Lititz Rotary has crafty way to serve community

Rows and rows of vendor tables stretching as far as the eye can see. Thousands of handmade items and pieces. If variety and selection are important, then bigger is better.

The annual Lititz Rotary Club Craft Show is billed as one of the biggest of its kind on the East Coast. It’s a claim to fame that benefits both show attendees and the borough of Lititz alike.

“It’s one of the largest craft shows anywhere,” said Tom Oehme, president of the Lititz Rotary Club and the show’s chairperson. “There’s such a wide variety of items there. If someone is looking for a specific item, they should be able to find it there.”

This year’s Lititz Rotary Club Craft Show will be presented from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12. The downtown business district will be barricaded, and the streets will come alive with unique handcrafted wares, food and up to 50,000 visitors.

About 525 artists will staff nearly

700 individual spaces spread across a 10-block area on East Main Street, on Broad Street and into Lititz Springs Park. Admission to the event is free.

“I think for the most part people enjoy (the show) and they like that the money raised goes back to the community,” said Oehme.

Sertoma Club offers devices to aid hearing-impaired people

Listening to a presentation from Roger Spitz of the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club a few months ago, Manheim Sertoma Club member Wendy Wood was inspired to act.

Spitz demonstrated the HLAC151 Bedside Fire Alarm and Clock bed shaker, created by Lifetone Technology to wake a person who might sleep through a fire.

“I got goosebumps listening to his presentation,” Wood recalled,

noting that her 75-year-old father had recently slept through an alarm that went off at his house. “He wears hearing aids, and people don’t sleep with their hearing aids, so you might not realize who would miss an alarm because they couldn’t hear it,” she said. Her father was unhurt, but the incident prompted Wood to find out more about the devices.

“When I joined the Sertoma Club, I knew I wanted to do something for the community,” said Wood, See Sertoma pg 5

metalwork, pottery, jewelry, children’s clothing, knitted sweaters,

quilts, photography, various artworks, kitchen items, aprons, hats, wreaths, brooms, candles and dolls.

The craft show is the only annual fundraiser currently being conducted by the Lititz Rotary Club. Oehme said that the proceeds from the craft show will be presented by the club to local service agencies like local volunteer fire and ambulance crews.

“The purpose of the craft show is to raise money for the community,” said Oehme. “After expenses, the profits are donated to the community. Plus, some of our food vendors are nonprofits.”

Dating back to 1979, the Lititz Rotary Club Craft Show has enjoyed a long history of serving the community.

“A local attorney who was a member of the Rotary Club came up with the idea of doing a craft show,” said Oehme. “He passed away not long after, and we decided to keep it going. It started on Main Street, then expanded to Broad Street, and right now it’s big enough to fill up half the park. It’ll continue to grow, because we don’t seem to have any problems getting crafters to come.”

An offshoot of Rotary International, the Lititz chapter was founded in 1925 with 35 original members.

There’s always something fresh going on with GOTR

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is always active, always evolving, always moving forward.

A national initiative designed to support the development of girls in the third through eighth grades with physical activities like running, GOTR has a mission that is seasonal in nature. On the heels of a successful spring campaign, the Lancaster chapter of GOTR is currently gearing up for its 10-week fall season, which will get underway on Monday, Sept. 11.

The size of the crowds attracted by the Lititz Rotary Club Craft Show rivals the number of available items.

In addition, Girls on the Run recently assigned new positions and responsibilities to employees Jennifer West and Kylie Homan.

“While Girls on the Run has two seasons, it is a yearround effort to ensure the success of each season,” said West, GOTR’s new executive director. “As a staff, it’s our responsibility to set up our coaches for success. Then it all starts again. We’re always thinking of how we can engage the community more. We know how important it is for girls to have a safe place to land.”

Registration for GOTR’s fall campaign will run from Thursday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Sept. 15. The season will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 19, with GOTR’s inclusive and celebratory 5K run at Millersville University.

“My job is to ensure our program is up and running so we can serve as many girls in the county as possible,” said Homan, GOTR’s new program director. “It’s about establishing our coaches so they can facilitate the program. Running is a component of our program, not a requirement. In each of the lessons, there are physical activity or games. We are encouraging girls to keep moving, based on the ability they bring each day.”

