Mark Johnston with several cairns, rock piles that he thinks of as symbolic of life-altering experiences
Following God’s trail
M
atthew 7:7 tells us, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” It’s an important message that sometimes bears repeating. Lititz resident Mark Johnston has written a book that focuses on the importance of seeking God. It’s titled “17 Cairns: Encounters and Reflections From a Lifetime of Following God’s Trail.” “Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve had this desire to know God,” said Johnston, a semi-retired physician. “The seeking, which continues, has brought me to where I am today. God reveals Himself to those who seek Him.
He remains obscure to those who do not. God wants to have a relationship with us. He wants to have an intimate relationship with us. “Whatever spirituality I have has come from the seeking,” added Johnston. “God will reveal Himself to you to the degree you seek Him.” A cairn is a pile of rocks, and its uses include helping hikers navigate unfamiliar terrain. The spiritual interpretation of cairns refers to the moments in our lives when God reveals Himself to us through special life occurrences. Johnston contends that life is filled with cairns, but he has identified 17 in his own life that have been profound or direction-altering. He said that
all of us have experienced spiritual cairns, but some of them go unrecognized. “We all have cairns in our lives, and sometimes when you read about other people’s cairns you can see the ones in your life,” said Johnston. “It’s like what I’ve been called to do. It’s like good news in another way. It’s just another perspective on a truth that’s been with us all along. If you recognize a cairn in your life, share it. There’s something enriching about examining our lives.” Among the cairns Johnston explores in his book are a son’s bout with cancer, the death of his father, his invention of a medical device used to treat conditions of the esophagus and dreams See “17 Cairns” pg 4

Hope Inspire Love now has headquarters to fight human trafficking BY JEFF FALK
It’s about the organization. It’s about the mission. It’s about the people. It’s not about bricks and mortar. But a building provides the structure that can bring everything together. Hope Inspire Love has a new home. It’s a space that the local human-trafficking opposer can call its own.
“This is for us to provide more services,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire Love’s president and CEO. “We want to grow our programs. This is just how we’ve evolved in the community. Now our name is on the side of a building. People will walk by and say, ‘What’s Hope Inspire Love about?’ Having a brick-and-mortar building will cause people to want to get involved, to get behind it. This See Hope Inspire Love pg 3

The petting zoo around back - which included goats, rabbits, chickens, peacocks, turkeys, ducks and geese only enhanced the family atmosphere.
“It used to be a lot of older locals who were our customers,” said Rabold. “Now it’s younger families, but the locals still come. Morton decided to feature Zimmerman’s wood sculptures because of his longtime admiration of Zimmerman’s ingenuity and skill. Although Zimmerman has the background of a skilled woodworker and carpenter, he has found his niche in creating sculptures. His small wood shop is located on a farm just outside of Terre Hill. is the launch pad to make it happen.” On Dec. 13, 2023, Hope Inspire L ove hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at its new digs at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The event was attended by about 100 community members, clergy, volunteers, board members and individuals whose lives have been directly or indirectly affected by human trafficking. “ The atmosphere was wonderful, because it was beautiful people coming together to support one cause,” said T hurston. “There was a certain energy there. We’re not a home. We’re a place where people can come and get services. It was really neat because people were asking how they could get involved.” B e fore s e tt ling into the 1,100 square feet at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Hope Inspire Love had no real office space. Most of its face-to-face work was being performed at coffee shops or libraries or
churches. “After COVID-19, we went remote,” said Thurston. “We have not had a permanent home since 2020. It was very tough. It kept costs low, but we were seeing that people didn’t know how to find us, and we couldn’t help them.” “Having an actual location where people can come to, it’s just so great,” added Thurston. “We want to have a safe place where our community can come and heal. We’ve already had people come in and say, ‘I’ve been looking for you.’” The move to 1380 Harrisburg Pike culminated a nearly two-year search for Hope Inspire Love. Some of the $65,000 raised at the organization’s inaugural Hope for Freedom gala in June of 2023 was used to fund the relocation and to purchase furnishings. “After COVID, we paused and asked ourselves, ‘Is this what we really want to do?’” said Thurston. “We wanted to be right outside the city. We wanted anyone to be able to walk through our
door. We wanted to have a space with great lighting, parking spots, and there’s a bus stop right outside our door. It has an open floor plan, and the intake office in the back can be utilized for connecting in the future.” Hop e Inspire L ove ’s new office space also represents a milestone in the organization’s process of progress. “At the beginning, we were so focused on education,” said Thurston of the organization, which was founded in 2017. “We probably thought about the office originally 10 years ago. I never thought it would happen in year six. But we can’t do this alone. What’s blown us away is that we now have three fulltime staff members and over 50 volunteers. We are so grateful and so thankful for a great community.” For additional information on Hope Inspire Love, go to www.hopeinspire love.org.
