Digital India Way to Developed India

S A N J AY M A H A PAT R A S A N J AY @ E N T E R P R I S E C H A N N E L S . C O M

It is a very good time for India as the top business men including Mukesh and Anil Ambani, Azim Premji and Sunil Mittal, shared dais with Prime Minister Modi when he launched ‘Digital Week’ and promised to connect 2,50,000 villages by 2019. Digitalisation aims to bridge India’s digital divide, bringing in large investments in technology manufacturing. As per PM Modi Digital India as a roadmap to change India’s future. He gave an example that a child used to playfully with phones and that means he understands this change or the world will pass us by. ‘E-Governance is going to change into M-Governance. Chairman Mukesh Amabani of Reliance Industries Ltd. explained that his company plans to invest about 2.5 lakh crore ($39.3 billion) in digital initiatives. He said, “Normally, industry moves faster than government but with Digital India, I have no hesitation in saying the government has moved faster.” But the push to connect India and drive a national fibre optic network, approved by the previous Congress-led government in 2011, has made slow progress in utilizing technology to bring services and deliverables to those outside large towns and cities. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that during Digital India Week, the government expects “billions of dollars in investment”, critical for a government that needs to create more jobs quickly. The government plan aims to stop net imports of technology and electronics by 2020, while creating over 100 million jobs. A growing economy and falling handset prices make India one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world, and PM Modi wants to harness that to drive social development in fields like education and health. The challenges are many. India’s average internet speed was ranked 115th globally earlier this year among countries studied by services provider Akamai Technologies. And India had just a little over 100 million broadband subscribers at the end of April. At the event today, Cyrus Mistry said the Tata Group would hire 60,000 IT professionals this year, and Kumaramangalam Birla said his Aditya Birla Group will invest Rs.44, 500 crore ($7 billion) in the next five years in the infra and digital space.  ë

Despite challenges Big Data Delivering Key Benefits to Organization The results of a Global Study ‘The State of Big Data Infrastructure: Benchmarking Global Big Data Users to Drive Future Performance’ commissioned by CA Technologies has revealed Enterprise Big Data strategies are delivering key benefits to around 90 percent companies despite noted challenges in implementation. Organizations are experiencing or anticipate seeing, more effective targeted marketing and selling campaigns. Additionally, 88 percent see or anticipate increased revenue, despite 92 percent of respondents citing obstacles to their Big Data projects. The study revealed the top five major obstacles to overcome for successful big data project implementation, that include insufficient existing infrastructure (32 percent), organizational complexity (27 percent), security/compliance concerns (26 percent), lack of budget/resources (25 percent), and a lack of visibility into informa-

tion and processes (25 percent). According to the survey, companies see Big Data as an important aspect of digital transformation in the application economy. Respondents report already seeing, or anticipating, benefits of increased revenue (88 percent), improved competitive positioning (92 percent), ability to provide new products or services (94 percent), and more effective targeted marketing campaigns (90 percent). Additional key findings reveals that virtually all respondents acknowledge that major investments are required to allow their Big Data projects to work well. ‘DATA DEFICIT’ IS A CFO’S ENEMY Over 46 percent of CFOs rely on “gut-feel” and instinct to make business decisions in lieu of fast access to accurate internal data, a practice that can delay decision making, introduce errors, and erode profitability. The research reveals that an inability to access the right financial information is having a direct impact on business performance and CFOs’ reputations. Of those polled, 45 percent say poor data hampers timely decision making, and inaccurate information is the main cause of organizational mistakes. Survey results demonstrate that a lack of financial information was also shown to negatively affect corporate profitability. The more the CFO relies on empirical data for decision making, the greater the chances of higher profitability. “Today’s business realities necessitate fast action and systems to support effective decision making. Mobile, social, analytics and many other technological innovations can assist organizations in this area,” said Malcolm Fox, vice president, product marketing financial management and services industry solutions, Epicor Software.

