THE ENO CLASSIC RETURNS

OTELLO

XERXES

VERDI

HANDEL

Shakespeare’s dramatic story of deception, love and jealousy sees army general Otello and his new wife Desdemona destroyed by the manipulative Captain Iago. It is vividly brought to life through Verdi’s exquisite score which contains some of the composer’s most powerful and tender music.

Nicholas Hytner’s Olivier Award-winning production returns. Centring on the rivalry between Xerxes and his brother Arsamenes, Handel’s comic masterpiece mixes humour, sexuality and seething emotions. With dazzling music and soaring singing, Xerxes is an enthralling night of fun, joy and biting social satire.

PUCCINI’S AMERICAN OPERA

THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST PUCCINI

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO MOZART

Set in the American Wild West during the Californian gold rush, the opera follows the lives of saloonbar owner Minnie and a community of miners who struggle to cope with the harsh realities of their bleak environment. Puccini’s score is renowned for its lyrical beauty, soaring melodies and ambitious orchestration.

The Marriage of Figaro whisks us through the events of one crazy day as Figaro, the Count’s valet, tries to wed Susanna, the Countess’s maid, before their philandering master can bed her first. Filled with some of Mozart’s most enjoyable music, it is widely considered to be the greatest comic opera ever written.

Acclaimed director Peter Sellars returns to ENO to stage this significant new production. The world stage premiere of the latest dramatic work from John Adams provides a fresh interpretation of the Passion story from the perspective of Mary Magdalene and her sister Martha. ‘An extraordinary work’ New York Times

A FRESH TAKE ON A CLASSIC

NUTCRACKER

VERDI A heartrending tale of society and morality, Verdi’s masterpiece combines compelling characters with hugely powerful and instantly recognisable melodies. This highly-praised production cuts to the very heart of the opera’s themes of passionate love and tragic death with a modern and uncluttered staging, and a running time of less than two hours. 9 Feb – 13 Mar Cameras present for ENO Screen live cinema relay on 5 & 11 Mar Co-production Opera Graz, Austria. Original Production supported by the English National Opera Trust.

Journey back in time with English National Ballet to a frost-covered, gas-lit London and join Clara, her Nutcracker doll and the magician Drosselmeyer in this traditional, festive tale for all the family. In a world of Edwardian elegance, Nutcracker brings to life the eternally popular Tchaikovsky score featuring the ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ and ‘Waltz of the Flowers’. This classical production is a magical, memorable and unmissable Christmas treat. 11 Dec – 4 Jan | Tickets £10 – £79* Photo: Sîan Trenberth Photo: Sîan Trenberth

A RICH AND DYNAMIC NEW STAGING

THE INDIAN QUEEN PURCELL A stunning spectacle of music, theatre, dance, literature and visual art. In this vibrant new staging, devised by Peter Sellars, Purcell’s magnificent but unfinished opera is reworked around a new text and the inclusion of several of Purcell’s most sacred songs to describe the first contact between Europeans and the Mayans of the New World.

SWAN LAKE English National Ballet’s acclaimed production of Swan Lake provides an unforgettable experience of romance and drama. Perhaps the most famous of all ballets, it tells the story of Prince Siegfried’s love for the Swan Queen, Odette, and their battle against the evil magician, Rothbart.
