MOPC’s Nuts ‘N’ Bolts Sale Will Return

Look Inside

Serving The Lord And Serving The Community BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) and the Quarryville Lions Club have teamed up once again to host their third annual New Year’s Day fundraiser meal on Saturday, Jan. 1. The meal of pork and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls, and dessert will be available for takeout only from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC), 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville. “I think (the event) is just an awesome opportunity for two organizations to come together and to do something that not only benefits both the ministry and the club, but also just people in the community who have looked forward to the meal,” said Eddie Adams, youth pastor at Memorial UMC.

Members of MOPC continue to serve in Tamshiyacu, Peru. Together, the two churches raised funds to build a sister church in Tamshiyacu in 2008. Church members from both Pennsylvania and Missouri typically travel to Peru every year and stay for one to two weeks. While there, they lead Bible school and work on construction projects at the church and within the village. Over the years, the mission teams have completed several projects in Peru, such as doing maintenance on the church, building a playground for special needs children, installing a running water system for the church, and supplying malaria nets and parasite medicines. For more information about the Nuts ‘N’ Bolts consignment sale, call MOPC at 717-786-3402.

2022 marks the 17th year that the congregation of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC), 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, has partnered with its sister church in Tamshiyacu, a village along the Amazon River in northeast Peru. “We strive to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus to the folks in this region of the Amazon,” said Daniel Henry, MOPC mission team leader. To raise funds for the Peru mission, MOPC will host its eighth annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts consignment sale at the church on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who wish to sell items should contact Boni Henry, one of

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders are asked to register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle. The Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, in collaboration with Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register by calling 717-295-2055 and must be accompanied by

out that there are two important commitments that potential adopters should examine when considering a new pet. “I would say people who are prepared for the time and financial commitments (are more successful pet owners),” said Vollmer. She noted that while animals are spayed, neutered, and microchipped by the league, there will still be expenses related to yearly examinations and vaccinations, and she added that older pets may need special food, medicine, and joint supplements. Time commitments may vary with the animal, but Vollmer warns that this time of year may give a false sense of reality. “Around the holidays, people are off and have free time, but once they go back to work (they will have

back on behavior we’re seeing and whether or not we think they will do OK with each other,” she stated, adding that the child’s energy level will be considered. She noted that younger animals are often better with children. When a new animal comes home, it should be given its own space to decompress and dogs should be taken out often. “They need to get adjusted,” she said, adding that cats especially can be overwhelmed easily. Lastly, Vollmer commented on the element of surprise in getting a new animal. “Sometimes people aren’t expecting a commitment for a present,” she said. “We tell people to make the surprise coming to the shelter to pick out the animal. It’s still a great experience, but it circumvents some potential issues.” More information about the Humane League may be found at https://humanepa.org/ partners/humane-league-of -lancaster-county or by searching for “the Humane League of Lancaster County” on Facebook.

home, it is important to introduce them slowly and have plans in place in case they do not warm up to each other right away. In the case of a dog, a family may bring the pet to meet the potential adoptee. She noted that a kitten may be a better choice than an adult cat if the home already has a dog in it. Whether small children live in the home or visit often is also a determining factor. Vollmer noted that the league recommends bringing children or grandchildren to meet the dog or cat at the shelter. “We want to see how they are here and give adopters feed-

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will celebrate Yuletide on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 26 and 27. After a 2020 hiatus due to COVID and with an eye to lingering COVID concerns, “Voices of Yuletide Past” will be offered with several new twists. Rather than the crowds of people present during the holiday open houses of past Yuletides, visitors can expect a more intimate experience as they arrive at the mansion on Jan. 6, 1795, Twelfth Night. At the turn of the 18th century, many Lancaster families of English extraction like the Hands and the Yeateses celebrated the Old English traditions of Yuletide, which consisted of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Yuletide started on Dec. 25, which was primarily a day of religious observance of the birth of Christ. In the following days, people held dinners, card parties and balls, culminating on Jan. 6, Twelfth Night, which commemorated the magi’s adoration of the baby Jesus. In contrast to today, Christmas Day was only the beginning of Yuletide, not its primary focus. Gifts, when given at all, tended to be little more than trinkets and tokens. Yuletide was about family, friends and fun rather than the giving and receiving of gifts. During “Voices of Yuletide Past,” as groups of guests are escorted from room to candlelit and holly-bedecked room, they will see the sights and hear the sounds of a household about to welcome guests to the first Yuletide Ball to be held in the new mansion. Although none of the characters will be seen, guests will hear the voices of Katherine Hand, Edward Hand, Jasper Yeates, Sarah Yeates, Dorothy Hand, young Jasper and Edward Hand, and a female servant trying to get the younger children ready for bed. This program represents a collaborative effort with both the Theater of the Seventh Sister - whose actors will offer dramatic recorded readings of character scripts written by Rock Ford board member Pamela Stoner and executive director Sam Slaymaker - and with Barry Atticks, associate professor of music business technology at Millersville University. Atticks will provide the recording studio for use by the actors, and his students will create and edit the voices and sound effects as well as position the necessary sound equipment in the mansion. The students will receive