GOTR officials hope to make their program available through every school district in Lancaster County, an initiative that will depend upon the availability of volunteer coaches. There is a cost associated with the program, and financial aid is available.

In the spring, GOTR involved 900 Lancaster County girls, thanks in part to the time and effort committed by 380 volunteer coaches.

“Because they’re all volunteer coaches, it’s almost like starting fresh each season,” said West. “We rely on coaches coming back to coach the girls. We’re looking for positive role models to show kindness and compassion to the girls.”

“We are really focusing on reaching out to the community for coaches of all shapes, sizes and ethnicity,” added West. “It’s really

Venture Lititz earns honor, launches app

Pennsylvania Downtown Center (PDC) recently presented 14 awards during the organization’s annual statewide Townie Awards gala. The Townie Awards are designed to recognize the commonwealth’s core communities and individuals for creation and implementation of projects, programs and events that exemplify the goals of PDC’s community revitalization mission. Eligible communities are those where any of PDC’s nearly 200

member organizations are located.

Venture Lititz, downtown Lititz’s nationally accredited Main Street America program, was recognized for its internal work, earning a Townie in the General Image & Identity category for “Committing to Core Values.” The registered nonprofit - whose projects include the LititzPA.com website, Downtown Lititz on Facebook, LititzPA on Instagram, the Lititz Farmers Market, the Lititz

Fire & Ice Festival, Taste of Lititz, the winter Edison bulb street lighting, the Apoca-Lititz 5K and the Night Out with Venture Lititz Gala - spent much of 2022 working to define the organization’s guiding principles.

In addition, it recently launched the new Experience Lititz app. The free app is available for download on both iPhones and Android phones and provides listings and links to downtown businesses, as well as a full

event calendar and a Historic Broad Street Walking Tour developed in partnership with the Lititz Historical Foundation. App users can “favorite” their most loved businesses, allowing them to receive push notifications about special events and new menu and product offerings.

Venture Lititz’s mission is “enhancing and sustaining the economic and social vitality of the Lititz community.” For more information, visit www.LititzPa.com.

Baseball players named All-Americans

The Shenandoah University baseball program earned two All-American honors as announced by D3base ball.com. Senior Gavin Horning was named second team All-America, while junior Colby Martin was selected to the fifth team.

Horning, a Lancaster native, batted .409 on the year with seven home runs and drove in 60 RBIs. His batting average and RBIs are currently third and first in the ODAC, respectively.

Martin, a business administration major from Lititz, hit .390 with 50 RBIs and 41 walks. On the bases,

Martin had an ODAC-high 34 steals on 37 attempts.

The two Hornets were named All-Region by D3Baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association, with Horning grabbing the Region 6 Player of the Year by the ABCA.

The All-Americans also snatched All-ODAC honors earlier this season, with Horning making first team and Martin earning second team.

The duo helped Shenandoah to a Super Regionals appearance this season and a program-record 42 wins.

who joined Sertoma a little over a year ago. She created the Shake Me Awake campaign, in cooperation with the Carlisle club’s Feel the Danger campaign, to raise funds to purchase the devices. The alarms connect to a resident’s current fire alarm and provide multiple notifications of a firefrom audible alerts to visual notifications of flashing lights to tactile alerts of a vibrating bed shaker.

“For two months straight, I went around to businesses and people in Manheim and Lititz, raising money to purchase these devices, which cost $250 a piece,” Wood said. “I thought, ‘If I can raise $5,000, I’ll be ecstatic.’” To date, she’s raised

more than $11,000.

“People have been very supportive of this cause,” she stated. “Lititz Mutual was my best sponsor. They gifted $2,500, which would purchase 10 devices for the hearing-impaired.”

Hearing-impaired people are encouraged to apply for a device, which will be available

for free. The deadline for applications is the end of August or while supplies last.

“You don’t realize that there is a need like this in the community, but there is a need,” Wood said, noting that she has reached out to local VFWs to spread the word about the devices for veterans. “There are elderly people who live alone and who could benefit from this. There are parents who have hearingimpaired children who would benefit from this.”

