Social Media & Influence on 2014 Election

S A N J AY M A H A PAT R A S A N J AY @ E N T E R P R I S E C H A N N E L S . C O M

Indian general election 2014 is going to be over next month with that it will also end the slowdown in the market – this is what people are saying. The mandate will be given to a single largest party to govern the country and that party can take strong decision to bring India’s growth back on track. However, this is an unique election of its own rights. According to the Election Commission of India, the electoral population in 2014 is 81.45 crores, the largest in the world. There is an increase of 10 crores newly eligible voters. Plus, it is the most expensive general election in the history of the country with the Election Commission of India estimating that the election will cost the exchequer 35 billion, which makes it the world’s second highest expensive election after the US$7 billion spent on the 2012 U.S. presidential election. This election sees the usage of technology to the maximum. In January 2013, the Election Commission of India announced that it would be using an SMS based alert system called Communication Plan for Election (COMET) during the election. The system, aimed at sending messages to lakhs of government officials on election duty, was successfully deployed in the provincial assembly elections in Goa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Manipur in early 2012 and in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat in late 2012. The COMET system “uses coded text messages through mobile phones to collect data about officials, information about scheduled events like staff reaching the polling station, mock polls conducted, start of polling, voting percentages every two hours, number of voters in after voting time was over, and whether the poll party reached safely at the high security Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs) deposit centre.” The system also is sending alerts to the local police in case of disturbances at any polling station. Besides, this election sees maximum use of social media by all parties to woo the young voters. Plus, the voters are seen using social media to express their views. Today, there are 103 million social media users in India. A large portion of these users use their mobile phones and smart phones to access the social media. Today, India has 814 million voters with 1,104 million mobile phone users, out of this 104 million are smart phones owned by the urban users. As many as 93 million Indians are on the Facebook and 33 million on Twitter. This time 100 million voters have been added to the eligible list and they are all young and tech savvy. These people are very active in social media. So whatever the result might be, but the winning party cannot ignore the technology in the future. They will surely look at focussing on technology.  ë

Dell has launched brand new series of enterprise storage arrays designed for mid-sized fibre channel deployments, the new Dell Storage SC4000 Series. Available first in the Asia-Pacific region and planned globally later in 2014, it demonstrates Dell’s continued innovation to bring full-featured, enterprise-class storage to cost-efficient, high-performing, smaller-scale solutions, announced the release. As per Dell, the new storage array series, with an all-flash solution that can cost up to 76 percent less than competing pure flash arrays, is the latest addition to Dell’s customerdriven enterprise data center portfolio of purpose-built solutions designed to make IT more efficient and practical. S. Sridhar, Director & GM (Enterprise Solutions Group), Dell India, said, “CIOs of Indian enterprises with mid-sized workloads are required to optimize their IT infrastructure & remain ahead of their peers in providing world class services to their internal as well external customers, protect & secure their data & do all of this efficiently. HITACHI VIRTUAL STORAGE RECOGNIZED Hitachi Data Systems Corporation (HDS) has announced that Gartner has scored its Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) as one of two systems with the highest rating for every use case analyzed by the research firm. As per the release, the second system is an HP OEM version of the Hitachi VSP. The HDS Hitachi Unified Storage Virtual Machine (HUS VM), also performed at a high level in the use cases. Both products received “Excellent” ratings for product viability. As the need for critical data to be safely and securely stored continues to rise, the market’s competitive noise around product offerings also increases. Key findings from this report revealed that with the inclusion of solid-state drives (SSDs) in arrays, performance alone is no longer seen as a unique differentiator. The report presented a number of specific findings, including: “Product differentiation is created primarily by differences in architecture, software functionality, data flows and microcode quality, rather than components and packaging,” and “Security and concerns with migration and conversion costs between competing vendor arrays are less important purchasing criteria than performance, reliability, scalability and vendor reputation.”

ALLIED TELESIS HONOURED BY MILESTONE SYSTEMS Allied Telesis has won the Milestone Systems “Best Milestone Solution Partner” award for 2013. The release said that Milestone Systems recently held its second Milestone Partner Open Platform (MPOP) event in South Goa, India. The event was attended by Milestone Systems’ top system integration partners and several industry partners, and is a global initiative where

Reflections from a Year inside the OpenDaylight Project

Openness attracts a greater number and diversity of participants, increasing the likeliness of cross-fertilization of their ideas into new combinations. This strongly accelerates the variation that is necessary to produce evolutionary novelty. n MANALI MISRA<(MANALI@ACCENTINFOMEDIA.COM>

O

ver the past year, I have had the great honor of serving as the chair of the Technical Steering Committee (TSC) of the OpenDaylight Project (ODP), an open-source project which is comprised of a community of incredibly talented people who are singularity focused on building an industrystandard, open-source infrastructure for softwaredefined networking (SDN). This infrastructure is intended to enable an SDN application ecosystem that produces new and valuable applications for both service providers and users. As I look forward to all the things we need to tackle in a second year of existence, this brief blog summarizes my key learnings from our first year. While there was a bit of a “trial by fire” flavor to my introduction to the OpenDaylight community, the heat was quickly replaced by light, and three central ideas became clear to me.