he digital universe is doubling every two years. But that isn’t a reason for worry for enterprises. They are buying more storage than ever but the problem lies in the management of this data. So while, there has been massive spikes in storage demand, the focus and the opportunity really lies in building solutions that make managing digital data less painful. According to IDC, Enterprise Storage Solutions would grow at 17 percent in next three years with Flash or SSD Storage individually. One can feel the promising nature of the market when one considers forecasts from IDC, which stated that we will witness a doubling of the digital universe every two years (about 70 percent per year) up to the year 2020. Enterprise Storage Market is bound to grow with growing arms of IT, Mobile Industry and growing needs of Internet of Things. While the demand for storage is still rapidly growing, vendors are

largely focusing on areas such as cloud storage, disaster management as a service, software-defined storage and convergence, hyper-convergence, clustered and hybrid storage service. Software defined storage revolves around reducing the cost of storage and increase flexibility of the system. As the usage of organization and their users increases, SDS provides matured, real-world models catering to different needs. On the other hand, the ever evolving technologies such as Internet of Things (IOT) and real time conversation applications are resulting in a need for complex clustered storage solutions in order to meet the customized needs. Converged storage solutions aims at creating a storage architecture which integrates storage and computing hardware providing speedy delivery time, optimize performance, minimize power and cooling requirements, explained Jignesh Upadhyay, Director, Presales – Service Assurance Solutions, CA Technologies. “Intention of Converge Storage is to blur the

lines between physical, logical and management barriers with storage and retrieval of data.” Similarly, catastrophic Disasters like hurricane, cyclone, and tsunami are inevitable hence organizations and channel partners prefer to set up their own disaster recovery system in place to reduce the CAPEX Investment. Explaining their focus on storage management solution, Upadhyay said, “At CA Technologies, we not only aim at providing Enterprise Storage Solutions but also managing tools for Enterprises and Individuals, provide mobile cloud solutions and much more. We always try to provide innovative and customized solutions catering to the plethora of needs of an enterprise.” The need to access the tremendous volumes of data that’s being generated, with minimal turnaround time has augmented the adoption of flash and hybrid arrays, and more private, public and hybrid cloud storage options, according to Barun Lala, Director, Storage, HP India. “Customers have a mix of applications with differing needs. For this reason, they need choices—so simplicity cannot mean loss of choice or other compromises. Enabling choice without compromise requires “polymorphic” storage architectures that can exist in many forms, shapes, and sizes,” he said. Organizations are often willing to make larger

investments in systems that reduce management complexity, save them time and money in the long term. For these reasons, storage vendors place greater focus on automation. Easier-tomanage storage environments not only reduce storage complexity, but reduce costs in the long run. According to Lala, consolidation needs coupled with optimization of storage infrastructure due to a sudden increase in both structured and unstructured data is driving organizations to consider solutions and products beyond the traditional route. “High priority on back-up and disaster recovery solutions across organizations due to reasons like compliance and regulations is also expected to generate demand for disk storage solutions.” According to IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Storage Tracker 2015, the need for high IOPS for workloads like OLTP, VDI and BI are driving the growth of flash storage across organizations in all verticals and segments.

FLASH BECOMES ALL-PERVASIVE The future is more in favor of all-flash rather than hybrid arrays integrating Solid State Disks and Hard Disk Drives. According to the Gartner’s Magic Quadrant report for solid state arrays the

increase in Flash arrays makes 20% of traditional high-end storage arrays to be replaced by dedicated solid-state arrays by 2019. Current analyst projections states that the flash industry reached approximately $30 billion in 2013. Adoption of flash storage is strong in India, driven by the increasing use of a broad spectrum of consumer electronics such as mobile phones, digital cameras, and personal computers. “When we compare Flash storage solutions with other traditional storage solutions present in the market the pros cast bloom over cons. With growing IT Industry supporting various needs of security, accessibility, flexibility, scalability, low latency, accuracy and efficiency flash storage proves itself fulfilling all expectations with utter commitment,” Upadhyay opined. “With Technology improving and growing leaps and bounds every day remarkable innovations and improvements promise better, faster and reliable Flash Storage solutions,” he added.

