Tom Hammick is a British artist based in East Sussex and London. Moved by the minutiae in life, he reflects on our place in the world. His paintings reveal both the fragility of life on Earth and his intoxication with it. They are metaphors for love and loss, evoking states of mind and transience, and at root celebrate what it is like to be human. The painting 'Minnie’s Cabin' was inspired by Richard Jones' mesmerising ENO production of The Girl of the Golden West. Minnie, at the door of her cabin refuge, watches as her patched up lover Johnson disappears down the mountain side to his fate. Tom Hammick is currently ENO's first painter and printmaker in residence. Over the next ten months, Tom will make work in response to several operas in ENO's programme 2014/2015 season. When finished, these paintings and prints will be included in a series of exhibitions at Flowers Gallery London and New York, and in a museum tour around the UK between 2015 and 2017.