OPEN-SOURCE MEANS MORE THAN JUST GITHUB The first of these ideas is that community is a

14

ENT Networking- Brocade.indd 14

key, if not the most important, component of an open-source project. More specifically, slapping an open-source license on your code and putting it up on Github (or wherever) is the most trivial part of open-source. In particular, without vibrant and growing user and developer communities, a project may nominally be open-source (again, the code has an open-source license and is up on a public repository somewhere), but in practice, the real power of open-source, namely innovation through collaboration, is lost. I’ll just note here that this last point, innovation through collaboration, is an incredibly powerful and transformational property and is unique to the open-source development methodology. The second key idea is that without code, you really have nothing. In particular, “code is the coin of the realm” for an open-source project. We can talk about problems, solution designs, and the like forever, but without code, we really have nothing. Good code speaks more loudly than anything else in an open source project. The last of the three ideas is that the tool chains (and more generally engineering systems, which include things like collaboration tools) that we

use are deeply integrated and part of our culture and community. They are key to our agility and productivity. In addition, development on the tool chains themselves (in parallel to development of a project’s artifacts) generates an amazing acceleration of the development process as well as facilitating deep automation. A corollary here is that “we need more code that writes code. More automation is better.

FINDING A SUSTAINABLE ADVANTAGE Now, if we step back and ask what is implied by these three observations, you begin to see an important and profound macro trend: Engineering artifacts themselves are no longer the source of sustainable advantage and/or innovation. Rather, sustainable advantage is achieved through engineering systems, organizational culture, and the people and process that comprise the community (and/or organization). Open-source community, code, and associated engineering systems are coming together in a way that is fundamentally transforming the network industry. But there is a deeper and still more profound

A P R I L 2014

ENTERPRISE NETWORKING

DAVID MEYER

CTO AND CHIEF SCIENTIST AT BROCADE COMMUNICATIONS

consequence embodied in these observations, one that is in fact turns out to be a core consequence of the open source development methodology. In particular, these trends taken together lead one to the conclusion that “what you build isn’t as important as how you build it”. And while of course engineers need to build quality artifacts that address real-world problems, this conclusion diverges radically from traditional hardware and software development and business models. Suffice it to say that this idea is at best alien to most of our industry. Why are development methodologies and associated engineering systems (“how you build it”) more important than the resultant artifacts? The answer is surprisingly simple. It turns out that what we are seeking from modern software systems is a combination of functionality, scalability, and evolvability. (After all, these three properties are the main promises of SDN, network functions virtualization (NFV), and, for that matter, cloud). And of course any artifact needs to provide relevant functionality and scalability to be useful. So the new requirement here is evolvablity. In any event, the open-source development

methodology is ideally suited to provide these features while at the same time taking advantage of the network effect provided to a successful project’s user and developer communities.

OPEN-SOURCE ATTRACTS DIVERSITY Note that open-source development also fully profits from the evolutionary dynamic of variation, recombination and selection. Openness attracts a greater number and diversity of participants, increasing the likeliness of crossfertilization of their ideas into new combinations. This strongly accelerates the variation that is necessary to produce evolutionary novelty (a.k.a. innovation). This large and diverse community moreover enhances selection, since the new ideas will be tested in many more different circumstances, thus systematically eliminating the errors and weaknesses that might not have shown in a more homogeneous environment. All of this leads to the greater flexibility, innovation, and reliability that embodies the promise of SDN, NFV, cloud, and beyond. My time inside ODP has fundamentally

“Note that open-source development also fully profits from the evolutionary dynamic of variation, recombination and selection.” transformed my views on how networks will be designed, built, deployed, and operated, as well as how they will evolve. I’m looking forward to working with the other members of the TSC and the larger OpenDaylight community to drive the project into a new, even more exciting phase of its existence. In short, I can’t wait to see what happens next.  ë

Elaborate on all aspects (features, pricing, advantages etc) of the enterprise offering/s. Zoho CRM for Large Businesses Zoho CRM continues to be one of the company’s flagship business applications. The latest enhancements to Zoho CRM include: •  Territory Management provides a powerful and flexible option for customer segmentation. Users can organize customers by grouping them together based on criteria such as geographic locations, industry type, expected revenue, product lines and divisions for better allocation of resources, and ultimately, exceed sales forecasts. •  Custom Modules let users tailor their Zoho CRM implementations, supplementing the standard sales, marketing and customer support modules with industry-specific modules that can be built without needing developer tools. •  Custom Functions (for workflow automation) let users automate business processes by capturing complex business logic in a function created using Deluge, Zoho’s scripting language. •  Social Integrations allow users to listen to and engage in customer conversations without leaving their Zoho CRM account. Facebook and Twitter profiles are contextually integrated inside Zoho CRM, so users can connect better with their prospects and customers.

What is your advantage/USP vis-avis your competitors? We offer a complete suite. There aren’t many vendors who offer from CRM to Mail to Email marketing to Help Desk to Project Management to Business Intelligence to custom web app creation and what not. And each of our applications can be used standalone too. We excel in both breadth and depth.

