ENO HAREWOOD ARTISTS The commitment to nurturing new opera talent is a vital part of our work. ENO Harewood Artists provides training and support for singers at the beginning of their professional careers, giving them an opportunity to develop and learn as they take on roles. The carefully-structured programme of training includes vocal and language coaching, work with distinguished exponents of their repertoire and access to a performance psychologist. The programme forges long-term links between the artists and ENO, with members developing international careers whilst remaining close to the company. Supporters of ENO Harewood Artists have the opportunity to become an important part of the singers’ careers, experiencing their development and progress through invitations to a series of recitals. From deciding repertoire to casting principle performers, the Music Director helps to drive forward the company musically and plays a vital part in ENO’s activities and mission to produce new, exciting and distinctive opera. This season marks the last year in current Music Director Edward Gardner’s incredibly successful tenure, which ends July 2015. From September 2015, we are delighted to be joined by our new Music Director Mark Wigglesworth. Supported by the English Opera Group and a special production support syndicate. Devised and directed by Director in Residence Peter Sellars, the rich and transcendent score of Purcell’s final unfinished opera is reworked for a new co-production with Perm State Opera and Teatro Real, Madrid. The new retelling recounts the initial confrontation between Europeans and the Mayans of the New World through a personal account from the female perspective, which Sellars has based on The Lost Chronicles of Terra Firma by Nicaraguan author Rosario Aguilar. Led by baroque specialist Laurence Cummings this new production is set to the stunning backdrop of set designs from LA-based graffiti artist, Gronk and stars exceptional young soprano Julia Bullock, for whom Sellars created the role, and leading British lyric soprano Lucy Crowe.

The English Opera Group was founded to support our continuing commitment to produce world-class English-language opera and to celebrate operas originally written in English. This year members are supporting The Indian Queen. Members enjoy special access to the cast and creative team behind supported operas and an invitation to an annual recital of English opera music.
To enable this very special work to be presented, we have also formed a specific group of supporters to invest in the production to ensure its success. In 2015, ENO is joining forces with celebrated film director and Gilbert & Sullivan aficionado Mike Leigh, making his opera debut, to bring a new production of the well-loved classic The Pirates of Penzance to the London Coliseum. With 19 performances and over 45,000 tickets available, this will be one of the most widely seen operas of the year.
