Symop meets Moroccan papermakers On 11 November, Symop organized its latest Seminar in Rabat. An opportunity for its members to introduce their technologies to Moroccan papermakers.

nly just a year after Indonesia, it was Morocco, and its capital Rabat, that the members of Symop1 (French association for manufacturing technologies) choose for the setting, in November, of its Seminar to present their latest technologies. On opening the day, Philippe Baudry, Minister Counsellor for Economic Affairs and head of the regional economic service at the French Embassy in Morocco, highlighted how paper industry MR TEVXMGYPEV VI¾IGXIH XLI QENSV GLEPPIRKIW facing the country : sustainable management of resources (raw materials, recycling and energy, which remain expensive), new technologies to increase productivity and commercial integration with the search for new markets and increased competitiveness. He also noted that « the European Union is the leading supplier for Morocco, as well as its leading customer and… its leading competitor in the paper sector. »

Mounir El Bari, President of Fifage2, said that per capita consumption in Morocco was approximately 15 kg/year (compared with over 200 kg in Europe). There are some 34 million inhabitants in Morocco who consume approximately 500,000 t of paper & board a year in the following proportions : Corrugated case material
(CCM, 220,000 t), printing & writing paper (130,000 t), chipboard & duplex (50,000 t), newsprint & publication papers (45,000 t), packaging papers (40,000 t) and sanitary & household papers (15,000 t). As this data has not been recently updated it should be treated with care. According to another fairly old study (dating Only 140,000 t back to 2007), one of paper & board is of the weak points recovered each of the paper sector year in Morocco. is the lack collection and recycling facilities. Thus with annual paper consumption running at around 500,000 t/year and recycled ½FVI RIIHW IWXMQEXIH EX X SRP] 140,000 t of paper & board is recovered each year (including 20,000 t/year of captive production waste). This is a collection rate of around 30 %. Mounir El Bari called for the industrialisation of this sector, with the creation of effective logistics. The dealers in such a system would be considered as being key players, with an acknowledged status.The number of intermediaries would be reduced in order to prevent the loss of added-value. Other measures he would like to see include : the use of bale presses, the optimisation of storage (1 tonne bales, instead of the current 100 kg) and of picking (increased collection rounds, development of personal protective equipment,

On the eve of the conference, Charafa Chebani, Director of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry Pole in Morocco (Ubifrance) presented the key indicators for the country to the member companies of Symop, together with an outline of its relations with its leading trading partners. In 2013, the GDP of Morocco was €77.9 billion (€2,372 per capita) and XLI VEXI SJ KVS[XL [EW MR 2012). Taking into In 2013, total trade account imports, amounted to €50.4 exports and foreign billion. Whilst FDI from China and India is still at a low level, the country is seen as an important staging post for other markets, and in particular Sub-Saharan Africa. According to Charafa Chebani, « French industry needs to “sell itself ” better. Their products are often seen as good quality but expensive compared to those from Italy, Spain

or Turkey. In addition, Moroccan operators are looking for know-how, long-term partnerships and a genuine commitment to working together. » Regular human contact is also strongly recommended and highly appreciated. In turn, Mounir El Bari pointed to a number of sector focussed plans, in particular in agri-business, implemented in recent years that had not integrated the packaging component and/or had favoured foreign producers. Daniel Gomez (Atip) then explained the key role played by this association in transferring technological know-how within the French paper industry as well as presenting key data for the sector. Gérard Mortha (Grenoble INP-Pagora), then presented the school, founded in 1907 and a member of the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (Université Grenoble-Alpes). They were followed by representatives of the constructors, offering practical solutions and working examples. Z Ludovic Veyre (Kadant Lamort) ½VWX SJ all highlighted the challenges facing papermakers : shortages of good quality raw materials, increased rate of contamination in the pulper, reductions in the base weight of paper & board (which must nevertheless retain its mechanical characteristics) and reduced water and energy use. By way of solutions for these issues, Kadant Lamort can offer several new products : the Continuous Detrasher (OCC) line, Approach Flow WXVEXM½GEXMSR Radiclone AM 80, Periscreen-M and Radiscreen-M), process water recovery (Roto¾I\), as well as continuous cleaning of dryer fabrics (MultiJet Twin S). n 2014, the Seine axis ports, operating within the Haropa alliance, recorded total shipments of forestry and paper industry products of approximately 470,000 t, the vast majority being imports. This represented a 10 % increase on 2013 (427,000 t). One noticeable trend is the increasing â&#x20AC;&#x153;containerisationâ&#x20AC;? of products (wood chips, logs, exotic wood, wood pellets, framework, square cut wood as well as paper and board). Thus, last year, the Port of Rouen handled 23,526 t of â&#x20AC;&#x153;containerisedâ&#x20AC;? forestry products (+ 5.9 %).