Wood said she’s been overwhelmed by the community support to raise funds for the devices. “I want to thank everybody who sponsored this effort, who welcomed me into their business during business hours and took time to sit down and listen to what we do as a club and what we are doing with this project,” she stated. “Thank you to everybody who donated to make this possible.”

To apply for a free device, contact Wood at 717-824-2658.

Make It With Wool Contest announced

The Pennsylvania Make It With Wool (MIWW) Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the PA Preferred Banquet Hall at the Farm Show Complex, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The contest is open to individuals age 8 and older who sew, knit, or crochet garments with wool or other animal fibers.

promotes the beauty, comfort, and versatility of wool. All fabrics or yarns used in the body of the garment must be 60% or more animal fiber.

Registration is due by Tuesday, Sept. 5. There is a registration fee, plus an additional testing fee per fabric or yarn used. For a registration form and more details, contact Linda Siegel at 717-274-1197 or linda@lebaweb.com. For additional details, visit www.makeitwithwool.com.

Educator recognized as Woman of Influence

Linden Hall School for Girls has announced that Nan Wodarz, head of school, has been named one of Central Penn Business Journal’s 2023 Women of Influence. The designation identifies high-achieving women in various fields for their career accomplishments.

Women of Influence honorees are selected based on their professional experience, community involvement and commitment to mentoring the next generation of leaders. In addition to being celebrated as a Woman of Influence, Wodarz was entered into the Circle of Excellence, which consists of women who have earned longstanding, notable success in their communities while leading the way for other women to achieve their dreams.

A professional networking

reception and awards celebration was held on June 27 at the Sheraton HarrisburgHershey in Harrisburg to honor and recognize this year’s Women of Influence. In addition to offering attendees the opportunity to connect with one another, the event included a banquet and presentations from several corporate sponsors.

Wodarz received the Women of Influence award based on her long-standing career of service, teaching and mentoring around the world. She first arrived at Linden Hall in the summer of 2020, initially being appointed interim head of school. In spring 2022, the board of trustees unanimously named her permanent head of school, making her the first female in Linden Hall’s 277-year history to hold the position.

Wodarz’s professional journey began in the late 1980s, when she taught in some of the most impoverished areas in the United States. As her career advanced, teaching graduate classes allowed her to connect with teachers and leaders who influence the course of children’s lives.

After leaving the classroom, Wodarz

chose a career in educational administration. She has published hundreds of professional articles, participated in speaking engagements and hosted a radio program focused on leadership strategies. During her years working outside the U.S., she collaborated with ministries of education on country-wide school reform efforts. Her endeavors have always placed an emphasis on education, creating opportunities for girls, and developing programs for those with special needs.

Wodarz’s professional qualifications include not only her work experience but also her education. She com-

pleted postdoctoral work at The Wharton School, Harvard Business School and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Additionally, in the past, she has been recognized by governmental organizations, including the Department of Defense and the Department of Education, as well as by universities and school districts around the U.S. She has served on corporate boards, including the YMCA and the Association of School Business Officials International. Linden Hall School for Girls is located at 212 E. Main St., Lititz. For more information, visit www.lindenhall.org.

LCAA opens summer exhibits

On July 23, Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, opened two new exhibits: the membership show in the Kauffman Gallery and a showcase from photographer Mia Curran in the Steinmetz Gallery. Both exhibits will remain on display through Thursday, Aug. 24, during LCAA’s regular hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

The membership show, titled “Summer Breeze,” highlights work from LCAA’s members that revolves around a summer theme. Each member

was able to submit one to three pieces that depict subject matter related to summertime, however the artist interprets it. “Even when we select a theme for a show, we try to leave it open to interpretations,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, event coordinator and member of LCAA. “That way artists can submit more of their work and use anything that fits their imaginations.”

The work featured in “Summer Breeze” will be judged in the professional and nonprofessional categories, and awards will be given out for first, second and third places, as well as an honorable mention.

In the Steinmetz Gallery,

Mia Curran is showcasing her photography in an exhibit titled “The Essence of Nature.” Through her featured work,

For several years, Curran shot on 35 millimeter film cameras, but she now prefers the use of digital cellphone cameras.
