WHAT’S ON AUTUMN 2015 SPRING 2016
CONTENTS
WELCOME
TO ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA It’s a great pleasure to introduce ENO’s 2015/16 Season. From Mozart and Rossini, through Verdi and Puccini to Philip Glass – the eight productions of our Autumn and Spring seasons offer a diverse range of operatic repertoire. I truly hope there is something to offer everyone a memorable visit to the London Coliseum. At its heart, ENO is a company of world-class musical storytellers, and we are delighted to welcome the distinguished British conductor Mark Wigglesworth as ENO’s new Music Director in succession to Edward Gardner. Mark will be conducting many of the season’s highlights, and you can read about his aspirations for the company on pages 10–11. We have five new productions in this period, all collaborations with some of the world’s most talented and in-demand directors. In the autumn we have Dmitri Tcherniakov’s powerful Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk; Benedict Andrews’s spectacular new staging of La bohème, and a major new collaboration with New York’s Metropolitan Opera in Calixto Bieito’s The Force of Destiny. In the spring we have a thrilling Norma directed by Christopher Alden, while Phelim McDermott continues his exploration of the operas of Philip Glass with a new production of the iconic Akhnaten. Returning to ENO are the enduringly popular Barber of Seville and The Mikado (both originally directed by Jonathan Miller), and the first revival of Simon McBurney’s visually stunning production of The Magic Flute. We’re passionate about this work, and we want to make sure that it can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to see it – whether you’re trying opera for the very first time, or come to every ENO production. To that end, we’ve made some changes to our prices for the 2015/16 Season – reducing the cost of many of our seats, and ensuring that at least 500 tickets are available for £20 or less at every performance. You can also find out about other ways to save on page 32. I hope this all encourages you to explore the world of opera through the talents of this extraordinary award-winning company. We look forward to welcoming you to ENO soon.
ENO performances at the London Coliseum (except Akhnaten) are sung and surtitled in English. ENO gratefully acknowledges financial support from Arts Council England. ENO is a registered charity (no. 257210) in the UK and a 501(c)3 registered organisation in the US.

BBC Music Magazine on Mark Wigglesworth Lady Macbeth of Mstensk is a powerful work of raw emotional intensity. With themes of adultery and murder, the story follows the downfall of a bored provincial merchant’s wife who seeks solace and excitement in an extra-marital affair. With a bold and contemporary setting, this staging provides the perfect backdrop to this 20th-century opera’s unflinching approach to sex and violence. Shostakovich’s music is fast-paced and dynamic, brimming with his hallmark orchestration and unmatched gifts for biting parody.

28 September – 11 November | 10 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 50mins
The Barber of Seville will have you smiling from the moment it begins. Filled with fun and farce, this sunny adventure follows the escapades of the barber Figaro as he assists Count Almaviva to prise the beautiful yet feisty Rosina away from her lecherous guardian Dr Bartolo. Set in an elegant vision of 18th-century Seville, Jonathan Miller’s much-loved production returns to the Coliseum and remains as side-splittingly funny as ever. For this revival, the talented Christopher Allen will conduct Rossini’s sparkling score, packed full of wit and playful tunes. As Dr Bartolo, ENO favourite Andrew Shore returns in one of his signature roles, showcasing his peerless comic timing. Kathryn Rudge, a former ENO Harewood Artist, sings the role of Rosina for the first time, alongside rising baritone Morgan Pearse as Figaro. Making his ENO debut as Almaviva is Eleazar Rodriguez, a tenor who has won critical praise for his Rossini roles.

MEET MARK WIGGLESWORTH
ENO’S NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR
AS A FAN OF ENO FOR OVER THIRTY-FIVE YEARS, THE PHILOSOPHY OF THIS EXCEPTIONAL COMPANY IS VERY CLOSE TO MY HEART.
to produce operas that others never forget. It is these people that give ENO its identity beyond the work itself. Regular audience members are part of this family and newcomers feel welcome in an environment that simultaneously manages to be both spectacular and relaxed.
Opera is an equal and indivisible combination of music and drama, movement and design. It tells elemental stories through the essential simplicity and depth of the human voice. Singing in our own language not only increases opera’s power to move, challenge and excite, but also allows it to connect with as broad a public as possible. Our productions, like our audiences, express diversity, curiosity and passion, and experiencing them in London’s greatest theatre always creates thrilling and unique occasions.

ENO’S SPECTACULAR NEW STAGING OF THIS OPERA CLASSIC

Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, after Henri Murger
’
16 October – 26 November | 14 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 20mins
A brilliant new interpretation of one of opera’s most popular and unforgettable stories. The moment Mimì knocks on the door of her neighbour Rodolfo sparks the start of a journey which will take the couple – and the audience – through the full range of human emotions. From the irrepressible joy of their burgeoning love affair through to the unbearable heartbreak at their separation by death, only the stoniest of hearts could fail to be moved by this timeless story – whether you’re watching for the first or the thirty-first time. This visually stunning, contemporary new production sees the return of sought-after Australian director Benedict Andrews to ENO. His career also encompasses film and theatre, and his work was most recently seen in London with the Young Vic’s award-winning 2014 production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

The Force of Destiny is an action-packed drama of passion, war, honour and vengeance. From the opening notes of its famous overture, you’ll be drawn into Verdi’s powerful score as it follows the entwined destinies of the central characters. The youthful lovers Leonora and Alvaro have no idea that their feelings for each other will unleash a devastating chain of events as fate takes its inescapable grip on everyone’s lives.

