am constantly amazed at the consistency and

efficiency of time. It just keeps marching on, regardless or circumstance or event. Sometimes we can perceive time as going more slowly or more quickly, but it is only our perception that makes the difference. Time doesn't waver. I've heard it said that "everyone has the same 24 hours in a day," and that our priorities are what indicate how we spend them. And that's true, for the most part, but Oprah's 24 hours and a homeless person's 24 hours are divided by different choices. Everyone has challenges in his/her life that are personal. Your job is to determine your true priorities and manage your time around those priorities so that your challenges do not create barriers for what you want to accomplish. As the new year is upon us, take some time to think about how you choose to spend your time everyday. Are your priorities lined up with your actions? If not, maybe you need to re-evaluate your priorities. Maybe what you claim is important to you is not as much a priority as you think. If your priorities do line up with your actions, keep up the great work and continue to challenge yourself!

New Year, New Career: Your Power Plan for Success

A

by Ford R. Myers, President, Career Potential, LLC

mericans make all kinds of New Year’s resolutions – to lose weight, to stop smoking, to spend more time with family and friends. However, one rarely hears anyone say, “I’m committed to improving my career situation this year.” To encourage this sort of work-related resolution, I have developed a simple six-part “Power Plan” designed to help people make the most of their job and career in 2022.

1. PERFORM AN INTERNAL AUDIT

A comprehensive internal audit combines an individual’s personal values, a list of adjectives outlining their “ideal employer,” and a “perfect job description” that you write for yourself. Then act on your preferences, and make the changes necessary to bring these criteria into your career!

2. UPDATE YOUR “JOB SEEKER’S TOOL KIT”

Every job seeker needs the core elements of an exceptional selfmarketing portfolio. These include written accomplishment stories, positioning statement and departure statement, professional biography, list of references, testimonial comments, letters of recommendation, and of course your resume!

Page 4

equal opportunity employment journal

January 2022

3. NETWORKING – THE CORE OF YOUR SEARCH

Develop a networking contact list and networking meeting agenda, and request help (access to a broader network and professional guidance – not a request for a job). Schedule one-on-one networking meetings with “centers of influence,” and attend group networking events. Become a committed collector of professional contacts!

4. BETTER INTERVIEWS GET BETTER OFFERS

As a job seeker, you need to tell the interviewer accurate, relevant accomplishment stories about your job performance and how you add value. The interviewer needs to share the story of their company, describe the position in question, and explain specifically how they want you to fit into their organization. When you can skillfully align your strengths and experiences with the interviewer’s needs and problems, you will dramatically improve your odds of getting an offer!

Consistently build your visibility and credibility through writing and speaking. Pursue additional education, training and certification when possible. Career management never stops! According to a recent CNN/Money article, “America’s unemployment rate has plummeted from 10% during the Great Recession to 4.1% today. Why Veterans Make Good Employees

mployers and companies can benefit from hiring Veterans. Military personnel are often cross-trained in multiple skills and have experience in varied tasks and responsibilities. Many Veterans have learned what it means to put in a hard day’s work. They have also come to appreciate the challenges and satisfaction of a job well done. Much of this experience can translate to their participation in the workforce making the Veteran an asset on the job. Strengths the Veteran can bring to the workplace include:

Working well in a team.

Teamwork is considered an essential part of daily life and is the foundation on which safe military operations are built.

Having a sense of duty.

Responsibility for job performance and accountability for completing missions are something to take pride in.

Experiencing self-confidence.

Holding a realistic estimation of self and ability based on experiences is expected of each Service Member.

Being organized and disciplined.

