WHAT’S ON SPRING SUMMER 2015

WELCOME

TO ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA The eight productions you can read about in this brochure embrace over 300 years of opera: from a new staging of Purcell’s The Indian Queen, to the most recent addition to the repertoire in the shape of the world premiere of Tansy Davies’s eagerly anticipated first opera, Between Worlds, which will be staged at the Barbican Theatre in a production by Deborah Warner. I’m delighted that the company will be working with so many talented and visionary directors across the Spring and Summer seasons. Wagner’s The Mastersingers of Nuremberg will be a major company event, directed by the ever-inventive Richard Jones as he celebrates 25 years of working at ENO. We welcome the legendary American director Peter Sellars, who stages his reworking of Purcell’s rarely seen The Indian Queen, and I’m thrilled that Mike Leigh, a well-known aficionado of G&S and of course celebrated worldwide for his awardwinning films, will make his operatic debut at ENO with a new production of The Pirates of Penzance. To close the season, we welcome back David Alden for a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Pushkin-inspired The Queen of Spades, which promises to be a spectacular showcase for the ENO Orchestra under Edward Gardner in his final project as ENO Music Director. Together with revivals of our well-received productions of La traviata and Carmen, and performances from company favourites such as Iain Paterson, Andrew Shore and Felicity Palmer, 2015 will be an exciting year for ENO. In March, Sondheim’s brilliant Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will launch our new partnership to bring the best of musical theatre to ENO. This imaginatively conceived semi-staged production (although ‘semi-staged’ hardly does justice to the theatrical experience) stars Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson, and was a ‘must-see’ event when it was first given in New York in 2014. I have no doubt it will be just as compelling at ENO. I look forward to welcoming you to ENO soon.

THE MASTERSINGERS OF NUREMBERG RICHARD WAGNER Richard Wagner after various historical and literary sources 7 February – 10 March | 8 Performances | Running time: 5hrs 40mins

ENO’s first new production of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg since 1984 will be a significant event. From the ever-popular overture’s magisterial opening bars, Wagner’s score is conceived on a truly epic scale and is full of glorious melodies, stirring choruses and thrilling orchestration, which reveal the composer at the height of his powers. It will be a major company ensemble piece of the first order.

Conductor Edward Gardner

Originally created for WNO, Richard Jones’s spectacular staging of Mastersingers is brought to London for the first time. Jones provides a characteristically witty and clear retelling of Wagner’s drama about the 16th-century guild of amateur poets and musicians (the Mastersingers), in which the tension between creativity and conformity is played out in a society obsessed with rules and regulations.

Choreographer Lucy Burge

An exceptional cast has been assembled under ENO Music Director Edward Gardner. Leading Wagnerian bass-baritone Iain Paterson sings his first Sachs, following on from his success as Wotan at the 2013 BBC Proms, while the brilliant singing-actor Andrew Shore, whose ENO triumphs range from Donizetti to Britten, makes his stage role debut as Beckmesser. ENO favourite Gwyn Hughes Jones sings Walter. Feb 7, 14, 21 & Mar 7 at 3pm Feb 18, 25 & Mar 3, 10 at 5pm

Peter Konwitschny lays bare the emotional truths of Verdi’s opera

LA TRAVIATA GIUSEPPE VERDI Francesco Maria Piave after Alexandre Dumas fils 9 February – 13 March | 9 Performances | Running time: 1hr 50mins

La traviata remains one of Verdi’s most popular and emotionally engaging works, with a wealth of instantly recognisable melodies that have delighted audiences since its 1853 premiere.

Conductor Roland Böer Director Peter Konwitschny

Internationally renowned opera and theatre director Peter Konwitschny’s production was showered with praise from both critics and audiences when it launched the UK’s Verdi bicentenary celebrations at ENO in 2013. Nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production, his reading takes us on an unforgettable musical and theatrical journey. Concentrating on the narrative’s essential themes, this production, in which some music is cut and which plays without an interval, brings the essence of the drama into the sharpest possible focus. It is an ideal production for newcomers to opera, and also provides a fresh perspective for those who already know this popular work well.

Designer Johannes Leiacker Lighting Designer Joachim Klein Translator Martin Fitzpatrick Cast includes Violetta Elizabeth Zharoff Alfredo Ben Johnson Germont Anthony Michaels-Moore Flora Clare Presland Gaston Paul Hopwood

Returning to the London Coliseum for the first revival of this unique production are ENO Harewood Artist Ben Johnson as Alfredo and acclaimed baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore as Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont. ENO launches a major star with the UK debut of soprano Elizabeth Zharoff as Violetta – the one character in Konwitschny’s staging who never fails to behave with compassion and love.

A RICH AND DYNAMIC NEW STAGING

THE INDIAN QUEEN HENRY PURCELL John Dryden A new version by Peter Sellars Songs and hymns by Purcell, with texts by Katherine Philips, George Herbert et al. Spoken texts by Rosario Aguilar from The Lost Chronicles of Terra Firma 26 February – 14 March | 8 Performances | Running time: 3hrs 40mins

Acclaimed director Peter Sellars presents a newly contextualised version of Purcell’s The Indian Queen, which promises to be as significant a musical occasion as it will be a theatrical experience. Sellars takes Purcell’s final, rich, transcendent incomplete score and incorporates some of the composer’s most ravishing sacred and secular pieces, adding vibrant set designs from graffiti artist Gronk and a text based on Nicaraguan author Rosario Aguilar’s novel The Lost Chronicles of Terra Firma. The result is a spectacle of music, theatre, dance, literature and visual art that describes the first contact between Europeans and the Mayans of the New World from the perspective of the women who forged a new society. The musical team is led by baroque specialist Laurence Cummings, artistic director of major early music festivals in Britain and Germany. With an integral contribution from the ENO Chorus, the cast includes Julia Bullock, the exceptional young soprano who garnered widespread praise in the role of Teculihuatzin in Madrid in 2013, and leading British lyric soprano Lucy Crowe, who is now in demand all over the world following her stunning performance in ENO’s Agrippina in 2007. SONDHEIM’S GLORIOUSLY GRUESOME MUSICAL

