ENO Music Director Mark Wigglesworth is an acclaimed Shostakovich interpreter, having recorded all of the composer’s symphonies, and conducted a previous production of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk for the Company. He has also conducted Così fan tutte, Falstaff, Katya Kabanova and Parsifal for ENO.

Shostakovich’s operatic masterpiece of the Soviet era traces the downfall of a bored and lonely merchant’s wife, who seeks solace and excitement in an affair that ultimately leads to her downfall. Its graphic language and explicit portrayal of sex and violence led to the work’s ban in the Soviet Union for almost 30 years.

Opens 28 September 2015 (10 performances)
Rossini’s comic masterpiece – a prequel to the story of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro – returns to the London Coliseum in Jonathan Miller’s elegant and much-loved production. Now in its twelfth revival and described as a ‘national institution’ by the Sunday Telegraph, this Tiepolo-inspired staging makes brilliant interplay between Italian commedia dell’arte and Whitehall farce.
DIRECTOR Jonathan Miller
ENO Favourite Andrew Shore returns as Bartolo, one of his signature roles, giving free rein to his peerless comic gifts and timing. The 2014/15 ENO season saw him delight London Coliseum audiences in roles that varied from Benoit/Alcindoro (La bohème) to Beckmesser (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg). Australian baritone Morgan Pearse will return after his ENO debut in Terry Gilliam’s five-star production of Benvenuto Cellini to sing the title role.

Opens 16 October 2015 (14 performances)
Fast-rising Chinese conductor Xian Zhang has served as Music Director of Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi since September 2009 and also appears regularly with the London Symphony and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestras. She made her ENO debut with La bohème in 2007, a performance that The Guardian noted will ‘one day be remembered as a significant stepping stone in an illustrious career.’ Leading the cast is sensational soprano Corinne Winters, who launched her European career with ‘dauntless brilliance’ (Daily Telegraph) in 2013 as Violetta in Peter Konwitschny’s ENO production of La traviata. She returned to the company in 2014 to sing the role of Teresa in Terry Gilliam’s five-star production of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini.

THE FORCE OF DESTINY NEW PRODUCTION GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813–1901) Francesco Maria Piave, after Angel de Saavedra, Duke of Riva, with a scene by Friedrich von Schiller; additional text by Antonio Ghislanzoni
Opens 9 November 2015 (8 performances)
Catalan director Calixto Bieito returns to ENO with a new production of Verdi’s The Force of Destiny. A rarity in ENO’s repertory, the Company’s last production of this powerful work was in 1992. Based on the Spanish drama Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino (1835), by Ángel de Saavedra, the opera tells the tragic love story of Don Alvaro and Donna Leonora. Set at the time of the Spanish Civil War, Bieito’s production contains many references to Spanish culture. Celebrated Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones, most recently seen at ENO in Richard Jones’s Olivier Award-winning production of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, makes his role debut as the nobleman Don Alvaro. Soprano Tamara Wilson will make her ENO and role debut as Donna Leonora. A rising star across the Atlantic, Wilson will be making her British debut in this production. THE MIKADO REVIVAL ARTHUR SULLIVAN (1842–1900) & W. S. GILBERT (1836–1911) Opens 21 November 2015 (13 performances)
Almost 30 years on from its premiere, Jonathan Miller’s iconic production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Japanese send-up returns complete with high-kicking chorus lines, satirical touches and a wonderfully elegant score. Miller’s ‘bright and sharp’ (The Guardian) production of The Mikado has become a true audience favourite. It takes the story out of the tiny oriental town of Titipu and sets it in the faintly seedy grandeur of a 1930’s English seaside hotel. This Marx Brothers-inspired song-and-dance take on G&S has long been a hit with theatre-goers of all ages. A British cast of youthful talent and seasoned veterans has been assembled for this revival. Distinguished bass Robert Lloyd sings the Mikado for the first time. Richard Suart returns as Ko-Ko, and ENO Harewood Artists Mary Bevan and Anthony Gregory play the lovers Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo. ENO Charles Mackerras Fellow Fergus Macleod makes his company debut. The ENO Mackerras Fellowship celebrates the legacy of Sir Charles Mackerras, ENO Music Director 1970–1977, by providing a unique opportunity for an emerging conducting talent to develop their skills with mentoring from former ENO Music Director Edward Gardner and current Music Director Mark Wigglesworth.

THE MAGIC FLUTE REVIVAL WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756–1791) Emanuel Schikaneder
Opens 5 February 2016 (13 performances)
A huge hit with audiences, McBurney’s theatrically imaginative production is given a contemporary setting that pays homage to the essence of Mozart and Schikaneder’s 1791 original. Live sound effects and breathtaking video animations complement The Magic Flute’s own delightful combination of the light-hearted and the profound. The Magic Flute will be conducted by acknowledged Mozartian and ENO Music Director Mark Wigglesworth. He has previously conducted ‘altogether wonderful’ (Independent on Sunday) performances of Mozart’s Così fan tutte for ENO in 2002 and 2003. This revival boasts a world-class roster of ENO regulars led by British tenor and former ENO Harewood Artist Allan Clayton as Tamino alongside soprano Lucy Crowe as Pamina. Peter Coleman-Wright will sing Papageno and James Creswell returns as Sarastro. Young Canadian soprano Ambur Braid is quickly establishing herself in dramatic coloratura soprano roles, encompassing Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Massenet’s Esclarmonde, Handel’s Semele, and Mozart’s Queen of Night. #ENOFlute

Opens 17 February 2016 (7 performances)
Award-winning director Christopher Alden returns to ENO for its first-ever production of Bellini’s indisputable Bel canto masterpiece Norma. Alden’s critically admired production, first seen at Opera North in 2012, relocates the original setting from ancient Gaul to the American Mid-West of the late nineteenth century, in a staging that was considered ‘alive, energising and absorbing’ (Daily Telegraph).
DIRECTOR Christopher Alden
Norma explores the life of an enclosed community desperate to protect its beliefs in the face of unstoppable change. At the heart of this lies the impossible love between Norma and Pollione, father of her children and the outsider who is destroying the community’s way of life. When he betrays Norma, she urges her people to rise up and fight for their freedom.

Opens 4 March 2016 (7 performances)
Improbable Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Phelim McDermott, described by The Guardian as ‘one of the most energising and provocative forces in British theatre’, returns to ENO to direct Philip Glass’s iconic Akhnaten. This powerfully mesmerising piece, a thought-provoking and meditative portrait of the life and religious convictions of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten, has not been at ENO since 1987. Its UK premiere by ENO marked the beginning of the very special relationship between Philip Glass and the Company. Recent years have seen ENO present McDermott’s productions of both the London premiere of Satyagraha (‘a masterpiece’ Independent) and the UK premiere of The Perfect American (‘excellent’ Daily Express).

Opens 16 May 2016 (17 performances)
Madam Butterfly remains one of opera’s most enduring tales of unrequited love. Puccini’s tragic love story tells of Cio-Cio San (aka Madam Butterfly), a young Japanese girl who falls in love with handsome American naval officer Pinkerton. But shortly after their wedding, Pinkerton abandons her and returns to America. Butterfly gives birth to their son and patiently awaits her husband’s return, never giving up hope. British tenor David Butt Philip makes his role debut as Pinkerton. His previous performances for ENO in La bohème received enthusiastic reviews with The Guardian commenting that he was ‘a Rodolfo to treasure.’ Alun Rhys Jenkins and Pamela Helen Stephen reprise their roles from the 2013 revival. ENO Harewood Artists George von Bergen and Samantha Price also feature. Richard Armstrong conducts his first Puccini opera at ENO. #ENOButterfly
