Welcome to 2015!

S A N J AY M A H A PAT R A S A N J AY @ E N T E R P R I S E C H A N N E L S . C O M

This year, the voice of the people sounds more warm while greeting each other in the IT industry. There is confidence in the air. People realise about what they have done. They have brought in a party to the power with absolute majority and that party in government is in resonance with the sentiment of the people and IT industry. Sometime back I was sitting with the senior management of Cisco India and they were of view that they would keep on investing in the areas of IOT, analytics, cloud computing, big data and mobility this year. They are of strong view that 100 smart cities that are getting created in India would drive the market to a positive growth. There are a lot of infrastructure projects also in the pipeline which will open up opportunity for the entire industry. The growth of market for next five years from 2015 would attract a lot of workforce and engage every partner, ISV, ISP, SP, CSP, integrators and vendors. The projects would be delivered on a PPP model and there would be no competition among each other as the role will be defined for each of the players. Cisco, therefore is building up various new categories of partnerships, which will be the consortium of ISVs, MSIs and normal channel partners to address the future needs of the market. The company is getting its ecosystem ready with all required capabilities and certifications so that whenever there is a call for the action, they can address. When the market is ready to deploy all necessary technologies to make their organizations smarter, their priority is moving to enabling the information workers with right mobile devises and management so that they can contribute to the organization from any location and any time. In order to make that possible, the CIOs are evaluating various forms of cloud solutions from various vendors. They are also taking the security piece very seriously. I was speaking to Arun Kumar Parameswaran, MD, VMware India sometime back. He told that in the last 3-4 months, any CIO he is meeting, he is coming to hear about how to implement right mobility policy so that their data is not hacked by the external forces or their network does not get infected by malicious codes. So mobility is becoming priority for the enterprises along with social media and analytics. This is very good piece of news in the market reason being the focus on mobility and social media will certainly lead to the growth of cloud computing of some sorts.  ë

ven though a late entrant in the cloud market, Oracle Corp. has made major strides and posted strong results for the second quarter of fiscal 2015 on December 17th. The major highlight was the revenue from Cloud business which grew 47% year over year up from $475 million in the previous quarter to reach total revenue of $590 million. While Softwareas-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS),grewby 41% compared to the previous year to reach $364 million in revenues; Infrastructureas-a-Service (IaaS)accelerated by 62% year over year to reach revenues of $155 million. Once a total atheist when it came to cloud Oracle has changed its thinking and is betting big on this technology. Cloud was among the major highlights at the recently concluded Oracle India Partner Forum 2015 at Bangkok the others being engineered system, Oracle on Oracle and mobility. The Forum also provided its partners with the strategies, insights and resources they need to succeed and profit with Oracle. Namit Sinha, Senior Director, Alliances and Channels, Oracle India, started the session with an introduction on the Oracle India business. “Oracle India business has been growing very well in the last few years we have grown quarter on quarter… Our indirect business contributed to around 70% of the total revenue,” he revealed. He

further announced Oracle India’s three major initiatives for FY15which will revolve around Cloud, Oracle on Oracle and Platform innovation. Addressing the partners Mark Lewis, Senior Vice President, Alliances & Channels, Oracle APAC, says, “India is outperforming in Cloud market and partners have opportunities in terms of refer, resell, aggregate and orchestrate. You can specialize, deliver choices to customers, offer your solutions on Oracle’s public cloud and develop, market and sell complimentary cloud services.” He further referred to the engineered system as a massive and untapped opportunity in India. Platform as a service which forms as another constituent of its cloud services is the fastest moving area of Oracle and will move very quickly, says Lewis, due to natural legacy. For the next 18 months Cloud integration will remain the most critical area for Oracle. Here it hopes to leverage its platform innovation and says “is a huge opportunity not to be missed by the partners”. During the panel discussions leaders of different business divisions spoke about how the market is full of opportunity. R Srinivasan, Senior Director, EPM & BI, Oracle APAC, talked about how the analytics market has witnessed double digit growth and how it helps organisations to grow forward. Amit Malhotra, Head of System Sales, Oracle India highlighted the rapid growth