Zoho Support for Large Businesses Zoho Support is one of the fastest growing business applications in the Zoho Suite. The latest additions to Zoho Support include: •  Cloud Telephony for Zoho Support brings the traditional customer service telephony system into the customer support application. Cloud Telephony allows users to hook up a customer service phone number to receive calls within Zoho Support. •  Mobile Apps for both iPhone and iPad allow users to offer customer support from any location. Support agents can quickly respond to support requests using response templates, and support requests can be assigned to other agents with Quick Assign. On the pricing side, our Enterprise edition of CRM costs $35 per user per month. Salesforce’s Enterprise edition costs $125 per user per month (their top edition costs $300 per user per month). Some of our resellers are Reseller Partners - https://www.zoho.com/partners-resellers. html#india In India, other than reseller partners in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore Bangalore, we have a large distributor partner in Ingram Micro. We also have Tata Communications carrying a rebranded version of some of our services like Zoho CRM, Zoho Recruit, Zoho Invoice.   What is the future product road map for enterprise market? We will continue to add new Enterprise level

Australia, we have started making a breakthrough in the Indian market (around 5-7%) with our products. Zoho’s Support and Sales teams are based out of India and cater to customer’s needs, across the globe. We are expanding on sales and marketing along with strategic partnerships that will help us reach a wider audience.   How much revenue share comes from the Indian market? Approximately 5-7% of the total revenue. It is still a growing market for and we have a primary focus on it.   ZOHO’s entry in India was pretty late. How do you see the potential of Indian market for SaaS and IT-mobility? India is definitely one of the fastest growing markets for Zoho. However, IT adoption is still in its early stages, particularly cloud applications. That is obvious, as adoption of cloud applications depends on internet adoption, which still has some way to go. The proliferation of smart phones and tablets in India is making the cloud come closer to end users as well as business users. So, India will be an important growth market for

features to our CRM, Support and Campaigns. Other Zoho services are gradually moving up the ladder. Let’s say a Zoho customer starts with CRM or Support. Within one year, this customer is aware of the entire Zoho suite, and starts using 4 to 6 other Zoho products. So, an enterprise customer of Zoho CRM will start looking at one or more products, and thus those products will have to scale as well.   Which region/country is the largest revenue contributor for ZOHO? Primarily targeted at small and medium businesses looking to expand their online presence, we have also started to serve the larger enterprises. While a majority of our customers are in the US and Canada (around 50%), followed by Europe (primarily the UK),

Zoho for the next couple of years, especially the consumption of cloud services via mobile and tablets.   What are the initiatives to strength your presence in India? We are increasing our marketing activities in India. Our PR/Media outreach has been on for the last 2 years, and it has helped in customers/ end users knowing about Zoho. Our reseller partners along with our major partners like Micro Ingram and Tata are helping to expand our business and we are actively looking at having more partners. We are planning to host Zoholics, Zoho’s annual user conference, for the first time in India in September 2014 in Bangalore. We believe this event will help to get the Zoho name out even more among the business community.  ë

“Unlocking the potential of network” THE GROWTH IN THE SDN MARKET WILL BE DRIVEN BY COMPANIES WORKING TOWARDS SOLVING EXISTING PROBLEMS WITH NETWORKS – SECURITY, ROBUSTNESS AND MANAGEABILITY. ENTERPRISE CHANNELS SPOKE TO SAJAN PAUL, DIRECTOR – SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, INDIA & SAARC, JUNIPER NETWORKS, TO GET AN INSIGHT INTO THE SDN AS A TECHNOLOGY.

A lot is being talked about Software-defined Networking these days. What are your views on this trend? Software-defined Networking represents the biggest change to the network in many years. What

18

Q&A-Juniper Networks.indd 18

makes SDN interesting is the transformation that it can enable. Businesses are looking for more control over their applications on the network. SDN promises to deliver agility and simplification in the network to support applications. With SDN, the network becomes more efficient and

agile, and an enabler for delivering on business goals for application performance.   What’s the current level of awareness towards SDN in India? Has the deployments of these technologies started happening in this region? Presently, SDN in India is still at a nascent stage. Globally, the SDN market is estimated to grow from $198 million in 2012 to $2.1 billion in 2017 at a CAGR of 60%, and we expect it to gain traction in India in the next few years. However, we have received a lot of interest from the CEOs and CIOs of some of our largest customers in the telecom and services space for Software Defined Networking, on whether they should be testing, what it can do for their business etc. At Juniper Networks, we want to work with it our partners. The idea is to enable companies to

MY VIEWS

accelerate the design and delivery of new services, lower the cost of network operation, and provide a clear path to new implementations.   What are the major forces that will drive the market for SDN as a technology? Traditional networks are inflexible and static, and not designed for programmatic control. Network functions were hard-wired into chips, control and data planes were tightly coupled, architecture was monolithic, configuration was device-specific and generally manual, and there were no well-defined APIs for sharing data path state with applications. This means that running these networks is challenging-both complex and costly-and deploying new applications and services takes way too much time. The need for software defined networking (SDN) is clear. SDN is about using the power of software to unlock the potential of what’s going on in your network. So customers no longer want human interaction in the network. They need to be able to scale up and scale down quickly. They also want new services which can be turned on and off dynamically. Therefore, Juniper Networks finds itself is in a very unique position.   What all benefits that enterprises can reap by adopting SDN? SDN holds a great opportunity as businesses today are becoming increasingly dependent on the network with everything beginning to move online. At the same time, existing networks are becoming increasingly complex and expensive to change and manage. These challenges have created an opportunity for SDN as it promises to help cut costs, and improve flexibility and innovation. IT allows businesses to use less expensive switches while more control over the network traffic flow. It creates more flexibility by replacing necessary hardware changes with software updates. Some of the immediate benefits of SDN include – simplification of network design and addressing scale and complexity, business agility and lowering costs, application innovation and network programmability, greater innovation in hardware, multitenant networks, and service chaining.   What are your efforts towards propagating these benefits amongst the enterprises so that the market witnesses maximum deployment? Juniper Networks is the only networking provider with a SDN strategy that addresses the key challenges customers face with networks