SWEENEY TODD:

THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET

STEPHEN SONDHEIM Stephen Sondheim after the book by Hugh Wheeler, based on Christopher Bond’s play 30 March – 12 April | 13 Performances | Running time: 3hrs What is the special ingredient that makes Mrs Lovett’s meat pies so irresistibly delicious? Following their acclaimed performances in the sell-out concert staging at New York’s Lincoln Center in 2014, international operatic superstar Bryn Terfel and multi Academy Award and BAFTA winning actress Emma Thompson reassume the roles of Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett. The macabre truth of the pies lies at the heart of Sweeney Todd in the uneasy alliance between baker and barber. Wrongly imprisoned, Sweeney Todd is obsessed by the desire to take revenge on the judge who raped his young wife, imprisoned him on false charges, and has now claimed his daughter as his ward. The despicable judge eventually finds himself at the sharp end of the barber’s summary justice – but not without Todd sustaining some unintended collateral damage.

WORLD PREMIERE

BETWEEN WORLDS TANSY DAVIES Nick Drake World premiere performed at the Barbican 11 April – 25 April | 8 Performances | Running time: 1hr 30mins

Critically acclaimed opera and theatre director Deborah Warner returns to ENO and the Barbican, following her recent productions of Death in Venice (London Coliseum) and The Testament of Mary (Barbican Theatre), for the world premiere of Between Worlds, an ENO/Barbican co-commission from innovative British composer Tansy Davies and librettist Nick Drake. Tansy Davies’s highly anticipated first opera is a sensitive, spiritual and uplifting journey inspired by the events of 9/11. A disparate group of individuals is trapped high up in one of the Twin Towers, caught between earth and heaven, between life and death. Davies’s work has been commissioned and performed by many significant international ensembles and orchestras. Her distinctive sound-world combines unrestrained exuberance with emotional depth, and has been described as possessing a ‘rare power to remind its listeners of their own inner freedom’ (Guardian). Contemporary music specialist Gerry Cornelius conducts a cast that includes ENO favourite Susan Bickley and counter-tenor Andrew Watts, together with ENO Harewood Artist Rhian Lois and mezzo-soprano Clare Presland.

SPARKLING TUNES AND WITTY WORDS

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE ARTHUR SULLIVAN W. S. Gilbert 9 May – 27 June | 14 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 20mins

Renowned auteur Mike Leigh makes his operatic directing debut with this eagerly awaited new production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most popular comic opera. Humour will be plentiful, the satire razor-sharp, and the lampooning of the Establishment good-natured. The combination of team G&S and Leigh’s direction, following on from his BAFTA-winning Topsy-Turvy and the recent Mr Turner, together with the sparkling conducting of David Parry, promises a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.

Conductor David Parry Director Mike Leigh Designer Alison Chitty Lighting Designer Paul Pyant Choreographer Francesca Jaynes

The Pirates of Penzance turns on numerous unlikely twists in the plot, with improbable paradoxes, sentimental pirates and blundering policemen. The score is chock-full of memorable melodies, from the Major-General’s tongue-twisting patter song with its cornucopia of useless information, to his daughter Mabel’s sparkling ‘Poor wandering one’ and the cowardly Police Sergeant’s number with its famous punchline, ‘A policeman’s lot is not a happy one’.

With stylish designs from Alison Chitty, this vibrant staging features a cast headed by the ever-versatile Andrew Shore as the very model of a modern Major-General, Jonathan Lemalu as the affectionate parody of the British bobby, Robert Murray as the innocent pirate-apprentice Frederic, and Rebecca de Pont Davies as the older woman who has designs on him. CARMEN GEORGES BIZET Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy after Prosper Mérimée 20 May – 3 July | 14 Performances | Running time: 2hrs 45mins

No other opera boasts as popular a following as Carmen. The tragic demise of the once respectable Don José as he falls under the irresistible spell of the sexy, streetwise Carmen has long transfixed audiences. Bizet’s dazzling score evokes all the sounds and sizzling atmosphere of Spain in some of the most famous melodies in the operatic repertory, from Carmen’s seductive ‘Habanera’ to the Toreadors’ stirring parade and José’s passionate ‘Flower Song’. Enjoyed by audiences across Europe, Calixto Bieito’s visually striking production is set in the dying days of Franco’s Spain and offers a powerful combination of love, lust and betrayal against the symbolic backdrop of the bullring. Calixto Bieito returns to ENO to direct the company’s first revival of his production. Leading the cast is the sensational mezzo-soprano Justina Gringyte, who makes her role debut alongside the internationally acclaimed tenor Eric Cutler as José. ENO Harewood Artist Eleanor Dennis sings her first Micaëla, José’s ever-loyal ex-girlfriend, with Leigh Melrose as the toreador Escamillo. In Tchaikovsky’s powerfully dark masterpiece, an aged Countess possesses the secret of winning infallibly at cards. An impoverished army officer, hearing of her remarkable power, resolves to wrest it from her at any price – even death. Based on a short story by Pushkin, Tchaikovsky’s opera about avarice and obsession is full of the soaring melodies and sumptuous orchestration you’d expect from the composer of Eugene Onegin, here allied to a mastery of the grotesque.
