All poises on Infrastructure Development
S A N J AY M A H A PAT R A S A N J AY @ E N T E R P R I S E C H A N N E L S . C O M
‘Ache Din Ayenge’, ‘SabkaSaath SabkaVikash’, ‘in 2-3 years, India will achieve a high growth trajectory’, etc., are these phrases mere hyperbole or propaganda or the rhetoric of the ruling party? Some might say yes but majority will say it is actually not as the development is palpable on the ground. Here the reference is to the infrastructure in the country which can lead to the development of every sector including ICT. In two-three days’ time we could see a lot of news around India which are enough to justify work in progress – first the Mars mission, which is a successful one at a cost which is unthinkable by the western world therefore the country is receiving criticism that how is it possible to accomplish such a critical mission in just $74 million or in INR terms Rs.450 crores. It might be ego but it is certainly a matter of pride and an epitome of India’s indigenous science and technology advancement. It is certainly an infrastructure which will in long run help the growth of other sectors. Secondly, Mr.Modi dreams of Swach Bharat, a mission to building over 800 million toilets and setting up modern sewage systems to make India free from open defecation and open drains in the next five years. Yesterday, Mr.Modi inaugurated a mega food park in Tumkur, Karnataka, which will be built up by Future Group - first of its kind in India - with the investment of Rs.250 crore in the project. Till date, 50 units have been established for food processing. Thirdly, there is news that IKIA, the Swedish furniture retailer, will set up its first store in India in Hyderabad. As a standard practice, IKEA invests Rs.500-600 crore for their design and establishment. So look at how many people will be engaged there. It also underscores the fact the government is acceded to the idea of 100 percent FDI in retail. The government wished and articulated it, and justified with the budget provisioning through finance allocations and to creating a framework to undertake the developments soon. The Railway Budget 2014 has proposed to set up a Diamond Quadrilateral rail network connecting major metros apart from announcing a bullet train. The Rail Budget also proposed to attract private domestic investment and FDI in infrastructure for . Similarly there is provision of high speed transit corridors in India, plus, 200 low-cost airports in the next 20 years to connect tier-II and tier-III cities. Plus the budget also provisioned an allocation of Rs.7,600crore for developing 100 smart cities. Remember all these developments need huge ICT backbone and India is ready for that. In this issue, we have tried to collate opinions of various ICT companies about their participation on Indian ICT infrastructure capability development. ë

IBM Introduces Watson Analytics IBM has launched Watson Analytics, a breakthrough natural language-based cognitive service that can provide instant access to powerful predictive and visual analytic tools for businesses. According to analysts, only a small fraction of business people use powerful analytics tools as part of their decision making today. Watson Analytics is designed to make advanced and predictive analytics easy to acquire and use for anyone. The first release of Watson Analytics will include a freemium version of its cloud-based service designed to run on desktop and mobile devices. Watson Analytics offers a full range of self-service analytics, including access to easy to use data refinement and data warehousing services that make it easier for business users to acquire and prepare data – beyond simple spreadsheets -- for analysis and visualization that can be acted upon and interacted with. Unlike analytics offerings designed primarily for data scientists and analysts predominantly focused
on visualization, IBM Watson Analytics automates steps like data preparation, predictive analysis, and visual storytelling for business professionals across data intensive disciplines like marketing, sales, operations, finance and human resources. “Watson Analytics is designed to help all business people – from sales reps on the road to company CEOs – see patterns, pursue ideas and improve all types of decisions,” said Bob Picciano, Senior Vice President, Information and Analytics Group, IBM. “We have eliminated the barrier between the answers they seek, the analytics they want and the data in the form they need. The combination of Watson-fueled analytics to magnify human cognition, the vast potential of big data, and cloud-scale delivery to PCs, smart phones and other devices is transformational.” Designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, business users can gain instant access to persona-based business scenarios specific to their role.