today and provides a clear set of steps that can enable customers to start taking advantage of the promise of a SDN-enabled network. Juniper Networks recently announced the availability of Contrail, a network overlay platform for software-defined networking for enterprises and cloud and service providers. Contrail is a production-ready SDN solution that is based on stable and proven networking standards. Contrail creates a virtual network, enabling seamless integration between physical and virtual networks while providing service providers and enterprises with a solution that is simple, open, and agile. This network virtualization and intelligence solution has been in trials with more than 40 global customers.   What all opportunities do software-defined technologies bring for you as a technology vendor/ service provider? Highlight your offerings in these areas? At Juniper Networks, we see SDN Open Source and proprietary technologies fast becoming reality in the enterprise market as well. The philosophy behind SDNs is simple: leverage the power of software to give businesses more dynamic, fine-grained control over the performance and

lower the cost of network operation, and provide a clear path to implementation. The SDN strategy is rooted in six principles that directly address the most pressing networking challenges facing the industry today. Juniper Networks is expanding its SDN portfolio with new software and hardware to help service providers build high-IQ networks and cloud environments. These networks are secure, automated and scalable, enabling rapid service provisioning based on actionable intelligence. To assist customers with the transition to highly customizable networks, Juniper Networks offers a full range of professional services. These include assessment, planning and migration services to support customers with roadmap development, design, deployment and integration with their existing service provider operations.   How are you ramping up the channel strategies around softwaredefined technologies? In 2014, we will continue to leverage on the Partner Advantage Program to help our partners differentiate their brand, enablement and offer rewards for value and performance. We have designed the program to help our partners cultivate deep customer relationships

“SDN HOLDS GREAT OPPORTUNITIES AS BUSINESSES TODAY ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY DEPENDENT ON THE NETWORK WITH EVERYTHING BEGINNING TO MOVE ONLINE”

behavior of their networking hardware. We feel that the SDN will slowly start to move away from its present formative existence to addressing challenges currently faced by the network as it evolves to support critical business applications. With the level of visibility and control anticipated with SDN, providers could streamline security processes, ensure consistent configuration and policy enforcement across wired and wireless network infrastructures, and better demonstrate to customers that they can mitigate the complex threats that exist in clouds today. Taking this into cognize, Juniper Networks introduced the most comprehensive vision in the industry to transition enterprises and service providers from traditional network infrastructures to SDN and outlined its strategy to lead the market. Juniper’s SDN strategy will enable companies to accelerate the design and delivery of new services,

and at the same time, effectively respond to the macro trends that are driving charge across the entire industry. Together, the components of our Partner Advantage Program represent the next evolution of our partnership. We engage with customers on a deeper level – and thereby help them respond to the massive shifts that are shaping the future of network architecture. Our channel programming has been all about scaling with precision, investing with impact, and recognizing achievement. The Partner Advantage program I mentioned earlier is a tool for growing network architecture expertise, and differentiating partners based on the value they add. Bottom line, it’s about evolving the standards of industry education and resources to help our partners adapt to the architectural conversations they have with customers.  ë

he Indian parliament election will be over by May 2014 and this time the country is expecting a stable government with absolute majority for one party. We already have a figure of Rs.50, 000 crore ICT market from government sector. In addition to this, there are BFSI, Telco, enterprise, SME and home sector, which could add another Rs.50, 000 crore to the market from pure domestic perspective. Today, tens of thousands of residential housing projects are coming up in around all major cities with all modern amenities. These

J N Mylariah, Managing Director at ADC India Communications Ltd., says, “Increase in demand for high bandwidth cabling solutions would increase the demand in 10 Gbps cabling systems. High-end applications /DC Solutions cannot be supported on conventional cabling and will require a truly integrated structured cabling infrastructure which has high performance, secure, modular, scalable & reliable, most of the DC managers look at flexible cabling solution which helps them to migrate easily just by plug & play for both 10G Copper & Fiber solutions & also meet the high density requirements.”

India’s ICT growth for next 4-5 years will be driven by aggressive growth of infrastructure. The cities are getting connected with the rural areas though high speed cable infrastructure, applications on demand is catching up and cloud computing business differentiators. In this situation, structured cabling market is bound to grow in double digit. n W O R D S : S A N J AY M O H A PAT R A < S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N F O M E D I A . residential facilities are adopting FTTH to make all their data communication, telephone and DTH connectivity. Plus the enterprises are also implementing Fibre for their last mile connectivity. Today the banking, telecom, Govt., Manufacturing sectors & IT sectors are expanding their operations and implementing fibre solutions. A lot of Datacentres are coming up to accommodate the IT needs of the enterprises. Education and hospitality sectors are leading the race of adoption in the SME sector apart from the traditional IT, Telecom and government sectors. But the growth in3G, 4G/ LTE, etc. is seen as competition to the structure cabling market. However the fact of the matter is that these wireless services are pretty costly for the volume and speed of data communications. On the other hand in order to provide high speed connectivity the back end would certainly be structured cabling. Alamuri Sitaramaiah, Managing Director, India and SAARC, CommScope, says, “According to a recent study by U.K.-based Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA), the global structured cabling market comprising both copper and fiber cabling solutions - is expected to touch $8.3 billion in 2020 (from approximately $6 billion in 2012). India is no exception to this growth. “The structured cabling market continues to evolve both in India and globally, driven by the increasing adoption of cloud computing, growth of virtualization and mobility which continues to transform businesses today. Given the demand for higher bandwidth as a business critical need, CIOs and IT managers no longer view structured cabling as an isolated component, but as an integral part of their larger network infrastructure,” he adds.