Possessing a strong work ethic. In the military, the mission always comes first. Having the ability to follow through on assignments, even under difficult or stressful circumstances. Possessing a variety of cross-functional skills, such as extensive training on computer programs and systems, interacting with various people with different skills to accomplish a task, and coordinating and troubleshooting problems in novel and known conditions. Being able to problem solve quickly and creatively. Being able to adapt to changing situations. Being able to follow rules and schedules. Hiring a Veteran can result in the hiring of a dedicated employee who has developed valuable teamwork, leadership, and job skills. ACT NOW:

The Art of Getting into Action and Getting Things Done by Long Yun Siang

A

ct now, if you want to achieve anything. Ever heard your people complain nothing ever gets done around here? Wonder why nothing ever gets done? That is because most people do not have a do it now attitude. People like to wait. Or they like to think that they are doing something even though all they do is talk about doing. 1. Talking is Not Doing And therein lies the biggest challenge. Most people like to talk and talking gives them a sense that they are acting out their plans. They can call this brainstorming, discussing or even planning, but these activities are not to be confused with doing. If you want something to happen, act now. Do what is planned and stop talking.

2. Plans Must Be Followed by Action

Am I saying that you do not plan? No, I will be foolish to say that. Of course you must plan ahead. The challenge is to get people to act upon their plans when they have planned it. Act now. Do not go back to the drawing board and start deliberating again and again. I am a big fan of the philosophy, “a good plan executed today is better than an excellent plan executed tomorrow.”

3. Nothing Moves until Someone Acts You must remember nothing moves until someone acts now. Plans put into action is the key to success regardless of what continued on page 24

10 Reasons to Consider a Career in Manufacturing

“W

by Casey Cephas

hat do you want to do when you grow up?” We were all asked that simple question when we were kids. Of course, finding a career that’s right for you is a bit more complicated. There are many boxes to check, including a role that matches your interests and skillsets, allows you to provide for yourself and your family, and offers the right combination of stability and opportunities. Whether you’re just starting your career or you’re looking to change your path, here are 10 reasons why now is a great time to get into manufacturing.

1. You’ll be joining a high-demand industry.

The manufacturing industry is experiencing a skills gap – meaning there will be more available jobs than there are qualified workers. A few reasons for that is a shift to “reshoring” or bringing manufacturing back to the US from overseas, as well as the Baby Boomer generation soon entering retirement. This means

there’s a high demand for hardworking employees. In fact, it’s estimated that there will be 3.5 million new skilled manufacturing jobs created in the next decade.

2. M anufacturing offers good pay and benefits.

According to DataUSA.com, the average manufacturing salary is over $63,000. Many full-time jobs also come with benefits such as health insurance and retirement fund contributions. While wages can vary based on location, employer, and experience, the bottom line is you can make a good living with a career in manufacturing.

3. You’ll avoid student debt.

The average student debt of a college graduate today is over $31,000. The rising cost of higher education has made a fouryear college degree unrealistic or not the sure investment that it used to be. If you’re graduating from high school or looking to switch to a new career, you can gain an entry-level position in manufacturing without accumulating student debt that will follow you for years. This also gives you the chance to start adding savings for retirement sooner. There are many different paths into a career in manufacturing including apprenticeships and on-the-job training.

January 2022

Page 15

4. Work with new technologies.

If you like learning about and using the latest gadgets, you could turn that passion into a career. Manufacturers are constantly adding new technologies to improve productivity, quality, and safety. Some examples include 3D printing, robotics, analytics, internet of things (IoT) connectivity, blockchain, and more.

5. Have job stability.

As the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated, not all industries are safe during uncertain economic times. However, many manufacturers were considered essential businesses and stayed open while other industries were shut down. Plus, since the job market is in high demand, employers are offering higher wages and better benefits to retain skilled workers.

6. Have access to opportunities for advancement.

Once you get your foot in the door with a manufacturing employer, there are many different ways you can advance your career. From working up to a manager role to transitioning to a different department such as sales or operations, you have opportunities to shape your future.

7. Take pride in making something real.

When so much of our lives are digital today, there’s something fulfilling about making something tangible that you can hold or use. Depending on your job, you can make products that are used in everyday life or you see out in the real world. You could also take pride in making products that help others such as medical devices, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and more.

Since manufacturing is used in so many different industries, you could find a career working in an area that matches one of your personal interests.

We believe we’re better together. Our values aren’t just pretty words; they’re commitments. They represent who we are. They start as a state of mind, and they come to life in how we show up to work each day. The values that shape our culture are the most important drivers of our success and represent who we are. If you embody these attributes, we want to work with you.