SMBS DRIVING CLOUD STORAGE Another trend in Enterprise storage is driven through opportunities in SMB market. According to Parallels SMB Cloud Insights report, the Indian SMB market for cloud services is estimated at Rs. 17 billion ($339 million), and is expected to grow 35 percent year-over-year for the next three years. This segment requires specific data storage solutions that are robust and secure. HP is accelerating the next era of storage for the New Style of Business with a single approach to storage that spans from entrylevel to high-end systems with common data services for block, object, and file workloads. “HP delivers systems optimized for primary storage, backup, and archiving—including software-defined storage solutions. The HP Converged Storage portfolio is designed to eliminate fragmented complexity with a single approach to primary storage, backup and archival. HP Storage solutions eliminate the boundaries between storage and the rest of IT, delivering simplicity and improving efficiency and agility in the face of unpredictable datacenter requirements,” Lala said. There is a paradigm shift happening in the customers purchasing behaviour. Across the board, customers (whether SMB or Enterprise) are expecting the same class of features on product-sets including service levels – so the bridge between cheaper and better is fast disappearing – and this is leading to explosive growth in mid-market storage segment. ë

P unveiled a series of innovations for the HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage family, including 25 percent lower cost flash capacity, a new class of massively scalable flash arrays, and flash-optimized data services to accelerate IT-as-a-Service consolidation and hybrid IT initiatives. To accelerate transformation to the all-flash data center, HP is lowering the cost of all-flash storage to $1.50 per usable gigabyte and introducing ultra-dense and scalable flash systems. The new HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage 20000 enterprise flash family boosts performance with over 3.2 million IOPS at sub-millisecond latency and consumes 85% less space than traditional high-end arrays for massive footprint reduction. To support mission-critical workloads and enable greater agility, HP is unveiling flash-optimized software for end-to-end availability and non-disruptive workload balancing across the data center. These capabilities build on an already strong set of tier-1 data services unmatched by competitive all-flash arrays. “Early flash adopters are seeing added benefits such as extreme savings and productivity enhancements that are leading to an all-flash strategy for more applications” said Barun Lala, Director, Storage, HP India. “HP 3PAR StoreServ is in a class of its own, with the affordability, scale and resiliency required for datacenter-wide flash adoption.” Customers looking to deploy flash for more of

their applications can now do so more affordably thanks to the industry’s largest capacity solid state drive in a tier-1 all-flash array. Combined with HP flash optimization and hardware-accelerated data compaction that increases usable capacity by 75 percent, these new 3.84 terabyte drives bring down the cost of all-flash storage to $1.50 per usable gigabyte, approaching that of 10K RPM SAS hard disk drives. When customers apply space efficient snapshot features like those in 3PAR StoreServ to the multiple full data copies used for developers and data warehouses, they can reduce capacity needs by 6 times, in effect reducing cost per gigabyte to $0.25. The new HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 family scales-out to eight nodes and is ideal for customers consolidating multiple racks of legacy high-end storage while assuring application quality of service. To simplify consolidation onto modern all-flash storage, HP 3PAR Online Import now supports simple migration from Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) TagmaStore Network Storage Controller (NSC), Universal Storage Platforms (USP), and Virtual Storage Platforms (VSP) Storage systems in addition to EMC VMAX, EMC VNX, and EMC CLARiiON CX4 storage systems. As per Barun, by virtue of 3.2 million IOPS, HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 Storage Systems offer faster performance than EMC EMC VMAX 400K, which is a hybrid flash storage, XtremeIO and products from PureStorage. But there are

“Early flash adopters are seeing added benefits such as extreme savings and productivity enhancements that are leading to an allflash strategy for more applications” other players including IBM, Cisco, Huawei and Nimbus Data, etc., which did not get any mention in his comparison statement. He maintains that there are new companies like Flipkart, Snapdeal and even banks who requires very high volume 3.2 million IOPS performance from the infrastructure because of the sudden surge of demand in the Market. At that point of time if the IT is not ready to support then the overall outcome becomes a bad experience for the customers. Therefore the launch of new innovation around HP 3PAR SoreServ is a better option for the customers and there are many takers in the market.

FINALLY… Further, HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 Storage Systems are available worldwide, orderable immediately and shipping in August 2015 for a US street price starting at $75,000.   ë

CASE STUDY / CLOUD COMPUTING

SAP Study: Findings Show Key to Cloud Maturity Lies in Enterprise-Wide Strategy The IDC study finds that many companies are naïve about how mature their cloud strategy really is. A key reason is the significant shortage in necessary IT skills and strategic approach, and the business-process change required to get to the next level.