Symantec to Host Cyber Readiness Challenge for Corporate India Symantec will be hosting Cyber Readiness Challenge (CRC) in India for the first time on Wednesday, 03 September at the Vivanta by Taj on M.G Road, Bangalore. The CRC is an immersive, interactive ‘capture the flag’ competition that models scenarios based on the current threat landscape using realistic IT infrastructure. A first of its kind by a security vendor, the CRC has already seen participation from hundreds of enterprises across the globe and will be launched in Mumbai and Delhi next announced the press release. As targeted attacks and advanced persistent threats (APTs) that are capable of stealing financial/customer data and intellectual property, by compromising critical information assets become more real for organizations, the need for increased security awareness and strong protection against threats has never been stronger. Symantec’s CRC is designed to enable security experts in organizations to experience new attack methods with the latest technologies. Designed
for many levels of technical skill and experience, it puts participants in the hacker’s shoes to better understand their targets, technology and thought processes so they can ultimately better protect their organization and themselves. By completing security-related challenges to capture the most flags, the participants sharpen their ethical hacking and cyber-forensic skills and raise their awareness of cyber security targets. Commenting on the launch of the challenge in India, Sanjay Rohatgi, President, Sales - Symantec India, said, “The Symantec 2014 Internet Security Threat Report revealed how despite stepping up their information security measures, large enterprises in India continue to be an attractive target for cybercriminals, with over 69 percent of the targeted attacks in India carried out against them. The CRC that is modeled on real life security scenarios provides an opportunity for IT and security experts to experience and formulate effective security strategies against future cyber-attacks.”
WIPRO TO EXPAND PRESENCE IN OMAN Wipro Gulf LLC, the entity established in 2011 in Oman to serve local clients, has been growing rapidly over the last three years, delivering critical projects across Oil & Gas, Aviation, Engineering, Banks and Government sectors within the Sultanate of Oman. The recent consulting and implementation projects done by Wipro for clients in these sectors have been well appreciated. Wipro Oman currently employs 70 professionals and has provided services to more than 25 clients across sectors. Buoyed by the rising demand for services, Wipro plans to double the headcount over the next 12 - 18 months. MukundSeetharaman, GM and Business Head (Gulf), Wipro Ltd., said, “In continuation of our long term business outlook for Oman, we are seeing a lot of interest from clients in the region for services around business enablement, simplification and analytics. We are committed to delivering world class solutions and building on our existing footprint to create new job opportunities in the local market.”
GLOBAL SERVER SHIPMENTS GROWS 1.3 PERCENT IN Q2’14 In the second quarter of 2014, worldwide server shipments grew 1.3 percent year-over-year, while revenue moved upward 2.8 percent from the second quarter of 2013, according to Gartner, Inc. “The second quarter of 2014 produced relatively weak growth on a global level, with mixed results by platform,” said Jeffrey Hewitt, research vice president at Gartner. “All regions showed growth in both shipments and vendor revenue except for Eastern Europe, Japan and Latin America.” Eastern Europe fell 5.6 percent in units and 1.6 percent in vendor revenue; Japan declined 4.3 percent in units and 2.5 percent in vendor revenue; and Latin America dropped 16.5 percent in units but managed to produce a vendor revenue increase of 6.7 percent for the quarter, highest among all regions. The platform mix by region and geographic variations in economic conditions are the main reasons for these results. Overall, Middle East and Africa posted the highest shipment growth with a 6 percent increase, while Asia/Pacific, North America and EMEA grew by 5 percent, 1.6 percent and 0.8 percent in the second quarter. In server shipments, HP remained the worldwide leader in the second quarter of 2014. HP’s worldwide server shipments declined 2.9 percent, as shipments totaled nearly 570,000 units. Dell, the No. 2 vendor based on shipments, had a unit decline of 11.4 percent.

optimization, Unity finds the best route to applications in the public cloud as well as on private networks announced the press release. It does this using sophisticated new cloud intelligence and WAN routing technology, which correlates information about SaaS applications and Internet “weather,” then sends traffic to the cloud over the shortest or
least-congested path. “SaaS has taken business productivity to new heights, but it has also dramatically changed the dynamics of IT networking,” said Damon Ennis, SVP of products for Silver Peak. “The weather on the Internet can be congested one minute and tolerable the next, making the performance of cloud
services unpredictable. Even worse, your IT staff have no way to monitor traffic to the cloud once it leaves the WAN. Silver Peak’s Unity fabric gives them capabilities they’ve never had before. It turns the Internet into your own private, high-performance network and brings SaaS under the control of IT.”

he change in threat landscape in the country has impacted the market on ground. It has not only influenced the security vendors to create new solutions with higher efficiency but has also pushed the partners to add on capability to address the sophisticated threats. S3 Networks, founded in 2006 as a security audit company, has also changed its strategy to implement and service the South India customers and the brand they got associated with is Kaspersky Lab. KalyanVenkatramanan, Founder & CEO, S3 Networks, said, “We are specialized in offering IT security assessment services, packaged solutions as firewall, IDS/IPS, antivirus, access control, internet bandwidth management, data security to clients in South India.” S3 Networks’ service desk enables its client’s business to run more efficiently. The company provides customer care, including end-user and technical support, sales and retention to support the organization. For Kaspersky Lab, the company has dedicated one support manager and a team of two engineers to provide quality assurance services to our customers. Kalyan said, “When we started, we were looking to get an Endpoint security client for our business and that time I came across a friend of