8. Stay active.

Not everyone is interested in sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. If that sounds like you, good news – many manufacturing jobs keep you moving, active, and collaborating with others.

9. Get involved in a personal interest.

Since manufacturing is used in so many different industries, you could find a career working in an area that matches one of your personal interests. For example, if you are a motorsports fan, you could work in automotive manufacturing. Or if you like technology, you could help build the next big electronic device.

Our company offers a competitive benefits package and many development opportunities for our teammates, including leadership training and technical training.

10. Use creativity and problem-solving skills.

Contrary to popular belief, manufacturing jobs are not all repetitive, assembly-line style tasks. Actually, many modern manufacturers are looking for workers who offer fresh, creative thinking and can solve problems – for example, figuring out a better way to set up a machine for a job.

5 Bulletproof Arguments on Why We Need Diversity in Tech

If

your office isn’t encouraging diversity and inclusion in the workforce, they’re missing out on all its potential benefits. The connection between workplace diversity and company success has been hotly debated over the past few years, with most minds speaking in favour of building a team with a variety of backgrounds. So how do tech companies build that sought-after workforce diversity? More importantly, how can you convince the skeptics that it’s important to do so? Events like Capital One’s Gift the Code Charity Hackathon, are a great example of the power behind technology to act as the ultimate connector. By bringing together diverse talent, over 150 passionate participants were able to work together to encourage diversity and innovation while creating solutions for charity. When it comes to promoting diversity to your bosses, and other decision-makers, here are a few solid arguments that will work in your favor.

That means missing some big wins that could otherwise be in your reach. Without diversity, how can you relate to your massive, diverse audience? You simply can’t.

Innovation

Innovation happens when you have the courage to shift away from the familiar. Diversity brings different thoughts, opinions and experiences to your workplace. When you bring together individuals with different experiences, views and skills, this cross-collaboration and vast knowledge base can lead to something unique and ground-breaking. No great innovation in history happened with a uniform group of people staying within the box.

11 Harmful Types of Unconscious Bias and How to Interrupt Them

W

hen most people think of bias, they think of a negative action taken deliberately. But there are unconscious or implicit biases that can affect your behavior or decisions without you realizing it. Unconscious biases are often based on mistaken, inaccurate, or incomplete information. These biases can have a significant impact on workplaces, shaping who gets recruited, hired, and promoted. Having an unconscious bias doesn’t make you a bad person—it just means you’re human. It’s possible, however, to interrupt bias. The first step is awareness. Below are the most common types of unconscious bias, along with tactics you can use to ensure workplace decisions aren’t being guided by them.

1. Affinity Bias

Also called like-likes-like, this bias refers to our tendency to gravitate toward people similar to ourselves. That might mean hiring or promoting someone who shares the same race, gender, age, or educational background. Opportunity: Ensure that candidate slates for all open po-

sitions include two or more qualified women as well as two people from other underrepresented racial/ethnic groups.

2. Ageism

Discriminating against someone on the basis of their age. Ageism tends to affect women more than men, and starts at younger ages.

Opportunity: Remove graduation and work experience dates from resumes. Realize that older workers may bring skills and experiences to the table that younger workers can’t.

3. Attribution Bias

Because some people see women as less competent than men, they may undervalue their accomplishments and overvalue their mistakes.

Opportunity: Give honest, detailed feedback to all of your direct reports, and tie it to concrete business goals and outcomes. Research shows that feedback given to women tends to be vague and focused on communication style, while men are given specific feedback that tends to be tied to business goals and technical skills that accelerate advancement.

Affinity Bias is also called like-likes-like, this bias refers to our tendency to gravitate toward people similar to ourselves. 4. Beauty Bias

Judging people, especially women, based on how attractive you think they are is called beauty bias. People perceived as attractive can be viewed more positively and treated more favorably. Opportunity: Try to be aware of those judging thoughts in your head during the hiring process and promotion opportunities. Focus on their work, not their look.

5. Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias refers to the tendency to look for or favor information that confirms beliefs we already hold.