Its apps business which is all about SaaS has witnessed a triple digit growth in cloud and Nirajkaushik, VP, Application sales, highlighted how they are now number 2 in the cloud. With 150 people in sales plans are to increase this to 300 in the next 18 months. With the renewed focus on public sector, which is currently contributing 20% of the business, Oracle India is now looking at taking this to 40-50%. “Q3 and Q4 are looking good and we want to go deeper into ministries and are investing in replicable solutions, in branches in top 10 states and see a lot of potential,” says VineetKshirsagar, Senior director, government business, Oracle India.  ë

015 is very critical for Cisco in India as the company has resolved to work purposefully to enable its partners to address the customers’ requirements from all the relevant requirements– be it IOT, Cloud, Analytics, Security, Mobility, etc. The company has made it clear that it will continue to execute in each of these areas. B. Raghavendran, Director, Partner Organization, Cisco India and SAARC, said, “In IOT, we have identified close to 12 partners, apart from our traditional partners, like Wipro, IBM, Velosis, Compuage, Tata Agt, IL&FS, Steria, Intech, Bluster, L&T, Mahindra SSG, etc. Specially, Compuage has becoming the first distributor to do physical safety security specialization. Compuage will give services to its partners including pre-sales.” “From the Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) perspective, we have Wipro, IBM HCL Tech, Proactive, Dimension Data, Velocis, MIT, Netmagic, etc. are looking at building skillsets. So that tomorrow they can go and start integrating and positioning our APIC controllers in their customers place because they can bring application knowledge and infrastructure to build APIs to integrate this,” he added. From the security stand point, Cisco has identified 20 odd partners, with whom the company is taking them through the security specialization. These are the partners who are dealing Cisco products and also competition products. He added, “We have programme around that which cover SourceFire migration as well. By virtue of SourceFire acquisition, Cisco had a lot of partners so through the migration programme,

16

JA N U A R Y 2015

Cisco could enable them to adopt overall Cisco solutions.” From India stand point, Cisco is the earliest adopter of investing on the ISPs and MSIs. Raghavendran maintains, “India is a country, where we have tripled our investment from MSI stand point. We clearly felt that these are the next set of partners who can help us to build the ecosystem, which will enable our partners also to foray into the newer markets and complete the overall stack of ISV solutions.” These MSIs will look at large infrastructure projects like connected transportation, connected community, connected manufacturing, connected retail, etc., like what Coaxis is doing. It is taking a whole lot of information and converting that to decisions and actions. Raghavendran says, “What we are doing is addressing the customers’ relevancy. Infrastructure is becoming more and more intelligent for the customers to utilize. In this, a traditional partner who is working along with a partner like Coaxis, who is giving out the entire solution, creates a great value in the market. So in order to becoming the complete IT company, we should have the partners in place to address all the needs of the customers.” Cisco will certainly focus on all the market transitions including mobility, analytics, cloud and IOT. Cisco will address the mobility partners with our Unified Access portfolio. Cisco will work with ISVs for solutions like SAP HANA to create expertise with the partners to address the market with complete optimized stack. From cloud standpoint, Cisco will work on its

Intercloud strategy and build capability of the partners. So that tomorrow, when customers asks for all these, as a Cisco partner one can go and build the private cloud as a cloud builder or take one of the cloud builders and create private cloud for him or even take solutions from Netmagic and Cisco service and sell it. And even he can sell Cisco services including Meraki Services, Security Services, IronPort Services, Webex Services, etc. Raghu says, “IOT will split into multiple parts and Cisco has to enable all the kinds of partners to address the situation and front end the situation and work with others back to back. Therefore, I need a connected ecosystem to be built, wherein partners not only work with Cisco but also work with each other.” The marker is so big that Cisco does not want to compete with each other rather work with each other and does not want to allow the customers to go to the competition. In the complex market scenario, one needs to be very clear about the role of consortium. One has to address that from the conceptualization to implementation as a consortium because the complexity and visibility is so high, if there is no clarity of execution, the entire business model will go haywire. He added, “We will also keep focusing on all our programmes. We know in the past Opportunity Incentive Program (OIP) or Teaming Incentive Program (TIP) programme has been challenging but with the Guided Deal Registration (GDR) programme, we want to give partners the flexibility and ability to hunt opportunity in the market. So that they can get rewarded for the

“I need a connected ecosystem to be built, where in partners not only work with Cisco but also work with each other.” behaviour they put up. Also they can see all the programmes that Cisco is running so that with the limited intervention from the sales team, they can offer quote or pricing to bag the deal.