BIG DATA
Big Data with Big Success – India Findings
While a significant number of organizations may still be standing on the sidelines, big data users who complete projects see practical results and significant value, according to new research done by Accenture Analytics.

hose in India that have begun to use big data are overwhelmingly satisfied with business outcomes—even more so than respondents from other geographies. Organizations perceive big data to be critical for a wide spectrum of strategic corporate goals, from new revenue generation and new market development to enhancing the customer experience and improving enterprise-wide performance. However, to reap the rewards, companies must be prepared for challenges. Key findings from the research in India mirror those in the global research: Big data is taking off. Users who have completed at least one project are very satisfied with their initial forays into big data. Big data demands big learning. Users begin big data projects thinking it will be easy, only to discover that there is a lot to learn about data as an asset and about analytics. Help needed, big time. With big data talent in short supply, successful users source skills wherever they can find them, leaning heavily on external, experienced resources. Big data is definitely disruptive, potentially transformational. The consensus is clear: big data brings disruption that could revolutionize business. Immediate impact on India Focused on organizations that have done one or more big data implementations, the report notes that in India, 94 percent are satisfied with business outcomes. An astonishing 100 percent say that their implementation meets their business needs. l Nearly all India companies (94 percent) are satisfied with the business outcomes driven by

be fairly easy, only to discover that there is a lot to learn about data frameworks and analytic techniques. Challenging—yet not impossible—big data implementations force users to stay flexible, adapting and learning as they grow. l Security (59 percent) and talent (53 percent) are the main challenges in implementing big data in India. Budget (49 percent) is also an issue for many. l Research (76 percent), training (71 percent) and workshops (57 percent) are used to address these challenges in India. Help needed big time In India, 53 percent of companies noted a lack of talent to implement big data with 43 percent noting the need for talent to run big data and analytics on an ongoing basis. Like the rest of the world, competition for relatively scarce big data talent necessitates looking for outside help for companies in India. l Sixty-nine percent leveraged the help of consultants, 61 percent used contract employees, and 37 percent used technology vendor resources.
l In India, all companies used one or more external resources for assistance with their big data projects. l More companies in India (63 percent) than globally (55 percent) are looking to increase their data science expertise within the next year.
Indian companies believe big data will be transformational Many organizations believe big data will revolutionize business operations in the same way the Internet did, and feel big data will dramatically change the way they do business. Early practitioners see competitive advantage in big data, and are rapidly moving to disrupt their own data practices, rather than let competitors beat them to the punch. Nearly four of five companies (78 percent) in India see big data as impacting customer relationships over the next five years. l A significant number of users believe big data will revolutionize operations the same way the Internet did (84 percent in India vs 89 percent globally). l Users believe big data is very important to
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INDIAN COMPANIES l Start small, then grow. Begin with a proof of concept to explore the potential with smaller budget, fewer resources; demonstrate value and ROI quickly; build internal consensus and grow big data programs organically. l Be nimble. Adapt and learn as technologies evolve, and new opportunities can be explored. l Expand your definition of big data—what it is, what emerging big data technologies can do, what you can do with big data. l Focus on building skills. Hire external resources, staffing up when possible, developing internal skills through training and development.

he major task for any CIO is to manage his department from a technical as well as cost perspective. One of the major concerns that CIO’s faces is collaboration. As a CIO, it is important to ensure to that all employees collaborate and work in unison to illicit better results. Departments need collaborate and work as a team. Be it the application team or the infrastructure team. Cloud is an integral aspect and CIO’s need to grasp the concept since cloud is still at a nascent stage in the country and without fully understanding its power we will be under-utilizing it. Another major concern is the consumerization of IT. “IT is no longer exclusive to tech space and employees today use personal devices in the office space. This however brings with it certain problems,” said Abhilash Purushothaman, Director - Service Assurance, CA Technologies, India. “The onus lies on CIO’s to set policies to govern the usage of these devices. IT Infrastructure Management solutions help monitor and manage the availability and performance of these IT assets and services. An enterprise’s overburdened IT operations can quickly and easily access the information they need to improve service quality, predictability and efficiency with less effort and reduced costs.” According to Gartner, the Indian IT infrastructure market, comprising server, storage and networking equipment, is likely to rise by 4% year-on-year to $1.9 billion in 2014. In the global landscape, India is a promising IT Infrastructure market through 2017. Indian IT infrastructure is poised to be a
$2.35 billion market by 2017. After sluggish market conditions in 2013, the Indian infrastructure market will witness investments primarily fuelled by key IT initiatives that include mobility, cloud and big data. “Indian enterprises will be focusing on building intelligent data centers that focus on optimizing existing hardware assets by using additional software capabilities. This is what we would call as Software defined Infrastructure,” said Praveen Sahai, Vice President - Channels, EMC India & SAARC. This will drive increased attention on newer trends such as public cloud, and integrated systems. There is great potential for both users and vendors to leverage some of the emerging technologies to be ready for the future. Storage modernisation and consolidation, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery are some of the key drivers to this market, and they are likely to remain relevant drivers over the forecast period through 2017.

