Serviceis a blessed opportunity.
But to some people, being able to help kids makes service even more special.
That’s what the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area stands f or; that’s what it’s really all about.
The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area seeks to serve the local community and its surrounding areas through directly and indirectly supporting the development of children. But in another way, it’s a group of maturing citizens who have always served, passing on their legacy to the next generation.
“ We’re looking to help the children of the world, one community at a time,” said Charles Stickler, the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area’s vice president. “Our focus is to help children any way we can, and literacy is a big piece of that. We’re an organization of people who look to help the children of the community. Our people work together well;
The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area gives away thousands of books each year, and the organization raises funds for local organizations like the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development and the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. The club also sponsors local scholastic service groups: Key Club, Builders Club, Circle K and Aktion Club.
To fund its altruistic efforts, Lititz’s Kiwanis Club conducts four major fundraisers each year - a wine, cheese and chocolate tasting party in February; the Lititz Pretzel Fest in May; a kids’ day in the park in May; and the Lititz Chocolate Walk in October.
“God’s been good to me,” said Stickler. “The best way to give back is to give back to God’s people. Our kids are our future. I like meeting people. I like helping people. I think f or most of our members, they share that same common theme.”
Each year, members of Kiwanis
International perform an average of 150,000 service projects and raise a total of $100 million worldwide. Locally, Kiwanis International also sponsors clubs in Lancaster, New Holland, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Lebanon and Reading.
“ We’re teachers, engineers and truck drivers,” said Stickler. “We’re a group of citizens who want to be able to help our community. Agewise, we’re a mixed group. It’s just an interesting group of nice people who are dedicated.”
The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area was formed from the remnants

of the now-disbanded Kiwanis Club of North Lancaster, whose origins can be traced to the mid-1950s. Formally established on Sept. 14, 1994, the current Kiwanis Club in Lititz initially featured a roster of 40 members, a number that has dwindled to 22 recently.
“Over the years, people have moved away or passed away,” said Stickler. “Our club is getting older. ... To me, the key to our future is getting more young people involved.”

Scholarship
offered to future EMTs and paramedics
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Michael P. McMahon was a true Renaissance man. A 1993 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School, he was a registered nurse, a flight attendant and a school bus driver. Each job offered Michael a chance to help people, something he truly believed in. Although he gave his all to everything he did, he was most passionate about his work as an emergency medical technician (EMT). When Michael passed away from colon cancer in October 2021, his family turned its grief into an opportunity to help others. The Michael P. McMahon
Scholarship for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was created to help any resident of Lancaster County who wishes to pursue an EMT, Advanced EMT or Paramedic Certification.
Michael was the oldest of four children and the son of Mike and Joanne McMahon. “He was loving, and he was loved by his family and friends,” Mike stated.
Added Joanne, “Michael’s life was so varied. You couldn’t put him in a box. If he was interested in something, he’d do it. … They say it’s the dash between the years on your gravestone that matters. Michael made the most of that dash.”

Joanne noted that her freespirited son loved to try new things, but one career path made all the difference.
“Being an EMT and eventually a paramedic changed his life,” she shared. “He grew as a person. It made him who he was.”
When Joanne sat down to write Michael’s obituary, and she got to the part about giving flowers, she had another idea. “She said, ‘Let’s start a scholarship in his name,’” recalled Mike, noting that they asked family members and friends to contribute.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated
ity and need.” It will cover tuition up to $7,500.
To help develop the scholarship, the McMahon family reached out to the Lancaster County EMS Council, a nonprofit organization made up of representatives from all of the EMS agencies serving Lancaster County. The initial scholarship was open to students and alumni at Lancaster Catholic High School, but a second round is being offered countywide.
“Our goal is to find as many people to help as we can,” said Joe McMahon, Michael’s brother. “We want to pay for as many as we can and give people the opportunity to do this as a career, to help people to do something every day that they can be proud of.”
Noted Mike, “This is a full scholarship, based on capabil-
The scholarship is open to both current students and adults. “Michael was kind of a late bloomer, so the ideal candidate could be someone who has stayed home with their kids and now wants to get back into the workforce,” said Michael’s sister Mary Kate Walsh. “Or it could be someone who wants to change careers and needs financial support to do that.”
The scholarship is meant to
be a stepping stone into a career that helps people, said Michael’s sister Colleen Murphy, who added, “We need more helpers in the world like my brother.”
The application process for the scholarship will run from Saturday, April 1,
through Friday, June 30. Scholarship winners will be notified by Monday, July 31. For more information, to obtain a scholarship application or to make a donation to the scholarship fund, contact Joe McMahon at joe@joemcmahonlaw.com.

