York Halloween Parade

Everyone In York County,

Loves A

Parade

With floats, special vehicles, musical groups, and more, parades are a great way to celebrate holidays and other special occasions. York County hosts its share of these special processions throughout the year, celebrating everything from local heritage and agriculture to beloved holidays, along with more solemn processions held to remember those who served in America’s military. No matter the occasion, York County’s parades offer local residents and visitors the opportunity to get out into the community and celebrate together.

The York Saint Patrick's Day Parade is held annually on the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, except when March 17 falls on a Saturday, in which case the parade is held on the actual holiday. Attendees do not need to be Irish to appreciate the merriment. Organized by the York Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee, a notfor-profit volunteer organization, the annual celebration of Celtic heritage includes bands, Irish dance groups, floats, antique and decorated vehicles, clowns, individuals and family groups, organizations, and media entries.

[10]

The parade steps off from Market and Penn streets and proceeds east on Market to Duke Street. To add to the day’s fun, a variety of related festivities, including activities for children and live entertainment, are planned for before and after the parade. For more information on the York Saint Patrick's Day Parade, readers may visit www.york saintpatricksdayparade.org or www.facebook.com/YorkStPatParade. On Memorial Day, communities in York County remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States military. One annual commemoration of this hallowed day is Red Lion’s Memorial Day Parade and Service. The parade, which this year will be held on Monday, May 28, begins at the Red Lion Senior High School and concludes with a memorial service at Fairmount Park. Parade organizers welcome veterans and community organizations to participate in the parade and

service. Details on Red Lion’s Memorial Day commemoration can be found at www.redlionpa.org. Other communities in York County also hold parades to honor the nation’s fallen service members on Memorial Day. Hanover’s Memorial Day Parade begins near the library on Route 94 and processes to the Wirt Park Cemetery. Members of the community line the streets to watch as veterans groups, community service organizations, emergency services vehicles, marching bands, and more parade by. On the other side of the county, the East Prospect Memorial Day Parade will be held this year on Sunday, May 27, the day before Memorial Day. In addition to the parade, this year’s event will include a carnival and fireworks in Ball Park. Including its own special kind of parade is York Bike Night, an annual event presented by Harley-Davidson

Motor Co. and The City of York. During the festivities, countless motorcycles roar into downtown York for a street party held in and around Continental Square. The parade, which leaves from the York Expo Center, provides motorcyclists the opportunity to ride together and to show off their bikes

to spectators. All makes and models of motorcycles are welcome to participate in the parade, and preregistration is not necessary. Approximately 1,000 motorcycles are expected to take part in the 2018 event, which is slated for Saturday, Sept. 22. Additional information on York Bike Night is available at www.yorkcity.org.

Also getting into the Halloween spirit each year is Dover. The Union Fire and Hose Company No. 1 hosts the Dover Halloween Parade, which includes community groups, floats, antique and decorated vehicles, tractors, and - of course - lots of fun costumes. The year’s event is on the

calendar for Sunday, Oct. 7, and further details will be available at www.union fireandhose.com. Joining in the frightening fun each year is the Red Lion Halloween Parade. The 2018 event is slated for Monday, Oct. 29, and details will be posted at www.redlionpa.org.

A few weeks after the ghouls and goblins have their big day, the Hanover Holiday Parade will help to officially launch the holiday seaYork Halloween Parade son. Traditionally held on the day after Thanksgiving, the parade kicks off the most festive time of the year with antique cars, floats, walking units, bands, performing groups, and decorated bikes. And, most importantly, the parade also marks Santa’s official arrival in Hanover. Details on the 2018 parade, which is slated for Friday, Nov. 23, will be posted at www.hanoverpasanta cabin.com.

While holidays are popular reasons for parades, York Countians take their celebrations into the streets on other occasions too. Many towns’ annual fairs and carnivals include a parade as part of the festivities. Examples include the Stewartstown Firemen’s Parade, which takes place during the Stewartstown Carnival (slated for Monday, July 16, through Saturday, July 21, in 2018); The Fantastic Parade, which is part of the Dillsburg Farmers Fair (featuring 2018 dates of Monday, Oct. 15, through Saturday, Oct. 20); the Fireman’s Parade at the Mason Dixon Fair in Delta (set for Monday, July 9, through Saturday, July 14, in 2018); and the Fawn Grove Olde Tyme Days Parade, held on the Saturday of the annual festival

Hanover Holiday Parade (slated for Friday, July 6, through Sunday, July 8, in 2018). The aforementioned parades encompass only a sample of York County’s offerings. Whatever the season or the reason, there’s a parade to check out in York County. So grab a lawn chair, gather with other members of the community, and strike up the band – York County has plenty to celebrate!

A Beloved

Community

The York Fair, which traces its origins to 1765, remains one of York County’s favorite annual traditions. The event, which features familyfriendly attractions and entertainment, is held at the York Fairgrounds, 334 Carlisle Ave., York.