Source: Gartner, (September 2014) The Indian data center infrastructure market, comprising of server, storage and networking equipment, will total $2.03 billion in 2015, a 5.4 percent increase from 2014 revenue of $1.92 billion, according to Gartner, Inc. India will be the second largest market for data center infrastructure within the Asia/Pacific region, and it will also be the second fastest growing market in Asia/Pacific in 2015. “A strong return to growth is expected next year in the Indian data center infrastructure market, and the market will be buoyed by an overall increase in sentiments and a strong resurgence of growthrelated projects across verticals such as banking, insurance, telecom and the government segment,” said AmanMunglani, research director at Gartner. ”While much of the SMB segment is likely to focus on infrastructure build up, large enterprises within the segments mentioned above will look at infrastructure replacement and growth related projects covering mobility, cloud and big data.” Indian enterprises will be focusing on building intelligent data centers that focus on optimizing existing hardware assets by using additional software capabilities. This will drive increased attention on newer trends such as public cloud, and integrated systems. Within the Indian IT infrastructure market, server revenue is forecast to reach $677 million in 2015, a
and public clouds for different applications. Larger enterprises will build greater private cloud capacity as they have the resources while smaller enterprises will build leverage public clouds more. The shift to cloud computing is being driven by the exploding Digital Universe. As per IDC Digital Universe study, digital bits captured or created each year in India are expected to grow from 127
3 percent increase over 2014 (see Table 1). This will be the first year of positive growth post the decline of 5.3 percent in 2013 and the 2.1 percent decrease expected in 2014. There are numerous drivers for compute capacity- for example the Nexus of Forces (encompassing cloud, social, mobile and information) creates a whole host of new workloads that will need servers to provision the compute capacity. Density, power consumption and performance are some of the top concerns on the minds of end user organizations. Enterprise networking is the biggest segment with revenue expected to reach $948 million in 2015. Data center consolidation and virtualization, along with cloud and mobility, are the key trends influencing network purchases. There is great potential for both users and vendors to leverage some of the emerging technologies to be ready for the future. The storage market is forecast to reach $409 million in 2015, a 7 percent increase from this year. Storage modernization and consolidation, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery are some of the key drivers to this market, and they are likely to remain relevant drivers over the forecast period through 2018. A strong recovery within the telecommunication segment, coupled with growth within the manufacturing and the government segment, will continue to drive market growth.

SOFTWARE-DEFINE INFRASTRUCTURE Currently many businesses lack holistic IT security and storage practices and technologies to deal with the new set of challenges posed by the above mentioned trends, making it important for CIOs, CXOs to understand their business and strategize their IT practices to effectively manage the ecosystem. The biggest road block that CIOs face while upgrading the infrastructure is the investments in legacy systems. While businesses are now focusing on building intelligent datacenters that focus on optimizing existing hardware assets by using additional software capabilities, there is also a need to merge multiple operation system into one to meet the dynamic need of business. “Organizations are now transitioning towards

adopting Software Defined Datacenter, which brings agility and scalability to the storage, network and computer framework and enables the businesses be to elastic, intelligent and deliver application- as- a- service. It also provides customer the flexibility to decide the hardware of their choice, reduce dependency on hardware and better utilize the resources available,” said Tarun Kaura, Director – Technology Sales, India, Symantec. “We are focusing on software defined storage as its compact form and ability to reduce licensing costs have been considered to be the key highlights and therefore the rise in its demand in this sector. We observe a huge demand for low latency requirements in the country today and would like to play towards achieving them,” IBM’s Balasubramanian said. “At EMC we feel SDI is a journey and this journey starts with existing infrastructure which is largely built on “2nd platform”. The journey has
to be traversed with organizations like EMC who not only offers best of breed and most inclusive solutions for 2nd platform but also drive a very strong SDI conversation and a “3rd platform” inputs as organizations move from stage 1 to stage 2,” Sahai said.
THE WAY AHEAD Today when the nation is discussing about Smarter Cities and improved standard of living one of the basic questions that arises, are we ready for the bigger stakes? If yes, then how? All of these queries boil down to ‘smarter’ infrastructure. Technology with its practical application for the infrastructural requirements can be a helpful hand in bringing about the transformational pre-requisites. Today, IT infrastructure has come to be recognised as a sought after service for large companies as well as small and medium enterprises. The ‘need’ lies within the purpose and in this case technology serves just that. ë

