Middle school can be a key stage in a child’s development. It’s a time when kids are experiencing new things, exploring their independence and making decisions that will affect their futures.
Extracurricular activities like drama and theater can have a positive influence on that development. Now that’s a true life adventure.
“For some of them, they come out and for the first time they’re handed a task,” said Justin Droegemueller, co-director of the Warwick Middle School’s production of “Gooney Bird Greene and Her True Life Adventures.”
“Seeing them rise to the challenge and take the responsibility is rewarding. They’re trying new things. I think that’s kind of cool. I try to encourage them to be themselves and to share their lives and to share their sparks. When you do that, it encourages
others to share their spark. That’s what this age group is all about.”
“Gooney Bird Greene and Her True Life Adventures” will be performed at Warwick Middle School, 401 Maple St., Lititz, on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. General admission tickets can be purchased on Thursday, Nov. 14, between 6 and 7 p.m. at the middle school auditorium box office or an hour before each show.
Each performance is expected to last 90 minutes.
“The general plot revolves around a girl coming to a new school,” said Allison Droegemueller, co-director of the play. “When she arrives, everyone is set in their mindsets. She brings this new level of energy and lots of life. As she tells her true life stories, everyone in the class becomes more outgoing and creative.”
The cast of “Gooney Bird Greene and Her True Life Adventures”
includes seven eighth-graders and 15 seventh-graders. The cast features Addison Woge as Gooney Bird Greene, Nola Lobo as Mrs. Pidgeon, Alaina DePaul as Felicia Ann, Willow Johnson as Chelsea, Noah Lehman as Beanie, Valyn Gagliardic as Tricia, Chloe Bechdel as Keiko, Oleksandr Hyrniuk as Malcolm, Jackson Wainman as Barry and Adam Walker as Nicholas.
“It’s students from all walks of life,” said Justin. “Oh, my goodness, I don’t know how they do it. These kids really, really step up. Some of these parts have close to a hundred lines. We just end up getting these talented kids. It’s really kind of wonderful how they rise to the occasion.”
“It’s an awesome show, based on an awesome book with some awesome characters,” said Jackson. “I enjoy acting and being there, meeting new faces and speaking my part. It’s a funny show with an entertaining story. We’ve worked as hard as we could to make an

When we honor our veterans, we celebrate our freedoms. Music is a patriotic and inspiring way to connect the two.
Since honoring veterans was one of the reasons behind the forming of Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO), then it is fitting that the band is planning a concert to be held near Veterans Day.
“When we founded the band, one of the tenets was to honor veterans and play music for veterans,” said Joe Chestnutt, one of the founders of CBJO.
“We really, truly love playing the music we play. We want to help veterans and serve veterans, and we want to bring this music to the community at large.”
On Sunday, Nov. 10 - the day before Veterans Day - at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, CBJO will present its annual Veterans Day concert.
On that evening, CBJO will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of its forming.

The key to giving gifts seems to be understanding that uniqueness makes them personal. Events like the Lititz Art Association’s (LAA) Holiday Gift Show present great opportunities to locate unique gifts.
“When I receive a gift, I always think about how much thought goes into it,” said Carolann Van Wyen, an LAA board member who oversees public relations for the organization. “Did (the giver) really think hard
about what I might like? They’re not doing it out of obligation. The Holiday Gift Show gives people an opportunity to go outside the norm. Some people do a majority of their shopping there. There are unique, beautiful gift ideas there. This show is diverse in what it offers. You can shop for so many people in one place.”
The eighth edition of LAA’s annual Holiday Gift Show will be presented over two days, Friday, Nov. 15, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. indoors

Veterans concert
is free to attend, and doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
“(The concert’s vibe has) always felt electric,” said Chestnutt. “We have filled that sanctuary, and there’s anticipation. Once we get playing, people clap along and that fires up the band. It stirs up memories, memories of music (the audience) loves.”
During the 10-minute intermission of the concert, a freewill offering to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project will be accepted. Last year, CBJO’s annual concert raised $2,300 for the national veterans’ service organization.
“We’re trying to raise funds for a very charitable organization,” said Chestnutt, himself a Marine Corps veteran. “I’ve just always followed Wounded Warrior Project since I became aware of it. They’re responsible with their money.”
While the music selection that night will be focused on patriotic numbers, salutes and marches, CBJO will also perform big band jazz pieces from the 1940s to 1970s. They are familiar selections that often elicit audience participation.
“It’s classic stuff. It’s a huge variety of stuff,” said Chestnutt. “It’s great big band music. It started out as the music
of the greatest generation, and now it’s the music of all generations.”
CBJO’s distinguishing sound is made up of four trumpets, five trombones, two alto saxophones, two tenor saxophones, a baritone saxophone, a guitar, a keyboard, an upright acoustic bass, a drum set and in-house vocalists. But it’s really the people who make the band - skilled, experienced performers from all over Lancaster County who enjoy playing as much as their audiences love hearing them play.
“We just have people from all across the spectrum who love to play and who came together as Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra,” said Chestnutt. “They are all talented. Everybody has their strengths, and a lot of people in this band also participate in other community bands. There’s a community of
Fall Fest to support nature and science programs
musicians in this area to draw from.
The secret to having a good band is having a steady membership, just knowing how each other plays.”
CBJO was established from Manheim Township High School’s Class of 1978 35th class reunion in 2013.
“It was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to play together again?’” said Chestnutt of that fateful reunion. “We got ourselves together and put together the band. We pulled together all these people who wanted to play.”
In December, CBJO will present its second Christmas Concert, “Swinging Christmas,” at a date and site yet to be announced. For additional information about CBJO or to hear its music, search for “Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra” on Facebook.