FINLLY… Cisco is ready with all the programmes and policies with government, to enable its partners to tap more and more customers who are looking for investing in modern technologies and solutions like IOT, cloud, mobility and analytics.  ë

BUILDING A SMART INDIA The smart city project is perhaps the biggest ICT project ever seen. he Modi government is moving fast towards making India, the hub for innovation. The most critical of the projects that the government has announced so far is the creation of 100 smart cities as satellite towns for large cities. For this ambitious project, a total of Rs. 7,060 crore has been allocated in the Union Budget 2014-15. India is slowing realizing the true potential of developing smart cities and the Government of India announced work initiation in 34 smart cities across 7 states and other cities are being planned. The government has also sanctioned smart city projects in the state corridors.

WHAT IS A SMART CITY? While there may be different ways to define a smart city, a simplistic way to look at it is as an urban region that is highly advanced in terms of infrastructure, sustainable real estate, communications as well as market viability. It is a city where information technology is the principal infrastructure and the basis for providing essential services to citizens. There are many technological platforms involved, including but not limited to automated sensor networks and data centres. In all these dimensions, information and communication technologies play a vital role. Without ICT, a smart city cannot function properly, and there is constant need for monitoring the IT infrastructure installed in a smart city.

“Every service in a city, ranging from energy management, pollution controlling, traffic monitoring, parking area monitoring etc., depends on network and communication services, forming a digital interaction between citizens and services,” explained Prashant Chaudhary, Sr. Director, Sales – State Government, CA Technologies. The IT infrastructure in a smart city, therefore, is required to be evaluated and monitored through a controlled data center that can distribute, allocate as well as track utilization of resources. Our vision for a smart city is to be fully equipped and to this end, we are constantly working towards developing systems that will help in integrating the same. Smart cities filled with sensors can monitor weather, pollution, energy usage, manage traffic flow, parking, and improve air quality, energy efficiency, and public safety. All these smart devices use a host of connectivity like Wi-Fi. Zigbee, Bluetooth, and mobile broadband technology. “These sensors collect real-time device data and influence decision-making and when coupled with other applications, it creates myriad possibilities,” said Prabhu Ramachandran, Director-WebNMS. “For instance, smart-parking integrated with connected car identifies available parking slots and offers the information to end users. Public safety can also be achieved through the utilization of sensors by warning the travelers on unfavorable weather conditions in a highway.” Similarly, in healthcare, IoT empowers doctors to spot early

BUILDING THE BACKBONE The success of the smart city will be determined by several factors including high speed broadband penetration, technology adoption by citizens, security, and privacy concerns. At present, India lacks a robust technology infrastructure for the implementation of smart cities. India still lags in Internet connection speed with 6.1Mbps and continues to have the lowest average internet speeds in Asia Pacific. While it is still too early to tell exactly the extent to which smart cities will truly take hold, one thing is clear: data centres will be their

backbone. For this purpose, Existing data centres which host mission mode projects can possibly be leveraged to extend the services being offered by them to these smart cities. There will definitely be need of setting up control centres in these smart cities which can get integrated to existing data centres in states. “In smart cities the efficient handling of massive amount of data is going to be one of the key factors, hence modular datacenter in place of legacy datacenter is going to play an important role. These new generation data centers are needed as there are certain pieces of information that are to be monitored by central government

CHALLENGES WITH SMART CITIES Breaking silos: Often most stakeholders/departments of a city are disconnected, getting them to work towards a common goal is a huge hurdle Viable business models: Setting up economic business models to fund the investments so that they are self-sufficient and

are concerns that still need to be addressed Governance: The role of local policy maker should be to facilitate win-win scenario by creating partnerships among entities with high synergies. The role of the city managers should be that of managing the relationships between all

of the partners from public and private sectors Ubiquitous information: Personalization of information dissemination for which city should create citizen / corporate profiles for every resident / corporate and make available tailored information. Ubiquitous information is

when at any moment or in any place tailored information is proactively delivered to its citizens (only those that want it) without the need for them to go and find it themselves. This is enabled by pervasive computing and the “Internet of things” Source:IDC