A DEEPER
Look at Data Security Readiness Data security is the primary concern of every enterprise but there is always confusion as to how to start and what to start with as far as security solution is concerned reason being there are so many security solutions and there are so many applications available in the market. A key foundation or first pillar of any data security solution should start with data encryption and key management. If a solution is built with the proper foundation, the risks associated with data loss or exposure is greatly reduced, including the negative impacts on process and capabilities. But this begs the question, what is your organisations thinking and approach to securing their environment? How far down the path have they gone in securing their environments and is encryption a key foundation? There are of course different levels of security that can be established across different areas or sectors of the business encryption solutions are no different. More than ever before, data encryption and security are top of mind among most IT administrators as more and more regulations and laws are put in place to curb the risk of data loss. As organisations seek to improve their security models, they’re faced with a myriad of options to lock down systems, processes and networks. However, in our experience organisations have avoided looking at a robust encryption solution because they feel: l It can be too costly and expensive l It will slow down overall device performance l Process and capabilities become complicated and affect user experience l There are too many devices to secure and monitor leaving organisations at a loss of where to start If the right data encryption
solution is implemented, it is possible to fully secure your organisational data while reducing IT costs and being completely invisible to the end-user. Also, the idea of maturing your processes and solution approach is critical to understanding and controlling your security. From our perspective there are five levels of data encryption maturity that organisations can find themselves in: Level 1 - Unaware A level where there is no data protection solution utilized by an organization. As far as the business is concerned, there is no business driver to adopt encryption. Organisations in this category are at a high level of risk in the event a device is lost or stolen. They typically haven’t evaluated their security needs and the risks associated with not adopting such a foundational approach to data security. Level 1 - Unaware A level where there is no data protection solution utilized by an organization. As far as the business is concerned, there is no business driver to adopt encryption. Organisations in this category are at a high level of risk in the event a device is lost or stolen. They typically haven’t evaluated their security needs and the risks associated with not adopting such a foundational approach to data security. Level 2 - Tactical This is alevel where a company
selectively deploys basic software or OS-based encryption to a defined and often very limited number of laptops devices. There are no central management capabilities and is managed via desk side support only. It’s a baseline solution that may be ‘good enough’ but lacks control and efficiency as it will generally encrypt only one type of device (like a laptop), in a silo’ed team or department. This tactical approach is often born out of the need for compliance to specific laws, legislation or regulations. Level 3 - Defined This level is defined as encryptionbeing leveraged across most, if not all endpoint (laptops) devices and may begin to include some removable media.Centralized management is also introduced at this level. There is room for improvement as there are still devices and endpoints that do not have data security and could act as an access point to authorized users. In this instance, like the Tactical level, compliance is driving the need for encryption but in addition to this, there’s a requirement for better audit and control capabilities. Level 4 – Managed A level where most, if not all, devices are encrypted including desktops. This is all controlled through a fully centralized management solution and gives administrators the granularity of control they need without being a hindrance to

the end-user. Building on the same business drivers as the Defined category, Managed organisations also need to improve their overall IT management process and ensure they maintain a positive brand image. Level 5 – Optimized At this level organisations are taking complete control of all devices and are deploying encryption for all data no matter where it resides. Management capabilities enables a view and control of all endpoints, irrespective of platform, and key management capabilities for securing and encrypting data that resides in public or private cloud. The big difference for Optimized organisations is that their need is to have a solution that can help decrease IT management costs and reduce or eliminate the impact on the end-user experience that could hurt productivity. At this level organisations are in the best position to reduce risks significantly and safeguard confidential data. There is no quick solution, it’s an evolution. Companies must work through to fully optimize their data security strategies while reducing IT costs. WinMagic possesses the expertise and consultative approach to help customers determine their current and desired state on the Maturity Model. Their industry leading encryption solutions ensure required capabilities are enable appropriately at all desired levels of the maturity curve. ë

