When the organization that chartered Scouts BSA Troop 76, Cub Scout Pack 76, and Sea Scout Ship 76 of New Providence withdrew its support in 2016, the three groups were up a creek without the proverbial paddle. Scoutmaster and Skipper Fritz Knerr reached out to several organizations in the area, and the Southern Lancaster County FarmerSportsmen’s Association (SLCFSA) enthusiastically stepped up. In May, the SLCFSA received the honor of Charter Organization of the Year from the Scouts USA PA Dutch Council Conestoga River District. “We’re trying to build enthusiasm for Scouting,” Knerr said of the award, which is part of a collection of awards given annually. “We’re trying to recognize people and organizations who are stepping up to support the Scouting

The partnership between the Scouts and the SLCFSA has been a good one, Knerr commented. “The charter organization works with a troop or pack to deliver a quality program,” explained Pack 76 committee chair Jena Feltch. “In our case, we feel the SLCFSA’s mission really dovetails well with the Scouting program.” The SLCFSA has its Conservation Pledge, while the Scouts have the Outdoor Code, both of which support similar ideals. “And part of the SLCFSA constitution specifies a focus on youths,” Knerr added. Initially, the SLCFSA hosted Scout meetings at its headquarters, 742 Hollow Road, New Providence. In December 2016, however, the facility was destroyed by arson, and multiple challenges have delayed its replacement. “Luckily, the Scouts have been proactive in finding places to meet,” Wilson See Scouting Partnership pg 8

“I’ve actually had someone email me and ask me if we’re doing this again and when. It’s good to know people like it,” Al Strausner mused. Together, Strausner and his grandson, Matthew Palmeri, built a temporary model railroad layout last year at West Willow United Methodist Church, 118 W. Willow Road, Willow Street. During the six days it was open in December 2018, more than 180 people visited. “People like to come and talk,” Strausner said. Matthew, age 12, is in sixth grade at Martic Elementary School. He and his grandfather have shared a love of model trains for as long as he can remember. Matthew helps with the layout in the basement of Strausner’s Willow Street home, and he has one at his own house. “My layout’s a mess because I’m redoing it all again,” Matthew commented. Matthew ’s mother, Amy Palmeri, occasionally provides assistance with Matthew’s projects. With last year’s holiday layout, she served as Matthew’s assistant. “We had everything on a cart, and she handed me the items so I could fill in the layout,” Matthew said. “My mom does help - hopefully she’ll do that this year - and she sits and talks to people (when they visit the layout).” The design will differ from last year’s, but it will still be a realistic town. About 50 Plasticville buildings are slated to populate the HO- and O-scale layouts. Strausner, age 75, said he has had a few of the buildings since he was younger than Matthew, adding, “My aunt and uncle would get me one for every holiday.” During most of the year, the structures line two walls in Strausner’s basement in what the duo called a Plasticville museum. Some of the buildings are displayed with their cardboard boxes. Strausner counted about six generations of visual design among the boxes. He noted that some people have built collections of the paper packages. “I don’t care about the box,” Strausner remarked. “Some peo-

ple buy them just for the box and don’t care about whether all the pieces are there. I want the parts.” According to Strausner’s go-to information repository, www.tandem-associates.com, Plasticville was introduced in 1947 by Bachmann Bros. and was designed to be used with Lionel and American Flyer electric model trains. In 1952, the company received a patent for its snap-together construction, which did not require glue. Plastic buildings were produced by other companies, and Strausner owns several of those models, but they will not be used on this year’s holiday layout. Strausner plans to create information sheets about the layout’s components for visitors who would like to learn more. Choir risers will be set along the outside edges of the layout as a safe way for children to view the layout and watch the trains move along the tracks. Like last year, the layout will include two tracks, with one locomotive and its accompanying cars for each. Matthew noted that several engines will be rotated to pull each train. “They usually run one day, and the next day they don’t work,” he said. Strausner obtained additional pieces of track to improve the design. “I have new tracks for more swooping curves so we don’t have as many disconnections and derailments,” he explained. The layout at the church will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 14, 21, and 28, and Sundays, Dec. 15, 22, and 29. There is no cost to attend. “We just do it for the heck of it, for the fun of it,” Strausner commented. For more information about the model train layout, readers may contact Strausner at william.strausner@yahoo.com or 717-917-6922. Pictured on front: Al Strausner (left) and his grandson, Matthew Palmeri, will welcome guests to view a Plasticville-furnished model railroad layout at West Willow United Methodist Church on Saturdays and Sundays from Dec. 14 to 29.

