Union budget 2015 would have a long impact on the growth and finance future of India. Even though we speak in this line every time we come up with a new government or new budget, but this time it is truly a different situation as people do not want to see them enlisted in the poor countries list globally.

Of course, Mr.Modi in his one years’ tenure has definitely brought unfathomable glory to the country by making it a large investment destination of the global investors. But the actual test of his stint as the PM of India starts from now because he has lost the trust of the people in his own home turf where he stays day in day out that is Delhi on the basis of non-performance of the government for last one year. Although we understand that one year is not good enough time to change the situation of the country but the poor people who are suffering every day are not that patient. They need their day to day needs to be fulfilled. Therefore this budget after Delhi defeat is the acid test for Modi government.

The land acquisition bill to be presented by the treasury bench in the parliament is already facing ruckus from the opposition in both the houses - even on the streets of Delhi. Therefore to bring absolute judicious budget is the only respite for the government.

Of course there is no denying that this is a make or break time for the government.

What we basically need: as a developing country we need education for the poorest of the poor, employment for all, good roads and transport, good healthcare and on top of it the commodities should be under our affordability.

So for all these things we need very robust infrastructure at the back, the duties and taxation should be aligned with the growth of the country. Sustainable manufacturing has to happen to absorb our pool of resources. Of course all these things should happen with a balanced view of the global market.

Nothing should happen in such a way which will make us isolated from the global community. To me today, IT is incidentalwhere the larger context is the development infrastructure. We need investment in our roads, airports, railways, public transport, education, manufacturing, etc., than anything specific to taxation. The think tank should take cue from the countries like UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. and replicate in the larger context.

So the union budget 2015 should look at making ‘make in India’ to ‘made-in-India’ and digitisation a priority. The railway budget is already out in the parliament. Good to know that in order to ensure safety and security, there is a proposal to install CCTVs in coaches and on stations and WIFI will be extended to category- B stations as well. Over and above Suresh Prabhu, the Union Minister for Railways has expressed an investment of Rs.850,000 crore in 5 years is likely towards the overall development of railways in India. ë

HDS TO ACQUIRE PENTAHO CORP HDS said it intends to acquire Pentaho Corporation, a big data integration and business analytics company with an open source-based platform for diverse big data deployments.

The acquisition of Pentaho – the largest private big data acquisition transaction to date – is expected to be complete by June 2015, and is subject to customary closing conditions.

Upon the close of the acquisition, Pentaho will become “Pentaho, a Hitachi Data Systems company” and will retain its brand. Today’s data center is rapidly changing in response to cloud, big data, software and infrastructure-as-a-service. Software Defined Networking and Software Defined Data Centers are also creating very dynamic environments which challenge the status quo of how network services are delivered.

In many data center environments, hardware security appliances are deployed at the aggregation layer and can only see “north-south” traffic passing through the physical network. 2014 WAS THE YEAR OF IDENTITY THEFT: Gemalto releases the latest findings of the Breach Level Index, revealing that more than 1,500 data breaches led to one billion data records compromised worldwide during 2014. According to data in the BLI originally developed by SafeNet, the main motivation for cybercriminals in 2014 was identity theft with 54% of the all data breaches being identity theft-based, more than any breach category including access to financial data.

the promise of these two initiatives (and assuming point #1 above is addressed), massive FDI will be required to support the infrastructure revamp.

This will involve streamlining policies, accelerating reforms including (especially) tax reform amongst others.

- Education system & Human Capital - The Indian education system and the resultant workforce has moved from being an asset in the early days of the ‘offshoring’ IT wave to being a liability today. We produce armies of ‘doers’ when the need of the hour is to create larger numbers of ‘thinkers’ and ‘creative talent’. The education system needs a major revamp to move the next generation of students away from the ‘do as you are told’ mindset to one in which they are encouraged to ‘think for themselves’.