Symantec to Bridge Gap Between local Storage and SDDC
The explosion of Information has further challenged the existing solutions deployed in enterprises. IDC forecasts that the volume of digital data will grow 40 - 50 percent per year clearly indicating that Information Storage and Management will remain in vogue and a big focus area for CIOs across sectors. n W O R D S : S A N J AY M O H A PAT R A < S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N F O M E D I A . n order to increase overall efficiency, organizations are looking to become more agile and the concept of Software Defined Datacenter (SDDC), that virtualizes the server, network, and storage levels, is gaining more prominence. SDDC will bring in a more efficient and centralized model of utilizing IT resources. In addition to this, trends like hybrid cloud and integrated backup appliances will continue to gain momentum. TarunKaura, Director – Technology Sales, India, Symantec, “As per a research by SINTEF, 90 percent of the world’s current data was produced in the last two years alone. This is indicative of the data deluge that CIOs have encountered in the recent times, which also translates to the complexity of managing such high volumes of information.” Further, the Symantec State of Information Survey 2012 states that more than a third (38 percent) of business information in Indian organizations is duplicate, contributing to one of the top challenges associated with information management leading to Information Mayhem. The study also revealed that Indian businesses are facing huge challenges when trying to manage their information with two thirds (66 percent) saying that there was no ‘single version of truth’
24

when it came to information: having multiple versions of identical files. In addition, 63 percent of information is hard to find, further contributing to the sea of information that is challenging businesses today.
SOME OF THE DATA STORAGE/ MANAGEMENT RELATED COMPETENCIES IN THIS PROGRAM ARE: l Symantec
Some of the challenges IT departments face include: l Managing storage in complex, heterogeneous physical and virtual environments, dealing with structured and unstructured data l De-duplication : In order to avoid wasting storage with multiple and older versions of the same files l Managing the compliance and IT regulations - Applying and enforcing retention policies across files efficiently l Managing and finding information as and when required The growth of mission-critical data and applications, supporting real-time decision-making, is driving SSD adoption to increase performance within the data center. Adoption however has lacked the central management intelligence that customers need to manage their storage efficiently and effectively. Symantec’s offering solves this problem while allowing customers to combine SSDs with existing Direct Attached

Storage (DAS) and SANs without compromising availability. In line with the current needs of the market, Symantec has recently announced the latest version of NetBackup solution as well as the Storage Foundation (6.1). Tarunadded, “Storage Foundation 6.1 enables data centers to leverage Solid State Drives (SSDs) in ways that allow customers to access mission critical data and applications 400 percent faster than traditional Storage Area Networks (SANs).”

As per him, it is also the only offering to provide these benefits regardless of which hardware components or operating systems are in place. Customers as a result are free to choose any storage infrastructure provider, and businesses can make critical decisions faster. NetBackup solution (7.6) brings new functionality and helps protect the largest scale VMware-based environments as enterprises move to a software-defined data center architecture. NetBackup 7.6 is the only backup product designed for enterprise level scale, which can accommodate hundreds of thousands of virtual machines and petabytes of data while giving customers 400x faster virtual machine recovery than a standard restore. IT organizations can now simplify and automate the protection of massive and complex physical, virtual and cloud environments that are the building blocks of a modern data center. Interestingly the entire solution goes through the channel partners. With approximately 90 percent of Symantec’s business in India being partner-led, the company sees tremendous value in investing in committed, capable partners to drive deeper relationships with customers that will help them address information security challenges, and complexities in the areas of cloud, data center and mobility. Tarun commented, “Our Channel Strategy provides the foundation for a more meaningful and consistent Partner Program that focuses on delighting customers, enabling greater partner profitability, and delivering greater recognition and reward for partner performance. It is constantly evolving with the ever-changing market demands.” Through the redesigned Symantec partner Program, Symantec wishes to drive success by collaborating closely with its partners and aligning its business objectives; enabling them with competencies required which will enable the partners to solve customers’ information management challenges for enterprises, small businesses and consumers. Some of the data storage/ management related competencies in this program are Symantec Archiving Competency, Symantec Dynamic Storage and Continuity Competency, Symantec eDiscovery Competency, Symantec Enterprise Backup and Recovery Competency and Symantec Mid-Market Backup and Recovery Competency amongst others. A common trait across successful businesses is their ability to efficiently adapt to the latest trendsand processes that have positive impacts to business performance and revenue growth. A business that is agile includes an agile IT
organization- one that combines the benefits of IT Intelligence with the right combinations of the optimized cost center and trusted cloud service frameworks, tailored perfectly for each business service. The data centers of tomorrow are set to be more complex and decentralized than those of today. Only with IT Intelligence can data centres, and organization be truly agile: smart enough to efficiently, quickly and cost-efficiently meet customer needs, even with changing business needs.
FINALLY… Achieving an agile data center requires elastic infrastructure, service-model delivery, and the application of IT intelligence. The future of enterprise storage is achieving an agile data center that delivers the right resources to theright users, in the right way. ë

