the NRHS, local early construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad, railroad bridges and more. An outdoor deck will allow attendees to safely enjoy watching as Amtrak trains race pass the 137-year-old freight station at nearly 90 mph. Visible eastward across the tracks is a 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad
passenger station. Passenger service from this station was discontinued in 1952. Newly installed stairs will allow visitors to climb aboard an N7E caboose restored to its Conrail-era paint and logo scheme. The caboose sits along the mainline on the east side of the freight station. The caboose has an enlarged logo that was normally installed on the Conrail engines. Only two cabooses of 20 in the N7E class are believed to have been outfitted with a large, rather than small, logo. A chapter volunteer will give additional informative facts about the caboose and the Amtrak mainline that runs through Christiana. Glenn Kendig will operate his model O-gauge trains on the second floor of the freight station. The NRHS chapter will have a sales table offering items for sale, including railroad themed books, prints, afghan blankets, a wood caboose, freight station cutouts and other items.

so she could work on her doctorate. Edward ran a pizza shop while Christine studied, but she eventually joined Edward in the business. The Smolenskis later moved to Elizabethtown, where they lived until four years ago, when they bought the cottage across the road from Zion UCC. “The house that we bought belonged to a family we knew for a long time even before my dad came down here,” Christine shared. Since moving back to Winter Hill Road, the Smolenskis have joined Zion UCC and have become active members. Christine is a deaconess and chair of the Mission and Growth Committee, which sponsors monthly community meals and other outreach activities. “We’ve worked very hard to keep events going,” Christine said of the committee. “Edward and I do the community meals.” Edward is also the main kitchen elf for
the Breakfast With Santa event the church began hosting four years ago. Church member George Ray assists in the kitchen as well. George’s brother, Ken Ray, typically dresses up as Santa Claus in a suit Christine purchased for him. It is not quite like the suit worn by the Santa of Christine’s memories. “We still have (Herr’s) suit,” Christine marveled, noting that she found it at the church when cleaning out some closets. “It was heavy and beautifully made. It even had boots with it. I bet it was expensive then.” A neighbor is slated to don Ken’s Santa suit for the Breakfast With Santa on Saturday, Dec. 14, as Ken will be unavailable that day. Edward and George will fire up the ovens and prepare a meal of pancakes, sausage, bacon, and fresh fruit. Waffles will be available upon request. Coffee, hot tea, and juices will be served as well. New this year, there will be a “Create a Christmas Pancake” station, where diners
may decorate their pancakes or waffles with chocolate chips, colored sprinkles, syrup, whipped cream, and more. “Whatever they want to do, they can make a special pancake. Maybe they’ll take a piece of bacon and make a smile,” Christine said. Children will also have the opportunity to make a Christmas-related craft, and church member Geri Roland will serve as helper elf. Pastor Robert Bistline and other church members are also slated to serve at the event. “We are happy to provide something safe and fun for the local kids who want to come,” Christine commented. Attendance at the Breakfast With Santa will be open to people of all ages at no cost, but donations will be accepted. Diners may drop in between 8 and 10 a.m. Reservations are required by Thursday, Dec. 12, and readers may call the church at 717-786-2091 to reserve spaces. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Thursdays. Callers outside those times may leave messages on the answering machine.

and Much More!
The women’s auxiliary of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, has been offering holiday shopping opportunities since 1995. The group’s 25th annual Christmas craft show and sale will feature more than 70 vendors and will take place at the church on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Event coordinator Jean Marconi stated that inclusion in the show is restricted to noncommercial vendors, and she tries not to duplicate crafts. For example, while there will be several jewelry vendors, the components, shapes, and designs of their creations are different. Along with jewelry, the types of items offered at the show will include stained glass, wooden ornaments, baskets from Africa, handwoven towels, handmade soaps, alpaca items, Christmas décor, puzzle balls, rustic crafts, Old World Santas, potpourri and other floral products, doll beds and clothing, dog scarves, etched glass, pottery, quilted linens, feather trees, painted slates and glassware, hair accessories, nut butters, clay flowers, and more. The only exception to the handmade rule is made for the Lancaster Public Library, which sells new and used books in one of the church’s classrooms. The craft show will fill seven classrooms, two hallways, two lobbies, and the gymnasium. Vendors will be set up on both the first and second floors of the church. The facility does not have an elevator, but the outside entrances to both levels are wheelchair accessible. Parking and admission will be free of charge. The show is popular among vendors and shoppers alike. Attendance at the show typically reaches 2,000 people, and the waiting list for vendors contains 235 names. Marconi begins accepting vendor applications each year in June. “Longtime vendors get the first invitations,” Marconi said. “We also have a waiting list for the gym.” New vendors start out in the hallways before moving into a classroom and eventually into the gymnasium as the spaces become available. “You have to pay your dues,” said stained glass maker and auxiliary member Barbara Keen. Marconi noted that the café area has been enlarged this year to make room for