SAP SE announced the CloudView survey and business value practice study developed by industry analyst firm IDC and sponsored by SAP, which shows how companies may be falling short in their cloud transformation journey. The study identifies key strategic issues and business processes to address the gaps. “Customers have found that they have managed the first phase of moving into the cloud – they have educated themselves and sourced new capabilities necessary to begin the journey,” said Robert Mahowald, program vice president, SaaS and Cloud Services, IDC. “The stumbling blocks are now at the managed and optimized level, with skill sets required that will allow the organization to focus on strategy versus day-to-day operations in faster time to provision new services, in reduced IT costs and perhaps, most importantly, in the ability to make more revenue.”

ROBERT MAHOWALD

PROGRAM VICE PRESIDENT, SAAS AND CLOUD SERVICES, IDC

The IDC study finds that many companies are naïve about how mature their cloud strategy really is. A key reason is the significant shortage in necessary IT skills and strategic approach, and the business-process change required to get to the next level. Implementing measures for collaborative business and IT governance, establishing consistent processes to identify which applications can best benefit from cloud and targeted education and training will help close these gaps. The study further finds that a cloud strategy is considered mature not only when a consistent enterprise-wide approach to cloud is driving business innovation, but specifically when the lines of business are involved up front in the process. Put simply, a collaborative approach between IT and the business, centered on the needs of the customer, is the single most important element of a mature cloud strategy.

ROB GLICKMAN

VICE PRESIDENT, SAP CLOUD AND LINE OF BUSINESS MARKETING, SAP

Cloud maturity is the point in an organization’s cloud transformation when it starts to reap real business benefits that go beyond IT efficiencies or TCO considerations. This includes developing net-new sources of revenue; engaging more deeply across employees, partners and customers; and using a more strategic and collaborative approach to IT that drives new value and greater competitive advantage. Organizations that have a balanced use of cloud – the best mix of external sourcing and internal transformation – are those where business units have the freedom, flexibility and agility to respond quicker to customer needs to drive revenue. It includes having the IT organization right there with them as strategic enabler. “Cloud is fast becoming a primary platform for business as organizations are freed from the constraints of building and maintaining their infrastructure and instead can focus on advancing their core business. IT runs a very real risk by not pulling in their business counterparts in their up-front cloud strategy,” said Rob Glickman, vice president, SAP Cloud and Line of Business Marketing, SAP. “And business units must partner with IT as their strategic arm to help them serve their customer and win – if not, business units typically go rogue and create unwieldy silos of chaos that destroy customer value over time.” As businesses move up the maturity scale, they will increasingly look to vendors who can provide a more complete set of end-to-end workflows of missioncritical applications, coupled with deep knowledge and expertise across industries and lines of business.   ë

The results clearly show that companies are adapting to the application economy at a rapid and accelerating pace, and are rethinking competitive advantage and differentiation in the process. According to the study, becoming a more software-driven business also has a positive impact on market share (47 percent), the development of new products and services (42 percent), and financial performance (36 percent)—all trends that respondents see accelerating. Additional key findings include: l More than half of respondents (51 percent) say they have invested in newer forms of software (mobile apps, API-enabled software, etc.) over the past three years, and nearly as many

say they will increase their level of investment over the next three years l 54 percent are developing new strategies for customer interactions l 49 percent of respondents are bringing more software development back in-house and 47 percent have or are planning to use M&A to increase app development capabilities, indicating software’s strategic role Earlier, demand outstripped supply and customer expectations were low. However, with digitalization, organizations delivering superior customer experience are experiencing better success, as compared to their competitors. Indian organizations need to focus on improving customer experience as it will be a key differentiator in today’s application economy,” said Sunil Manglore, MD, CA Technologies, India. Despite significant transformation of companies into software-driven enterprises, results from this survey indicate that the biggest changes are still ahead of us. Based on key insights from the data and interviews with respondents, the following seven points represent rules of engagement that companies should follow as they

seek competitive advantage: 1. Be ready to break things. When organizational change is inevitable, rules may get bent. And change is happening—fast. Nearly half of respondents believe that becoming a more software-driven business has had an impact on time-to-decision, and another 37 percent say that internal operations have been deeply affected. 2. Squeeze the value out of data. Respondents say they are proficient at marketing directly to consumers (59 percent say they are very or highly effective), but few (only 22 percent) have all the details—like tracking customer preferences—nailed down. 3. Learn to listen. Using social media well is critical to interacting with customers and business partners alike. More than 40 percent of respondents say it is a must-have skill in the new environment. One key thing to remember is that these tools are not just new ways to push information out—they are great ways to capture intelligence as well. 4. Guard data fiercely—and know what you are protecting. Protecting customer data is a fundamental rule of engagement, and compa-

