T

he United Arab Emirates (UAE) paper industry continues to be vibrant. The country witnesses an incomparable economic growth translated among others by an increase in the consumption of paper. Production and printing of paper is generally done through the UAE to be exported to the whole Arab countries to fulfill the need of the increasing demand on manufacturing paper grades. The paper conversion sector is also witnessing a boom, producing all major paper products from paper to tissue and cardboard that grows in becoming a high necessity. Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the main cities in the UAE, are acquiring a high reputation and a leading position among other Gulf cities; mainly due to their cost effectiveness system and their geographical position assuring a speed delivery with high performance. In this issue of Paper Middleast magazine, we will focus on the activity of Union Paper Mills (UPM) that manufactures packaging grades of paper. The mill has 2 machines working in Dubai displaying the latest technologies producing high quality of Fluting and Testliner. Although production capacity of Containerboard in the UAE is high but the paper industry market is growing tremendously and at a rapid pace. Corrugated paper is being used for new patterns and flexible packaging is witnessing high demands. As a result, new products and higher production capacity are being required to answer the market demand. Following this fact, UPM management planned to increase their export to neighboring countries on the strength of their advanced world class machineries used in the production process. In order to fulfill the market need, they invested in a third machine that will be installed in Abu Dhabi. We will look in the following pages to Union Paper Mills and their actual manufacturing lines. A focus will be dedicated also to their new project mill in Abu Dhabi, and their PM3 on which production is expected to be started in 2016.

>> Union Paper Mills (UAE)

One of the major suppliers of Containerboard in the MENA region, UPM on the light!

U

nion Paper Mills was established in1987 by MAHY KHOORY GROUP, a limited liability company whose inception goes back to the late 1920s or early 1930s of the last century. Union Paper Mills (UPM) is the sister company of MAHY Khoory & Co, Al Khoory Engineering, Greenland Transport, Pearl Marina, Clean Earth etc. and is located at Al Quoz Industrial Area, No.1 Dubai; UAE.

The mill covers an area of one million square feet to manufacture packaging grades of paper i.e. the containerboard paper required for production of corrugated cartons. The setting of this project by UPM brought in for the first time the paper recycling technology in the UAE to fulfill the growing local needs for different grades of paper. 14 papermiddleast

Union Paper Mills commenced its manufacturing activity in 1988 by producing Fluting & Test Liner required by the local as well as GCC’s box plants along with unbleached Core Board for production of Core pipes. Subsequently, the production of White Top Test Liner was also undertaken. The mill has two paper machines i.e. PM1 and PM2. PM1 produces Fluting, Testliner and unbleached Core board using 100% recycled paper. This machine runs at 250 m/min speed having a wire width of 2.8 meters and pope reel width of 2.55 M. The production capacity reaches 100 tons per day with a basis weight ranging from 112 to 400 GSM. To be in line with the group’s philosophy of continuous growth, UPM embarked upon its expansion plan in 2003 to keep pace with the growing demand of Container board paper in the Gulf and MENA region. Accordingly investment was made to set up a second paper machine (PM 2). The production on this machine commenced in May 2005 and the increased demand in the growing markets in GCC and other Arab Countries were catered to since then. On PM2, UPM produces Fluting and Test Liner paper using 100% waste paper. Subsequently the production of White Top Test Liner was also undertaken using virgin pulp as well as waste paper. The PM2 initially had capacity to

produce 300 T of paper per day running at 450 meter / minute. This machine was upgraded in 2012 to increase the speed of the machine to 600 meters / minute to produce 400 Tons per day of paper in the substance range of 105 to 200 GSM. It is worth mentioning that PM2 was the first installed machine to produce White Top TestLiner in the United Arab Emirates. PM1and PM2 machine details in figures: PM 1

As mentioned above, UPM produces paper using 100% waste paper and the demand of waste paper could be as high as 600 tons per day. In order to cater to this huge demand of paper the company had set up a waste paper yard near the mill capable of sorting, baling and supplying around 500 tons of waste paper per day to the Mill. The use of waste paper for the production of finished paper by UPM is in line with the UAE’s commitment towards the environment. The demand for corrugated boxes in the MENA region is growing at the rate of around 5% (CAGR) per annum. As a result, there is going to be increase in demand for container board paper within this region. To cater to this rapidly growing demand, UPM

has now decided to set up one more paper machine (PM 3) in ICAD 3 in Abu Dhabi and this machine which has got a deckle width of 4.85cm is capable of producing 600 tons of paper per day in substance range of 90 to 200 GSM. This project is costing around AED 480 Million (around 130 Million US Dollars). This new paper mill will be operating in the name of Al Dhafra Paper Manufacturing Company LLC, UAE.