people to sit down and enjoy snacks or a meal. Members of the parish will sell breakfast sandwiches, chicken corn soup, chili, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, tuna salad sandwiches, walking tacos, doughnuts, soda, and coffee. The proceeds from the food sales will be split between the parish and the auxiliary. Additionally, a baked goods table and a craft table will be supplied by the auxiliary. “We make many, many cookies, and we sell out by 10:30 a.m.,” Marconi said. Craft table coordinator Darlene Yourgal said she seeks out donations of handmade items from parishioners, and auxiliary members contribute as well. This year’s offerings will include kitchen angels made from potholders and towels, decorated pillowcases, knitted and crocheted items, stained glass decorations, ornaments, and cork wreaths. “The work other people do amazes me,” Keen commented. Auxiliary president Ann Marie Dumm shared that the craft show and sale facilitates fellowship and camaraderie among women in the parish. The event also provides funds for the group to distribute locally. The auxiliary purchases confirmation and First Communion gifts for parish members, awards two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the parish each year, contributes to community meals and church building repairs, donates to the American Cancer Society, and purchases Christmas gifts for Conestoga View residents. The auxiliary has also held a baby shower for A Woman’s Concern. To learn more about the craft show and sale, readers may call Marconi at 717872-2193 and leave a message. Vendors are asked to wait until next June to request addition to the waiting list. Pictured on front: The

Christmas Bird Count from pg 1 The Audubon CBC divides the Western Hemisphere into count circles. At least 10 volunteers, including a compiler to coordinate the process, count in each circle. The volunteers break up into small parties and follow assigned routes, which change little from year to year, counting every bird they see. In most count circles, some people also watch feeders instead of following routes. The count circle in southern Lancaster County is 15 miles in diameter and is centered at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), 5 miles south of Quarryville. Most of the count circle is within Lancaster County, with small segments in York and Chester counties, as well as Cecil County in Maryland. It includes Muddy Run Reservoir, Octoraro Lake, and 8 miles of the Susquehanna River. Using the power of volunteers, every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area will be recorded, contributing to a vast community science network that continues a tradition stretching back more than 100 years. The CBC tracks the health of bird populations at a scale that scientists could never accomplish alone. “The Christmas Bird Count is a tradition that everyone can participate in,” said Geoff LeBaron, Audubon CBC director. “Adding observations to more than a century of data helps scientists and conservationists discover trends that make our work more impactful. Participating in the Christmas Bird Count is a
fun tradition for anyone and everyone.” More than 300 peer-reviewed articles have resulted from analysis done with CBC data. Bird-related community science efforts are also critical to understanding how birds are responding to a changing climate. This documentation is what enabled

“We appreciate the community. They’re the people who bake and donate, and they’re the people who buy,” Friends member Peg Allar commented. “We do specialty trays for people to take home for parties or to share at the office,” added Friends member Donna Trimble. “We try to make (the sale) as festive as we can. Fisher stressed that donated items must be homemade, and they should be labeled if they contain nuts or are glutenfree or sugar-free. Anyone interested in donating baked goods may call Fisher at 717-786-7095. Cash and checks will be accepted to pay for sale purchases. Credit cards will not be accepted. The Friends group has opted to hold its monthly book sale on Dec. 13 and 14 instead of later in the month. The sale will have the same hours as the holiday gift and bake sale on Dec. 13, but it will close two hours later on Dec. 14. The books will be displayed in the library’s lobby and the Pennington Room. The proceeds from the sales will ultimately go to the library for its general operations. In 2019, the Friends donated $14,000 to the library in periodic disbursements. The group has also supported specific projects, such as the purchase of new bookshelves. “We’re looking for other ways to augment our income. It matters that we keep up with what we’ve promised to give,” Biscardi said. “The library is the hub of this town, but it doesn’t get the importance it deserves.” “Come on down,” Trimble invited. “Bring your appetite and your money. Support your local library. Every little bit helps.”

Students Take Part In FCS Day
the season
24 MONTHS
Students at Solanco High School were scheduled to participate in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Day on Dec. 3. The event is designed to encourage more families to dine in together more often. Students in the family and consumer sciences classes taught by Erin Byrnes and Christine Sawicki have been learning about and sharing with others the health, economic, physical and mental benefits of dining together with family, and also preparing meals together. An additional focus is device-free dining (no cell phones and other electronics). This is the second year that Solanco High School has participated in the annual American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences celebration of FCS Day. The goal is to encourage students, high school staff and community members to dine in with their families, friends, and/or neighbors and even prepare meals together during the week of Dec. 3 in the hope they will enjoy the benefits and will continue eating and perhaps cooking together in the following days and weeks. According to Byrnes, students were provided recipes that would enable them to prepare economical, easy, delicious and nutritious meals. The recipes include meals that are light dining, vegetarian and gluten-free. The recipes include chicken Parmesan stuffed peppers, cheeseburger soup, tomato bisque, vegetable and three-cheese stuffed shells, skinny Alfredo, roast pork tenderloin, potsticker stirfry, and more. Byrnes emailed school staff with recipes and encouragement to cook and eat together with family. Students have also received tips on how to use social media and other communications to promote dining in among their family and friends.