across domains, including energy, buildings, infrastructure and transportation for smart city and is now looking at partnerships in these domains. “Intel is looking at working with ecosystem partners starting from ODMs to system integrators who are key to helping build intelligent systems, modernizing the legacy infrastructure and safer security surveillance solutions,” said Satish Jadhav, Director – IOT, Embedded Sales Group, Intel South Asia. Chaudhary from CA said, “We will work closely with our partners to develop solutions which will focus on a wide array of things such as urban infrastructure, security, e-governance amongst a host of other things. We at CA Technologies work very closely with the Government on the smart city campaign. With technology constantly innovating, the government cannot work alone in this space and hence this opens a plethora of opportunities for businesses to thrive.”

PARTNER OPPORTUNITIES Smart cities offer myriad of opportunities for the industry. Collaborating with the channel partners is vital for smart city projects, believes Ramachandran from WebNMS. “We are growing strong in partner ecosystem and we are work closely with RTU vendors, sensor manufactures, and other service providers to deliver state-of-the-art IoT applications,” he added. Companies are actively looking at partnerships in the smart city domain as it will be impossible for one company to handle everything itself. “Smart Cities projects are likely to garner attention from suppliers and buyers of relevant technologies, companies and consultants involved in Smart Cities concept, system integrators, telco’s, banking and financial institutions, project management companies, media and advertising agencies,” said Shalil Gupta, Director Insights and Consulting at IDC. Intel has identified more than 40 solution areas

CHALLENGES The Smart City initiative is one of the most strenuous task undertaken by the government with a lot at stake. India being a diverse country with a vast population, brings with, its own set of issues which pose a hurdle in the government’s

ambitious plans. Firstly, the Smart City could take anywhere between 8-10 years to reach fruition and this requires persistence and commitment on the part of the government. In order to meet the desired deadline, clearances need to be issued in a time bound manner. Secondly, the Technological space is undergoing constant changes with newer and newer technologies coming into the foray and hence the government needs to be constantly in the loop about the same. The whole aim of the smart city is to enable people to enjoy sustainable economic growth and high standards of living. This will require people, entrepreneurs to actively participate in energy saving, implementation of new technologies and decisions to improve quality of life. This will require special programs to be undertaken to educate the people to follow the same. Another major challenge is the lack of skillsets and the need to train and develop a skilled workforce which will consume a majority of the government’s finances and time. Other challenges include the following: Low IT outlays, lack of customization, limited IT personnel as well as lack of administrative and political will.  ë

or last five-six year, VMware has been organizing multiple events in India. Important of them are vForum and VMware Solution Symposium (VSS), which to our belief, have emerged to be very successful ones to invite almost six thousand people - combined together. In a sense, today, VMware events are the largest IT events in the country. A L Jagannath, Director, Marketing, India and SAARC, VMware, says, “vForum is the signature event that we have done for last five years now. After the biggest vForum happens, we do smaller one-day forums in various cities. The vForum and VSS Forum follows the VMWorld, which brings latest content and announcements of the company to the market, which later on reaches to the larger customers’ base through all other forums. One of the key objectives of the smaller forums is to tell people about the latest announcements around partners and products.” The idea of VMware is to continue its software defined data centre (SDDC) and software defined enterprise drive aggressively and spread core messaging; as a lot of customers in India are traversing the journey from basic virtualization to the advanced hybrid cloud. Apart from this, the end-user computing is growing faster in the country and VMware is addressing this market through the new product – Horizon 6. The company is also focusing on the mobile computing piece through Airwatch solutions. Through the forums, VMware is talking about how Airwatch fits with its larger scheme of end-

This is extremely compelling proposition for the customers to attend our events,” he maintained. “Apart from that, the ecosystem partners who get associated with us in the events as sponsors also talk about their applications around VMware technology.” VMware also talks about its vCloud Air in the forums as how it can bring difference to the Indian enterprises. vCloud Air has already been launched in seven countries in APAC including Japan, Australia and China, where the company has tied up with the local telecom providers for the services. The company is planning to bring it to India during the second half of this year. VMware has also introduced VMware Evo: Rail -a Hyper Converged Infrastructure with smaller form factor. “Intel Looks at Partnerships to Build Smart City EcoSystem” SATISH JADHAV, DIRECTOR – IOT, EMBEDDED SALES GROUP, INTEL SOUTH ASIA BELIEVES SMART CITIES WILL FUNDAMENTALLY RESHAPE DAILY LIFE. IN