However there is an expectation that in countries like China, the U.S. and other global markets, and, increasingly in India, customers are keen to deploy infrastructure that will support 40G in 2-3 years and 100G in 5-10 years. These customers are building their infrastructure for the future with clear upgrade paths and network intelligence built in while reducing installation costs over time. Event IEEE has already formed a 400 GbE Study Group in March this year, Goal is to provide physical layer specifications which support the following link distances: −  At least 100m over MMF −  At least 500m over SMF −  At least 2km over SMF −  At least 10KM over SMF & at the same time study group for 40 Gbps Ethernet over balanced twisted pair, goal to meet Up to at least 30 meters which could be of great use in DC. Therefore to achieve the measurable performance for highend applications service providers will adopt the Long Haul Fiber solutions. Structured cabling solution would handle triple play far more effectively than before. This means offering new applications such as videoconferencing, public address system, and IP telephony using the common infrastructure which has definitely increased the growth potential for structured cabling solutions. Data intensive applications including videoconferencing require highly bandwidth-intensive networks with reliability and redundancy. The LAN cabling depends on the applications used, which will only be more demanding in tomorrow’s

THE CIOS AND CTOS IN INDIA SHOULD LOOK AT SUPPORTING NOT JUST DATA, VOICE AND VIDEO ON CABLING SYSTEMS, BUT TO INTEGRATE BUILDING FACILITIES ON IP NETWORKS.

enterprises. With the specified technologies requiring higher bandwidth on WAN, there is definitely a need for higher bandwidth on the LAN as well. This is further emphasized with progressive and demanding applications that require not only higher bandwidth, but also reliability and redundancy with future-proof networks. These requirements can only be achieved with high-end structured cabling solutions that offer the flexibility to support future applications and technologies with very high reliability. As applications become increasingly data intensive, Quality of Service will be a priority. Nowadays there is a move toward providing multiple applications like data, voice, video, videoconferencing, IT applications etc., and hence there is a need for robust networks. These networks have to be properly planned and implemented.

FIBRE VS COPER Fiber-optic is the dominant type of cable for connecting separate buildings on campuses and connecting Floors distributors to Building Distributors & Data Centers, because of its high cost on the LAN equipment side it has been limited

to the BACKBONES & by default on FTTX for triple play service. If we compare the cost of a Fiber port on the active equipment and that of Gigabit Copper port on the active equipment, the fiber is expensive. Within DC segment Fiber-Connected Device Ports Already Exceed Copper-Connected Ports in Every Major Global Market, within India the ratio is almost 54% of Fiber where as 46% of Copper. Some also predict that by 2016 over 85% of the connections made in the data center will be over Fiber. Prime drivers are space, cost and power consumption & for major content provider, Video on Demand services is driving an increase in the number of servers and the amount of disk storage. Reduced latency is the key to delivering the Quality of Service viewers seek. Apart from the innovations in terms of increasing throughput using the existing infrastructure, there is always Today, both Fiber and copper have major advances in bandwidth capability. To support the next generation of LANs at 10/40/100 gigabits per second, multimode Fiber has advanced to new levels to support laser-based systems where

as the industry has UTP/STP cabling that will provide at least a three-fold increase in bandwidth, but the limitation is the distance compared to that of optical Fibers media.

STATUS OF FTTX FTTX is gaining momentum & expected to be very successful, from the last three years there has been lot of activities happening around FTTX in the country with installation in progress at selected locations. According to FFTC council report, the demand for FTTH in Asian countries including India is rapidly growing, thanks to the strong need for communication. FTTH would give subscribers limitless possibilities by serving the requirements of bandwidth-hungry applications and this would revolutionize the way subscribers work, live and play. Apart from this, implementing a future-proof medium to build and grow connectivity platforms will allow Indian entrepreneurs to quickly reach out to opportunities created by the current global crisis.

FOCUS OF THE VENDORS When ADC is looking at the importance of managed connectivity system and its components, including the Media” for the complete link from the heart of the datacentre to the device, CommScope opines that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) can be a disruptive technology for cabling vendors. However, the new IEEE 802.11ac standards now support 6.9 Gbps speed using the 5GHz band. Such access points will

see the need to support 10G or Cat 6A cabling systems at the back end. Also, IP Convergence or Internet-of-things is enabling automation of access control, surveillance, building management systems, fire and lighting controls among others. This has led to integration of sensor networks and leveraging of intelligence (analytics) from these networks to help businesses manage building space and energy more efficiently. This convergence of the building facilities with IT management requires higher throughput, driving to faster adoption of 40G and 100G network speeds. Lastly, with more number of sensor networks and Wi-Fi networks, cabling systems have to be able to support higher powering capability for Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices that connect to the end of these cables. Work is, currently, underway among standards to be able to support up to 100W for PoE. When CommScope works with its customers as a trusted advisor to understand their problems and help them in figuring out the best solution for them, its recent acquisition of iTRACS can now enable its customers to automate workflows, empower them with knowledge-based decisionmaking, and maximize operational efficiency.

Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) offers 3D visual modelling, a complete visual representation of the entire physical layer ecosystem, including energy consumption, thermal conditions, network connectivity, power connectivity, and can incorporate additional statistics like server performance and storage capacity. Another offering is Data Center on Demand. With the unprecedented pace of technological evolution and the continuous need to drive down costs, many organizations are looking to reduce their total cost of ownership and simplify operational management by deploying a pay-asyou-grow data center solution. With numerous available options, Data Center on Demand offers customers a tailored approach to addressing the needs of today while providing the flexibility to adapt with the business needs of tomorrow. As a manufacturer ADC India Communications’ strength lies in customer centric activities - on what customer needs- from training and education to the networks they need; our strategy has evolved to meet the standards of discerning end-users mainly from products, to solutions and to services. It offers the complete Plug & Go approach products for both Copper & Fiber (MPO & MPOptimate) & the world’s best in

Intelligent cabling solution which opens up the ability to manage the physical infrastructure more efficiently & has the world’s first managed connectivity solution based upon connection point identification technology, Quareo is a connection point identification technology which provides unprecedented knowledge about the network including accurate documentation and reporting of changes, as well as enhanced security; Quareo enables higher availability while lowering operating costs for a network.

FINALLY… When the market will grow faster, it will take the ecosystem on its stride. The channel partners, the integrators and training organizations - every organization will be beneficial. The partners which were ignoring passing products should now change their views towards this segment. Plus, with more Internet of Things happening, the CIOs and CTOs in India should look at supporting not just Data, Voice and Video on Cabling Systems, but to integrate building facilities on IP networks, and to leverage the analytics that come from such an integrated IT and facilities play to effectively use space and energy in the building.  ë

ICT IN HOSPITALITY

The More ICT Integration, the More Satisfied Guests ICT has changed functionality of all the vertical industries and hospitality industry is one of them. It has not only changed the customers’ experience but also has multiplied the operational efficiency of the users. But with the evolution of ICT technologies and applications this industry is going to leverage it to its advantage. n W O R D S : S A N J AY M O H A PAT R A < S A N J AY @ A C C E N T I N F O M E D I A . he ICT technology has certainly brought in a huge difference to the services of the hospitality industry. Not only has it helped the industry to expedite its services but also has brought in convenience to the customers in terms of their reservations and cancellations of rooms and halls, tour packages, tickets, taxies, etc. The entire ecosystem is getting benefitted out the ICT integration be it hospitality industry, customers, tour operators, flight operators, travel agencies, etc. Today, you can book a flight and a hotel from a single website with a single sign in. You pay to a single company then and there your hotel is booked. Even if you want to take a package deal, you are also able to do so. The biggest change is that you need not to go to any travel agency office physically or pay him in cash to get all these. You key in your credit card number and you are done. Today the convenience to the users has come to an optimum level. Sitting in front of their PCs or smart phone – even you have the apps downloaded to your smartphone or PCs, it is better – you can do the transaction with ease. You can choose your options taking your own time at your own convenience. In the hotel industry applications including

24

Feature.indd 24

check in, check out, room services, communications, and entertainment – everything is undergoing a sea change. The guests are not standing on a queue to check in or check out. The front desk executive scans the ID of the guests and gives them the access card for the floor and the room and that’s all. Even there are hotels where you do not see the front desk. You use kiosks for your check in and check out. You make key less entry into their rooms and do not ring a phone number to call the room service; a press of button calls the room service or laundry. All these convenience coming to the users these days are because of the strong back-end integration of hardware, software and applications. The industry is using ERP and CRM extensively. Cloud computing is facilitating the industry the ease of usage and flexibility of pulling and pushing data with ease. Today, the front desk managers are not taking paper documents as identity proofs. They are scanning the ID cards and pushing that to their central servers to be used by ERP and CRM applications. So the next time the guest comes to the hotel does not offer the ID card again, plus on regular basis the guests receive updates about the hotels’ offerings. With

the help of Unified communications and Wireless networking the guests are feeling comfortable. Even there are hotels which are giving tabs to the guests loaded with information about the city. Today, the digital signage have replaced normal thermocol signage. The televisions that you have in the rooms do not only offer you entertainment but also offer you entire information about the hotel and its amenities. TCS believes the hospitality industry is in the midst of global evolution. In today’s fast- changing global marketplace, hotel companies are striving to articulate, adopt and deliver the brand promise consistently throughout the value chain and across all stakeholder groups. Avaya’s, Director for SME, Mid-market & Solutions - MEA, Turkey & India, Khalid Khan, said, “ICT plays a key role in any hospitality project and owners and operators spend a lot of time & energy in deciding what solutions they will need. It is critical as, among other things, technology plays a key role in raising guest satisfaction and operating business efficiently.” Technology can play very important role in increasing the productivity of staff, reducing operational expense & improving guest experience. As an example, features like IM/