Holiday Gift Show
at Lititz Church of the Brethren (LCOB), 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The show, which is free to attend, will feature the work of 35 members of LAA.
“It’s a well-lit building, and there are booths set up around the perimeter,” said Van Wyen. “You walk in a circle, and everyone is happy because the holidays are coming. It’s a nice way to mingle with people who appreciate
art. You’ll see artists in neighboring booths encouraging each other. There’s a sense of family between the artists, and that can’t help overflow to the public.”
LAA’s participating presenters work in the mediums of watercolors, acrylics, oils, graphics, ornaments, ceramics, wood carvings and jewelry, and all their works will be available for sale. The locally handmade items that will be available include pottery, traditional artwork, sculpture, paintings and candles.
Fall Open House
In addition, LCOB’s Golden Needles sewing group will offer quilts for sale. To view some of the items that will be available at the Holiday Gift Show, go to www.facebook.com/ LititzOutdoorFineArtShow.
“Some artists create items specifically for the holidays,” said Van Wyen. “There are others who integrate holiday items into the things they normally have. Not everyone wants to buy Christmas-themed items. It makes it very nice for the people who come. Everything there could be purchased as a gift. There’s thought that goes into everything.”
LAA, which was founded in 1949 and took on its current name in 2014, consists of 105 members. LAA sponsors five events throughout the year, all of which are meant to connect its artists and their creations with the local community.
“This show is cozy,” said Van Wyen. “It’s not as big as the other shows we do. It’s intimate. There are a lot of artists sharing with each other, just catching up with each other. It’s a show the members like.”
“The LAA’s membership is a creative group,” added Van Wyen. “In this particular show, they’re thinking about the local people and the opportunity to give the gift of art for a loved one this year. Our membership is very focused on the people who come to our events. We want to create an event that’s welcoming and inviting. We’re just a friendly group who enjoys sharing our work with the public.”

Lititz CROP Hunger Walk set
The Lititz CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10. The walk will begin at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. Registration will be at 1:30 p.m., and the walk will start at 2 p.m. Participants will walk a 1-mile or 3-mile route through Lititz and return to the church for snacks.
Over the past 54 years, tens of thousands of walkers have raised more than $500 million through the annual CROP Hunger Walk. This year, Lititz and about 700 other communities nationwide are holding interfaith CROP Hunger Walks around the theme “Ending Hunger One Step at a Time.” Walkers can sign up online and walk to show their solidarity with the millions of neighbors around the world who must walk to live, as well as with the millions served by local food pantries, food banks and meal sites in the United States.
CROP Hunger Walks are community-based walk fundraising events held in cities and towns across the United States, created to support the global mission of Church World Service (CWS), a faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster. To learn more about CWS, visit www.cwsglobal.org. From providing clean water and hygiene training in Vietnam to combating droughts in Nicaragua to stocking shelves in hundreds of food pantries across the United States, CROP Hunger Walks seek to fight hunger and build healthier communities.
CROP Hunger Walks raise funds each year that enable CWS to prepare for and respond immediately to devastating emergencies, like the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. Walkers are encouraged to reach out to friends to sponsor their walk as a way to support their neighbors who are struggling to deal with flooding and destruction. While the
walks support global and local hunger fighting efforts, a portion of the funds raised this fall will also be designated to long-term disaster recovery. To learn more about how churches and organizations can help CWS prepare for disasters by creating emergency kits, visit www.cwskits.org.
After a CROP Hunger Walk, 25% of the funds raised is returned to the host community to support local hunger fighting efforts. Last year’s Lititz CROP Hunger Walk on Oct. 24 raised $4,625, with a total of 24 walkers. The leader in fundraising was Ralph Moyer, who collected $2,590 in donations. After the walk, 25% of donations went to Lititz Warwick Community Chest, which received $1,150 to support its work providing local food resources. More information about the organization is available at www.lw communitychest.org.
This year, Warwick Community Hub, a local hunger resource agency located at 165 Front St., Lititz, will be the local organization to receive 25% of walk donations. To learn more about the agency, call 717-610-5878 or visit www.warwick-hub.org.
The goal for 2024 is to raise $5,500 and have five or more teams participating from the Lititz area. For many years, a number of local faith communities and individuals have participated in the Lititz CROP Hunger Walk.
To sign up and donate, visit https://events.crophungerwalk.org/ cropwalks/event/lititzpa. Individuals and their team members can make donations by credit card or PayPal, and a receipt will be sent through email for tax purposes.
Faith community organizations and schools are encouraged to participate in the walk. After registering as a team or individual, they may access education and worship resources to provide ideas on ways people can become leaders and can promote and support the walk.
Historical foundation posts annual meeting
Lititz Historical Foundation will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road.
After a brief meeting, local historian Benton Webber will discuss the 200th anniversary re-enactment tour of Marquis de Lafayette.
While only a teenager, the French aristocrat left his home in France and traveled to the newly formed United States of America to help the country win the Revolutionary War. A half century later, he was invited to return as a celebrated guest of the nation and traveled across the United States for 13 months.
In July of 2025, the 200th anniversary re-enactment tour will follow Lafayette’s footsteps
