Studies have shown that having a pet affords an array of benefits for a pet owner. A person’s health and wellbeing can all be increased by having a furry, four-legged friend in his or her life. But some animals take their role of helping people far beyond that of a typical pet. York County is home to a number of organizations that utilize the diverse talents of these special animals to foster a safer, healthier, and happier community. The moniker “man’s best friend” is not hyperbole, as dogs are known for providing valuable assistance to humans in a number of ways. Humans have utilized dogs’ exceptional talents for searching and tracking for centuries, and dogs with these important skills are using them to help keep York County community safe. K-9 search teams are one of several assets employed by the South Central PA Search and Rescue Team to assist local emergency services and communities in locating lost or missing persons in a variety of situations. “We are a ‘support’ team that local fire, rescue, EMS, police water rescue, emergency managers, and other emergency agencies can call upon to assist in mitigating any incident involving a lost or missing person,” explained Kurtis Timmer, the chief and public information officer with the group. The York County-based team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help in situations where ground search crews, K-9 search teams, mountain bike search teams, water rescue teams, and community emergency response teams (CERT) are needed. The team typically responds to approximately 25 calls a year, helping in York County and

in seven other counties. “Once requested, the team will respond and operate as a support team under the incident commander for the incident at hand. We will assist in the overall event as a mutual aid agency,” noted Timmer. “Our team in dedicated to assisting those in their time of need.” The team also focuses on providing education and training to community groups. Another organization that uses the search and tracking skills of dogs is York County CARE (Child Abduction Response Effort) Team. According to Dana Ward, CARE Team coordinator, the group’s mission is “to establish a countywide child abduction response plan whose purpose is to create an interagency coordinated response to abducted, missing, and endangered

children in York County.” CARE Team members come from law enforcement, the FBI, the Department of Emergency Services, probation, parole, the U.S. Marshals, the County Sheriff's Office, Pennsylvania State Police, and the York County District Attorney's Office. One special member of the team is Detective Prince, a K-9 bloodhound search dog. Prince and his handler, Cpl. Scott Musselman, frequently attend community events to interact with members of the community and educate the public on the valuable service Prince provides, both as a member of the CARE Team and as a detective with West York Borough Police Department. Prince and the other members of the CARE Team also provide educational materials to families on child safety and awareness. In addition to being a pro at community outreach

and helping to find missing people, Prince is also savvy with social media and has his own Facebook page (www.facebook.com/det.prince/) and Instagram account (@det.prince). While Prince is a proud member of law enforcement, civilian canines are also working to better their communities. Service dogs are a well-known example of animals that provide important and life-saving assistance to human individuals. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability, and the ADA specifies that the tasks performed by the dog must be directly related to the person's disability. Organizations that supply trained dogs to individuals in York County with disabilities include Susquehanna Service Dogs and UDS Service Dogs. These focused and hard-working canines can help individuals to live more full and independent lives by assisting with daily tasks and alerting their owners to potential dangers. As the dogs are tasked with helping to ensure the health and safety of their owners, members of the public should not pet or interact with them, as to not distract them from their important duties. Pets that have not undergone the rigorous training required of a service animal can still make a positive impact on the community. An example of this in York County is KPETS, a network of registered volunteer teams where a person partners with his or her companion animal to provide comfort, encouragement, and rehabilitation through human/animal interactions. The animals that work through KPETS

Leg Up Farm occupational therapist Gabrielle Spangler works with client LJ. Therapeutic horsemanship is one of many therapy services offered at Leg Up Farm. are therapy dogs, not service dogs or emotional support dogs, so they are not specially trained and placed with a specific person to recognize medical conditions (like service dogs) or to provide therapeutic support to a specific patient with a disabling mental illness (like emotional support dogs). Rather, KPETS’ animal volunteers are companion pets that provide therapy to humans, and the KPETS volunteer teams visit only where they have been invited. York County boasts many KPETS teams, which may be found visiting in health-related facilities, social agencies, special needs programs,

schools, libraries, retirement communities, hospices, and other locations where a friendly - and furry - face can provide joy and comfort. Other initiatives that rely on the positive impact of visits from affable pups are York County Libraries’ Sit, Stay, Read and Tales for Tails programs, in which young readers can practice reading aloud to a nonjudgmental audience composed of a friendly dog and its handler. The pups help to bolster confidence and a love of reading in their young pals. Dogs are well known for providing assistance to humans, whether as search-and-rescue professionals or as service animals or therapy dogs, but canines are not the only animals providing valuable contributions to the York County community. Spending time with horses can provide therapeutic benefits to a variety of individuals, and EquiTeam Support Services and Leg Up Farm are two York County organizations that are tapping into this horse-powered resource. “EquiTeam changes lives with equine-assisted therapy,” stated Ellie Williams, the organization’s executive director. Located in Dallastown, EquiTeam provides therapeutic services intended to improve the psychological and emotional health and well-being of individuals, families, and groups. “Using horses as teacher-guides, our certified professionals interact with clients of all ages to foster selfmotivation, communication, and selfexpression that is helpful for working through complex emotions, trauma, and abuse,” Williams explained.

The organization offers its services to a variety of people. EquiTeam provides equine therapy to at-risk youths and families in need, with a specialization in trauma and attachment, and it is also expanding its work with military personnel through a joint program of equine therapeutic intervention and neurofeedback services. “We love what we do here and want to share this with anyone who can benefit from the amazing services we offer,” added Williams. Also employing equine therapy to serve its clients is Leg Up Farm, a nonprofit pediatric therapy center in Mount Wolf that works with clients from birth through age 21 who are impacted by a special health care need. “At Leg Up Farm, we believe every child is special and deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, interact, and realize his or her full potential,” noted Crystal Kimball, director of communications and special events. “Our individually tailored treatment plans and child-friendly engaging environment (are) vital in helping our clients reach their therapy goals.” In addition to providing clients the opportunity to engage in therapeutic horsemanship, Leg Up Farm offers a multitude of other services, including physical, occupational, speech, and aquatic therapy; counseling services; educational and recreational programming; and nutritional services. Leg Up Farm, which opened in 2010, and Able-Services, a program the Leg Up Farm Family opened in 2014 for young adults and adults with special needs, have impacted the lives of more than 2,700 children, teenagers, and adults with

[14]

special needs. In various ways and through various programs, four-legged friends are working to help their human counterparts to make the York County community a better place to live every day.
