She participated in the annual art competition among high school students to design the district’s Christmas card. Solanco High School art teacher Candace Rakers explained that Lay La’s work, titled “Gifts of the Season,” is a representational pastel painting on paper. Using colors and symbolism, the painting features seasonal fruits, flowers, and pastries. The message inside reads, “Warmest thoughts and best wishes for a joyful holiday season, Solanco School District School Board and Administration.” The Solanco Christmas card has been sent to all Solanco School District employees and school district superintendents in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as businesses, organizations, and com-

Being grateful for the community’s support, Solanco’s girls’ basketball team wanted to give back. And so, for the fifth year, team members took part in collecting and making donations to the Solanco toy drive recently held in the basement of Nickel Mine Floor Covering in Quarryville. All the toys collected went directly to families in the Solanco community. “It’s our way to give back,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “The community supports us all winter, and this is a small way we can help out and say thank you to our community. “As a teacher at Smith Middle School, I learned about the toy drive when other grades were doing a collection. When I heard about it, I reached out and found out that it was organized by Jodi Conklin. Since I taught and coached both Emily and Haley Conklin, and since I was looking for a way for the girls’ basketball program to be involved in a community service project, we decided this would be a good fit,” he added. “We have been helping to collect and donate ever since.” This year, approximately 200 toys were collected at home games against Elizabethtown on Dec. 10 and Ephrata on Dec. 12. “Our athletic director, Anthony Hall, allowed us to hold collection nights twice,” said McDowell. “I reached out to both the Elizabethtown and Ephrata programs and extended an invitation to join us in a great cause. Both programs accepted immediately and brought toys to

They even collected last season when we traveled to their home court and sent toys home with us. We are very appreciative of both programs and fans for bringing toys to donate.” WRESTLING After opening the season with a third-place finish at its own Mule Classic, the Mules wrestling team more recently settled for sixth place out of 28 at the Penn Manor Invitational on Dec. 13 and 14. Dominic Flatt (106) and Nick Yannutz (195), who was fourth at Solanco, finished in second place. Flatt scored three falls to get to the finals opposite Liberty’s Connor Werner, while Yannutz pinned two opponents en route to the finals. Other place winners include Ronnie Fulton (fourth at 132), Nate Neuhaser (fourth at HWT), and Weston Bare (seventh at 113).

Faulkner Chevrolet helped spearhead a campaign, alongside Faulkner BMW, in conjunction with The Salvation Army to bring Christmas cheer to 75 children throughout Lancaster County. It was the first collaboration between the two Faulkner dealerships and the local Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree Program is an annual event. Children ages of 2 to 18 can request gifts, and the Lancaster community supports the
efforts to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the winter months. Requested toys include crafts, board games, dolls, stuffed animals, and more. The goal is for donors to give what they are able and bring joy to children during the holiday season. Faulkner Chevrolet general manager Chad Berger organized the dealerships’ participation in the project.

Community Association. A major area of focus for Bender during his two decades of service to Solanco was academics and working to make education even more valued in the community. Bliss expressed appreciation for Bender’s work on curricula and his service on academic committees. School board directors in
Pennsylvania are volunteers. They are not paid for their many hours of time and service provided for students, families and communities. Bliss provided Ressler, Risk and Bender with a Solanco Plaque of Appreciation, and the retiring board members also received a Certificate of Recognition from the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

Leon Ressler, board president Steve Risk, and former board president Dan Bender participated in their final board meeting on Nov. 18. Ressler, Risk and Bender each served on the board for 20 years. Solanco superintendent Brian Bliss noted that Ressler has provided representation of the agricultural community and has contributed local and global points of view. Ressler said he appreciates the board’s ability to work together cordially. Bliss said that Risk’s strong support for the community goes well beyond his service as a school board director; one example is Risk’s efforts on behalf of the Southern End
