y uncle Mike came to visit last week. We went to dinner and afterward (at his insistence), we ended up at a little place to sing karaoke. Uncle Mike is a big man in his 60s, who looks a bit like Santa Claus—with a round belly, blue eyes and a white beard, so his low, deep voice suits him. And honestly, hearing him sing, you might be able to compare his voice to that of Johnny Cash. He's even won a singing contest or two. There weren't many people signing up to sing, so Uncle Mike got to sing a lot, and it was if he were in heaven. After every song, he got a loud applause and hoots and hollars from the 15 or so people who were there. After Uncle Mike, a man sang who was not quite as well received by the small crowd. He was also in his 60s, but small in stature, wearing all black, with long thick hair and a significant underbite. He awkwardly sang a Beetles tune (which was barely recognizable), with such passion and sincerity that it was hard to look away. "What a weirdo," Uncle Mike said, after the song ended. I was taken aback. I couldn't believe he was judging a fellow karaoke guy—a guy with a shared passion and a fearlessness to sing in front of people, most likely with the knowledge he wasn't particularly good at performing. "Uncle Mike," I said, "That's not cool. He's just a guy with a passion for singing, just like you. Perhaps you should be silently grateful for your talent and consider respecting his courage." There was a long silence. A few minutes later, Uncle Mike turned to me and said, "Thank you. I needed to hear that perspective." – FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Ten Reasons Why Veterans Make Great Employees by Julie Rains

Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of working with military veterans and active duty personnel who anticipate, are in the process, or have already transitioned to the civilian world. Some job descriptions line up with their military credentials: a helicopter pilot making evacuations in Baghdad might find similar work with a law enforcement agency stateside; ditto for a technician who is searching for a

mechanic’s position. But others may have incredibly valuable skills that aren’t recognized in the private sector. And, like many job seekers, the language of their current or most recent employers may be misinterpreted by those who screen candidates and make hiring decisions. Based on my experiences with military personnel, here are attributes that veterans often have and that make them great employees.

1. U nderstanding that actions and behaviors reflect on the organization

opportunities for improving processes and results. In some cases, being in the field requires adapting to uncertain or changing circumstances, not being able to receive assistance from back-up teams, which further develops innovative thinking.

Military personnel, like other public servants, are always under scrutiny whether on a mission, back at the base, or on leave. They seem to understand that everything they do and say reflects on the integrity and reputation of the organization.

4. A bility to create something where nothing existed before

representatives; others have spoken before senior executives (such as a Four-Star General). Delivering accurate information and being clear in meaning are both critical.

6. Quick Thinking

Missions and field exercises require leaders to quickly analyze situations, continuously process new and changing information, and make sound decisions. They have often received training on certain techniques, such as maneuvering a helicopter in a dust storm with no visibility, but real-world scenarios with life-or-death consequences can help hone focused thinking aligned with quick action under pressure.

7. Desire to re-use and recycle

More than one of my clients has mentioned that he or she was able to conserve resources by sharing inventory (equipment, supplies) with other facilities. In one case, he redistributed parts to sites worldwide; in another, she claimed serviceable but unneeded equipment from a nearby site.

BUILD A BETTER PHILADELPHIA

CREATE A CAREER THAT MATTERS

America’s natural gas industry is growing fast. With new technologies and new products it’s leading the charge to a cleaner, greener future.

Our veterans have shown that they have put themselves in danger to protect our freedom. Being able to sacrifice personal reward for greater, collective good is often a valuable asset.

We’re PGW – the country’s biggest municipal natural gas company – and we’re building a better energy economy for all. Our award-winning teams are engaged, determined, and rewarded.

8. Preparedness and flexibility

Readiness for deployments or impromptu operations plays a central role in many military job descriptions. Making sure that equipment is operating correctly and that supplies are ready allows responsiveness to organizational needs. And, understanding that uncertainty is the norm yields flexible employees.

9. Insight into how their actions impact other people

Doing a good job doesn’t mean just getting a good performance review, it means that fellow soldiers are as safe as possible and that critical missions are successful: the cargo plane with military troops is loaded properly; the helicopter that is transporting the critically wounded will respond to pilot controls, etc.

