Hard work, perseverance, teamwork
BY JEFF FALK
They play for themselves. They march for their bandmates. They perform for their families. They show up for their school.
And they show out for their community.
No matter what they do or where they go, members of the Warwick marching band simply represent.
“I think (the band) is held in high regard in the community, just based on the support we get,” said Aimee Taylor, president of the Warwick Band Parents Organization. “We never have trouble getting band sponsors. (Community members) know they’ve won competitions and awards and championships. They hear them practicing after dark all the time.”
“But the band works hard for everything they achieve,” continued Taylor. “They earn it. It takes hours and hours and hours of work to make it a successful effort.”
After starting rehearsals in June, the 2024 edition of the Warwick marching band is more than halfway through its fivemonth season. From now until it closes out its fall campaign at the Championship Cavalcade of Bands at Dallastown on Saturday, Nov. 2, the band will perform prior to three more home football games; at halftime of two more away football games; at a competition at Boyertown on Saturday, Sept. 28; at its own Cavalcade of Bands on Saturday, Oct. 12; at the Bands of America Mid-Atlantic Championships at the University of Delaware on Saturday, Oct. 19;
and at a competition at Manheim Central on Saturday, Oct. 26.
“For the band to be successful, (members are) growing musically and getting more confidence in the music,” said Taylor. “There’s also a sense of camaraderie and teamwork involved. They’re all working together for a common goal. They’re always trying to continually improve. I know the kids care about their scores (at competitions), but if they (continually improve), I think they’ll feel successful.”
The Warwick marching band features 87 students in grades eight through 12 - 50 members in the woodwinds and brass sections, 21 in the percussion unit and 16 members of the color guard. The band is headed up by senior drum major Kaelyn Jones and sophomore drum major

It started as a daughter-mother spat, as a way to mend fences, as a way to come together on common ground. It has evolved into something very few humans could’ve imagined.
Change of Pace Women’s Bible Study (CPWBS) has seen a lot of water flow under its bridge over the last half-century. People have come and gone, ideas have been explored and forgotten, generational torches have been passed, but the group has never
wavered from its commitment to seeking life’s deeper meaning and God’s will.
“(CPWBS’ origin) had everything to do with my mother (Ruth Martin) and I,” said Dona Fisher, CPWBS’ founder. “We didn’t get along, and I couldn’t deal with it anymore. So we asked, ‘What can we do to bring us together?’ It’s been a bonding of God’s words, and (the women have) been there for each other to depend on. We’re there for anyone who comes in. It’s just a beautiful place; there’s love and

Church posts gun violence prevention event
Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, will display a Memorial to the Lost from Saturday, Sept. 21, to Sunday, Sept. 29, as a gun violence prevention initiative.
The church will dedicate the memorial on Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. The memorial will display dozens of T-shirts, each bearing the name, date of death, and age at death of a person in Lancaster County who was killed through homicide using a gun. The memorial is an education tool developed by Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence to honor these murder victims, their surviving family members, and the community.
The organization is headquartered in Philadelphia and has a regional site in Lancaster County. In addition to dedicating the memorial, people will gather at the peace pole in front of the church to pray and sing in recognition of the International Day of Peace and to increase awareness of gun violence and its impact on the community.
Activities for action will be available after the service. Craft activities will allow children and families to share thoughts about gun violence prevention.

Grace Myers, with additional leadership by senior wind captain
Evie Strayer, senior wind captain Carly Ruchalski, senior percussion captain Jacob Soslow, senior color guard captain Katherine Karcheski and senior color guard captain Crystal Kirui.
“There seems to be a lot of excitement, a lot of new energy,” said Taylor. “The new kids are fitting in really well. They’re very dedicated. (Band) is not easy.
Most of them are involved with a lot of musical activities. I think there’s a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that comes from doing their best. Plus, a lot of friendships grow out of marching bands.”
“I’m most excited about performing at (the Championship Cavalcade of Bands) and being a leader to the team,” said Kaelyn. “Being a drum major is pushing me outside by comfort zone, but I’m excited for
the challenge because I love being in marching band.”
This year’s Warwick marching band field show is titled “The Road Less Traveled.” It features music from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s waltz from “Sleeping Beauty,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, Radiohead’s “Creep,” Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” The highlights of the show are student solos from Strayer on baritone and Brisa Miller on mellophone.
“I think the band members
should be learning that things don’t necessarily come easily,” said Taylor. “If it’s something you want, you’ve got to put the time in and do the work. Perseverance is something that’s important. You do see a lot of older kids helping younger kids. Out of that comes leadership.”
“I’m most excited to perform a show that’s so different from any other show we’ve done while I was a part of the band,” said Jacob. “It’s a great chance for us to demonstrate our versatility.”

