The story of the Penn State Extension’s new Adopt-aPantry program and the participating local community gardens is one of fertility, living off the land and helping others.
A 35-year-old resident of Lititz, Andro Hollander is a Master Gardener and a liaison, a connector between the Lancaster County office of the Penn State Extension and a few dedicated local souls who grow produce and plants at the Lititz Community Garden. Hollander is also a knowledgeable keeper and teller of gardens and their stories.
“Central Pennsylvania is very agricultural heavy,” said Hollander, who completed Penn State Extension’s Master Gardener program two years ago. “Where we live is special. We live in the most fertile part of the
country. I think a lot of people take it for granted. The things you can grow here are magical.”
Located on land behind St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 W. Orange St., Lititz, the Lititz Community Garden is a series of 13 raised garden beds planted, cultivated and maintained by mostly Lititz residents who enjoy the art and science of gardening. What they grow is up to them, and crops range from potatoes, onions, cantaloupes, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and arugula to herbs, spices, teas and flowers.
“They are just everyday Lititz folks who have an interest in gardening, and they show up, which is really important,” said Hollander of the community gardeners. “These are people who care and care deeply. (All the people who are) participating in the community garden are just great people. They may not have

Sounds like some sort of special energy concoction. Some kind of sustenance that invigorates superheroes, enabling them to do amazing things.
Some things are exactly what they seem to be.
“The name (Power Packs Project) comes from the pack of food we provide to help kids succeed in school and have academic success,” said Brad Peterson, Power Packs Project’s executive
director. “We want to empower families to help them make good nutrition decisions. Studies have shown that children need nutrition early in life to have their brains fully develop. We’re providing that nutrition. Studies have always shown that kids sitting in school with empty bellies can’t learn.”

Through its time, the automobile has aided humans in any number of important ways. Some organizations, like the local Lions Club, have even discovered ways for cars to help them serve the community.
The Lititz Lions Club does know a few things about service.

event strikes at the true meaning of what being a Lion is really all about.
“For me, the best part is being able to share this event with so many people from year to year,” said Meghan Clair, the event chairperson and vice president of the Lititz Lions Club. “The service part is my passion. Yes, I love organizing events, but I’m all about the service
part of it. I love cars and it’s a fun event, but it’s about service.”
The 15th annual Lititz Lions Club Car Cruise will be conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 3:30 to 9 p.m. in the downtown business district. Check-ins and staging will be performed at Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, 419 Pierson Road, Lititz, before Main Street from Broad Street to Oak Street is closed to traffic at 5 p.m.
At the conclusion of the event, the show vehicles will start their engines and slowly take turns cruising west on Main Street.

“It’s a mixture of fun,” said Clair. “People come or they just hang out on their porches. There are tons of kids, and they can run around in a safe location. There’s a DJ and a lot of dancing. It’s put together nicely. It’s near the end of the summer and people are out enjoying themselves.”
“When the cars get to Broad Street, they either go left or right,” said Clair. “It’s a cool exit.”
The event is free to attend, and prizes will be awarded to vehicles in 10 categories, including best interior, greatest distance traveled, best motorcycle and best in show. Spectators are afforded an oppor-
More than 200 cars of all makes, models and generations will be on display at the Lititz Lions Club Car Cruise. Among those expected to appear are Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, Studebakers, BMWs, dune buggies, trucks, classic automobiles, hot rods and muscle cars, some from as far away as surrounding states.
“These are car enthusiasts,” said Clair. “Some are people who are retired and have sunk money into different kinds of cars. They’re
LCBA holds meetings, posts upcoming events
The Loyal Christian Benefit Association (LCBA) Branch 1557 held meetings on June 18 and July 16 at the Udder Choice Restaurant in Ephrata. State Rep. David Zimmerman was scheduled to be the speaker at the July 16 gathering.
The June 18 event began with a light supper, after which the meeting was opened by president Linda Mueller. The Lord’s Prayer was recited.
The speaker was Geoffrey Lapp, founder of Minutemen-UNITED, a local organization that connects people in need to assistance and community support services. Through that work, he saw a need for affordable transportation for people who do not own a working vehicle. Lapp then founded Waymark Transport, which offers daily driving services for neighborhood transportation needs as well as contracted driving services for transport of employees and clients.
Following Lapp’s presentation, attendees discussed current and new business. The June haus and pinochle card parties were well attended, and proceeds will be distributed to community nonprofits in November. Upcoming events include a picnic on a Sunday in September, with the date forthcoming, and a cash bingo on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Denver Fire Company. The bingo event will include giveaway drawing prizes, and the event’s proceeds will be distributed to local nonprofits.
Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Udder Choice Restaurant, 1812 W. Main St., with dinner at 5:30 p.m.
people who travel.”
Up to 5,000 spectators are expected to attend, and the organizers of the event are hoping to raise over $14,000 for Lititz Lions Club causes like Warwick School District events, law enforcement programs, emergency services and vision-related resources like eyeglasses and eye exams.
“Ultimately, all of us do this because we have different passions,” said Clair of the Lititz Lions Club’s 60 members. “But collectively, we all come together to do larger service commitments. I want people to know what they are supporting. I also want them to know there are opportunities to serve with us. This particular event is just one way they can do that. This shows we support our community.” For additional information about the Lititz Lions Club, go to www.lititzlions.org.