10. Demonstrated commitment to the greater good

Our veterans have shown that they have put themselves in danger to protect our freedom. Being able to sacrifice personal reward for greater, collective good is often a valuable asset. There are even more skills, such as project management, purchasing, and team leadership skills, that our veterans possess. I have listed 10 that made the deepest impression on me. Note: I have provided résumé services for veterans and learned about their roles through discussions of their job duties. I am not a veteran. ll too often, job seekers make one critical but easily avoidable mistake. More specifically, those job candidates focus on what they need, from the salary level they hope to achieve to the number of vacation days they hope to earn. With all this focus on the needs of the job seeker, the needs of the company doing the hiring are often lost in the shuffle. No matter what the industry or what past experience, it is important to remember that hiring is always a two-way street. From the most basic entry-level position to the leadership role in the corner office, the most successful candidates are the ones who put the needs of their potential employers first. Becoming a problem solver is one of the most effective job hunting strategies there is. Finding problems your new employer did not even know they had and offering new and innovative ways to solve them is a sure way to set you apart from the competition and show the hiring manager that you bring something special to the table. Most companies are understandably reluctant to publicize their shortcomings or broadcast their problems. Even so, a bit of sleuthing can provide important clues you can use to identify those weaknesses and find unique ways to resolve them. From reading articles in the general press and scanning investment sites and connecting with former employees through social

media, there are plenty of ways to uncover the hidden problems that your future employer may not be aware of. Once you uncover those hidden weaknesses, you can start working on ideas to fix them. You will, however, need to be a big oblique when discussing those shortcomings. Starting a conversation by talking about all the things that are wrong with the company will not win you any friends, so you will need to engage in a bit of positive spinning. If your research unveiled dozens of complaints about underpayment and a lack of promotional opportunities, you could describe your past experience and how you helped an old employer create a new compensation structure. If the company has been losing ground it competitors on social media, you could point out your online experience and how it could help your new employer project a more positive brand image. Solving problems is a big part of any job, from the most basic to the most complex. Every new hire provides employers with a new way to solve their current problems and identify new ones they may not have yet identified. Learning to become a problem solver for your new employer is one of the best ways to boost your chances and become a superstar performer. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

within information security?

Yes. At first you need to learn the basic principles, but you’ll eventually identify a specialty area. Two big areas with opportunities are computer forensics, figuring out how someone hacked in and retracing those steps, and application security, identifying and fixing software vulnerabilities. There’s also governance, risk, and compliance. This is my area of expertise. I help set policies and oversee the security programs. I’m in a strategic role, not a tactical one.

How can prospective cybersecurity specialists prepare for this work?

It can be extremely difficult at the entry level, because many job openings require 1 to 3 years of experience. What I usually tell people is to get as much knowledge as you can, and then network. Step 1 is to get your knowledge. There are all kinds of information security training classes online. One site that offers free training is

For example, I might search how to hack something to learn how it happens. And once I learn how to hack it, I can learn how to prevent it. Step 2 is networking. Go to meet-ups, or join user groups or professional associations to meet others in the cybersecurity field. Latch on to those who are able to help and answer questions. Start talking to people, and get your name out there; let them know that you’re looking to get started. It’s amazing how many people are willing to help if only you ask.

Are IT certifications usually required to work in this field?

Yes. The CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), the oldest certification for IT security, is the gold standard. It’s good for identifying whether people have a baseline. An industry association survey asked IT workers to list the certifications they had, and there were 71 different certifications listed. But CISSP was the most common.

Do you need a college degree to work in cybersecurity?

Yes and no. Do you need a degree? No, and I know a bunch of people working in the field today who don’t have a degree. But should you get one? Yes, because it gives you the discipline to develop skills for lifelong learning. Ideally, a major in computer science provides the foundation. There are a lot of programs around information security or information assurance; there are even master’s and doctorate degrees in this area. But if you’re driven and passionate about cybersecurity, you can come from any background. I earned a college degree over time, through online training. It was a long and tedious experience, and I was able to take advantage of life-learning credits.

You need to be tenacious: don’t give up, and stay focused. Have a passion for learning and technology. Having the aptitude is important, too; we’re driven for problem solving, for figuring things out, for being challenged. You also need to understand business—the concepts of program management and teams—and not just technology. And as you progress in your career, you’ll need to build on your communication skills and your presentation skills.

What do you like best about your work?

Elbit Systems of America provides advanced technology solutions to help keep America safe.

Probably the challenges. And I enjoy working with my clients and peers and sharing that knowledge. I also like the ever-changing technology. There’s always something new. I’m learning, learning, learning.

What do you find most difficult?

We do important work that matters for the defense, homeland security, sustainment & support, commercial aviation, and medical instrumentation markets.