Local and regional artists will have even more display space at this year’s Christmas Folk Art Show, as the Manheim Historical Society has invited exhibitors to expand throughout the entire first floor of the Manheim Historical Society Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim, where the annual event takes place. This year’s event is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. Admission is free, and complimentary refreshments will be available. Woodcarver Doug Shaw, who has participated in the event since its inception more than two decades ago, explained that in the past artists were set up in the upstairs portion of the station. Now displays will extend into the lower part of the building that originally functioned as the men’s and women’s waiting rooms and ticket office in the historic station. “Architecturally, the men’s and ladies’ waiting rooms are the same; it’s just that there were spittoons on the men’s side,” noted Shaw with a laugh. In the ticket office, visitors will be able to see original accoutrements from an old Manheim schoolhouse, as well as train sta-

tion memorabilia on the walls. Local author Dennis Denenberg will be on hand to sell and autograph copies of his book, “50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet!” Denenberg coauthored the book with Lorraine Roscoe, and it was a 2006 Notable Children’s Trade Book. A portion of proceeds from book sales that weekend will be donated to the historical society. In addition to Shaw, the exhibitors and their crafts will include Cynthia Baker, handwoven textiles, felt hats, and wool applique; Dan Barthold, pen and ink illustrations; Mike Brown, paper mache and chalkware folk art; Madeline Erickson, German stars and feather trees; Bob and Sally Hughes, River Rat Pottery; P.J. Rankin Hults, folk painted paper cutting; Karen Hurd, traditional tin work; Jim Murphy, painted furniture; Judy Perilstein, handcrafted vintage antique button jewelry; Lee Pfoutz, primitive wild fowl carvings; and Lynn Taylor, Kingston Pottery and Fine Ceramics. Many of the artists have devoted fans and followers from well beyond the central Pennsylvania area, and the show draws visitors from numerous states. “Last year, people were lined up two and a half hours before we opened,” Shaw recalled.

With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving

curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions

T

radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season.

day shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses.

Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints.

Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. How To Cut Back On Holiday Waste he holiday season is a joyful time of year. But the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day also tend to be very wasteful. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that household waste increases by more than 25 percent during the holiday season. Reducing waste come the holiday season does not mean celebrants have to forgo big family meals or beautifully wrapped gifts. In fact, there are several ways to reduce waste without spoiling the spirit of the season. Give eco-conscious gifts. The environment may not be the first thing that comes to mind when holiday shoppers are looking for gifts for their loved ones, but giving reusable gifts can have a positive, long-term impact on the planet. Reusable coffee mugs, water bottles or straws can dramatically reduce waste over time, and such items make great stocking stuffers. Shoppers also can look for eco-friendly gift items made from recycled materials, which run the gamut from home furnishings to calendars to clothing. Shop local - and forgo shopping bags. Shipping products across the country can involve a large expenditure of gas and packaging waste. Shopping locally not only supports people in the community, it also makes it easy to use reusable bags or not use a bag at all. Several local communities also have a variety of shops in a concentrated area, so walking from store to store can also help reduce shoppers’ carbon footprint. Reuse holiday-specific items. Many people only use gift wrap, gift boxes and gift bags during the holiday season. Such items are oftentimes discarded after Christmas morning. But these items can be reused to cut back on holiday waste. Reusing wrapping paper from year to year can be especially beneficial to the environment. That’s because wrapping paper tends to be dyed or laminated, and many wrapping papers contain non-paper additives that cannot be recycled. Reusing wrapping paper, purchasing only recyclable paper or wrapping gifts in old newspapers or magazines can help holiday celebrants reduce their carbon footprints. Prepare less food and donate any leftovers. The Worldwatch Institute notes that, during the holiday season, celebrants generate three times as much food waste as they do during other times of the year. Large family meals are a tradition of the holiday season, but hosts who routinely find themselves discarding leftovers can plan on preparing less food this year. Consider how much guests are likely to eat and plan meals accordingly instead of buying enough food to feed a small army. Donate leftovers to nearby shelters so nothing goes to waste. Recycle live Christmas trees. Local residents can explore options for recycling live Christmas trees when it’s time to take down the decorations after the holidays. For example, Lancaster County Central Park holds an annual Christmas tree recycling operation. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. There is a nominal suggested donation per tree, with the funds going toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. Local residents may contact their municipal office for more information about other programs in their community.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience

W

hen shopping this holiday season, keep in mind that “shopping small” not only helps the local community but that it can also mean a more pleasant experience for you too. While small businesses may not have the marketing muscle to compete with large corporations, many small businesses have perfected the art of providing top-notch experiences for their customers by embracing several strategies that make consumers feel appreciated.

Improved customer service

Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.