efits for companies, governments and individuals. Intel is continuing its efforts with the city of San Jose, as well several other cities including London and Dublin. We need to work to identify requirements for open interoperability and standards that define common architectures to connect smart devices, machines, people, processes and data. Smart city begins with putting technology into simple devices, because 80% of current infrastructure are legacy products or devices. Simply put, all those regular day to day things that you see around starting from lamp posts need to be made better by being made smarter and more connected, right out of the box. We need to focus on Digital intelligence which is the key to making life safer and more efficient. With millions and billions of devices connected through the smart city network, what importance do you think sensors and sensor networks play? Are you looking at partnerships in this space? By enabling gateway solutions & integrating them with the backbone ICT infrastructure, the intelligence used to extracted data will help arrive at meaningful decision making capability in a secure environment. Intel-powered gateways that collect, organize and analyse machine data can help turn insight into tremendous efficiency. Industrial organizations can leverage IoT solutions to help decrease time to market for new cross-enterprise service creation. With an API management platform, organizations can assemble, analyse and expose connected machine intelligence as a valueadded service. We have identified more than 40 solution areas across domains, including energy, buildings, infrastructure and transportation. Intel is looking at working with ecosystem partners starting from ODMs to SIs (System Integrators) who are key to helping build intelligent systems, modernizing the legacy infrastructure and safer security surveillance solutions.

A CONVERSATION WITH ENTERPRISE CHANNELS, HE SHARES HIS VIEWS ON THE POSSIBILITIES WITH THIS CONCEPT AND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT IT UNLEASHES.

What is Intel doing in building a smart city ecosystem? From an Intel perspective a smart city is where IT is the principal infrastructure and the basis for providing essential services to residents. There are many technological platforms involved, including but not limited to automated sensor networks and data centers. Though this may sound futuristic, it is now likely to become a reality as the ‘smart cities’ movement unfolds in India. This will take big city living to a new level

where 24/7 utilities services become an essential in public service delivery. Intel believes that the Smart Home will fundamentally reshape daily life. The home of the future will feature a variety of networked sensors, smart devices and intelligent services that will work together to increase people’s comfort, allow them to control their environments in new and different ways, and increase their convenience. We see cities as an opportunity to showcase the potential of IoT and how it can bring about ben-

What would be the key challenges when it comes to smart cities? Following could be the key hurdles for smart city implementation: l  Vision of local govt officials to drive technology change l  Prioritization of needs (problem statement) with resource allocation l  Lack of urban planning l  Need of public private partnership for sustainable execution l  Need for localization of services & customization to meet local needs l  Lack of seamless connectivity options  ë

“Network to Drive Smart Cities” WITH HIGHLY RELIABLE PRODUCTS AND WORLD CLASS SERVICES,UTSTARCOM IS CONFIDENT TO PROVIDE PERTINENT INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT TO TELECOMMUNICATIONS CARRIERS FOR EFFICIENTLY SERVICING THE RAPIDLY GROWING DEMAND OF AN ADVANCED ‘INDIAN DIGITAL HIGHWAY’.

The whole concept of a smart city is aimed at increasing the efficiency of city infrastructure, reducing related costs, optimizing resources consumption, improving quality of life of the city residents etc. – all of it through extensive use of advanced information and communication technologies. It is applied to many aspects of a city and city residents’ existence including transportation, traffic management, water, energy, environment, healthcare, public safety and so on. And all of it at the end of the day is about data: data generation, data collection, data delivery, data processing etc.