Getting people to truly understand our role. A company will often do “just good enough” security. Just like with accidents, with cybersecurity breaches, companies think, “It’s not going to happen to us.” And that presents a huge obstacle in convincing them that they actually may be at risk.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the typical personal financial adviser earns $108,090 per year. Personal financial advisers usually need at least a bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, or a similar field of study, and they must pass relevant licensure and certification examinations in their state. These professionals work with individuals and families and provide them with advice regarding investments, retirement planning, taxes, and insurance. They also research investments and monitor the stock market so they can make informed recommendations to clients. Financial advisers are responsible for assisting their clients with investing their money, and they provide regular updates regarding the performance of investments.

Actuaries

Salaries are above the six-figure mark for actuaries, who earn an average of $110,090 annually, per the BLS. You can enter this field with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or statistics; some colleges even offer a program specifically in actuarial science. Actuaries are also required to pass a series of professional examinations. Most work in the insurance industry, performing statistical calculations to determine the risks of and costs associated with events such as illnesses, accidents, and death. Actuaries use their calculations to design and monitor insurance programs, and they may also be responsible for determining the costs of insurance policies.

College Professors

Professors who teach finance courses within the business department at a college or university can expect to earn $88,740 per year, as reported by the BLS. Most collegiate level instructors have a doctoral

degree in their field of study. In addition to preparing for and giving lectures, finance professors assign and grade papers and projects, score exams, and meet with students outside of class for consultation. They may also perform research for the college or university that employs them.

Financial Managers

Per BLS reports, financial managers are some of the highest-paid professionals in the finance industry, with average annual earnings of $130,230. Financial managers need a bachelor's degree in a field such as business or finance, as well as several years of career experience. Job prospects are better for those with a master's degree in business administration (MBA). Once employed, financial managers provide supervision to other employees in the finance department, compile and review an organization's financial reports, design and monitor the organization's budget, and ensure that the organization complies with laws and meets its financial goals. Financial managers may also develop plans for increasing profits and revenue.

Economists

Economists can expect to earn slightly over six figures, with an average yearly salary of $105,290, per the BLS. Job prospects are best for those with a master's or doctoral degree in economics. Economists are usually employed by government agencies, research institutions, and major corporations. They perform research, collect data, and carry out surveys regarding economic topics such as unemployment, wages, productivity, and consumer demand. Economists use survey and research results to produce reports and to provide guidance to governments and corporations. They may also publish articles in newspapers and academic journals. Economists are just one of several types of finance professionals who enjoy aboveaverage earnings. Those who choose to enter the finance field will be presented with ample high-paying job opportunities, in fields such as actuarial science and financial management. With the proper education and valuable work experience, finance professionals are sure to advance their careers and earn a lucrative salary. Article provided Constant-Content.com

Did you use any roads, electronics, or appliances today? Thank an engineer.

ngineers have a role in creating a variety of structures and products, from airports to zippers. If that sounds intriguing, consider a career in engineering. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment growth for these workers, with nearly 140,000 new jobs expected for engineers over the 2016–26 decade. And in 2016, engineers had a median annual wage of $91,010—more than twice the median wage for all workers. Read on to see which engineering occupations are projected to have the most new jobs from 2016 to 2026 and which had the highest wages in 2016. You’ll also learn about the industries that employ engineers and the typical requirements for entering engineering.

My ambition is to be myself and be heard.

Projected new jobs

BLS prepares employment projections for 18 engineering occupations. Table 1 shows how many of the 139,300 jobs for engineers are expected to be added in each of these occupations from 2016 to 2026. About 23 percent of new jobs for engineers are projected to be for civil engineers, the largest engineering occupation. Mechanical and industrial engineers are second and third in projected job growth among engineers. Together, these two occupations accounted for about 36 percent of new jobs for engineers.

Engineer wages

As table 1 also shows, median annual wages for engineers vary. A median wage is the 50th percentile: half of workers in the occupation made less than that amount, and half made more.

Percentiles show wage ranges within an occupation. For example, entry-level engineers, like entry-level workers in most occupations, usually earn less than the median; engineers with experience are likely to earn more. As the illustration shows, engineers at even the 10th percentile make $55,670—meaning that more than 90 percent of engineers have wages that are higher than the $37,040 median for all workers Chart 1 shows percentile wages for the top-paying engineering occupations in 2016. Petroleum engineers earned a median wage of $128,230 per year, the highest of all engineers. At the 90th percentile, these workers had an annual wage that was equal to or greater than $208,000, the top percentile wage for 2016 published by the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics program.