Presence can help room service staff to handle multiple jobs efficiently & faster instead of just relying on voice. To further improve the service levels a hotel can deploy automated tools to avoid dependency on operator to answer calls and manage jobs for room service staff, restaurant, bell desk etc. In addition to that, decision to invest in a technology is based on interoperability with multiple technologies. As an example, telephony will be integrated to property management system so that guest name is updated on room phone as the guest checks in or checks out. This helps to greet guests by name when they call for various services. This also helps in automatically updating the telephony charges, internet usage, minibar consumption to the bills so that its ready as soon as a guest requests for check out. As per TCS hospitality industry has leveraged technology to overcome the challenges: n  Reduced operational and support cost by improving efficiencies through process excellence and technology excellence n  Provided consistent brand experience to customers by ensuring scalable infrastructure, repeatable processes and integrated systems n  Delivered truly differentiated customer experience by creating enterprise frameworks and making use of smart technology to provide

a seamless view of the customer across the value chain and at service-delivery touch points, including those managed by channel partners n  Simplified infrastructure management and operations by leveraging virtual environment that allow properties to greatly reduce physical hardware assets on-site ICT solutions like telephony, data networks and mobility applications directly impact guest experience, providing seamless experience across platform. Guests like to use the devices of their choice when travelling for holiday/business therefore properties supporting BYOD will benefit out of this trend. Avaya keeps guest experience at the centre of its solutions like telephony, UC applications, data networking and video solutions for hospitality market. In some high end hotels, guests are provided with Tablets with the ability to control their services and room facilities thru it. Also for the efficient functioning of hospitality management systems, ICT plays a key role. HMS (Hotel Management System) is almost always a part of a hospitality project with 3 stars and up. These systems can be quite comprehensive in managing front desk and also the back-end operations. Integration of HMS with IP Telephony and Call Centers is common. Implementing versatile wired and wireless network is also critical. Offering Video calling facility to guests on Tablets is also catching on. But there are certain challenges as well for example, Interoperability between different technologies, faster deployment of new applications into existing infrastructure, easier to manage systems and increase revenue generation from technology investment. TCS claims that its integrated suite of IT, infrastructure and business process outsourcing services, which can help hospitality companies to lower their TCO of IT and infrastructure by up to 35%, Improve process efficiencies and service levels by up to 25%, Provide IT delivery quality improvements up to 30%. TCS’ Hospitality practice builds and delivers solutions for TCS’ clients in the hotels, resorts, restaurants and cruise line industries. The company works with leaders in the industry across the globe, providing integrated IT, BPO and infrastructure services to enable flexible business model options for our clients. As active members of hospitality industry forums such as HTNG, the company is committed to leveraging technology to solve the industry’s most pressing business challenges. It has partnership with clients on key business transformation initiatives, including RFID guest recognition, personalized touch-points and contact-less check-in.

As a vendor company, Avaya assuages the challenges with the help of its open standard platform. Avaya’s IP Office provides multiple applications from a single server platform thus reducing data centre space requirement, power consumption, easier to manage & administer. With built-in CTI engine, integration with business application is easier. Cutting edge data networking solution helps in faster deployment of new services as required by guests. As per Khalid, Avaya’s solutions are developed keeping in mind the concerns of this segment. Their IP Office offer is suitable for properties from 50-1000 rooms and Avaya Aura platform is available for properties beyond this size. With single server platform providing applications like audio conference bridge for up to 256 parties, video conferencing, mobility, Instant messaging, presence, call recording, computer telephony integration (business application integration), it providing all advance features required by hospitality customers on minimal server footprint. To support the ever increasing demand for faster browsing on multiple devices, Avaya provides Identity Engine which can identify a user as long as they require access on the network and bases the profile, access is granted. We can restrict access to applications, websites on the bases of identity of the user without the need for administrator to configure it each time. Avaya 8100 Wi Fi solution provides reliable & fast network access to the users. Avaya India has a network of service integrators and channel partners who deliver our solutions. We also have many hospitality specific partners who understand the needs of customers and can offer end to end solutions. However today, the hotel industry is evolving and trying to find out innovative ways to expedite its communications and services. Therefore, Video conferencing, high speed wireless connectivity, efficient call center and comprehensive HMS are amongst the key services that are being evaluated and implemented by the hospitality industry to gain more satisfied guests.

FINALLY… So far, the usage of the technology in the hospitality sector has changed the way it was operating earlier but in future times, the industry will see more and more integration of ICT. So far as the network support is concerned it is restricted to some devices but going forward the hotels have to provide support to any device or any number of devices the guest would be bringing in. Plus the hotel industry has to optimize its customer care department to react to the communications coming from various sources.  ë

CLOUD COMPUTING

Future of Content lies in Cloud

Cloud represents an opportunity for businesses to share and collaborate on documents, access critical information across any platform or device, without having to make huge initial investments on technology or infrastructure.