24

JA N U A R Y 2015

A real smart city deployment will require a smart metro network to guarantee reliable and efficient connectivity everywhere, every time and for everybody. UTStarcom focuses today on building cost-effective, SDN/NFV-enabled smart next generation metro access and transport networks. The future of networking will rely more on software, which will accelerate the pace of innovation for networks as it has in the computing and storage domains. SDN/NFV technology promises to transform today’s static networks into flexible,

programmable platforms with the intelligence to allocate resources dynamically. We expect to see such technologies used within data centre infrastructure of smart cities. And definitely they will bring lots of benefits to dynamic and adaptive telecom infrastructure of smart cities. Huge amount of traffic that is going to be generated within the smart city infrastructure, added to the explosively growing mobile broadband data traffic, the traffic of data centers, cloud-based applications etc. will create a significant challenge for the metro aggregation and transport networks. Current metro-level transport networks are usually multi-vendor and multi-technology, that often results in difficult operation and management, lack of flexibility and high OpEx. The next generation metro networks such as that offered by UTStarcom are based on the Software-defined Universal Packet Platform (SUPP) which integrates OSI L2/L2.5/L3 packet switching and native packet flow-based forwarding functions into the unified hardware platform, that help to dramatically reduce the complexity of Metro networks while offering CapEx and OpEx saving. An important feature for effective networks scaling and handling large amounts of traffic is support of high-speed interfaces like 100G. By introducing 100G to metro network, operators can replace expensive OTN and reduce the quantity of traditional 10G equipments in the metro, thus allowing service providers to simplify their metro networks and enjoy immediate cost, space, power consumption and operational benefits. With potentially huge number of city inhabitants, sensors and various devices to be connected, an efficient, scalable and manageable access network will definitely become one of the key factors to the successful implementation. Wi-Fi being a preferred technology of internet access today, with Wi-Fi modules found virtually in any mobile/smart device, in home appliances etc., may become a technology of choice to provide cost-effective means of connectivity for emerging IoT. With Wi-Fi technology being well standardized, we do not expect the need for any complex integration to enable sensors and other elements of smart city to work with our solutions. In a smart city network the end user requires miscellaneous connections with various SLA requirements. Explosive growth of traffic between data centers and cloud-based applications is dramatically consuming the bandwidth of metro network. It’s obvious that single point state data center will increase the bandwidth consumption and lead to network congestion and degraded service experience, especially for popular real time video applications.  ë

ndia is a very critical market for AirWatch. From the market perspec¬tive, along with VMware, the company brings in many solutions that make the entire software driven enterprise initiative in India complete. Ankit Sehgal, Channel Account Manager, APAC at AirWatch says, “AirWatch started operations in late 2010 in India with an R&D unit. But then we realized that the local market for mobility is evolving and people are embracing BYOD and mobility. That is when our leadership decided that we should set up our sales opera¬tions here.” So, in 2013, AirWatch started its marketing and sales office in India. Incidentally, its Bangalore office is the largest R&D office outside the U.S., which houses hundreds of people and is still hiring.” He added, “We are receiving phenomenal response from our enterprise customers as they are looking at mobility more seriously than before. Every CIO is asking for a mobility piece and for AirWatch, although the sales cycle is comparatively longer here as customers started defining their mobility strategy during the course of evaluation of our product, but that is changing quickly as market is getting educated and is evolving.” AirWatch has more than 1,000 customers in the APAC region. Ankit maintained, “We are growing in all verticals and seeing the channel interest and customers increas¬ing. The sales cycle is also getting reduced.” In addition to selling solutions to customers, AirWatch also provides consulting, as many

customers are in the evalua¬tion stage and are not sure what to adopt – CYOD or BYOD. Customers today are starting small from device management and gradually going for application management, content management, browser management, etc. There are also some customers taking advantage of the complete solution suite. Until mid of last year, AirWatch was selling products directly in India, but now the company is expanding its channel partners who can bring value to the products. Some customers are looking one entity to provide devices, applications and management. He added, “We have a pan-Indian sales force and with VMware we have strengthened our footprint in India.” AirWatch product bundles are colour coded Green, Orange, Blue and Yellow. Green products cater to the basic requirement of the customers, which is around MDM. The Orange bundle includes the AirWatch secure email client. The Blue management suite includes content and application management. The Yellow suite enables customers to edit content within AirWatch Content Locker, an enterprise file sync and share solution. Additionally, these products are avail¬able in à la carte basis. Along with flexible licensing options, AirWatch solutions are available in the cloud and on premise, which can address 25 to 100,000+ devices. The AirWatch solution is consistent regardless if the customer choses a cloud or on-premise deployment. Therefore, from the enterprise perspective, AirWatch solutions can address small to very large organizations with

“We are growing in all verticals and seeing the channel interest and customers increasing. The sales cycle is also getting reduced.” hundreds of thousands of employees. In today’s competitive market, what differentiates AirWatch is its commit¬ment to services and continuous development. Ankit adds, “Service support and continuous development along with our technology partner,s like device and OS manufacturers, is our key USP. We offer a single solution, single code-based products and single management console for cross platform and device types. Therefore there is no dependency on the third-party applications for customers.”