Employment by industry

Manufacturing employed more than 578,000 engineers in 2016, the most of any industry. (See chart 2.) Within manufacturing, the largest number of jobs for engineers were related to the production of computer and electronic products, transportation equipment, and machinery.

Typical education required

For entry-level engineering jobs, you typically must have a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline that’s related to the type of work you plan to do. Additional education or licensure, or both, may be needed for advancing in the occupation. Getting practical experience while in college, such as by completing an internship or participating in a cooperative engineering program, also is recommended. But you can start to prepare for an engineering career as early as high school by taking classes such as trigonometry, calculus, and physics.

Engineering-related occupations

Other occupations might require—or benefit from—a background in engineering. Of the occupations in chart 3, all but one typically require a bachelor’s degree or more education at the entry level. Chart 3 shows that the median annual wages for these engineering-related occupations, like wages for engineers, were higher than the median for all workers in 2016. 5 Lessons Fr

avid is in charge of workplace diversity management at a global manufacturing company. He was recently assigned a seemingly basic task. “Focus on minorities,” the executive sponsor of the initiative told him. “I’d like to see our numbers climb from 25 to 45 percent,” he said. Minorities are largely underrepresented at the company, but David knew that was only a small part of a larger problem. Women are also grossly underrepresented, especially among senior employees. Additionally, there are no current initiatives to hire people with disabilities, nor is there a policy in place that promotes diverse ways of thinking. Frustrated at the narrowed focus of his duty, David immediately felt discouraged. Through his experiences, he has learned that to achieve greater diversity and inclusion (D&I), organizational efforts will need to focus beyond just the numbers. To effect positive and measurable change within an organization, David knows it is imperative to focus efforts on a collective and multidimensional solution. Later that day, David chatted with a team of his coworkers in different countries during a conference call. Some of them echoed something he has heard plenty of times in the past. Jason, a colleague in Singapore, stated, “Simply focusing on hiring minorities isn’t enough. The offices here, for example, employ a huge number of minorities, but they aren’t included as key decision makers, and they’re rarely promoted to executive positions.” David and Jason both agree that their company should continue to hire more people from underrepresented groups, but that a single focus will not do much to solve any of the larger problems. They understand that companies with gender, ethnic and racial diversity are at least 15 percent more likely to experience above-average financial returns. They also know that companies within the top quartile for racial and ethnic diversity are 35 percent more likely to do the same. These statistics imply a significant relationship between competitive profit gains and diversity, so why, exactly, is focusing on minorities not enough for a global company? Why are members of the global workforce — such as David and Jason — frustrated with one-way initiatives that do nothing more than single out certain groups of people? And most importantly: what can we learn from top companies successfully globalizing workplace diversity and inclusion? Managing diversity and inclusion in the global workplace is, in many ways, an unmapped territory. As such, we share five lessons from the following top global companies:

There is much rs in diversity and inclusion, but it is ber that every company’s D&I initiarent. You should tailor your initiatives ecific industry and your company’s Furthermore, global strategies should d locally.

Through his experiences, David has learned that to achieve greater diversity and inclusion (D&I), organizational efforts will need to focus beyond just the numbers. It is wise to remember that diversity means different things to different people, and organizations will apply those definitions to their companies respectively. For example, the percentage of workers of European ancestry in the UK decreased by almost 10 percentage points over the last ten years. This presents an area of focus unique to the UK workforce. Another example is the focus on people with disabilities in India, where many people suffer from polio or other diseases because medicine was not available to treat them. Because of this, Deutsche Bank works with a non-governmental organization to train people with disabilities to work at the company. It’s clear that the shift in D&I still includes, but stretches beyond, race and gender. We are in need of a collective push toward recognizing the need for diverse thinkers coming from a variety of different backgrounds, but companies are only slowly moving in this direction. Take the story of Todd Sears as an example. He began his career as a Wall Street investment banker in an environment that was not accepting of homosexuality. He eventually found a position in a more welcoming environment, where he flourished and eventually went on to pursue his own firm in a new market: private banking focusing on LGBT clients. Sears’ statement is a testament to the changing forecast of D&I: “For me, it’s business first, and business as a vehicle to achieve social justice and civil rights.” His statement provokes further thoughts about for-profit organizations and their dedication to advancing society on a global level. We all know intuitively that D&I initiatives are morally right, but realistically speaking, businesses are going to do what is best for the bottom line. This fact rouses sentiments about social responsibility, and part of this view naturally considers supplier diversity. Few companies are as successful as Ford when it comes to supplier diversity. In November of 2014, The National Minority Supplier Development Council named Carla Preston of Ford Motor Company a Minority Supplier Development Leader. In 2013, Preston’s efforts led to Ford adding 16 new Tier 1 diverse suppliers to its network, accounting for $4.8 million in spend. That year, Ford granted $1.08 billion of new business to diverse suppliers. This example proves that a global entity can indeed leverage diversity in many ways and see extremely positive results. This is proof that what is morally right can also be the best business decision. There are aspects of running a global business that are the same across the board, such as making a profit and putting forth efforts into D&I. There are also unique concerns that come with operating through different cultures and regions.