NETWORKING
HP SDN
Ushering into the SDN Regime Enterprise business today is influenced by new sets of rules and there are various internal and external factors influencing the outcome of the business. The major influencer of the business outcome being social media, wireless and mobility, there is a requirement of strong but agile networking infrastructure to support quick changes to make result oriented outcomes. n W O R D S : S A N J AY M O H A PAT R A < S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N F O M E D I A . oday’s customers are clearly aligning with Virtualisation, Cloud, Analytics, Mobility, Social Media and the rising use of wireless devices. So the new style of IT is all about convergence, cloud, big data, mobility, etc. So with the changing paradigm of converged IT, the role of networking has become enhanced. Very clearly, at the centre of the convergence of all these transition, there is a need of stable, secured and agile network fabric. As HP moved its journey from converged infrastructure to the new style of IT, the role of the network as part of its overall gamut of portfolio and technology direction that the company is taking to the customer is becoming very important. So the company is taking consultation approach in its innovation piece and technology offering around networking as part of the overall portfolio. Therefore, there is a lot of thrust and focus around it from the company stand point. PrakashKrishnamoorthy, Country Manager, HP Networking, India, said, “Clearly there is an overall change in the business climate. In order to keep pace with this change, the organizations are looking at mobility, cloud, big data and security in a big way. They are looking at it from two perspectives. The first one is whether their overall IT is agile, whether the enterprises are able to understand their customers better. whether the enterprises are able to leverage their strategic assets better, whether they are able to connect
26
HP Networking.indd 26
their disparate systems better. It is actually a quest to understand the customers better and faster compared to the closest competition, which can ultimately make difference to the business out come.” “So within the IT organization of our customer, I think we are looking at these new technology elements what HP probably calls ‘the new style of IT’ where the companies adddresses the thoughts of the CIOs like how do I understand our customers better, how do I reduce the cost of IT, how do I make it simple for being agile, how do I get out of the 3-4 year procurement cycle, which is some time consuming and sometime stymie driving innovation. So we hear this very clearly from the customers. Customers are seeing how to drive new revenue streams also the impact of the social media is being accessed by our customers. So the customers are looking to harness all these new technologies including cloud, big data and social media,” he added. This presents an opportunity in the traditional networking as the legacy network architecture are becoming far too complex and far too time consuming in order to deploy, expandor change in the technology whether it is branch or campus or even data centre networking. All of these fall under from 60 days to 180 days of cycle to make any changes. That brings a lot of pressure on their resources and impacts other application driven innovations and exercises that the IT organizations plan. So how do you make the journey from legacy networking to a broader network
architecture, which brings simplicity and gives agility and scale that their business demands or be the key drivers of change in the way networks are getting designed and deployed. The perfect answer to that kind situation lies in software defined network (SDN). That is how it is dovetailing and making the SDN journey possible and making the journey real and time bound. Krishnamoorthy said, “This transition is a phase in which our Indian organizations are. Some of these transitions are like this as some customers are studying, some customers are reviewing, some customers are doing POC and some customers are beginning to run pilot.” “If you look at what the industry pundits like Gartner, Forester and IDC are saying, they are saying that the journey to the SDN has begun and it is going to take time anywhere between 15 to 24 months before you really see enterprise - grade deployments in the market. We very much see that kind of sentiment in our customers and the partners that we talk to,” he added. He maintained, “Questions like tell us about SDN, why we should move to SDN, what is HP proposition, etc. are more heard now than probably three months ago. There are more customers now visiting our Lab in Bangalore and wanting to do deep dive exploration and wanting to do technology implementation in the campus and datacentre. These are transitionary and steps toward the journey for SDN deployment.” India is a country where you see the CIO is an