I

nformation has never been so dynamic and fluid in nature, as it is today. The emergence of multi-dimensional knowledge platforms and all encompassing communication channels have rapidly expanded the gamut of information sources for organizations, globally. These are acting as drivers of change, feeding businesses with real-time data and content that needs to be processed with agility and speed to gain the ‘First Mover Advantage’. Organizations are faced with the challenge of managing large volumes of content and leverage the knowledge pool they create, for meeting their business goals. Another significant development has been the advent of mobile workforce that has allowed businesses to expand their target markets and service domains. This increasingly distributed asset needs to be supplemented with anytimeanywhere access to business content. Field agents carry business insights with substantial ground level market intelligence that needs to be captured and entered back into the system. In wake of these recent changes, organizations are left with no choice but to radically restructure their business practices and work infrastructure to cater to this dynamic, information rich environment. This can create significant cost burden and induce strong resistance internally which need to be tackled strategically. Cloud represents an opportunity for businesses to share and collaborate on documents, access critical information across any platform or device, without having to make huge initial investments on technology or infrastructure. All expenses for

28

storage management, maintenance and support including hardware and software investments are taken care of by the service provider. Moving the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system into cloud frees it from all spatial and IT infrastructural limitations, providing real-time information access for smarter decision making. It makes the system competent for handling all kinds of disaster recovery situations by storing documents electronically on third party platforms, thus eliminating any risk of loss of documents due to unforeseen disasters like fire or flood. Cloud based content management has many unique industry applications, making it an ideal platform for any organization/department that deals with huge volumes of documents and content. Law Firms/Legal Departments – Cloud infrastructure can help create a scalable and secure document repository, which can be accessed remotely via internet. It thus improves consistency and organization of the vital records. Collaborative content creation and sharing through cloud has the potential to create strategic business intelligence and drive home a sustainable competitive advantage for organizations. However, migrating an enterprise content management (ECM) system to a cloud infrastructure can be a major undertaking and could prove disastrous without careful planning and strict adherence to the plan. Enterprise wide involvement and behavioral reinforcement through trainings and workshops can mitigate

GUEST TALK

DATA CENTRES

How Do You Turn power guzzling Data Centres into profit centres? Shekhar Dasgupta* proposes baseline studies and sound capacity planning for Indian Data Centres to reduce power costs. n W O R D S : S H E K H A R D A S G U P TA , F O U N D E R A N D D I R E C T O R , GREENFIELD SOFTWARE n PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK

When we set out to create next generation data centre technologies for cloud infrastructures in 2010-11, we were fired by our mission to help customers control capital costs, reduce operating expenses and mitigate the risks of Data Centre failures. The team was eager and had the right experience. We knew that Data Centres around the world were major power guzzlers, consuming over 2% of utility-produced electrical power in the United States and European Union and growing at over 15% per annum. Unfortunately, no such data exists for India. Discussions with customers, aimed at validating GreenField Software’s specifications and hypotheses, pointed out that high power consumption could be controlled through better Capacity Planning and reducing overprovisioning without impacting availability goals. It is now well established that poor design and absence or lack of good Capacity Planning are the main causes of wasted capital expenditure, higher power and cooling costs as well as increased space use. Even though most servers and other equipment come with vendor-provided powersaving techniques, Data Centres run up huge power bills as a result of either poor design or lack of

Capacity Planning. Sharp spikes in energy costs towards latter half of last decade led US and European Data Centres to conduct baseline studies. This led to the emergence of data center energy efficiency tools, which has now matured into a new category, called Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software. DCIM now helps in baseline studies in current operations by identifying power distribution losses, excess cooling and legacy servers that are no longer adding business value. DCIM also helps to forecast accurate power, cooling and space requirements through tracking current power usage at device and rack level. EMERGENCE OF INDIAN DATA CENTRES Rapid economic growth and a significant topological change in Indian data centres, over the last decade, has had a direct bearing on power consumption. Growth in e-commerce, e-governance and outsourcing to India led to increase in demand for Data Centre capacity of existing facilities. Given the criticality of Data Centre, most organizations have a Disaster Recovery Centre. Tier III and Tier IV Data Centres are

built with extreme redundancies to meet 98+% uptime requirements. Effectively for every unit of computing work done, there is a 4x multiplier effect in asset base and >2x in power consumption. Non-computing assets (viz. DC assets excluding servers, storage and networks) account for nearly 50% of total power consumption in most Data Centres, with primary load coming from cooling requirements. ENERGY SAVING POTENTIAL An accepted formula for measuring energy efficiency in a Data Centre is Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). The ideal state is for PUE is 1.0 where total power consumption in the DC equals the total power consumption by IT equipment. The most efficient DCs in the world have PUE between 1.15 – 1.20. A large majority of DCs have a PUE of over 2.0. This would be true for Indian Data Centres as well. As per Bureau of Energy Efficiency-Confederation of Indian Industry manual on DC Energy Efficiency ‘for a conventional DC with operating PUE of 2.0, the minimum energy saving potential by adoption of latest technologies is between 25 to 30%’. Of the savings, while nearly 60% can come from

server-related efficiencies like virtualization, there’s another 7% that may be derived from more efficient cooling technologies. In most Data Centres - particularly in Captives, Government and State-owned Data Centres - energy usage is crudely monitored, if at all. Rising power consumption compounded with escalating energy prices, makes it important to measure and manage power use through Building Management Systems and DCIM software. There is a need for a nation-wide survey of DCs occupying 3000 square feet space. This could be further divided to cover Captives, Government, State-owned and Collocation DCs. The study will provide energy policy-makers critical data to formulate audit guidelines and certify Indian Data Centres on energy efficiency using PUE and other measures like watt/square foot and watt per rack. The study could well throw up ways to reduce power consumption in DCs through policy interventions. In addition, it could help use power so saved for other critical sectors like agriculture and industry. Following up base line studies with capacity planning could well make today’s energy guzzling data centres into profit centres.  ë
