Nightingale scholarship will aid Stephanie Grambau’s pursuit of her calling BY JEFF FALK

Scholarships can be both motivation and rewards. Stephanie Grambau worked hard to earn her scholarship. Now that scholarship will help support her continued hard work. A 53-year-old resident of Manheim Township with a Lititz address, Grambau was recently awarded a prestigious Nightingale scholarship to be used in her pursuit of a Master of Science in the field of nursing.

Grambau attends Millersville University’s Wehrheim School of Nursing, where she is studying to become a family nurse practitioner. Grambau was awarded the $6,000 Nightingale scholarship following a stringent application process that took into consideration her gradepoint average, volunteer experience and letters of reference. She formally accepted the scholarship at the end of October at the 34th annual Nightingale Awards Gala at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hotel in Harrisburg. See Nightingale scholarship pg 2

Coats for Kids will warm hearts BY JEFF FALK

Salvation Army Lancaster volunteer Joseph Molloy sorts donations for Coats for Kids.

If indeed we do take our coats for granted, it may somehow be related to a belief that everyone should own one. Salvation Army Lancaster has taken that belief and transformed it into a goal. At 131 S. Queen St., Lancaster, the Salvation Army is giving away coats, lots of coats, coats with sale tags still on them - along with gloves and hats and scarves - all in an effort to weather the coming cold months. This initiative is being referred to as Coats for Kids, and the aim is to make sure every child in Lancaster County has a brand-new coat this winter. See Coats for Kids pg 2

ing responsibilities. “I was always starting a nursing job in a new area,” said Grambau. “At the time, I felt it was detrimental because I wasn’t making any progress. During the pandemic I realized I wanted to be a nurse practitioner, and it struck me that I had a broad knowledge base of nursing. I’ve seen a little bit of everything, and that’s what a family nurse practitioner needs. In reality, it was leading me to this point.” Grambau simply followed her calling. “For me, I felt like the entire nursing career was leading me to this,” said Grambau. “Nurses take care of people; it’s what we do. Nurse practitioners make their own determinations; we don’t just follow someone

“We live in Pennsylvania,” said Shady Boules, operations and development manager for Salvation Army Lancaster. “It gets really cold here. For some people, coats seem very basic. We take them for granted. But there are so many families who can’t buy coats.” Coats for Kids’ distribution process kicked off on Oct. 17, and to this point more than 1,700 new coats have been given to families in need. Boules estimated that by the end of the winter season in March, Salvation Army Lancaster will have distributed as many as 3,000 coats. There are requirements to receive a coat, and each child is limited to one coat per season. Individuals can still get coats by calling 717-3977565 before the end of February

2024. “Families can come to our building and pick their own coats, even their own colors,” said Boules. “We treat everyone with dignity and respect. Some just pick their coats out and put them on immediately. We’ve had people asking since the summer, ‘When are you going to distribute the coats?’ We’ve heard moms say, ‘If there were no Coats for Kids, I’m not sure what I’d do.’” While Coats for Kids is just one of the many community-oriented services it performs, Salvation Army Lancaster is merely a facilitator, the link between a generous community and those in need. The coats are purchased through donations from individuals, businesses and other organizations, and some local churches even go as far as conducting their own coat drives to support Coats for Kids. Two Salvation Army Lancaster staff members shop for coats throughout the year, always on the lookout for bargains. Boules said that when some local stores find out that the outerwear is being purchased for Coats for Kids, they will intentionally discount their merchandise. “We’re just the bridge from the donors to our neighbors in need,” said Boules. “We don’t own the coats. It’s a community event. We feel blessed with a lot of generous donors. The need is great, and we can’t do this alone. When we see the families coming in, it fills us with joy and gives us passion for what we do.” Coats for Kids, which Boules referred to as one of the Salvation Army’s “necessary” and “essential” programs, was started in 1994. Coats for Kids has already given away nearly 800 more coats than the 950 it distributed in 2022. “I don’t think it’s something that

will ever be compromised,” said Boules. “These are our neighbors in Lancaster County. We’ve seen every year, as the need has grown, the generosity of the donors has grown as well. It’s a lot of work, but it’s amazing.” For additional information about Salvation Army Lancaster’s Coats for Kids, go to https://pa.salvation army.org/lancaster-pa/CFK.

Grambau is striving to be the best nurse she can be, despite the fact that the field was not her first chosen profession. In 1992, Grambau graduated with a Bachor of Arts in philosophy from Villanova. Four years later, she graduated from Temple with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. “I wasn’t fulfilled by the business world, just making money for someone else,” said Grambau. “I didn’t think I was making a difference. I did a lot of volunteering before I became a nurse.” Because Stephanie’s husband, Todd, was a member of the military, the Grambaus moved around a lot. Stephanie took nursing jobs where she could find them, all kinds, with vary-

“It was pretty exciting,” reported Grambau. “It was a nice night and just a little overwhelming. It was all nurses from all over the state. There was all this energy from having all these nurses together in one place.” Grambau is about halfway into the three-year pursuit of her master’s degree. Currently a registered nurse, Grambau is employed by South Central Pennsylvania Medical Reserve Corps, a nonprofit health institute headquartered in New Cumberland. “I work part-time, and I study all the time,” said Grambau. “There’s a lot of studying. I spend more time doing schoolwork than doing anything else. To be a nurse practitioner, you really need to have the experience even to study for the degree.”

The event will be held in the farmhouse garage. The Stoltzfuses are a vendor at the Lititz Farmers Market. The shop will feature homemade Christmas cookies, sourdough breads and biscotti, jams, pickled vegetables, raw honey, homemade soap and candles, and discounted Christmas items, crafts, and more. Free gifts bags will be available when shoppers spend a set minimum amount.

the Lititz Borough Police Department, the Warwick School District and likeminded organizations in Denver, Elizabethtown, Paradise, New Holland and the Solanco area. “Our goal is to continue to build relationships so people can find support,” said Jeffrey. “We’ve been thoughtful about how we rolled out the Hub. We want people to know who the Hub is and how we’re trying to help the community. We want leaders of other organizations to understand what we are doing. The awareness is important.” While the Warwick Community Hub is off to a great start, there’s still plenty of work left to do. “It’s been a good year,” said Jeffrey. “I feel like we’re right in the middle of the things we’re trying to be. But we’re trying to navigate what’s next. The community connect is important.” For additional information about the Warwick Community Hub, go to www.warwick-hub.org.

Shawna Billek, Warwick Community Hub’s operations coordinator. Since its inception, the Warwick Community Hub has helped about 70 families in need. “Through our work, what we have seen are single-income families trying to rent two-bedroom apartments in the (Lititz) borough for $1,800 per month,” said Charis Pankratz, Warwick Community Hub’s resource coordinator. “With one income, that’s so hard to afford. We hear these stories on a weekly basis.” “It’s a great community. It’s a wonderful place to live,” Pankratz added. “But the reality is that some people don’t have food. We want to make sure everyone has that need met. We also want to do that well, with mutual respect. We want to bring the community together to meet their needs. But we’re still figuring out what that looks like.” While it does offer some direct assistance, the Warwick Community Hub focuses on connecting families with currently available resources. Through its work, the Warwick Community Hub has developed relationships with social agencies, churches,