nies are investing in bigger budgets and new tools to get the job done. Sixty percent of respondents say they are spending more to protect customer data, and even more are doing the same to safeguard internal information. 5. Bring innovation to collaboration. Old barriers do not apply in the application economy. Nearly half of respondents say that bringing together security executives with the heads of business units is enabling new business opportunities. 6. Give the people what they want. In the app economy, customers expect quick, intuitive interaction. They will not countenance outages, data loss, or downloads that take longer than a few seconds. With an enormous increase in revenue driven by customer interactions with apps expected in three years, getting this right is an existential necessity. 7. Remember that culture eats strategy for lunch. Organizational resistance is a given whenever change occurs. Nearly 40 percent of respondents say the biggest obstacle to becoming more adept at software and application development is a culture that won’t support it.   ë

CASE STUDY / TATA

Tata AIA Life Achieves Better Team Engagement with Avaya Solution Tata AIA Life has deployed a next-generation Avaya Scopia® video solution as part of a larger vision to integrate and improve business communication across its locations, networks, and devices. The company aims to drive better engagement among its teams, accelerate salesforce productivity and responsiveness while significantly driving down travel and training costs. n W O R D S : S A N J AY M A H A PAT R A < S A N J AY @ E N T E R P R I S E C H A N N E L S . C O M >

Challenges l Tata AIA Life aimed to be a bigger player in insurance l Better engagement among staff was key to the goal l A legacy video system limited communication within office premises l Travel cost was prohibitive. Benefits l An expanded enterprise network across 200 offices and diverse devices l Easy video engagement even with partners outside the company network l 25-30% reduction in yearly travel costs, reduced TCO

The Scenario Tata AIA Life is a joint venture between Tata Sons – the holding company of the Tata Group – and AIA Group Limited (AIA), the largest, independent, listed pan-Asia life insurance group in the world. Tata AIA Life combines Tata’s preeminent position in India and AIA’s presence across 17 markets in Asia Pacific. Tata Sons holds 74 percent (majority stake) in the venture and AIA, 26 percent. Tata AIA Life started operations on April 1, 2001. As a leader in life insurance, Tata AIA Life makes every effort to enhance its customers’ financial wellbeing as well as be the most trusted life insurer by providing

best-in-class solutions. Aiming to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience for all its customers, Tata AIA Life provides all relevant information that they might require at different stages of their association with the company. Tata AIA Life invests continually in the latest voice, video, and mobile technologies, so customers can stay connected with the company round the clock and enjoy a trouble-free insurance experience. Business Challenge Life insurance is a fast-growing industry in India, but it is also a highly demanding one. An insurance company with long-term

interests in this competitive market needs a dynamic workforce and must ensure its teams are equipped with up-to-the-minute information about policies, regulations, client databases, and market scenarios. Tata AIA is focused on making customer service an effortless experience for both customers and its own workforce. This necessitates the adoption of simplified yet worldclass team engagement solutions, so staff – as well as the company’s partners and distributors – can engage better, and deliver a holistic experience to the customer. This will also help bring products to market faster as Tata AIA aims to secure the number one spot in its field.

“WE WERE LOOKING FOR AN ENGAGEMENT SOLUTION THAT WAS EASY TO DEPLOY AND USE AND COULD BE EXTENDED TO CUSTOMERS AND PARTNERS OUTSIDE THE COMPANY NETWORK WHILE REDUCING OUR TRAVEL AND TRAINING COST. AFTER EVALUATING SEVERAL OEM PRODUCTS IN THE MARKET, WE CHOSE THE AVAYA MULTIPARTY VIDEO ENGAGEMENT SOLUTION BECAUSE IT FACILITATES SMOOTH AND CONTINUOUS COMMUNICATION.”