Bellmer supply also includes the size press from Germany / Finland as well as the three under the machine pulpers that form an essential part of the order. The package also comprises the modernization of hood technology, a new heat recovery system as well as the size preparation unit. The new paper mill is scheduled to start production in the second quarter of 2016. The work is already in advanced stage. UPM is among the largest paper mills in the UAE, and the company is a major player in the supply of Container Board Paper in the Middle Eastern and North African regions.

The PM 3 being installed is a second hand single ply machine and is being upgraded by Bellmer Vaahto. Bellmer Vaahto’s scope of supply in upgrading PM3 includes equipment for approach ow, head box, upgrade of the wire section and supply of two new dryer groups to increase the drying capacity of the machine.

Contaminant removal : Why the innovative FiberWall™ screen cylinder, is your best choice ? Alain Lascar Kadant Lamort SAS Frédéric Vaulot Kadant Lamort SAS Daniel Parenteau Kadant Black Clawson Inc.

Executive summary Kadant investigated the screening capabilities of latest generation cylinders offered by major equipment suppliers and evaluated the screening performance of these screen cylinders, including the FibreWall™ screen cylinder. Initial field results of the 4th generation screening cylinders are promising and suggest that the generally accepted screening limits can be extended to smaller stickies sizes. The FibreWall™ screen cylinder is a fabricated wedge wire cylinder made without structural welding or rolling processes.

other wedge wire cylinders operating under similar conditions.

Introduction When examining the efficiency of a screen, one of the first items to consider is the contaminant nature. Large, three-dimensional contaminants of approximately the same size, such as hot melt particles, stickies and shives, are readily removed by slotted screens if their size is larger than the slot size. Flexible and flat contaminants, where one dimension is much smaller than the other two dimensions, are more complex as the smaller dimension is equal to the fiber thickness and easily subject to passing through slots, even those smaller than 0.15 mm, along with the fiber.

Based on field trials and numerous installations, screening efficiencies achieved by FibreWall™ screen cylinders outperformed major competitive cylinders on removing debris and deformable contaminants (e.g., stickies). FibreWall™ screen cylinders have been shown to reduce the stickies level by two to four times compared to

Data was collected from deinking lines using various stock and equipment from major suppliers. The benchmarking study results showed that particles larger than O.8 mm2 were removed while smaller particles were not removed. Depending on the DIP line benchmarked by CTP, 80 to 90 percent of the total stickies were observed smaller than 0.8 mm2. In addition, it was found that stickies in the final DIP stock papermiddleast 17

were mainly composed of PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive), and higher contamination was found in mills using wood-free raw material, most likely due to higher PSA content in the raw material.

An evolution of screening cylinder technology Fine screening technology is relatively mature and is characterized by the common use of wedge wire cylinders with slots between 0.12 mm and 0.15 mm, low-profile contour wire, and a low-energy rotor. Considering this industry standard approach toward fine screening and the findings from the CTP benchmarking study, an important conclusion was that ministickies are not effectively removed using conventional screen cylinders. To address these limitations, innovative work was underway to introduce a new wedge wire cylinder without structural welding or rolling processes.

ping is made mechanically using an innovative process that eliminates welding and other processes that can permanently deform the cylinder shape. The cylinder is not rolled and offers excellent roundness with no distortion. This allows for a uniform gap between the cylinder and the rotor to achieve optimum screening performance. The cylinder also offers dimensional stability over time due to the absence of residual stress caused by welding and rolling processes. FiberWall™ has then also a very high accuracy in slots with as shown in table above. Manufacturer FibreWall basket Other advanced Wedgewire

FibreWall™ screen cylinder field tests

As one of the first applications for FibreWall™ screen cylinders, Kadant targeted DIP fine screening systems for tissue production. After several tests in different mills, the following details summarize the tissue mill experiences.

A new generation high selectivity, advanced engineered cylinder was introduced in 2006 by Filtration FibreWall Inc. This concept was developed over several years and then further refined when Kadant acquired the company in 2010. The FibreWall™ screen cylinder is a fabricated wedge wire cylinder made without structural welding or rolling processes. The wire clam18 papermiddleast

Conclusions

Fig. 2. Stickies Removal Efficiency for ministickies (Class 1 to 4)

Results have been compiled for stickies greater than 0.8 mm2 (i.e., macrostickies), and for those which are smaller referred to as ministickies. To evaluate fiber passage capacity, fine screening system fiber losses have also been reported. Fiber is considered as what is retained on a 100 mesh Bauer-McNett classifier.

As presented in this paper, FibreWall™ screen cylinder is more efficient at removing smaller stickies than competitive offerings and has pushed the limit known on ministickies elimination with fine screening with slots. FibreWall™ is a wedge wire cylinder designed to achieve high screening efficiency for deinked, brown recycled fiber, chemical, and mechanical pulp applications. Its patent-pending design combines a robust mechanical assembly with a high-precision wire positioning system ensuring the smallest slot width deviation on the market. As a result, the accuracy of the cylinder provides maximum efficiency in any application with any type of debris. The strength of the cylinder allows the installation of the FibreWall™ cylinder in any commercially available screen, even on those with demanding mechanical requirements.