WIT, CHARM AND CATCHY TUNES
THE MIKADO ARTHUR SULLIVAN & W. S. GILBERT 21 November – 6 February | 13 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 30mins
Almost 30 years on from its premiere, Jonathan Miller’s dazzlingly inventive staging returns to the London Coliseum for what has become for many the definitive production of this much-loved Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera. Set in an ever-so English 1930s seaside hotel, Miller’s Marx Brothers-inspired song-and-dance Mikado has long been a popular hit with audiences of all ages. The combination of Gilbert’s virtuosic wit, Sullivan’s memorable melodies and Miller’s witty antics is irresistible. A cast of youthful talent and seasoned veterans has been assembled for this revival. Distinguished bass Robert Lloyd sings the genial Mikado for the first time, 46 years after making his ENO debut, while Richard Suart, the acknowledged master of the Lord High Executioner’s pathological ‘little list’, returns as Ko-Ko. ENO Harewood Artists Mary Bevan and Anthony Gregory play the lovers Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo, while ENO Mackerras Conducting Fellow Fergus Macleod makes his company debut.

VINCENZO BELLINI

Felice Romani, after Alexandre Soumet
The Guardian
17 February – 11 March | 7 Performances | Running time: 3hrs
Norma explores the life of an enclosed community desperate to protect its beliefs in the face of unstoppable change. At the heart of this emotional rollercoaster lies the impossible love between Norma and Pollione, the father of her children and the outsider who is destroying her community’s way of life. When he betrays her love, she urges her people to rise up and fight for their freedom. Award-winning director Christopher Alden (Partenope, Rigoletto) returns to ENO for our first-ever production of Bellini’s indisputable bel canto masterpiece. Celebrated for its finely shaped melodies and exquisite arias (notably ‘Casta diva’), Norma is full of ravishing music. Alden’s critically admired production is set in the American mid-west during the late nineteenth century, in a staging described, when seen at Opera North, as ‘alive, energising and absorbing’ (Daily Telegraph). Rising star soprano Marjorie Owens, a recent Aida at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, makes her UK operatic debut in the demanding title role. Leading British tenor Peter Auty (Ramerrez in ENO’s 2014 Girl of the Golden West) plays the love-rat Pollione who cheats on Norma. Bel canto specialist Stephen Lord conducts. Norma, Opera North. Financial Times on Satyagraha
Watching Akhnaten is a thought-provoking, absorbing experience. The opera explores the life and religious convictions of the Egyptian pharaoh, and forms the last of Philip Glass’s trilogy of ‘portrait’ operas in which he explores the lives of figures in the fields of science (Einstein), politics (Gandhi) and religion (Akhnaten). This hypnotically mesmerising work uses texts drawn from ancient hymns, prayers, letters and inscriptions sung in their original Egyptian, Hebrew and Akkadian. Its UK premiere was at ENO in 1985, and it has not been seen in London for almost 30 years. Our new production brings this seminal work to a new generation of operagoers, and at the same time celebrates ENO’s close relationship with one of contemporary music’s leading composers.
Conductor Karen Kamensek Director Phelim McDermott Set Designer Tom Pye Cast includes Akhnaten Anthony Roth Costanzo
Following the success of his ENO productions of Glass’s Satyagraha and The Perfect American, Improbable’s Phelim McDermott returns to direct Akhnaten with the theatrical flair that characterises all of his work. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo sings the challenging title role for the first time, following his well-received performances at the London Coliseum in The Indian Queen, while conductor Karen Kamensek, Music Director of Hannover’s Staatstheater and a specialist in Glass’s music, makes her ENO debut.

WAYS TO SAVE ENO offers brilliant opera experiences at a price you can afford. At least 500 tickets at every performance are £20 or under. But there are plenty of other ways to save – find the right offer to suit your need from the options below.
At least 50 Secret Seats are available at every performance. Buy a £20 unallocated seat in advance and be guaranteed a seat worth £30 or more on the night. Some seats will always be in the Stalls and Dress Circle. Who knows, it might be yours.
ACCESS ALL ARIAS Choose this if you: are a full-time student or under 30. Benefit from significant reductions, including £30 for seats in the Stalls and £10 in the Upper Circle. Members can book two tickets per production at these rates once registered on the scheme. You can join online at eno.org/aaa. Please note that you will be asked to show relevant ID for proof of age/student status when collecting your tickets.
These tickets are only available online – find out more at eno.org/secretseat
Existing members can purchase tickets from 27 May by calling 020 7845 9300.
Loved the Secret Seats! I paid £20 for our tickets, and ended up in the front row of the Dress Circle – amazing!
I have seen some more unusual productions on the premise that it’s cheap and I’ll be in good seats... I love the fact that you can take a friend as well
GROUPS Choose this if you: are planning on attending with at least nine other people. Groups of 10+ can save 30% on selected performance and ticket prices. For further information call 020 7845 9300 or email groupsales@eno.org