come with friends,” said Best. “They’re going to come and hang out and socialize. People get something to eat and sit and talk. It’s a very social atmosphere.”
Representatives of more than 85 craft breweries from Lancaster County, surrounding counties, other parts of Pennsylvania and even from as far away as Virginia, New York and New Jersey will be on hand for the Lititz Craft Beer Fest. Nearly 180 offerings will be available.
The afternoon’s vibe will be enhanced by live music and culinary options from local food trucks.

“The event has evolved a lot,” said Best, who helped found the Lititz Craft Beer Fest in 2014. “At the beginning, there were a lot more breweries from out of state. So many of the breweries we have now are from Pennsylvania; they’re more local and regional. What we’ve also seen grow is our ability to engage with sponsors, and they’ve become great partners. Some are just eager to help in any way they can.”
Through last year’s festival, Lititz AMBUCS raised $106,000 for 20 nonprofits, including the Warwick Community Ambulance Association, the Warwick School District, Warwick Education Foundation, the Lititz Warwick Community Chest and the national chapter of AMBUCS. Since its inception, the festival has raised more than $700,000 for charities.
“The event is first and foremost a fundraiser that supports the mission, and the mission is conquering challenges in independence and mobility,” said Best. “A lot of people have come to love this event, but it doesn’t just happen. It’s a labor of love for us because we see the good that comes from it. There are a lot of organizations aligned with our mission, and people who buy tickets can feel good about having a great time. Those funds are going to organizations that have a need and do good things in the community.”
hugs and tears and crying, and the women leave rejoicing. We’re known for connecting in our fractured world.”
On Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., CPWBS will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding with a special meeting at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The nondenominational group will present author Julie Clinton, the founder of Extraordinary Women Ministries, which seeks to draw women closer to God, and three study offerings - “Me, Myself and Lies,” “Your Beautiful Purpose” and “Blessed Are the Chosen.”
“(CPWBS) is a place where women are not alone,” said Fisher. “It’s a sisterhood, and they can become friends. When we help others, our hearts are open to healing. We share our struggles with each other. If we have our prayers
answered, we just rejoice. It’s very private and not a very gossipy place at all. It’s just a powerful serenity.”
CPWBS, which meets every Thursday morning from September to April at Lancaster Alliance Church, is a sisterhood of about 150 female attendees. They hail from all walks of life and from various parts of Lancaster County, from Manheim Township to Elizabethtown, from Strasburg to Ephrata.
“Some women leave their Thursdays open to feed their souls,” said Fisher, a resident of Bent Creek.
“They’re all different; everyone has a different personality. But I treat everyone with respect. The pain that these women come to me with, if I don’t know how to deal with it, I turn it over to God. You wouldn’t believe how many of these women don’t have a church. They come in to be healed.”
“Our pace in the real world
demands our time,” Fisher continued. “Unless we set aside time for God, we’ll go off to places where life is not for God. I thought it would be great to name it Change of Pace.”
The women of CPWBS regularly deal with all sorts of life challenges, including raising children, abuse, spousal difficulties, mental health issues and physical limitations.
“(The Bible) has all the truth in it, and the truth will set us free,”
said Fisher.
At the start, CPWBS began meeting at Indian Springs Golf Club in East Hempfield Township, now Four Seasons Golf Club. The group has been meeting at Lancaster Alliance Church for the better part of the last 35 years.