FINALLY… AirAirWatch is building up its operations in India and with VMware it is expanding in pan India. AirWatch needs is to continue to create awareness in the Indian market about mobility, as it cannot be left to any other vendor.  ë

The 8 predictions made are based on the latest IT trends that closely impact all of us since they co-exist in our personal as well as professional spaces like the Internet of Things, Geo-political interferences, attacks on iOS, newer authentication methods replacing traditional passwords, and more.

T

he Security predictions have been prepared with insights from the Cyberoam Threat Research Labs (CTRL). Cyberoam has published its Security Predictions for 2015. These predictions give an overview of industry trends and security challenges businesses are likely to come across in 2015. The Security predictions have been

prepared with insights from the Cyberoam Threat Research Labs (CTRL). The 8 predictions made are based on the latest IT trends that closely impact all of us since they co-exist in our personal as well as professional spaces like the Internet of Things, Geo-political interferences, attacks on iOS, newer authentication methods replacing traditional passwords, and more. New threat trends like malvertising,

exploitation of legacy protocols, et al, also share the spotlight among the predictions for 2015.

1

DARK CLOUDS OVER INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) This year IOT will gain wider visibility due to its advancements as well as vulnerabilities. As SCADA systems adopt IOT, their exposure to

SECURITY

cyber threats will increase. Remotely connected and automated building control systems also face a similar challenge. Around 2.2 million SCADA and BACnet devices are already exposed to potential cyber-threats as these are identifiable via SHODAN – a search engine for Internetconnected devices. Meanwhile, government safety requirements such as eCall (Internet assisted emergency reporting in vehicles in Europe) and consumer demand for seamless data connectivity have opened gates for Connected Car infrastructure, which is bringing automakers, telcos and the tech-giants (Google, Samsung & Apple) to a common drawing board. This is a classic example of IoT at work in our day-to-day lives. Meanwhile, mobile apps have started featuring in the Connected Car infrastructure and it is just a matter of time before the vulnerabilities are discovered.

2

GEO-POLITICAL INTERFERENCE

In 2014, the US Department of Homeland Security revealed a trojan named Black Energy affecting the nation’s critical infrastructure. Exploits of Syrian Electronic Army and Regin APT malware campaign also hit headlines. The Geopolitical landscape is changing dramatically around the world and Internet cannot remain insulated from its effects; in fact Internet has become a critical tool for government sponsored propagandas, espionage and cyber-attacks. APT malwares sometimes used in these campaigns grossly undermine legal boundaries. Such malwares were found waiting to be activated in networks of oil and gas pipelines, power transmission grids, water distribution and filtration systems, wind turbines and even some nuclear plants in the US. In such cases, large private businesses also come in the line of fire every now and then. If conditions deteriorate, which seems to be a decent probability in the coming year, there will be a larger impetus on cyber-attacks from the nations involved, some of which could be revealed during the year itself.

3

LEGACY PROTOCOLS ON TARGET

POODLE, Shellshock and Heartbleed are examples of vulnerabilities in code which sit hidden for years before been discovered and exploited. The legacy protocols on which Internet seems to run all so well are far from perfect and cyber criminals will continue to exploit the loopholes to their advantage. Some of these protocols being open source face a larger threat. Moreover, as the Internet makes transition

from IPv4 to IPv6, cybercriminals would hunt for latent security gaps. In addition to the vulnerabilities in web browsers, one can also expect client side attacks exploiting application vulnerabilities in widely used frameworks like Adobe, Java, thereby aggravating network security challenges for IT admins in 2015.

4

HEALTHCARE BLEEDS

Given that healthcare sector is making rapid strides globally in embracing technology and digitising patient care along with storing personally identifiable information, there is a need to strengthen information security. Securing Healthcare data is critical as it is at a higher risk given the fact that this data fetches much higher value in black market than credit card numbers, because it can provide access to bank accounts or help in obtaining prescriptions for controlled drugs. Healthcare sector needs significant improvements in its cyber-preparedness – a fact FBI made amply clear in 2014 when Community Health Systems faced a security breach leading to theft of 4.5 million patient records in the US. More such breaches are expected in 2015.