2. Create inclusion It is not enough to only hire a diverse workforce. It is crucial to leverage diverse perspectives for the benefit of the business as a whole. It is important to bring awareness to unconscious bias and discuss it in terms of the organization. In doing so, multiple perspectives are shared and considered. 3. Drive accountability Leaders in diversity and inclusion should make it clear that your global environment promotes free speaking. Encourage employees to speak out against biases. If necessary, launch a culture change in which every employee is involved. This process can be slow and intimidating, but your efforts will pay off when employees feel empowered to take individual accountability and let you know when they notice a bias. Diversity and inclusion activities in the workplace are not always a simple process. In fact, sometimes they can be quite messy. But it is often in these situations—in which employees step outside of their comfort zones and are faced with new situations and ideas— that tremendous growth occurs. A global organization catching on to this need for inclusive leadership is Ford Motor Company, which recognizes the need for leveraging different skills and perspectives, and for “respecting each other, and, in doing so, achieving profitable growth for all.” Kiersten Robinson, Vice President of Human

• Interpretations. Employees interpret situations, problems and other people in different ways, classifying them accordingly. Through diverse interpretations, teams can discover multiple resolutions. • Heuristics. People resolve issues in different ways, proving there are multiple ways to arrive at a conclusion. • Predictive models. To make predictions, some people analyze, and others look for a story. Both are useful to discovering workplace solutions. Cognitive diversity breeds high performance while completing complex tasks. Global workforces powered with diverse thinkers hold the ability to foster innovation. It is important to note that there are two possible roadblocks to this innovation: • Unconscious bias • A corporate culture that doesn’t promote sharing any and all opinions Unconscious bias is difficult to overcome, but there are steps you can take to overcome it in the global workplace: • Realize your tendencies and natural reactions to people different from you in some way. • Expand your support network and go to different people for advice. • Invite more people to make important decisions. World leader in quality-of-life services Sodexo is well known for its forward thinking and ability to recognize all work together to identify bias. The company was recognized with one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers awards for two years in a row. President of Sodexo Canada Barry Telford explained, “Diversity is not just about each group getting their moment. We must and make a commitment at all levels of the organization not to overlook our most talented and resilient team members.” Leaders in diversity and inclusion should reward employees who are not afraid to voice an unpopular opinion or suggest something different than what’s expected. Dr. Rohini Anand of Sodexo USA said, “Inclusive leadership starts with self-awareness, being introspective, knowing your blind spots and possessing the ability to listen and learn.” The ability to listen and learn can only be valuable if employees are encouraged to speak their minds, even when they are expressing an unpopular opinion or suggesting a new idea. Smart, successful global teams understand that differing opinions spark innovation — and that it is a crucial part of high performance. Without recognizing bias and considering different viewpoints, growth will likely be slow moving. David and Jason’s global manufacturing company would likely benefit from an amended corporate culture that promotes diverse thinkers and promotes recognizing unconscious bias. They would likely experience fewer workplace frustrations as employees are encouraged to voice their opinions and multiple solutions are considered. With so many considerations, it can be difficult to know where to start or where to focus your efforts. Learning to leverage global workplace diversity is far from simple, and learning to manage, maintain and measure your efforts will take time. Leaders in diversity and inclusion have taught us that it is an ongoing process, and it might require the help of an outside source — one that specializes in global diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Visit www.AperianGlobal.com for more information on putting diversity and inclusion into practice in your workplace.

The experiential designer works with the architect to come up with design elements in the space. Once we establish the design elements, we determine how the elements will look and function. Interview with Jill Ayers —

What is experiential design?

Experiential design is communicating through graphic design for the built environment, whether it’s the interior of a building or outside. It’s for the people in a space, to help them find their way; or it could be to delight the senses. It all points back to communicating information.

What do experiential designers do?

