The Southern Hope Foundation (SHF) officially launched in May 2019 after avid couponclippers Brittany Spangler and her mother, Cathy Cornelius, realized there was community support for their projects that help Southern End residents in need. Initially, the duo used their stockpiling skills to collect personal care products and nonperishable food that they gave to those who could not afford to purchase their own. With the support of Nikki Keys, who eventually became the SHF’s vice president and treasurer, Spangler and Cornelius “adopted” families for Christmas, and the SHF took off from there. “We started as a Christmas thing, but we wanted to keep growing,” said SHF marketing chair Daniella Falconio. One group of recipients of
this year’s benevolence was unexpected, however. “We have helped 30 businesses with finances during the (pandemic),” Falconio said. “We were able to help a lot of people.” The funds came through events held in the “Southern Chances” Facebook group. Thanks to the novel coronavirus, the bingo the SHF hosted last year was unable to be repeated this year. Additionally, Southern Chances proceeds have supported the Wakefield Lions Club, with which the SHF is forming a collaboration, and helped households afford to heat their homes. SHF works with Solanco Neighborhood Ministries and assists with meeting Solanco School District students’ hygiene needs. The group also meets other needs as it learns about them. “We are still getting requests
for diapers, wipes, lotion, and household supplies. Lots of families can’t work (right now),” Falconio said. “People can contact us if they need help. We want to be able to help more people.” The SHF has not forgotten about Christmas. The organization posted snowflake trees in two locations in the Southern End and invited people to take snowflakes bearing information about individuals and what they need or want for Christmas. A total of 18 families and close to 80 children received gifts and holiday cheer through the snowflake tree project. Anyone who would like to support the SHF’s efforts to help neighbors in the Southern End, as well as anyone who needs assistance, may send a message to the “Southern Hope Foundation” page on Facebook or email southernhope foundation@gmail.com.

anticipates a reduction in total revenue for 2021-22. The budget could contain a potential deficit of as much as $4 million. Major factors in a tax increase and potential budget deficit would include district expenditures for personal protection equipment and disinfectant supplies, a 10% growth in the district’s health care costs, a 2% increase in payroll and benefit expenses, increased pension costs to the district, an expansion of contracted services, and a potential reduction in the collection of earned income tax because of uncertainty pertaining to the economy and possible delays in business reopenings and hirings. Approval of a proposed final budget is expected in April, with final budget adoption required in June.

The Solanco School District is in the process of developing its budget for the 2021-22 school year. In a budget presentation to the Solanco School Board on Dec. 7, Solanco business manager Sandy Tucker said the Pennsylvania Department of Education has established an Act 1 index that would limit an increase in Solanco’s real estate taxes to no greater than 3.5%. Tucker discussed possible board adoption of an opt-out resolution which would commit the district to a tax increase within the Act 1 index of 3.5%. A real estate tax hike of 3.5% would increase property taxes in Solanco by $38.36 per $100,000 of assessed value and would generate about $1 million in revenue for the district. The school district

Former NICU Family Gives Back BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
Four years after her son, Lucas, was born prematurely, Carmina Rodriguez of Lancaster still remembers the encouragement offered by a family that was in the Women & Babies Hospital (WBH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with her. Lucas was due on Feb. 23, 2017, but while attending a church service in October 2016, Carmina unexpectedly began experiencing contractions and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. She was admitted and spent a month in the hospital on bedrest before she gave birth via Caesarean section on Nov. 23, 2016. Carmina’s husband, Ryan,
was able to hold Lucas, who weighed only 2 pounds 4 ounces and was 13.5 inches long, and show him to Carmina. “I have no memory of seeing him at all,” Carmina said. “He was rushed right to the NICU. I was not allowed to hold him for a week.” Lucas’ growth was on track for a child at 23 weeks gestation, but he also had jaundice, so in addition to being on oxygen and enteral nutrition, Lucas had to stay under a special light. Carmina, who had quit her job providing inhome care for elderly individuals and veterans, spent her days sitting by the incubator. Lucas might have been the one living in the isolette, but Carmina also felt isolated. On the day Lucas