7. The Contrast Effect

This bias refers to evaluating the performance of one person in contrast to another because you experienced the individuals either simultaneously or in close succession. Opportunity: If you find yourself comparing two people, especially in the hiring process, write down why you are leaning toward one over the other. Be sure your assessment is of each of them individually, not in comparison to one another.

8. Gender Bias

Preferring one gender over another or assuming that one gender is better for the job.

The tendency to put someone on a pedestal or think more highly of them after learning something impressive about them, or conversely, perceiving someone negatively after learning something unfavorable about them.

Opportunity: Consider why you have a negative (or positive) perception. Ask yourself if your perception stems from unconscious stereotyping based on race, gender, or ethnicity, for instance.

Why Federal? 5 Benefits of a Government Career

Page 23

E

very day, members of the federal workforce do important work that helps our nation move forward—from public health to agriculture to transportation—while providing solutions for the challenges our Nation faces. Some people, however, may not consider a federal career in their field, or even know that career opportunities exist for them in the government. Next time you look for a new job, remember these five great benefits of a federal career:

A Career with a Mission

As public servants, we hold a special trust from the Nation that we work hard to uphold. At DCAA, and as an agency in DoD, our contract audits help protect the American taxpayers’ dollars and support our military service members. Your work has significant impact and serves the greater good.

Stability and Security

A federal career affords you peace of mind regarding your job security. As one of the largest employers in the Nation, government careers remain stable, with salaries that are established according to the General Schedule (GS) pay scale. And if you change locations or even federal agencies, your retirement, leave, and other benefits move with you.

Career Growth Opportunities

Through the GS pay scale, opportunities for advancement in GS level and salary occur at recurring intervals. At DCAA, entry-level employees who meet required performance standards can be reviewed for potential advancement every 52 weeks. Good job performance is key for this fast track to career advancement!

Generous Benefits Packages

Federal employment means that you have choices among exceptional benefits programs to assist you in many aspects and stages of your life. Learn about your options for health insurance, retirement plans, transportation subsidies, financial support for education, and more on our website.

Work-Life Balance

Working for the government affords you the opportunity to thrive in your professional and personal life. With significant paid leave, flexible scheduling, and health and wellness programs available through both federal and DCAA-wide programs, you can avoid burn-out and balance all you do. DCAA employees work hard every day to protect our country by protecting the warfighter and the American taxpayer. See how you can serve your country and neighbors today. "Act" continued from page 12

you do. After you have planned your career, you must act according to the plans. After you have set the goals, you must execute the steps that move you towards those goals. It’s no use if you stick it on the wall, stare at it everyday but do nothing. Remember, act now.

4. The Art Is in Do The art of getting things done and in fact getting more done is in starting to DO. Start small if you have to, aim for the lowest hanging fruit if you have to. The important thing is to get traction for your action. That way, small victories and achievements will spur you to do more. It is true with projects and it is true with your career too. Act now is an art you hone across time.

5. If You Don’t Who Will?

You want to surpass people at work? Be a competitive advantage to the team so the boss notices? Then be the Do-er. Do not be afraid that people will think lesser of you. There is too much credit given to so called ‘thinkers’ who do nothing but talk, talk, and talk. Nothing ever gets done. They think they are thinkers. I call them time wasters. If you can act upon those plans and get things going, people will see you as some-

January 2022

one who is productive. The best part is, it does not discount you as a thinker! Who says do-ers can’t be thinkers as well?

6. The Hard Discipline of Getting into Action Getting into action and getting things done takes a lot of effort. So, it’s easy for you to stand out and be competitive if you can get into action fast and follow up fast. That is what a lot of people do not have. As long as you have the hard discipline of acting now, you will gain advantage. People like to hide behind big phrases like “I am the big picture person”, “I am better at strategies” as if these big picture and strategies are of any use without someone putting them into place.