We have hidden for too long behind the fig leaf of Indian culture and the ‘respect for authority’ which drives the ‘do as you are told’ mindset. It is time – indeed it is CRITICAL – that we move on from that outdated thinking and teach our students to challenge what they don’t understand or agree with. Given that this is a long-term initiative, in the short term the government, working with industry and academia will have to drive some short to medium term programs to create the required human capital, through training initiatives, encouraging (and maybe even promoting/requiring) internships through one’s academic career etc. Secondly, focusing on improving the legions of academic institutes that continue to churn out un-employable graduates needs to be addressed on a war footing. Gartner’s conservative estimate is that only 20-25% of India’s graduate pool is readily employable. This HAS to change. ë

ith the advent of virtualization and the associated move of hosting multiple virtual machines on a single server, many of the problems related to IT infrastructure have now disappeared. Virtualization isnow a mature concept even in developing markets, including India.

Many Indian IT organizations believe that a virtualization strategy can move them up the virtualization curve to the dynamic datacenter as their future. CIOs are looking to virtualization to improve operational efficiency, improve utilization and reduce hardware and reduce capital costs. While containing costs is currently a critical metric for every IT organization, many customers are also anticipating the increased flexibility and responsiveness to meet dynamic business requirements the real value of transforming their current IT environment.

Depending on their respective strategies, organizations are adopting open source or propriety virtualization architectures.

Market research firm IDC estimates that the economic impact of server virtualization in India will be $3.89 billion by 2020. This takes into account the money that can be saved in servers, power, cooling and real-estate. According to Gartner,

by 2015, almost 20% of overall VPN / Firewall market will be deployed using virtual infrastructure and 100% of overall IT security product capabilities will be delivered from the cloud.

Gartner also estimates the public cloud services market in India to reach $1.9 billion by 2018, of which infrastructure as a service (IaaS) will account for about $300 million.

Some service providers have taken the logical next steps toward making their data center more automated and efficient.

“The need for meeting these sudden and quick demands from businesses is driving the next thinking and actions toward building a more elastic, agile and dynamic data center. Some enterprises have also gone ahead with plans to create a private cloud platform to transform their internal IT from silos of hardware, software and applications to a converged data center providing IT as a service,” a Gartner report emphasis.

In terms of Cloud Computing, India is all set to launch itself into the skies and stay there for a long time to come.

There is a strong sense of optimism in the job market and the economy seems to be on the upswing. I expect the budget to boost the job sector and hiring to pick up significantly across sectors and industries. India’s GDP growth is projected to rise to 6.5% in 2015-16, and this will imply good news for job seekers at all levels, especially freshers. There is a lot of expectation from this government and I feel the initiatives and reforms that will be announced should positively impact jobs. During the last budget, the government laid emphasis on startups, which

is really a shot in the arm for entrepreneurs, job seekers, as well as cities like Bangalore that provide a sound startup ecosystem. I expect more focus on startups, as well as on sectors like IT/ ITeS that employ millions. I think we also need more clarity on issues like taxation, and incentives to ease the process of doing business. Moreover, I feel there should be tax rebates given for investing in skills training, since upgradation of skills is a necessity for industries that are constantly on the lookout for talent to fuel growth.

To boost the job sector, I think the government should introduce life and medical cover for all salaried employees who are also tax payers. A graded approach should be announced-whereby those paying more tax should be entitled to higher coverage. Moreover, there should be an introduction of insurance for salaried employees (who are also tax payers) to cover for instances of unplanned termination of jobs. Measures like these will help in drastically reducing anxiety and stress amongst our workforce. l Topping my list of expectations this Budget is the introduction of life and medical insurance coverage for all salaried employees who are tax payers. Today there is no social security other than the PF contribution, and some tax exemptions. The government needs to take

certain responsibility towards citizens who earn an income and are also tax payers. l All salaried people who are tax payers should be covered for instances of redundancy or unplanned termination of their jobs. If an employee is deemed redundant, it implies that the job he or she was doing is no longer required.