What we provide ranges from important educational or informational graphics to something that celebrates or enhances a brand. A project begins with architects and interior designers laying out the framework of the space. Then, experiential designers, who understand the flow of the foot traffic, determine opportunities where they can tell a story in that space. For example, people sometimes need help finding their way through a space and getting oriented—called “wayfinding.” The architect might suggest a location inside a building where he or she thinks the major foot traffic will be and might help determine where the design element will be. Then, experiential designers will be responsible for what the design element, such as a directional sign, will look like: the scale of it and, if it incorporates text, the colors and the typeface. All of that is informed by our research as it relates to the client.

Describe the design process, from idea to installation.

elements, we determine how the elements will look and function. Then, it’s on to the development phase. In development, experiential designers outline the plan and how the project will be built. Next, we estimate how much the project is going to cost, and the client decides whether to proceed based on pricing. From there, we see that the project gets built correctly by reviewing samples and shop drawings. And then we oversee the installation. Throughout this process, we’re collaborating with the client or architect—or with the landscape architect if the project is for a park. Experiential design is a highly collaborative field.

How do you get projects?

Getting involved in a project can happen in many ways. For example, we could be approached by a client with a problem, such as a need to orient staff or visitors through a space. Sometimes, we’re approached by an architect to work as a consultant. The designer may come on board as a specialist and deal with a specific need: to help users find their way, for example.

What sorts of projects do you work on?

My company generally focuses on interior spaces, which could include retail stores, corporate offices, or residential buildings. But experiential design can also be in places like a park or an airport.

Talk about some of the qualities The experiential designer works with the experiential designers need.

Creativity and a sense of discovery are architect to come up with design elements in the space. Once we establish the design essential. We may come up with solutions

that are practical, but having an imagination, really pushing and playing with an idea, is important because there’s no limit to what we can envision. Also, you need communication skills because designers have to be able to articulate to someone on the team what we are doing and why we are doing it.

What’s your educational background?

I have a bachelor of fine arts degree, with a double major in industrial design and graphic design. I completed both tracks so that I’d have a working knowledge of industrial design with a focus on product design and I’d have a formal graphics education, too. In my case, when I graduated twenty some years ago, I was not aware of a program that specially trained you for experiential design. So I went to school for graphic and industrial design.

How did graphic design and industrial design lead to this career?

Toward the end of my college years, I was trying to figure out how to blend my interest in product design and ergonomics with communications and typography. For independent study, my professor suggested I do a signage and wayfinding study for the art school, where I was taking classes. He introduced me to environmental graphic design through a project. He said, “With your interest in architecture and materials and your love for typography and graphic design, this might be an interesting way for you to combine the two.” Out of college, I ended up getting a job in a company that is known for signage and wayfinding for cities, hospitals, and cultural institutions. And that’s how I got my start. It really piqued my interest in graphic design, architecture, and materials.

Do you have any advice for prospective experiential design students?

Because there aren’t a lot of experiential design programs, look into a school that has a graphic design program that allows you to take an independent study course. Or maybe there’s a particular class that focuses on experiential design. Even if there aren’t formal degree programs in experiential design, there are schools where you can get a graphic design or communications degree. You can take courses in learning how to put together a project and in learning how to take a company’s identity and bring that into a branded environment.

What do you like least about your job?

There are times when you have to go after the work. We are always looking for partners, which we have to put energy into, and then balance that task against delivering the product to clients we are currently working with. It’s a challenge. You can’t just sit back and twiddle your thumbs, because then the work runs out.

What do you like best?