With rides, games, livestock competitions, agricultural and craft displays, a petting zoo and learning opportunities for children, and live performances by musical acts and other entertainers, the York Fair is brimming with

a a y

F S

Tradition

activity. The legendary fair food also brings out the crowds each year. 2018 Event Information: The York Fair will be held from Friday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 16. Headlining performances

on the schedule for 2018 include Alice Cooper, Gabriel “Fluffy Iglesias, MercyMe, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Old Dominion. For more information, readers may visit http://yorkfair.org/.

More York County

Traditions To Love… From innovative fundraisers to fun ways to celebrate a holiday, here are some annual events that York County residents and visitors will want to make sure to experience year after year.

York County Polar Plunge

For over a decade, York County residents and visitors have braved taking a dip into the frigid water of the Susquehanna River each winter in order to support the programs of the Special Olympics York County (SOYC). Held along the Susquehanna River in Wrightsville, festivities include a costume parade and contest. Adding to the levity of the event is the annual chicken dance, which is performed by all of the “chicken plungers” (people who support the plunge but do not plan to go into the water). When it’s time for the plunge itself, each wave of participants is led by SOYC athletes. Funds raised by the participating individuals and teams support SOYC, which provides training and competition opportunities free of charge to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More information is available at www.specialolympicsyorkcounty.org.

Bell’s Big Bed Race

Bell’s Big Bed Race, a fundraiser to benefit Bell Socialization Services, is held annually in downtown York. The event was originally launched in 2016 as Bell celebrated its 50th anniversary. Each year, the event offers oodles of high-energy fun. The bed races bring awareness to Bell programs that help people – sometimes marginalized because of disability, illness, or circumstance – have a safe place to sleep. Through Bell programs, homeless families find emergency shelter and transitional housing, people with intellectual disabilities receive 24/7 care in homes in neighborhoods throughout York and Adams counties, and individuals living with mental illness receive varying levels of support while staying in affordable apartments and houses. For Bell’s Big Bed Race, participants put together a team, assemble a bed (or at least something that resembles a bed), put wheels on it, decorate it, and race against other teams. Official rules and guidelines can be found at https://bellsocialization.com. The event also includes a parade of beds prior to the start of the race.

Olde York Street Fair

For more than 40 years, the annual Olde York Street Fair has been held in downtown York, in and around Continental Square. This Mother’s Day tradition is a free event that is open to everyone. Offering a perfect opportunity to spend time with Mom on her special day, the street fair’s festivities include arts and craft vendors, as well as food vendors offering festival food and other concoctions. A Kids Fun Block offers inflatables, games, and more, and multiple stages set up near Continental Square feature live entertainment in a variety of genres. More information is available at www.yorkcity.org/OldeYorkStreetFair.

Bridge Bust

Held on the first Saturday in October, Bridge Bust will mark 30 years of being a community tradition in 2018. During the annual fundraising event, the 1.25-mile Veterans Memorial Bridge between Columbia and Wrightsville is closed to traffic so visitors can shop from nearly 300 vendors and purchase food and beverages. Items for sale include collectibles, jewelry, yard decorations, pet treats, textiles, wood crafts, paper crafts, handmade soaps and candles, and more. Shoppers can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Susquehanna River, as well as the fall foliage along its banks. Further event details are posted at www.parivertowns.com.

Christmas Magic

For more than three decades, the York County Department of Parks and Recreation has sponsored Christmas Magic, "A Festival of Lights," at Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York. The light display powers up after Thanksgiving and runs through December. This memorable holiday tradition began in 1984 with a small budget that allowed for 10,000 lights and props, mostly produced by the Parks Department. Today, the props are produced commercially and in-house, and Christmas Magic encompasses a half-mile walking trail that meanders along a wooded hilltop through nearly 600,000 Christmas lights, various holiday scenes, and five enclosed, heated pavilions. The spirit of the holiday is conveyed by animation, displays, visits by Santa Claus, food, and a train display. Additional details about Christmas Magic are available at www.yorkcountyparks.org.

The Factory Whistle Concert

Perhaps one of York County’s most unique annual traditions is the Factory Whistle Concert performed a little after midnight on Christmas Day. The concert features Christmas carols performed on the variable-pitched whistle now installed at Think Loud Development, 240 Arch St., York. In 2017, Whistlemaster Don Ryan celebrated his 63rd anniversary of presenting the one-of-a-kind concert. The whistle can be heard within a 5-mile radius of the concert location, and, depending on the wind, reports indicate the whistle can be heard from as far away as 10 miles. For the past several years, the concert has been streamed live on the internet so that people from all over the globe can join in this unique celebration of Christmas. Organizers report that people from more than 50 countries checked out the live concert stream in 2017. Further details are available at www.facebook.com/YorkPAWhistle/.