the weekend. Located at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Suite 102, Lancaster, Power Packs Project distributes and delivers its food mainly on Wednesdays and Thursdays in advance of the weekend.
“One in eight kids in Lancaster County is food insecure,” said Peterson. “They may not know where their next meal is coming from, and the numbers continue to rise. It’s kids your kids go to school with, it’s kids of the people you work with, it’s your neighbor’s kids. Who we serve are kids who are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals at school. Families can sign up for a week, a month or for as long as they need assistance.”
Power Packs Project assists food-insecure students in the school districts of Cocalico, Columbia, Donegal, Hempfield, Lampeter-Strasburg, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Warwick and Lancaster in Lancaster County; students in the Annville-Cleona, Cornwall-Lebanon, Eastern Lebanon County, Northern Lebanon and the Lebanon city school districts in Lebanon County; and students in the Eastern York School District in York County. Beginning this fall, the program will also aid kids in the Conestoga Valley and Red Lion school districts.
“The Conestoga Valley School District came to us; they saw a need,” said Peterson. “It’s a benefit for them for their kids to have better nutrition. Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services is doing great work, and Power Packs is here to work in cooperation with them. We’re complementing each other. It’s not either/or; it’s and.”
Last school year, Power Packs Project distributed a total of 440,000 pounds of food through 95 sites and deliveries. Power Packs receives donated food from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg and through partnerships and collaborations with other organizations.
“There are a lot of misconceptions that it’s an urban problem,” said Peterson. “But it’s an urban, suburban and rural problem. There are a lot of people out there struggling with food problems. It’s hard for some to comprehend that people are going hungry.”
Power Packs Project, which was founded in 2005 and was incorporated as a nonprofit four years later, is manned by a staff of five full-time employees and a parttimer. Much of the organization’s packaging and delivery work is performed through 6,000 hours of annual volunteer commitment.

at 6:30 p.m. to be recognized as former queens,” said Denise Hess, junior queen coordinator and member of the Farm Show queen committee. “This will be after opening ceremonies and before we crown the new queen.” Former queens are also invited to ride on a float in the Farm Show parade on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
The Farm Show held the first queen contest in 1955. The competition is open to any female between the ages of 16 and 20 who resides in or attends Manheim Central, Donegal, Hempfield, Elizabethtown or Warwick school districts.
“Once the queen is crowned, she will reign over the Farm Show, interacting with adults and children who attend the show,” Hess stated. Queens also attend all of the livestock competitions and hand out ribbons to the winners as well as attending the bake sale and auction at the Farm Show, among other responsibilities.
“Another major requirement of the queen is to represent the Man-
heim Farm Show at the State Fair Queen competition in Hershey, Pa., in January,” Hess said. “The queen committee works with our candidate in the weeks leading up to the competition, teaching her skills that are needed for the competition.” Other duties of the queen include teaching children about an aspect of agriculture through an Ag in the Classroom presentation.
Hess is hoping for a large turnout of former queens at this year’s Farm Show.
“We would love to have former queens come and join the celebration with the other former queens, be recognized for their contribution to Farm Show, and to encourage young girls to enter the Farm Show queen competition,” she said. “If any former queen has any of their queen memorabiliasash, crown, etc. - we would love for them to bring it along and wear it to the Monday evening opening ceremonies.”

the education to be a Master Gardener, but people who are Master Gardeners have not mastered gardening. There’s always something to be learned.”
In past seasons, some of the surplus produce grown at the Lititz Community Garden has been donated to local organizations like the Lititz Senior Center at the growers’ discretion. The recently established Adopt-a-Pantry Program is Penn State Extension’s way of raising awareness about similar produce donations.
“Adopt-a-Pantry is a new program,” Hollander said. “(Penn State Extension) is trying to get community gardens to participate. They’re trying to get people involved in the program. They’re asking people to donate what they’re not going to use, and people are cool with that. I think donations are something we’re
going to do more of next year.”
Begun just four years ago itself, the Lititz Community Garden currently has a waiting list for residents looking to use the raised beds for growing. Hollander said there have been discussions with officials at St. Paul about expanding the garden.
Residents do not pay to access the Lititz Community Garden.
“There’s only 13 beds, and there could absolutely be more,” said Hollander. “There is absolutely a demand. At its broadest, a community garden is a space set aside for people to exercise their own visions when it comes to gardening. They’re given boundaries to exercise that vision.”