7. Once You Start You Can’t Stop Once you gain traction for your action. Keep moving. Do not stop. You will get better at it. You will get more done and you will be more productive. That is one great advantage that is very difficult to compete with. As I mentioned, doing takes a lot of discipline. Discipline many people do not possess. Nursing Careers: Tapping into Endless Opportunities

To

by: Lee Nelson

become a nurse, you must have a genuine interest in the wellness of others, and it is a career that requires giving time and attention to people, according to Nyuma Harrison, nursing careers services specialist at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore. “It’s a people business. Sometimes, the customer isn’t always right, but it’s about how you meet their needs, how you take the time to educate him or her and how you make them feel,” she says. Nursing jobs, no matter what level, involve being hands-on healthcare professionals who have an opportunity to help someone feel better. Nurses can promote good health habits, prevent disease, and teach better living for longer lives. They can lend an understanding ear and a shoulder to cry on when a devastating illness threatens the strength of a family. Nurses also are advocates of health in their own communities. The field of nursing is booming, and there will be nursing jobs available for the foreseeable future. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that the demand for registered nurses in the United States will climb by 19 percent by 2022, 25 percent for licensed practical nurses, and 31 percent for nurse practitioners. The need for more nurses results from the millions of aging Baby Boomers and the surge of more people in the health care system due to the Affordable Care Act.

Many educational and career paths to choose

Depending on your nursing career goals, finances, and time commitments, you can choose a nursing degree that’s the right fit for you. Here’s a look at the different levels of nursing skills and what it takes to get there.

Licensed practical nurse (LPN) or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) This qualification takes the shortest amount of time to complete, sometimes as little as one year, and usually at a community college or technical school, according to the BLS. After completing a stateapproved educational program, students must pass the National Council Licensure Examination – Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN). Nearly 81 percent of first time, U.S.-educated students taking the test pass, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Many LPNs are expected to retire over the next decade, creating

January 2022

a big jump in job openings. These jobs most likely will be in rural and medically under served areas. However, there has been a push for three decades to move all nurses to the baccalaureate level. “A few hospitals took the lead on that. Then again, the need for more nurses has always been there,” Harrison says. “Most hospitals, even Johns Hopkins, still hire LPNs and associate degree nurses. But when they get hired, the administration tells them that in a year or two they will need to get an advanced degree.” LPNs ranked #19 in the Best Health Care Jobs for 2015 by U.S. News & World Report, and #41 for The 100 Best Jobs.

Registered Nurse (RN)

There are two different routes to becoming an RN. Programs options include a three-year, hospital-based nursing school program (where you receive a diploma), or two- or four-year college program. Graduates from two-year programs earn an associate degree in nursing

(ADN). Those completing a four-year college programs earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Successful completion of any of the programs means you must take the licensing exam, called the NCLEX-RN. After passing, you apply for a license to practice in your particular state. About 85 percent of all U.S.-educated RNs pass the exam the first time, according to the NCSBN. Registered nurses ranked #6 in the Best Health Care Jobs for 2015 by U.S. News & World Report , and #9 overall for The 100 Best Jobs.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) This profession is also referred to as advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). Nurse practitioners have a lot more autonomy than regular registered nurses. To pursue this nursing career, someone must already be a registered nurse, preferably with a bachelor’s degree. But according to the BLS, some schools offer bridge programs for RNs with an associate degree or nursing diploma. Graduate level programs are also offered for

those who have a related health science field degree. Many APRNs choose to earn their doctor of nursing practice (DNP) or PhD. “Nurse practitioners can lead clinics. They can see patients,” Harrison says. “They...can have assessment and advanced practice skills along with the nursing compassion and understanding. They fill the space between a nurse and a doctor.” She says that Johns Hopkins frequently receives job inquiries from doctors, and nine out of 10 times they are looking for nurse practitioners to staff their offices. Nurse practitioners ranked #2 in the Best Health Care Jobs for 2015 by U.S. News & World Report , and also ranked #2 overall for The 100 Best Jobs.