Come out to Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, May 6, and you can enjoy an allyou-can-eat breakfast that supports the church’s Mission Outreach Team. A strawberry and waffle breakfast will be served from 6 to 10 a.m., or until sold out, in the fellowship hall of the church. “The star is our strawberry waffles,” noted Gail Ruhl, who
heads the Mission Outreach Team with her husband, Chuck. “We normally get our strawberries from North Carolina, where they are fresh in season right now. We are also going to have pancakes, scrambled eggs as well as eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and beverages.”
Proceeds from the meal will benefit a mission trip church members will take in June. “We’re actually venturing into a new area we’ve never gone before,” Gail said. “We are going to be going to Vermont, near the capital, Montpelier.
We’re going to be working alongside Central Vermont Mission.” Gail said the mission team members were searching for mission ideas when they came upon this one, and it seemed like a good fit. She noted that Central Vermont Mission has been working in the area since 2011, when it formed right after the region was hit by Tropical Storm Irene. “This is ongoing even from then, and I think that might surprise a lot of people,” Gail remarked. “When we say we’re going to volunteer in that area, they may think, ‘What has happened there recently?’ but it takes years and years to recover from disasters. At the beginning of a disaster, there are a lot of volunteers and a lot of money, and then that all dries up, but the need is still there.”
The group will be serving low-income families and the elderly, helping with construction or remodeling
and maintenance work. New this year, they are also going to be helping to feed the homeless in the area by preparing lunch and distributing it to them.
As for the breakfast, no reservations are required, but Gail recommends coming early because items sell out.
“People can expect some really good food, and it’s just a really great place to come even if you’re by yourself or you’re a couple or you have a few friends that you get together,” she commented.
“It’s a great environment just to sit and socialize, and it’s also a good opportunity if you’ve never been to the church to ask some of us questions about our church or look around. Or, if you’re interested in mission work, even though our group is mainly people from our church, we’re certainly not against others joining us, so we are willing to share our experiences with people and invite them along or even to come to church if they feel like it.”
There is a cost for the breakfast, with separate prices for adults and children ages 4 to 10. There is no charge for children age 3 and under. For more information, visit http://ruhlschurch.org or call the church office at 717665-3400.

Cruising with confidence
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
What are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.
The organization kicked off its ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos
Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.
“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equipment, helmets, everything.”
Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special
challenge rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.
In addition to the challenge rides and the weeknight rides, teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County. “These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said. “They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”
He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up with us,’” he shared. “They haven’t missed anything by missing the first
few weeks.”
Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.
“After nine years of doing this, it’s really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”

American pastime. That’s when the “Stormers” will host Lititz Community Night at its home ballpark, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
“It’s going to be a great night of baseball,” said Elijah Yearick, Lititz Borough’s managing director of planning and development. “Hopefully, it will be a lot of fun and a way f or the community to come together and celebrate. It’s a way to recognize the community and our shared culture.”
“In Lititz, there’s a history of people coming together and doing what’s best for the community,” continued Yearick. “Lititz has improved
its downtown a lot. Local residents put their money where their hearts are. And there’s not just one thing that makes Lititz, Lititz.”
On Lititz Community Night, the Barnstormers will be hosting the Lexington Counter Clocks in a 6:30 p.m. Atlantic League contest. Through the efforts of Venture Lititz, the ballpark’s concourse will be decorated to depict Lititz’s Main Street, complete with locally themed props and vendor tables.
A fireworks display will fill the night sky after the game.
“The way the idea was pitched to us was ‘You can do
as much or as little as you like,’” said Yearick. “Venture Lititz has really taken the lead, and I trust that it’ll be a really cool night. Venture Lititz is trying to make it iconic.”
As part of a promotional plan to highlight Lancaster County communities, the Barnstormers approached Lititz Borough Council and Venture Lititz about the possibility of hosting a Lititz Community Night. Yearick said that the Barnstormers have hosted a similar Lititz night in the past, but not recently.