CASE STUDY / TATA

Life insurance products can be difficult to understand. Complaints about mis-selling can erode the public’s confidence in an insurer, making the situation even more difficult. Training agents effectively is key to the company’s ongoing success. Traditionally this has been a face-to-face activity, and while the results have been good, yearly travel cost in the range of INR 6-8 lac per person was proving prohibitive. As well as the trainers themselves, sales and business teams travelled frequently between company locations. Lengthy travel time and travel fatigue meant staff were defocused from core training and selling. In-person training at Tata AIA Life was complemented to a limited extent by a legacy room-based video conferencing system from a hosted service provider. The technology, however, was limited to no more than 20 locations, and was available only within the office premises. At a time when salesforces are increasingly mobile and using a range of personal smart phones and laptops, this aging communications infrastructure was failing to meet the needs of the workforce. The Solution Tata AIA looked at a number of criteria – including ease of deployment, use and management, range of operations, flexibility, and bandwidth usage – before choosing to partner with Avaya to deliver a video solution that would support its business goals. The decision was based on Avaya’s know-how and people, and the company’s position as a trusted advisor for team and customer engagement solutions. The deployment of Avaya’s Scopia video solution formed an integral part of a broader drive to integrate business communication across Tata AIA Life, regardless of the network, device, location or time of day. Tata AIA Life wanted to create a collaborative customer-facing organization that was more productive, responsive and, importantly, always-on. The Avaya solution has helped deliver that, putting video into the hands of the people that need it most, and on the device of their choosing – eliminating the need to come into the office for video meetings, enabling all staff to participate, and ensuring the rich team engagement experience that video provides can be easily accessed by every member of the team. According to Pradipta Patro, Assistant Vice President – IT, Tata AIA, “We were looking for an engagement solution that was easy to deploy and use and could be extended to customers and partners outside the company network while reducing our travel and training cost.

After evaluating several OEM products in the market, we chose the Avaya multi-party video engagement solution because it facilitates smooth and continuous communication anytime, anywhere, no matter what device or network our employees, customers and partners use. At the same time, the offering doesn’t require too much effort to install, enables connectivity across vendor devices, and is adaptable to change, now and in the future. It also scores high on the user experience front, a key indicator.” Benefits “Taking products to market faster is crucial to the company. This is where the Avaya solution is proving to be an enabler by helping engage employees seamlessly, improving their product knowledge and driving productivity overall” says Pradipta. Seamless employee engagement – anytime, anywhere, on any device: The Scopia Video solution from Avaya is accessible from anywhere (home, office, conference room, on the road), on any device (mobile phone, tablet, or laptop), any time. In a significant improvement over the past, the network has expanded its footprint to as many as 200 offices as well as diverse devices, using multiparty video conferencing. It can connect with external parties (customers), whether they are in the company network or outside it. The Avaya solution further facilitates easy-touse video engagement with business partners and distributors. In addition, the leadership presents monthly webcasts even while traveling, eliminating the need for additional third-party solutions. Employee meetings are now streamed live via video. The Avaya solution has freed users from the restraints of room-based video conferencing and brought into being an environment that supports seamless and feature-rich engagement with employees. Reduced training and travel costs: Thanks to the availability of a reliable, high-definition video solution for all, a trainer at one of the main offices is able to directly mentor someone at the branch, accelerating and simplifying the training process. The same improvement has been seen in the delivery of train-the-trainer programs and product training, in turn, making new product sales more effective. Importantly, yearly travel costs are down by 25-30 percent, and the company is seeing a significant reduction in total cost of operations, including bandwidth cost. “Controlling operational costs is very important for a prudent insurer. The direct cost reductions resulting from Avaya solution is estimated to be 25-30 percent and the change is