Today it’s nowhere mandated to provide coverage for either redundancy or sudden termination of employment. I earnestly feel that coverages for life, medical and redundancy should be somewhere built into the budget. l Section 35CCD of the Income Tax Act, 1961, mentions that if companies are investing in skill development, the company will be entitled to a higher weighted deduction of this expenditure.

The notification issued so far, does not include IT companies in its coverage. I feel that IT companies should be included under the scope of this provision as it will encourage IT firms to invest more in skill development, which in turn will help to achieve the objective of Digital India and Smart Indian Cities. l Today we have maximum income tax of 30%. But there is surcharge on education cess which takes the maximum tax bracket to 33%.

This should be brought down to 30%, so that some people get a 3% rebate. ë

study by Bell Labs, the industrial research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, has identified that network operators who use converged IP and optical transport technologies can significantly ease the burden being placed on their infrastructure by demands for capacity caused by the explosion of bandwidthhungry applications.

The study, which is published today, looked to determine if and how converged IP/optical control integration could reduce network resource requirements without compromising service availability. This was done by comparing the relative cost of integrating and coordinating resiliency methods in both the IP routing and optical transport network. Resilience is the network’s ability to resume normal operations if a failure occurs and is an essential component of an operator’s highly reliable network.

The results show that by converging routing and optical transport technologies operators can meet the same requirements for service availability while using up to 40% less network resources, such as 100G router ports and optical transponders.

Through the study, researchers successfully uncovered the potential cost benefits using a converged operation of routing and optical transport in an integrated multilayer network model. The study shows that: l An integrated resiliency strategy saves costs while still guaranteeing network and

service availability l Introducing protection for the optical layer based on GMPLS (Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching) allows service providers to meet the same availability levels achieved by routing protection methods based on MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), with total savings up to 40% on router ports and optical transponders over a five year period. l The combination of IP and optical transport layer protection with a GMPLS user network interface (UNI) allows service providers to accelerate these savings by freeing up a third of deployed network capacity and provide headroom for two years of traffic growth.

Furthermore, by establishing an integrated multi-layer control plane now, a cloudoptimized network can easily be achieved down the line. To do this, service providers can do the following: 1. Introduce an Agile Optical Network with a dynamic GMPLS control plane 2. Extend optical transport layer control to the IP routing layer with GMPLS UNI 3. Provide open, programmable Software Defined Network (SDN) interfaces based on open standards The result is an integrated multi-layer network with a unified control plane, with immediate cost benefits from better network utilization and operational efficiencies. Total cost of ownership savings may vary based on the topology size, connectivity and traffic mix. ë

MODUS OPERANDI: ADVANCED PERSISTENT THREATS (APT) A decade ago, the biggest risk from a bad virus was a temporarily disabled computer and some lost files. Today, targeted attacks are on the rise and APTs, widely used for data breaches and cyber-espionage, pose a real threat for organizations.

Traditional cyber-attacks employ “smash and grab” tactics. By contrast, APT-style attackers are willing to be more patient as they craft their attack strategy and wait till the reward grows bigger, better, sweeter.

They break into the target network in well-calibrated phases - Reconnaissance, Incursion, Discovery, Capture and Exfiltration – elude detection, and harvest valuable information over the long term.

Reconnaissance, the most important phase to start the attack, is the phase when the attacker leverages information from different factors to understand their target.

The next phase called Incursion is when the attackers inject the malware through the recently found vulnerabilities in the systems or

people. Discovery, another crucial step is when the attacker has now become an insider, studying the internal defense systems of the target organization to craft his next move and to stay undetected.

After studying the systems well, the attacker launches his attacks in the Capture phase by gathering all the information he wants to steal or install a malware to disrupt company operations. Exfiltration is another important step for attackers, as in this phase they send all the captured information to their home base for further analysis and exploitation without detection.
