AMBUCS Crafts in the Park to focus on beauty of helping others
BY JEFF FALK
People who are good with their hands utilizing them to help others who experience difficulties with mobility.
While there’s a lot more to it, that’s basically what AMBUCS Crafts in the Park really boils down to.
This year’s version of AMBUCS Crafts in the Park will go off on Saturday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The organizer of the event, AMBUCS, or the American Business Clubs, is a nonprofit member organization “dedicated to aiding people with disabilities.”
“AMBUCS is carrying on this tradition,” said Frank Kenavan, who’s served as the chairman for the last 20 AMBUCS Crafts in the Park events. “It allows us to do the things we need to do. But it’s also about visibility, so people know who we are. We’re usually known
as one of the best-kept secrets in the nonprofit community.”
The event is expecting 30 to 50 vendors, craftspeople and artists from Lancaster County, surrounding counties and as far away as Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey.
Lasagna Love delivers kindness
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need.
Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.
“We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families,
spread kindness and strengthen communities.”
Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.
“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a

Kenavan referred to the wares that will be offered that day as “a nice mix of handcrafted materials,” which will include jewelry, stained glass and metal workings.
Of course, Lititz Springs Park will serve as a welcoming venue for
AMBUCS Crafts in the Park.
“Some of the craftsmen have been doing it for the last 30 years because they like coming to Lititz,” said Kenavan. “It’s always been a smaller craft show that has appeal. It moves at a slower pace,
and that allows visitors to enjoy the surroundings. It’s very laid back. It’s a leisurely stroll in the park.”

Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series to quench local thirst for music
BY JEFF FALK
Half a century of entertaining the community. Five decades of supporting local musicians. Fifty years of lemonade.
The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series is celebrating its 50th anniversary, with the same style and grace that has become its calling card. This summer season’s performances, by bands and artists with a distinct Lancaster County flavor, will be presented every Thursday at 7 p.m. between June 8 and Aug. 3 at Highland Presbyterian Church,
500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. There will not be a concert on July 6.
“We have people tell us how much
they like our concerts,” said Sharon Neal, secretary of the Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series board of See Lemonade Concerts pg 8

moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”

Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.
Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals. Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another
lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.
Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”
Linden Hall plans community yard sale
The third annual Linden Hall community yard sale will take place from 6 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 10, and Sunday, June 11. The event will be held at Linden Hall, 212 E. Main St., Lititz.
Visitors will be able to browse outdoor tables for items from multiple vendors. Donations will be accepted. Concessions will be available at the event.
Spaces are available to rent. Reservations are required by Friday, June 2. To reserve a spot, visit http://bit.ly/LHYardSale2023. For details or to donate, contact info @lindenhall.org or 717-626-8512.
to ok over from the Lititz Rotary Club in the early 1990s. In the past, AMBUCS Crafts in the Park has drawn crowds of up to 4,000 visitors.
“We want to see more people go through,” said Kenavan. “Our money is made in advance when the vendors rent the space. We hope we get a lot of people for the sake of the vendors. There have been a lot of changes over the years, but how we run it has remained the same.”
All monies raised at Crafts in the Park will go toward the Lititz chapter of AMBUCS and its mission to inspire independence and mobility.
“It goes into the club’s coffers,
and they can use it as they see fit,” said Kenavan. “It’s like a general fund.”
A national organization that boasts more than 5,000 members and 157 chapters, AMBUCS operates in 36 states. AMBUCS works in cooperation with speech, physical and occupational therapists, and it provides scholarships for therapists and Amtrykes, or adaptive trykes, to others in need, and it performs various types of community service.
“We’re dedicated to helping people achieve the most that they can through independence and mobility,” said Kenavan.

Church to host rehearsals for choir festival
St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host regional rehearsals for the Ocean Grove Choir Festival. A chorus including hundreds of singers will gather in the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J., on Sunday, July 9, for the 69th annual Ocean Grove Choir Festival. This service of praise to God features a variety of choral anthems conducted by guest conductors in an auditorium that seats 6,000 and features a Hope-Jones pipe organ. Congregational hymn singing, music from brass and organ, and choral masterworks are included in the festival. The large chorus is made up of singers from all over the East Coast, as well as those who come from across the country to participate. Anyone is welcome to
sing, regardless of church affiliation. Rehearsals for the festival will be led by Tom and Deborah Berdos, music director and organist at St. Peter’s. Singers from Lancaster County are invited to gather in the St. Peter’s sanctuary for rehearsals from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 7, 14, 21, and 28, and Monday, July 3. All singers need to attend the dress rehearsal in Ocean Grove, which will occur from 2 to 5 p.m. on July 9, just before the choir festival that evening. Woods and Friends on July 27; and Lancaster British Brass Band on Aug. 3. “They’re known groups, and some of the bands have a following. But we try to appeal to everyone,” Neal said. The concerts will cover the musical genres of classical, jazz, Broadway, contemporary, patriotic and rock ‘n’ roll.
“Our main goal is to promote musicians and pay them well,” said Neal. “Everyone is pretty much from Lancaster County, and we have so much musical talent here.”
The 90-minute, family-friendly concerts produce a lively evening of entertainment. Typically, the performances draw audiences of 300 to 600 residents.
“Music lifts the spirit and gives the audience joy,” said Neal. “I enjoy singing, and when I do, music flows through my mind. It’s kind of a respite from the rest of the world.”
The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series was born from the work and efforts of the Lancaster Opera Workshop Auxiliary.
The initial concert was staged in 1972, and through the years, the series has stayed true to its tradition of promoting local musicians and singers across every genre on a pay-as-you-will basis.