It’s a pretty great field. We get to work with a wide range of clients. Sometimes, the projects have a really quick turnaround; other times, they take a year or more to do. And we get to help people, whether it’s just making their day more pleasant, informing them, or making sense of a space. It’s also really exciting to be creative and have your work out there. Our work has to have the ability to survive. So you can have something up for 3 or 4 or 20 years. That’s neat, because it’s woven into the architectural content. There’s something satisfying about that. Article provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. ne of the great things about the field of nursing is that there are so many career options available to experienced nurses. When you think of a nursing career, you probably picture busy professionals running around a hospital ward or helping patients in a medical clinic, but there is much more to nursing than that. Nurses work for insurance companies reviewing claims. They work in nursing homes helping patients maintain their independence while enhancing their safety. Nurses work in healthcare administration, making decisions that help hospitals and medical facilities be more effective and more cost-efficient. Nurses even work in education, giving the next generation of medical professionals the tools they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. No matter where you end up in your nursing career, chances are you will start in one of three places. There are three main ways to enter the field of nursing, including: • Aides - including nursing aides, attendants and orderlies • Licensed nurses - including licensed practical nurse (LPN) and licensed vocational nurse (LVN) • Registered nurse (RN) The wide variety of options available, and the equally wide variety of educational requirements and monetary commitments, makes nursing a particularly good field for the adult learner. While many people enter nursing school right out of high school, others take a more nuanced path. Some people start out as nursing aides at a local hospital or nursing home, working their way up and attending school in the evening. Others work jobs in other fields and attend nursing school in the evenings and on weekends. Still others save up money until they can go to nursing school full time. No matter which path you choose, a career in nursing can be very rewarding. While there is no one right path to a nursing career, many adults like to try the field out before they commit the time and money required to get that coveted RN credential. They might work as an orderly at the local hospital or a nursing aide at a medical clinic. Once they have decided that a career in health care is a good fit, they may go back to college and pursue an LPN or RN degree. They may work toward those goals on a part-time basis, even attending some classes online. In fact, the nursing field is amenable to distance learning, and many nursing aides and other medical professionals take advantage of this option. When hands-on labs are required, students can use the facilities of local hospitals and clinics to get the experience they need. Others may prefer the interaction of a live classroom. For those adult learners, a local nursing school is an excellent choice. Many communities with large hospitals offer nursing programs, and most universities have some sort of nursing curriculum available. If you are unsure how to get started, just talk to the nurses at your doctor's office or the staff at the local hospital. You will get a lot of opinions, and some excellent advice on how to pursue your own nursing career. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

ave you been mulling over the possibility of pursuing a career in medicine? Luckily it’s never too late to pursue a new career. Before doing so, however, you need to consider several factors. Your finances, lifestyle, and family life are all important considerations. You also have to make sure that you’re suitable to a career in healthcare. Do you like science and helping people? Are you willing to spend a few months to a few years getting more education and training? Medicine is one of the most common fields that career changers pursue. This is primarily because such a wide variety of job roles exist in this industry. Among the most well known are obviously doctors and nurses. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though. You can also be a medical assistant, neurodiagnostic technologist, X-ray tech, EKG technician, surgical tech, dietitian, MRI tech, sonographer or embryologist, among others. Jobs in this field not only pay well (some fields can earn close to $100,000 annually), but employment is also set to grow in the coming years.

To help you decide whether or not a healthcare career is right for you, we’ve created the list below. Here are the top 6 signs that you should consider a career in the medical field:

#1 You Enjoy Caring for Others

If you are empathetic and truly enjoy helping others, then you might be a good fit for a medical career. The majority of healthcare positions involve some form of patient care. Therefore this is an extremely important trait to have. As a healthcare professional, you have to be empathetic toward your patients. You should be able to let them know that you genuinely care for them and truly understand how they feel. Believe it or not, empathy is an essential tool for all healthcare professionals. The desire to help is a powerful motivation to pursue a medical career. People working in the healthcare field interact with patients who come from all walks of life, and this is on a daily basis. You should then be capable of dealing with various personalities and attitudes. Patience is a virtue in this field. You should also be able to demonstrate good communication skills. You may need to explain certain procedures and/or medical conditions to patients and their families. You should also be a good listener. Listening and understanding a patient’s problems and concerns are a necessity.

#2 You Want to Work With People

Since healthcare is very people oriented, you must feel comfortable not only helping patients but also working with others. Teamwork is a central component of all health-

Working in the medical field can often be stressful. Emergency situations are frequent, even outside the ER. The sight of people suffering from their illnesses is common, and you may even witness deaths. Emotional stability and excellent stress management skills are therefore necessary if you’re considering shifting from your current job to a career in medicine. You shouldn’t be the first to freak out. Healthcare professionals have to learn to remain calm and composed in tough situations.

You have to be interested in human anatomy. Most healthcare jobs include dealing with the human body in one way or another, whether you’re dealing with blood as a phlebotomist, scanning patients as an MRI tech, or keeping a practice running smoothly as a medical assistant.

#4 You’re Curious About How the Human Body Works Has science always been one of your interests? If yes, healthcare education and training will be right up your alley. In particular, you have to be interested in human anatomy. If you enjoy reading, doing extensive research, memorizing tons of medical terms and peeping through microscopes, pursuing a medical career might be just for you. Just keep in mind, this is just when you’re beginning to take the medical career path. A career in the medical field requires continuous education though. The field of medicine is constantly changing. Just because you completed training or graduated from a medical school doesn’t mean you know everything. With new discoveries and technological advances, continuing education is the only way to stay current.