Most consumers describe themselves as eco-conscious, but a large percentage fails to carry this through at the point of purchase. This attitude can be altered by generating more awareness about the short and long term benefits of using sustainable products.” Generating awareness about caring for the environment runs deep at Paperworld Middle East, as underlined by the brand new Paperworld Recycling Competition that highlights the importance of recycling in schools and promotes the sustainable use of stationery.

Al Gurg Stationery, another UAE powerhouse and regular exhibitor, will showcase its latest products from popular brands such as Perfekt, Edding, Durable, Elba and 3M. Abdulla Al Gurg, Group General Manager of Al Gurg Stationery, said: “The ability to adjust to changing markets and find product niches will ensure that the paper industry stays relevant in the age of fast-changing technology.” “Being environmentally friendly, with a range of specialty products is the way forward and one that Al Gurg Stationery has adapted through years of experience and expertise.” Singapore-based Grandluxe is another exhibitor launching its range of Forest Stewardship Council certified Ecowise Note Books and Diaries at Paperworld Middle East’s dedicated Green Office Area. The eco-friendly pads are made with recycled kraft board and recycled white paper with 30 to 60 per cent post-consumer waste, and printed with vegetable oil inks. James Quan, Sales and Marketing Director at

The competition features 20 recycled projects made from used paper and stationery items, highlighting the immense potential of recycling in everyday situations. The 20 projects were shortlisted from 169 schools across Dubai, with the ultimate winners to be decided by popular vote from trade visitors at Paperworld Middle East. Other features of Paperworld Middle East include the Green Office Area, a dedicated section that showcases sustainably produced essential office supplies; Playworld, presenting regional trade buyers with the world of kids’ toys, games, and children’s lifestyle products; and Wrap Star - the region’s only gift wrapping competition, giving employees at regional retail outlets and malls a chance to showcase their gift wrapping skills to a global audience. papermiddleast 21

International Environment Council: IEC meeting provides instant feedback on important COPs Recent BIR World Recycling Convention & Exhibition in Dubai (17 - 20 May 2015)

T

he Dubai meeting of the BIR’s International Environment Council (IEC) on May 18 took place in the immediate aftermath of key Conferences of the Parties (COPs) in Geneva covering the United Nations’ Rotterdam, Stockholm and Basel Conventions. The first of these deals with prior informed consent in the movement of chemicals, the second looks to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and the third concerns the transboundary movement of hazardous and other waste. The Stockholm and Basel Conventions have potentially profound implications for the recycling industry. Offering a first-hand review of developments in Geneva, BIR’s Trade & Environment Director Ross Bartley described the “quite dramatic” scenes in Geneva during the Stockholm Convention’s first-ever vote to list a POP, namely pentachlorophenol or PCP. “It shows how important these issues are to the majority

of countries,” he said. There were 90 countries in favour of the listing and two against, with eight abstentions. The COPs in Geneva provided a platform for the launch of the United Nations Environment Programme’s “Waste Crimes, Waste Risks: Gaps and Challenges in the Waste Sector”, a report claiming that up to 90% of electronic waste is illegally traded or dumped. Mr Bartley challenged this figure as well as other findings and data contained in the document, telling delegates in Dubai: “Just because it can’t be measured or data is missing doesn’t mean it’s illegal.” Mr Bartley went on to express concern over the “creeping scope” of the Basel Convention into areas apparently beyond its original remit. “Most would say used and functioning electronics are not waste,” he said by way of example in Dubai. With the full support of the Africa Group and most others, the Basel

Convention adopted its e-Waste Guideline with certain caveats. Returning in his closing comments to the subject of movements of waste, Mr Bartley called for continued support from all industries for the introduction of electronic notification technology to replace the slow, outdated, paper-focused approach still in use today. Opening up a panel discussion in Dubai on latest legislative and policy developments at the EU, OECD and other levels, IEC Chairman Olivier François of NV Galloometal argued that any further moves towards a requirement for the classification of recyclables through chemical analysis would be “difficult for our profession”. Former BIR World and Paper Division President Dominique Maguin of La Compagnie des Matières Premières in France said demands

for chemical analysis would not only “complicate business” but also “increase costs”. Chemical analysis of wastes would be “largely unfeasible”, insisted Alan Wheeler of the UK’s Textile Recycling Association. On the issue of moving to a low carbon economy and carbon credits, Mr Maguin pointed to BIR-commissioned research which had concluded that the recycling industry’s activities were responsible for substantially more than 500 million tonnes of annual carbon emission savings. “Some benefit should come back to us,” he insisted, drawing instant agreement from fellow panellists, including Ian Hetherington of the British Metals Recycling Association and BIR Ferrous Division Vice President Ruggero Alocci of Alocci Rappresentanze Ind. of Italy.