5

MALVERTISING AND ATTACKS ON EMAIL

2014 saw ad networks on reputed websites like Yahoo, AOL and Google being compromised to distribute malvertisements. Malvertising (placing malware laden advertisements on reputed/ popular webpages) is likely to become more of a nuisance in 2015. Ad networks are continually compromised and threat actors are relying on the fact that blocking every ad or testing every ad network is not a practical solution. Malvertisers are also at advantage as reputed websites (news and infotainment) are rarely blocked by office firewalls. Meanwhile, if reports are to be believed, Spam is on a decline. This is partly due to the fact that spammers have devised other advanced ways to land mail in the inbox, while others have moved on to sophisticated spear phishing attacks targeting individuals behind corporate firewalls. Nonetheless, the old tactics of crafting fraudulent mails around major global/local events is still profitable for Spammers. 2015 will not be any different in this regard, though one can expect to see some newer tricks for evading current email security solutions.

6

DEMAND FOR CONTEXT AWARE SECURITY Networks these days generate huge amount of

data. This data contains enough cues to offer patterns of human behaviour that can be used to predict and prevent cyber-attacks. However, comprehending and co-relating data out of various logs and reports to get meaningful information requires time and skills. Besides, it carries the risk of human oversight. Enterprises need a security model to harness this information and interpret network traffic to identify suspicious patterns and events. In such a scenario, Big Data analytics tools can offer huge help in co-relating the data with a given user model to spot risky users and trends in a network. In fact, BFSI organisations have already started leveraging Big Data based security analytics for early fraud detection and prevention. Employing the advancements in Big Data analytics, Context Aware Security solutions such as Cyberoam’s User Threat Quotient (UTQ) can help IT admins in tasks akin to finding a needle in a haystack – identifying a user posing security risk in a network. In 2015, such solutions will prominently be employed by organisations seeking actionable security intelligence.

7

IOS ON THE RADAR OF YBER-CRIMINALS

Mobile malwares will make a major impact in 2015, as more people are now using handheld devices to access critical business data from cloud apart from banking and payments. In this scenario, the new Android OS, Lollipop, will be put to test. At the same time, as enterprises embrace Apple apps and use of iOS-based devices grows, these are getting on the radar of cyber criminals. Recent trends suggest that in 2015, iOS will get hit by phishing attacks and malwares on a larger scale than ever before.

8

SOLVING THE PUZZLE CALLED ‘PASSWORD’ The quest for replacing ‘password’ as an authentication procedure will gain momentum. It is reported that an increasing number of millennials in the US prefer Apple’s Fingerprint Scan for authentication purpose. However, scaling up biometric authentication techniques like fingerprint scan is a big challenge. Moreover, standalone biometric authentication is not as full proof as thought earlier. Considering recent incidents of data breaches and credential thefts in mind, the FIDO Alliance recently released its long-awaited 1.0 specifications for passwordless and multifactor authentication systems. A major push to move away from passwords is likely to make hackers more than just shift in their seats.  ë

28

JA N U A R Y 2015

Improving Operational Efficiencies In 2002, Havells introduced Polycom’s video conferencing solutions in 24 Indian locations to communicate between headquarters, branch offices and factories. Prior to the deployment of video collaboration solutions, long distances between offices presented a challenge as many of its manufacturing units and offices are spread across the country and other continents. This meant significant travel requirements and less effective interactions between employees. As a fast-growing organisation with a global network of 91 branches and representative offices in over 50 countries, further improvements to operational efficiency, closer team collaboration, and enabling a flexible working culture were key priorities for the company. Beyond video infrastructure, Havells has a long history of field workers using Polycom audio conferencing solutions to communicate back to offices. In 2014, the decision was made to adopt wider video usage across the company, particularly to upgrade and redeploy existing infrastructure and connect all regional and sub-regional offices with headquarters. The upgraded video collaboration network is aimed at supporting business functions like Sales and Marketing, Finance and Human Resources to swiftly react to market opportunities and improve customer interactions while reducing Capex. “As a company with a strong global footprint and owning some of the most prestigious global brands, Havells remains unswerving when it
