Oh, the stories The Checkerboard House could tell

It’s a grand old structure with a fascinating history and engaging back story.

Situated on Route 322 about a half mile east of Brickerville, The Checkerboard House is probably one of the most unusual buildings in Lancaster County. Constructed in 1754, the aesthetically appealing, Georgian-style house has outlasted 11 owners, although each has left behind specific elements that have helped shape the current building.

On land leased from William and Thomas Penn, Valentine Stoner built what would later become known as The Checkerboard House over a period of eight years in the 1750s. Over the next 270 years, The Checkerboard House served as a great many things to a great many people, including a residence and a tavern.

At one point, the building was one of the few inns on Route 322, then a popular throughway between Philadelphia and Harrisburg.

To build hope

On April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the

founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.

First dubbed the Spotted House because of its unique masonry pattern of alternating dark and light stones on the exterior, the 3,800-square-foot structure forever became The Checkerboard House in the 1800s. But as curious as The Checkerboard House appears from the outside, its interior is even more beautiful.

In 1997, The Checkerboard House was purchased by the Miller family and opened for public viewing and as a venue for selling gifts, crafts and flowers. The current owner, who chose not to be identified for this article, purchased the property in 2014.

Although he has not opened the house to the public, the current owner has painstakingly appointed each of the three-story Checkerboard House’s 12 rooms with antique furnishings and accessories in an attempt to keep it true to its place in local history.

“Its history is important to me,” said the current owner. “I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of finding furniture and antiques (for) each room.”

Brian Roche is a battle-tested warrior in fight against fraud

Scam artists want to take what you’ve got. Brian Roche wants you to keep what you rightfully earned.

Roche is a full-time consumer investigator for local television station WGAL-8. Personable, knowledgeable and genuine, Roche has made a career out of helping viewers and listeners avoid the seemingly unrelenting onslaught of hoaxes and scams.

“What I want (the consumer) to learn is how to spot the scams,” said Roche. “Money is the root of it. What

I’ve learned over my career is that two things motivate people: power and money. In this case, it’s money.”

On April 24, the Manheim Township resident brought his message of awareness to Lititz.

Roche addressed an audience of older local residents at the Lititz Senior Center, 201 E. Market St., Lititz, about how to identify and combat the current wave of fraud being perpetrated through phone calls, text messages and emails. The hourlong address included a question-and-answer period, as well as slideshow presentation.

Brian Roche addresses a gathering at Lititz Senior Center.

Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.

Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.

John J. Herman, chief executive officer with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collaborative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility keeps state-of-the-art care here in Lancaster.”

County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.

Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”

Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”

The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God)

provided the resources.”

Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.

“It has such a historical significance,” the current owner noted. “Here is a very unique house that has stood the test of time, and it has not been modernized. When you walk in, it’s like you walk back in time. I think there’s a genuine interest in early homes and what they looked like.”

The Checkerboard House features a 19th-century kitchen, bedrooms, a sewing room, two parlors and a relaxing or entertainment room.

Double front doors open into a hall, and the house includes an oak stairway banister, hardwood floors throughout and deep windowsills.

“I’ve always been into history,” added the current owner. “In the past, I had bought a house or two and restored them, but none as old as this. At one point, I decided I needed a retirement project and that I was going to restore the interior. It was a project and I loved doing it.”

In addition to his consumer protection work on WGAL, Roche makes about five or six presentations to similar community groups across Lancaster County each month.

“Seniors have time; they’re home and near the phone,” said Roche, who’s been employed at WGAL for 22 years, 20 of which have been dedicated to his current role. “Seniors are susceptible to it because they don’t understand the technology. We grew up in a generation that was trusting. Our parents taught us to be nice, to give people the benefit of the doubt. Scammers take advantage of that trust.”

According to the spamblocker app RoboKiller, 78 billion spoofed - faked or hoaxed - phone calls were made in the United States in 2022 alone. But last year was also the first time that scam texts outnumbered the sham phone calls.

Those scam artists prey on emotions. Among common scams Roche listed “Must act now,” “Your relative left you money,” “Mystery shopper,”

“You won the lottery,” “We have detected a problem with your computer” and scams related to rentals. Scammers may also pose as representatives of the Social Security Administration or the IRS. He said that the scammers’ preferred methods for extorting money are store gift cards and digital currency like bitcoin.

“Don’t take it personally, because that scammer has no idea who you are or, most of the time where you are,” said Roche. “It’s just like going fishing. They cast their nets into the ocean, and they’ve got a lot of bait.”

Roche, who hails from a family heavily involved in law enforcement, said he did not go looking to be “the scam guy or the fraud guy, but obviously the need is there.”

“I’m happy to do it,” said Roche. “I’m happy to take the message to the people, and I take it personally. I get very angry when I hear about some of these scams. I think information is my weapon; it’s what I dispense to people.”

On World Labyrinth Day, people will engage in individual walks, local community celebrations and worldwide connections through online events and social media. Some participants will take part in the “Walk as One at 1” activity by walking a labyrinth at 1 p.m. local time to create a continuous event passing from one time zone to the next around the globe.

Labyrinth walkers may also choose to participate in the third annual Big Connection research project, a global humanity research experiment asking the question, “What is the impact of walking labyrinths collectively with heart-centered intention and the impact that it has for ourselves and our planet?” This year, the researchers are further exploring the process of labyrinth activism - a term that emerged from the prior studies in 2021 and 2022 - and how to initiate it. For information on how to participate, visit

www.worldlabyrinthday.org or www.legacylabyrinthproject.org.

The first World Labyrinth Day was celebrated in 2009. The Labyrinth Society Global Group on Facebook, created in tandem with World Labyrinth Day, has since grown to over 15,000 members from 100 countries.

The Labyrinth Society is a

tured speaker Paul Miller. The offering brought in $1,446, which was donated to Warwick Released Time.

U.S.-based international nonprofit organization founded in 1998 whose mission is to support all those who create, maintain, and use labyrinths and to serve the global community by providing education, networking, and opportunities to experience transformation. An in-person session will be available at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster. Virtual sessions will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, and at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17. The meetings will be 90 minutes in length.

The information sessions are designed for families that want to learn more about foster care and adoption through foster care. During each program, families will receive an introduction to the roles, expectations, and approval process for COBYS resource families.

The sessions are free and place no obligation on attendees. Child care will not be provided. For more information or to reserve a space or receive the recorded portion of the program, contact a COBYS resource home coordinator at 717-6566580 or careforkids@cobys.org.