Lancaster Country Day probes boundaries of conventional
BY JEFF FALK
The importance of education can’t be overstated.
We all learn in our own time, in our own way, in our own space. That’s what makes options and alternatives necessary.
Cue Lancaster Country Day School. Situated at 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster, Lancaster Country Day is an independent, prekindergarten through 12th-grade, postsecondary preparatory school that’s an alternative to public education.
“We’re here to nurture and grow the minds and spirits of the students in our care,” said Matt Micciche, who’s in his first year as Lancaster Country Day’s head of school. “We want them to be able to go on to college and their careers. We want to make them people who are deeply engaged in their community. We think deeply about what your place in the world should be. But we also want our school to be a place of joy where people can come to feel safe and happy.”
Overseen by a board of trustees, Lancaster Country Day is more closely aligned to the concept of the one-
time “boarding school” than it is to a faith-based institution. Broken down into an upper school, a middle school and a lower school, Lancaster Country Day offers all the fundamentals and extracurricular activities of a traditional education in an intimate setting.
“The role of education is something we should be asking ourselves about all the time,” said Micciche. “We exist to perpetuate good in the world. It’s also about creating individuals who see their role in the world as helping others and being a benefit to their communities. It’s preparing students for the work world they’ll live in.”
Currently, 623 students in preschool through 12th grade are enrolled at Lancaster Country Day, 200 to 225 of whom make up the upper school - grades nine through 12 - population.
Lancaster Country Day’s students are predominantly residents of Lancaster County, but they also hail from Dauphin, Berks, York and Lebanon counties.
Lancaster Country Day employs about 100 staff members, 60 to 70 of whom
are teachers.
“When you have 12, 13, 14 kids in your classroom, you’re able to challenge each student on an individual level,” said Micciche. “Our kids talk about their relationships with their teachers. Just about every teacher knows every student by face and name. One of the things I really value here is the depth and the breadth of the personal relationships. It allows students to feel safe and a connection to each other.”
The origin of Lancaster Country Day School can be traced to 1908 and the allgirls’ Shippen School. The school changed its charter and name in the early 1940s after including male students from the nearby Franklin and Marshall Academy for Boys, which shuttered its doors.
In 1949, Lancaster Country Day moved to its current location on 29 acres of suburban Manheim Township soil.
“I don’t think we’re as well-known as I’d like us to be,” said Micciche. “I think our children are incredibly well-served here. As the world has become a more diverse and challenging
place, I think our approach has changed. Any good school is evolving to reflect the world it lives in.” For additional information about Lancaster Country Day, go to www.lancaster countryday.org.

Jazz concerts to feature woman composers
Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz, will host a series of five concerts this spring and fall to celebrate and showcase young women from the region who compose and perform their own brands of jazz. The “5 Fresh Takes on Jazz: Emerging Women Composers in Concert” events began on April 16 and will continue on Sundays, May 7, June 11, Sept. 24 and Oct. 22. The concerts will begin at 3 p.m. except for the May event, which will start at 3:30 p.m. The concerts will be followed by “Meet the Composer”

Ages 25 to 33, the composersGosia Julia Maj, Tammy Huynh, Gina Benalcazar, Lora Sherrodd and Laura Lizcano - perform in their bands as singers and instrumentalists. All five

St. James Catholic Church to host exhibit
St. James Catholic Church, 505 Woodcrest Ave., Lititz, will host a “Marian Apparitions and Shrines” exhibit from Wednesday, May 3, through Monday, May 8. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Freewill offerings will be accepted.
The exhibit presents Vatican-approved Marian apparitions and shrines from all over the world as compiled by Blessed Carlo Acutis. Acutis dedicated his short life to connecting people to Jesus and His mother, Mary, through creating websites. Besides the Marian apparitions and shrines, Acutis created an exhibit for Eucharistic miracles, which was showcased at St. James in October of 2021. Acutis, who was Italian, was born on May 3, 1991, and died on Oct. 12, 2006.
The exhibit will be open on the following dates and times: May 3, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 7, from noon to 7 p.m;. and May 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call the parish office at 717-6265580, ext 243.