#6 You’re Motivated and You Work Hard

Imagine the repercussions if doctors and nurses were satisfied with mediocrity — it’s going to be a disaster. People’s lives are at stake! To be successful in the healthcare industry, you must be detailed-oriented, organized and committed to doing your best all the time. Internal motivation is key. Healthcare professionals pour out their energy, time and strength into their jobs. If you pursue a medical career, you will need to ready yourself for a demanding profession. Pursuing any new career requires a lot of hard work, so you should go in fully prepared. More importantly, though, make sure you are not pursuing a medical career for the wrong reasons. id-life jobseekers face even greater challenges than their younger counterparts when preparing for interviews. But with the right preparation, age doesn’t have to be a barrier of career success. Surviving and passing the job interview is an important part of any role/ career change. There is no doubt that older workers have to overcome a number of agerelated stereotypes to win the job. These may include: • Unable/unmotivated to keep up with changes in technology • More resistant to change • Less willing to continue skill development It’s important to address the questions asked during the interview. It is also important to ensure that your answers highlight how you keep pace with technology changes, embrace and champion change within the workplace, and how you are continuing to grow your skills. My 3 tips for mid-life career change interview success:

1: R ecognise what skills and experience you have to offer

Your depth of life and professional experience gives you a great advantage. It’s easy to take your hard-earned skills and qualities for granted. You need to focus and tell yourself why YOU are the best person for the job. Believe in your abilities to do the job. If you don’t believe in yourself and your ability to successfully do the job, then it is unlikely that the interviewers will. Having a positive attitude and practicing self belief is critical to your own success. Having an attitude that you are not worthy of the role, will reflect in your body language, responses and engagement during the interview. Stand in front of mirror regularly and say your skills out loud. Tell yourself why you are perfect for the role. Get used to hearing these facts out loud and really believe in them. If the first time you’re hearing how great you are is during the interview, you may not sound as confident. Come up with a few affirmations and say these out loud to yourself regularly. For example: I am highly qualified for this role. I am a confident, independent woman who deserves great things. I believe in myself and can achieve anything that I set out to do. Think about your achievements. List all your major achievements in the workplace (and outside if relevant). For each achievement, identify: • What was achieved.

• How you contributed to the achievement. • What you learned from the experience. • How this achievement has contributed to who you are today. Go in search of all public evidence of your success. Pull out your past references, news clippings, awards – anything that reminds you that you do have recognizable skills and experience to offer. Ask the people who know you. The older we get, the more likely we are to focus less on our traits that others value. Send out an email, put a call-out on social media, phone – whatever. You may be both surprised and reassured at the common strengths others appreciate in you.

These days most employers are interested in the full range of skills you can bring to their workplace. Brainstorm all the different ways you have demonstrated: • Communication skills. • Embracing change and being a change leader. • How you have kept pace with technology. • How you have mentored people within a team. • ‘Getting things done’ skills. • Leadership skills. • Interpersonal, ‘getting on with others’ skills. You have more skills than you might think. Sit down, brainstorm and match these ‘soft’ skills against the criteria. Spending time understanding your transferrable skills will increase your self confidence and your ability to be successful at the interview.

Spending time understanding your transferrable skills will increase your self confidence and your ability to be successful at the interview. 3. Go into your interview fully prepared

The more prepared you feel, the easier it will be to respond confidently. Here are a few suggestions to help you feel prepared: Find out as much as you can about the job, the organization and who will be conducting the interview. Read through their website, including any media releases or annual reports. Check out their social media presence on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Get a feel for the workplace culture and the role itself. Do you know anybody who has experience with the organization? Ask your own network, particularly any professional friends or associates. Use all the information you’ve gathered to brainstorm possible interview questions – and how you’d respond to them. You might like to use the following scaffold to help you plan and role-play interview questions with a friend: “I demonstrated _________ (skill), when I _________ (what you did: work or personal) and this resulted in _________ (the value of your achievement).” If you can afford it, invest in professional interview coaching. This service is a great way to refine your interview technique and to feel confident for an upcoming interview, and any interview-type situations in the future. Ultimately, the most important thing you can do to boost your confidence in a job interview is to believe in yourself. We all have valuable skills and life experience to offer. Prepare by doing some strategic background research, audit your skills and practice your interview responses. Take this approach and you’ll handle any job interview with confidence! Remember: you are fabulous, you are perfect for the role, you are highly skilled and experienced. Article written by Elise Stevens, founder of Age Defying Careers.