■ Responses

Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that custom-

ers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53 percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, thesamesurveyfoundthat63percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can read a company’s response and know that owners want their customers to have as positive an experience as possible.

■ Personalization

ALWAYS GET A

Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one on-one with customers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer more unique products, including customized items.

he holiday season is rife with tradition. One of the most recognizable traditions involves wrapping gifts. While the wrapping paper many gift givers use today is a relatively recent phenomenon, the tradition of wrapping gifts is centuries old with some historians even suggesting it dates back to ancient times. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that many ancient cultures celebrated various holidays that included exchanging gifts, adding that it’s very likely that, even in ancient times, gifts were wrapped to surprise their eventual recipients. Bojagi is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth that might have begun being used sometime during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period, which began in 57 B.C. and ended in A.D. 668 The Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which can be traced back to the 17th century and possibly as far back as A.D. 710, involves using a traditional wrapping cloth to transport certain items, including gifts. As for the gift wrap familiar to today’s holiday celebrants, that traces its origins to the early 1900s. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman founded the first gift wrap company in the United States in 1903. As a special way to mark the chorus’ 70th anniversary, former members have been invited to return and sing with the group at the Christmas concert in Christiana. “We’re doing a lot of the numbers they did in past years,” Esworthy said. Currently, there are 25 to 30 mixed voices in the chorus. Residents of Chester and Lancaster counties are welcome to join the group, which meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company. “We rehearse in the fall for our Christmas concerts, then we take a winter break and don’t pick up until the spring,” Esworthy said. The group has sung the national anthem many times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Barnstormers baseball teams. For many years, the chorus presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J. “We don’t do that much traveling anymore. Most of our things are fairly local,” Esworthy said. Troop 76 members have completed several stream stabilization projects and have spread grass seeds. Recently, the Scouts helped to restore and refresh the wooden sign that marked the SLCFSA’s cooperative trout nursery, which was founded by SLCFSA members John Herr and Kenny Shoemaker on private land and is operated in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Senior patrol leader Josh Sample led the troop members who worked on the sign. Pack members helped to reinstall the sign and build a low wall around it. They plan to plant flowers when the weather is better. New members are welcome to join any of the Scout groups. Pack 76 is a family pack, as it includes girls, and is open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Troop 76 is still open to boys only, but the committee is working on establishing a girls’ troop, and membership starts at age 11 or having completed fifth grade. Ship 76 is small enough that meetings are not regular occurrences. Youths of any gender ages 14 to 20 may join the Sea Scouts. Simultaneous enrollment in the troop and the ship is possible. Carving Out Time For The Holidays from pg 1

R052345

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The plaintive strains of “Silent Night” played on a harmonica filled the air as members of the Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association (MTWA) and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) placed ornaments on a small artificial evergreen tree on Dec. 4. Each of the more than 170 ornaments had been painstakingly carved and decorated by members of the two groups. “Some of them are so beautifully ornate. They really bring the spirit of Christmas,” commented Lauren Musser, corporate and community relationship manager for Hospice & Community Care (HCC). The ornaments are shaped like mittens, Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas, evergreen trees, angels, birds, and snowmen, and there is even a Noah’s ark with a pair of delicately carved giraffes. The tree is located in the chaplains’ office of the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, near Mount Joy. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are managed during generally short-term stays before returning home. During December, HCC chaplains and social workers invite clients’ family members to choose ornaments from the tree as holiday keepsakes. “People are here, but the holidays are still happening around them,” Musser said. “This creates a