The wood handled in Rouen comes for the most part from Finland (67,492 t) and Russia (30,983 t). In this segment, the arrival of Latvia (4,348 t), is worthy of note, whilst Lithuania, already present, tripled its tonnages compared with 2013, at 13,039 t. The leading products handled were square cut wood (116,637 t), followed by chips (58,818 t). Rouen continued to receive wood shipments from Brazil, with services operated by Marfret and CMA-CGM from BelĂŠm (Para State). At the end of last decade, the warehouses in the Rouen VallĂŠe de Seine Logistique (RVSL) area were

mostly handling Brazilian tropical wood shipments intended for the French market (rotating stocks of 20,000 to 25,000 m3). 2015 PROJECTS
Among the projects for this year is the one involving Double A, owner of the Alizay paper mill since the beginning of 2013, (cf. pg. X). Further feasibility studies are under way on other supply logistics projects in the “Pellets” and “Chips” segments, plenty of grounds for optimism at Haropa for the coming years. In addition, the ports on the Seine axis are involved in a feasibility study on the Appreaubois project, which aims to supply biomass plants in Ile-de-France using the river system, a highly interesting alternative from both an environmental and an economic point of view. According to the management team at Haropa, « The forestry and paper industry products sector retains a strong presence at the terminals operated by ,EVSTE XLI PIEHMRK *VIRGL TSVX MR XLMW ½IPH XLEROW XS MXW WMKRM½GERX WLMTTMRK GETEGMXMIW both containerised and conventional. Pulp DOUBLE A ALIZAY PULP PRODUCTION SET TO START MID-MAY 2016 ; HAROPA IS INVOLVED During the meeting of the Standing Committee held on 9 February, the elected members approved the sale of the second section of the former M-real site to Double A and Haropa Port de Rouen. Back in January 2013, the Département de l’Eure purchased this site from the Finnish papermaker M-real, now called Metsä Board. Following its sale of the paper machine to Double A, the Département is continuing with its development plans for the industrial site, which involved negotiations with Double A and Port de Rouen. These are now complete and will enable : Z The launch of a bio-generation plant that comes within the scope on the Energy Transition Law (LTE). The production of IRIVK] SR XLI WMXI [MPP IREFPI (SYFPI % XS MQTVSZI MXW TVS½XEFMlity and ensure the future for the operation, Z The restarting of the pulp mill. The pulp currently shipped from Thailand will eventually be produced in Alizay, as of midMay 2016, Z The creation of a public river dock facility, with an annual capacity of 2.5 million m3 a year, capable of supplying Double A with its raw materials and handling local quarry shipments.This is one of the largest bulk contracts on the Seine River. Estimated at €4 M, this platform will be operational at the beginning of 2016. To ensure that these project can be implemented, the property is being sold for : Z €4,227,000 to the subsidiary company Double A Holdings Limited (purchase of approximately 46 ha), Z €227,000 to Port de Rouen (purchase of the port area of approximately 4 ha). Since Double A arrived, 306 jobs have been created (176 direct and 130 by subcontractors). Eventually, the site will employ more people than it did prior to its closure by M-real. In 2015, Double A Alizay is expecting total output to be between 220,000 and 270,000 t. Last July, the mill started production of the Evolve FVERH EKEMR MXW VIG]GPIH SJ½GI TETIV « initial sales of which are promising », says Thirawit Leetavorn, Senior Executive Vice President of Double A.

Port de Sète Sud de France CENIBRA PROVIDES BOOST TO PULP IMPORTS In 2014, the Port de Sète Sud de France was the destination for 15 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pulpâ&#x20AC;? ship calls, with a total of 80,000 t, from a new customer as of January 2014, Cenibra, which ships its pulp from Chile. The future of pulp imports looks promising thanks to what the port can offer in this regard (location, deep water access, multimodality, specialist port facilities, warehousing, etc.).
