When Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC) was unable to host its annual Trunk or Treat event last year, the congregation’s fellowship committee, which includes Amy Rineer, Barbara Josephian, and Heather Musser, organized a Christmas event for the public. Journey to Bethlehem is a walk-through live Nativity experience that features six scenes: a visit with the prophet Isaiah, a Jewish marketplace, King Herod’s palace, angels and shepherds, an innkeeper’s house in Bethlehem, and the manger. The second annual Journey to Bethlehem will take place on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at CLPC, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. While waiting for a shepherd guide, attendees will sit in the church sanctuary, where there will be live Christmas music provided by the Lampeter-Strasburg High School marching band, the Chestnut Level instrumentalists, and See Live Nativity pg 4

Live Nativity from pg 1 the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Madrigal Singers. The outdoor live Nativity will consist of about 50 characters and a variety of animals, such as sheep, lambs, and miniature horses. After walking through the live Nativity, people can go inside the Family Life Center for cookies. A craft will also be provided to children. According to pastor John Hartman, Journey to Bethlehem attracted over 300 visitors last year. “It’s a nice launch into the holiday season for folks,” he said. “People should come to experience the Christmas story as it’s shared in the Bible.” Like last year, Boy Scout Troop 91 will assist with hanging lights, Robert Fulton Fire Company will direct parking and maintain traffic control, and Wakefield EMS will provide wheelchairs for those requiring assistance. Golf carts will also be available. There is no cost to attend Journey to Bethlehem, but

Local high school seniors and local photographer Regina Gutierrez will bring Project Beauty to Lancaster County. This national campaign was started by Cincinnati High School senior photographer Thomas Nguyen with the goal of redefining what true beauty is and how beauty is portrayed on social media. Any student in ninth through 12th grades is invited to have his or her photo taken, and the images will be displayed at a celebration in late March or early April 2022. Gutierrez is donating her time for this project, and all proceeds will benefit Girls on the Run of Lancaster, which serves Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The campaign kickoff photoshoot will take place on Sunday, Dec. 12, in the orangery at Conestoga House and Gardens, 8 N. Queen St., Suite 12E, Lancaster, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additional photoshoots will also be scheduled, with details forthcoming. Gutierrez and her Class of 2022 senior team will take the photos. Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has changed its name to Mennonite Life to welcome new communities and generations into Mennonite history and local history movements. The name change and rebrand signify a renewed commitment to clear communication and indicate that the organization is open to everyone. Those choosing the new name felt that Mennonite Life improves visual impact and will be easy to remember. The Mennonite Life campus on Millstream Road in Lancaster offers a Visitors Center, formerly called Mennonite Information Center, which introduces guests to Mennonites and hosts the Biblical Tabernacle Experience. In the Collections building, visitors can enjoy the Mennonite Life Museum or research using its archives
and library. The museum in Willow Street has gone by many names, starting with The Hans Herr House. Realizing the house was built by Christian Herr, and there was no definitive documentation on whether Christian’s father, Hans, ever lived there, the name changed more than a decade ago to the 1719 Herr House & Museum. The 1719 Museum simplifies the existing name. At the 1719 Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century life through a guided visit to the 1719 Herr House. Visitors will also learn about the history and cultures of Native Americans by experiencing a full-sized replica of an indigenous longhouse, interpreted by a guide. To learn more, including hours of operation, visit www.mennonitelife.org.

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event unless otherwise stated. To register, call 717-295-2055 or visit www.lancastercounty parks.org and click on Online Program Registration. Nature Story Time: “Owl Moon,” a program for children age 2 and older, will run from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11. A naturalist will lead story time followed by a presentation of the Environmental Center’s owl specimen collection. Bird Study Merit Badge will be offered on Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program will assist the Scouts age 10 and older in completing specific requirements for the Bird Study Merit Badge. Participation in the annual Christmas Bird Count scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Environmental Center will fulfill the remaining requirements. Participants should dress for extended time walking and birdwatching outdoors and bring a water bottle, snack, and lunch as well as a field notebook, binoculars, and a bird guide, if possible. Hibernation: W here Did All the Animals Go? will be offered on Sunday, Dec. 12, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. A naturalist will lead a group discussion on hibernating animals, how they stay warm, and where they hide. Participants age 8 and older should dress appropriately for a short hike and lesson about hibernation. Holiday Papermaking, for people of all ages, will take place on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participating artists may use provided materials to create unique papers, and they may also bring additional materials like dried flowers, seeds, and cookie cutters. They should dress for a potentially messy craft.