sweet moment for them to get through this holiday season.” “(The ornaments are) a tangible expression of care that can be carried on by families,” chaplain Kevin Frain remarked. “The memories associated with an ornament may be painful, but (they are) meaningful.” This is the 11th consecutive year that the MTWA has given a decorated tree to HCC’s inpatient care facility and the third that LCWC has participated. The tradition was started by the late Bob Stampf, who was a founder of the MTWA, when the group members sought to share woodcarving with the community in an impactful way. HCC was suggested, as an MTWA member had a relative receiving care. MTWA member Ruth Stetter related that the ornaments went over so well that first year that when she went to pick up the empty tree, Musser joked that Stetter may have it only if she brought it back with more ornaments the following December. “It’s a good thing (to do),” Stetter said. “It makes you feel good to do this for folks.” MTWA member Mark Arbogast coordinates the ornament project and is also a member of the LCWC. When the MTWA, which has only about 10 members, could no longer create the necessary number of ornaments, Arbogast invited the 80-member LCWC to join the effort. “The Lancaster County WoodCarvers was very happy to jump in and help,” Arbogast said. Approximately half of the LCWC’s members contributed pieces, and both styles and intricacy vary. “The details of these pieces astound me every year,” Musser said. “This is art, and they bring their gift right here to hospice.” Both carving groups have a mission to preserve the art of woodcarving. The MTWA runs a sixweek class for beginners starting in April every year. Newcomers are also welcome to attend meetings, which are held at the Stauffer Mansion, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on the last Wednesday of every month. No meeting will be held this month, however, as the last Wednesday is Christmas Day. Interested individuals may call or text Stetter at 717-629-7111 for more information. The LCWC meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster. Guests are welcome. For more information, readers may visit www.lancarvers.com. To learn about HCC, readers may visit www.hospiceandcommunity care.org or call 877-506-0149. Temple and FHC consultants from Lancaster and York counties were available to help patrons use the computers to navigate FamilySearch, which highlights the divisions of FamilyTree, a repository for family history, and Search, a search engine with millions of family history resources. Visitors were invited to try a volunteer indexing project that is presently being conducted by FamilySearch to index all the authorized (author-approved) digitized records stored in the Granite Vault in Salt Lake City, Utah. The indexing makes the resources available for patrons so that they no longer need to search through the antiquated microfilmed records still available in many centers until the indexing is completed. Community members are invited to memorialize a beloved pet, remember a special person or show their support for the community by purchasing a personalized brick to be installed in the vestibule of the dog park at the Oxford Area Regional Park, 900 W. Locust St., Oxford. The first round of personalized bricks was sold and installed in the dog park earlier this year. By popular request, the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA) is now offering a second round of brick sales. “There were a lot of people who missed the first round of brick sales. When they saw how great they look, they wanted bricks too,” said OARA secretary and Elk Township board member Marcella Peyre-Ferry. Personalized bricks are spread throughout the paving bricks in the vestibule. When a second round of brick sales is complete, a new group will be ordered and installed. The timing of the installation will depend on the rate of sales and weather conditions for installation. Peyre-Ferry said that the bricks make a great gift idea. Although the actual brick will not be at hand to wrap and put under the Christmas tree, a certificate acknowledging the purchase and the message that will be printed on the brick will be available. Proceeds will benefit the OARA and help with maintenance costs for the dog

Dyslexia Center Receives Donation During the fall reunion of the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Barry E. Theal, 32nd Degree Mason, Past Master of Mount Lebanon Lodge 226 and Worshipful Master of Manheim Lodge 587, presented a check for $2,500 to the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster. The check represents the proceeds of a Detailing for Dyslexia event organized and sponsored by Theal on Aug. 10. The event brought automotive detailers from across the nation together to

share their knowledge of and passion for the detailing trade. Held at the Hershey Region Antique Automobile Club of America in Hershey, Detailing for Dyslexia featured keynote speaker Renny Doyle, a world-renowned detail mentor, trainer, author and detailer of Air Force One, and Billy Baugus, owner of American Detailer Garage. Both donated their time and talents to the event. Plans are already underway for the 2020 Detailing for Dyslexia.

LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation) recently approved funding to four Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs. These programs impact young people who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants program is an important part of LOHF’s strategy to improve access to behavioral health support for youths and children locally. A grant of $8,300 was awarded to Bethany Christian Services’ Together Facing the Challenge Project. The funds will train and engage 28 staff members from Bethany’s foster care and counseling departments in an evidence-based model for therapeutic foster care that takes a strengths-based educational approach with youths. This will prepare staff to train foster parents and additional staff. COBYS Family Services was awarded $14,081 for increasing child behavioral health services through the Supervision of Unlicensed Therapists program. The funds will provide licensure training and supervision to two new therapists toward their professional licenses, allowing COBYS to expand behavioral health services to 40 more children per week. Mental Health America of Lancaster County was awarded $11,000 to partner with Teen Hope, a program of Samaritan Counseling Center. The partnership will expand its reach and provide mental health education to ninth- and 10th-grade students prior to screenings for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. Milagro House was awarded $14,000 for Streamlining Behavioral Health Access: Supporting Women and Children Affected by Trauma and Poverty Initiative. The initiative is a partnership between Milagro House, Clare House, and Good Samaritan Services to restructure education programs serving mothers and children in these shelters, using a trauma-informed approach. LOHF’s Children’s Behavioral Health Grants Program aims to elevate the mental well-being of youths and children by supporting local programs that help to answer one or both of two questions: How can we build the talent pipeline in behavioral health care for youths and children in Lancaster County? And how will we improve access to mental well-being for youths and children in Lancaster County? Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for individuals from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available. Applications for the spring grant cycle are due by Sunday, March 1, 2020. Tax-exempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org.