most felt in aspects like training, HR, audits, and IT,” adds Pradipta. Easy to use: Overall employees find Avaya video convenient and easy to use, so they are adapting well to it. It is building a shared sense of purpose in individual employees in ways that engage and inspire customers, partners and colleagues. The deployment has resulted in increased growth, especially in Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan. Future-ready: The Avaya solution brings next-generation preparedness to the network, and is flexible enough to evolve as technology advances, integrating seamlessly with newer unified communication solutions. No company wants to rip and replace its existing infrastructure. Avaya delivers a flexible and extensible engagement solution that can accommodate changes and enable cross-vendor connectivity, bridging old with new and past with future. With this, the insurer can scale business flexibly and rapidly while protecting existing investments in infrastructure. Tata AIA Life is now exploring how it can integrate video calls into its website – which will allow customers to initiate a video call with Tata AIA Life with a simple mouse click. This will help move the company into the new era of engagement and ensure staff can deliver a vastly superior customer experience. Much more than simply adding video collaboration for all, these world-class engagement solutions form a key building block as Tata AIA executes its strategy to emerge as a bigger player in insurance, capable of setting enviable quality standards and serving as a reference point for the industry as a whole. Thomson Reuters Analysis shows Concerning Trend for Global Innovation Company launches authoritative new web destination featuring industry insights and trends n S A N J AY M O H A PAT R A < S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N F O M E D I A . C O M >

T

he Intellectual Property (IP) & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading provider of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, announced the launch of its State of Innovation website: http://stateofinnovation.com. This is a global destination for authoritative innovation trend data and industry-specific insights focusing on the Lifecycle of Innovation and showcasing the iterative process of discovering, protecting and commercializing ideas. “Innovation is at the heart of the global economy. It is the lifeblood of business, but it’s difficult to measure,” said Basil Moftah, president, Thomson Reuters IP & Science. “By dissecting innovation to its core components – the scientific research that informs initial discovery and the patents that protect and commercialize new ideas – we can begin to identify important trends that influence the future of the global economy.” Stateofinnovation.com is the new, central destination for authoritative insights into the world of innovation, including the annual Top 100 Global Innovators and Citation Laureates. The launch of this website features findings from the business’s latest research: The Future Is Open: 2015 State of Innovation, an analysis of global scientific literature and patent data across 12 technology areas. It shows that although overall patent activity has reached an all-time high, yearover-year growth in new inventions has slowed considerably and scientific literature production has declined in almost every industry.

28

J U N E 2015

“The State of Innovation offers a unique view into the business of innovation building upon our leading position as a provider of intelligent information,” said Elise Finn, chief marketing officer, Thomson Reuters IP & Science. “We have created this new go-to destination and credible source of comment and insight for anyone with an interest in the world of innovation.” The Future Is Open: 2015 State of Innovation examines fundamental research and patent activity worldwide across: Aerospace &Defense; Automotive; Biotechnology; Cosmetics & Well-Being; Food, Beverages & Tobacco; Home Appliances; Information Technology; Medical Devices; Oil & Gas; Pharmaceuticals; Semiconductors; and Telecommunications. Thomson Reuters analysts scrutinized five years of global patent and scientific literature data, outlining the top companies, research institutions and technology areas producing the highest volume of innovation. Key findings from the 2015 State of Innovation include: l Year-Over-Year Innovation Growth Slows: Total, worldwide patent volume increased just 3 percent over the last year, the slowest rate of patent volume growth since the end of the global recession in 2009. l Overall Patent Volume Reaches New High: Despite the slowdown in year-over-year growth rate, total, worldwide patent volume has reached a record high, with over 2.1 million unique inventions published over the last year.

BASIL MOFTAH,

PRESIDENT, THOMSON REUTERS IP & SCIENCE

The industries showing the largest growth in patent volume were Food, Beverages & Tobacco (21 percent); Pharmaceuticals (12 percent); Cosmetics & Well-Being (8 percent); and Biotechnology (7 percent). l Businesses Embrace “Open Innovation”: Across virtually every industry studied, the trend toward “open innovation,” whereby companies partner with academic institutions, individual researchers and other companies (in some cases, even competitors) has been on visible display. l Traditional Industry Lines Blur: Driven largely by the rise of the Internet of Things, the traditional boundaries between industries and companies’ areas of specialization have continued to blur. Dozens of companies featured in the study, such as Apple, DuPont, General Electric, IBM, and Samsung, appear among the top patent assignees in multiple industries outside of their core areas of focus. Samsung is the most extreme example, ranking among the top 25 patent assignees in nine of the 12 industries analyzed in the study. “We are standing at a fascinating inflection point in the history of technological innovation,” added Moftah. “The organizations in this study clearly recognize the challenges inherent in continuing to break new ground at the pace they’ve maintained for the last several years. They’re taking clear strides, with strategies such as open innovation and aggressive expansion into new industries, to try to achieve even faster, better results.”   ë