integral part of the business growth strategy. One should not be ruffled by the news that there are not deployments because the transition phase is also important as the customers need this period to make their journey and plan it right. The customers are clearly looking to the journey of cloud, big data and mobility and at the same time they are planning about what they should have on the network side which can support their journey sustainably so that they can achieve their journey successfully. Hence, the customers are beginning to understand the importance of OpenFlow and relevance of SDN. Players including Microsoft have done a lot of work on Lync. Microsoft has released their SDN ready tools and plugins for an SDN ready world. That is getting attention of the IT managers and CXOs. Conferencing is an important piece of their journey and customers are thinking how do they provide video conferencing at the remote branch, how do they make sure that they are
not overprovisioning my bandwidth. So it is the perfect recipe for the appetite of the bandwidth that the customers are looking at their Lync application. In India the CIOs have embraced virtualization in the compute level at a significant way and many of them have used VMware as a solution to virtualize their compute resources. VMware is also making their journey to SDN through their NSX SDN frame work and in a way it is laying the foundation for the customers to start their journey. On the other hand HP is trying to make sure that they understand the baby steps of the customers and the ecosystem partners and making its overall product and services offering for the customers so that the company can seamlessly transition the customers into the true SDN infrastructure. Krishnamoorthy added, “We are getting ready with our OpenFlow ready switches, which from the basic infrastructure to the adoption and journey towards SDN. We have gone to release SDN controller, which is the next thing the customers need to have in order to build SDN application. We are going to create a federation of SDN controller along with other popular SDN providers. Today, we are bringing to the market a federated approach of SDN controller along with VMware addressing the needs of physical network and virtual network element.” Along with this HP has taken a concerted effort to create SDN ecosystem and working with many partners. One of the important partners is Tech Mahindra. Even Infosys is taking steps in this direction. Some of the large Indian SIs are also stepping on the gas as far as their journey on SDN. Krishnamoorthy says, “We at HP have taken the big bold step by giving the customers the OpenFlow ready switch for the entire networking fabric starting from core to aggregation and campus networks. Not only that, but also we have made OpenFlow ready access points available at this point in time. So while you are embracing mobility, we will give you agility and efficiency by making sure your access points are also part of the SDN journey.” “We have also launched virtual routers, which gives customers, specially those who are totally working with our service provider, same kind of agility and efficiency on the routing side,” he added.
FINALLY… In fact, the portfolio of HP from Switching and Wireless side is completely SDN ready and the roadmap for the Routing side is getting formed up and the ecosystem partners are also getting ready so also some of the applications vendors. In a sense, the preparedness by HP and its partners is complete today than three months back. ë

Indian Consumers predict Digital Revolution in 2025, but Security and Privacy Concerns Linger McAfee Study Reveals Consumer Attitudes on Future Lifestyle and Technology Trends
M
cAfee, part of Intel Security, released the findings of its Safeguarding the Future of Digital India in 2025 which examines India’s thoughts and attitudes towards lifestyle and technology trends a decade from now. The study provides insight into how Indians believe technology will impact their homes, workplace, cars, wearables, mobile devices and the intersection of these technologies with online security and privacy. One of the key revelations of the study was how truly high-tech Indians believe their environment will be in 2025. 92% envision artificial intelligence and robotics helping them in their jobs. 87% believe the refrigerator will automatically add to the grocery list when items are running low and 90% are keen on a wearable device that let you scan the barcode of a particular product (grocery or otherwise) and automatically add it to the shopping cart. 77% Indians also believe that by 2025, they would have been to a house that speaks/ reads to them and 93% are convinced their home security systems will be connected to their mobile device.
CYBERSECURITY According to the survey, 90% of Indians are concerned about what the state of cybersecurity
28

will be 11 years from now. This is not surprising given the near-daily reports about retail and financing institutions being hacked. With new innovations arising every day to make consumers’ lives increasingly connected, Indians may feel hesitant in sharing personal information or adopting these technologies in fear of becoming a victim of a cybercrime. 83% consumers do believe the government will play a more active role in protecting businesses from cybersecurity in 11 years
CYBERCRIME The study also revealed that as many as 72% of consumers fear their families could fall victim to hackers over the next decade. Many Indian citizens (80%) believe their families will be affected by cyberbullies in 2025. With the number of social networking working sites and the people who frequent them growing, the likelihood of consumers experiencing negative encounters online increases. “As Indians come to terms with the internet of things, we understand consumers are concerned about how these changes will impact their safety and privacy,” said JagdishMahapatra, Managing Director- India and SAARC, McAfee, part of Intel Security. “With this study, we hope to shine a light on these concerns and I believe that McAfee
is well poised to best integrate new innovations with consumer’s online security and privacy in mind specifically targeted at addressing the new-age threat landscape.” To provide comprehensive security for all customers, improved malware protection and an optimized user experience have been integrated in the newly launched product line, which includes McAfee AntiVirus Plus, McAfee Internet Security, McAfee Total Protection, McAfee LiveSafe™ service and the award-winning McAfee Mobile Security, which was made freely available earlier this year. McAfee’s recently upgraded malware scanning engine offers improved detection and performance capabilities that protects a customer’s data and identity information across all of the PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets they own. Additional components have also been reengineered to improve performance and enable devices to run faster and efficiently with PC boot-up time that is up to 22% faster than previous versions.