underwent a blood transfusion, Carmina toughed it out by his side. But when the procedure concluded and she went to the cafeteria, she broke down. The family ahead of her in the checkout line did what they could to console Carmina, as they also had a child in the NICU. “I get it. We’re here,” the other parents told Carmina while paying for her coffee. That family took their child home while Lucas lingered. He was finally released in late January 2017. In the four years since, Carmina has encountered that family several times, and she is happy to exchange updates on their children, both of whom are thriving. Carmina also wants to make sure other NICU parents know they are not alone. Following the example of church friends who donated care packages after their own NICU experience two years ago, Carmina crowdsourced support for kits that she, Ryan, and Lucas presented at the WBH NICU on Lucas’ fourth birthday. The kits

contained Stroopies, cloth masks, handknit newborn hats, scrunchies, keychains, lip gloss, hand cream, facial lotion, makeup wipes, tissues, gift cards for Hot Z Pizza, and packs of encouraging Scripture verses. Carmina hopes to make this a yearly tradition. “I want to give back in one way or another. (The NICU) was
such a big impact on our lives and on Lucas’,” she said. “When I hear of other moms going through it, I get it. I was there. As hard as it was, it makes me appreciate how life is so precious and how fragile it is. It’s just amazing to watch a baby fight for his life. I make a big deal out of milestones because it could have been different.”
COBYS Family Services will offer resource family orientation sessions on Tuesdays, Jan. 5 and 19, at 6 p.m. at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster. A daytime session will also be held on Monday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. These identical sessions will be held virtually until meetings are able to transition back to being held in person. These orientations are designed for families that want to learn more about foster care and adoption through foster care. During each two-hour educational session, families will receive an introduction to the roles, expectations, and approval process for COBYS resource families. The orientation is free and places no obligation on attendees. For more information or to reserve a space for an orientation session, readers may contact a COBYS resource home coordinator at 717-656-6580 or care forkids@cobys.org. The Samaritan Counseling Center’s annual Ethics in Business program will accept nominations through Friday, Jan. 15. This award program is an annual recognition of companies and organizations that demonstrate excellence in the areas of integrity, fairness and justice, stewardship, life enhancement, and transparency. Following the deadline, each organization must officially accept the nomination prior to the extensive review process. The review process includes the provision of policy manuals, mission and value
statements, and other procedural documents by each nominee. It also includes an employee survey and a virtual or in-person site visit from trained site visitors who are members of the local business community. Additionally, the center partners with Franklin & Marshall College students in a Corporate Responsibility class, with students providing in-depth research on each nominee. All the information collected is then compiled into a multipage report, which is provided to an anonymous selection committee made up of business owners and

Joining the global movement designed to celebrate philanthropy and encourage social good, this Giving Tuesday, the Giant Company recognized and thanked six community partners in Pennsylvania that share its purpose of connecting families for a better future. Giant Company awarded product and financial donations totaling $25,000 to six local nonprofit organizations across Pennsylvania. Among the organizations receiving donations was the
Power Packs Project. Located in Lancaster, the nonprofit empowers families with education and ingredients to create nutritious weekend meals so their children return to school on Mondays fed and ready to learn. Funds from the Giant Company will help provide holiday dinners to more than 1,000 families served by the organization. Other nonprofit organizations that received donations were Autism Wings in Plymouth Meeting, Big Heart Harvest in Douglasville,
Capital Area Head Start in Harrisburg, Carlisle Area Family Life Center and Shiremanstown Fire Department. The Giant Company’s Giving Tuesday donation continues the company’s longstanding tradition of giving back during the holiday season. In November, the company donated a record-breaking 10,000 turkeys to 28 partner food banks located across its footprint in time for Thanksgiving. Team members from Giant and Martin’s also contributed
500 volunteer hours to help pack boxes and restock shelves in advance of the holiday season. The Giant Company hosted an in-store food drive to further stock the shelves of community hunger relief organizations. Established in 2012, Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on holiday and end-of-year giving.