Once someone has been in the nursing field for a while, at any level, they may want to acquire new skills and responsibilities and opportunities for increased pay. There are always “next level” opportunities to aspire to in the nursing profession. For instance, LPNs who want to become RNs can find a bridge program

at their local college or online to help them achieve that goal. Program lengths vary, and some have minimum requirements for how long someone should have been a practicing LPN before entering the program. Registered nurses with an associate degree wanting to complete a bachelor’s degree can find a bridge program to help them get there, Harrison points out. Those who have family and work commitments, can find flexible options to help them succeed. “There is a growing national movement to require all nurses to hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree ,” Harrison says. The demand for more highly skilled and educated nurses is pushing nursing schools to offer more accelerated bachelor’s and master’s degree programs . And for those interested in going from RN to Master of Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing degrees, there are plenty of those to choose from now, too. “Nursing is the only profession where you are not required to have an advanced degree,” Harrison says. “Pharmacists all have doctorate degrees. Doctors have doctorate degrees. Physical therapists have doctorate degrees. More and more, as our profession grows, the goal is to have more nurses with more advanced degrees.” But she says the good news is that there are plenty of jobs for everyone at all levels of education in nursing. “We need nurses to take care of people,” she says. “It’s that plain and simple.” Once you are a professional nurse, you might choose to focus on a particular specialty. There are numerous specialty options—each with its own education/certification requirements and related professional network or organization. You aren’t restricted to working in a hospital or doctor’s office. You can work in places such as camps, schools, emergency rooms, military bases, colleges, infection control departments, corporations, or prisons. It depends your preferences and skills.

Some of the top specialties in demand, according to the BLS, include: Perianesthesia (recovery room) nurse: The demand for these

nurses is expected to jump up to 48 percent as doctors open their own outpatient surgical clinics. Diabetes nurse: The demand likely will jump 39 percent since the disease is one of the fastest growing. Medical surgical nurse: The growth outlook is expected to increase 30 percent through 2020. Critical care nurse: Job demand will increase 26 percent in the next five years. “There are 101 things you can do in nursing. You just have to sift through all the options that fit you,” Harrison says. “For instance, I fit well into the emergency room because I’m very comfortable with change, and can really dig deep in some project and then let it go.” Technology advancements through the years have helped nurses do their jobs smarter, faster, and more efficiently. “But you can never lose that human interaction that nurses do so well. You don’t nurse the monitor or the computer. You nurse the patient,” she says. Before plunging into becoming a nurse, remember that it is a very demanding job. You can be on your feet for many hours a day caring for patients, and taking orders from others. But it can be a very satisfying career -- assessing patients, collaborating with doctors and other medical staff, supporting families, and helping to educate those you care for about their health. It’s not a job that everyone could do or wants to do. If you have the compassion, toughness, and a teamwork attitude, it might just be the one for you.

"You can never lose that human interaction that nurses do so well. You don’t nurse the monitor or the computer. You nurse the patient.” Lee Nelson of the Chicago area writes for national and regional magazines, websites, and business journals. Her work has recently appeared in Realtor.org, Nurse.org, Yahoo! Working with Different Generations in the Workplace

M

any employers these days pride themselves in maintaining a rich workplace culture. After all, diverse ideas can be a recipe for long-term success in any industry. This is where it can be valuable to have generational diversity in the workplace--but only if employees from different generational backgrounds are able to collaborate and communicate effectively. Having trouble with managing employees from different generations or helping employees from different generations see eye-to-eye? If so, then there are some tips you'll want to keep in mind.

These include: • Baby Boomers (those born immediately following WWII) •

eneration X-ers (those born in the G 60s through 1980)

eneration Y-ers/Millennials (those G born 1980 through mid 90s)

eneration Z-ers (those born mid-90s G through early 2000s) Naturally, workers from each of these generations will have different viewpoints, strengths, and weaknesses that they bring to the table. For example, many baby boomers who are still in the workplace have a strong work ethic due to the difficult times in which they grew up. On the other hand, some of them may not be as well-versed with computers and other technology as employees from more recent generations. Common Workplace Of course, this isn't a blanket statement that's true of all baby boomers, but it is a Generations Currently, there are employees from numerous gen- useful example when it comes to thinking about how generaerations in the workplace and in a variety of industries. tion gaps could potentially affect the workplace.

Tips for Working with Different Generations

Page 35

Different generations have different

With numerous generations commonly represented in today's typical work environment, it only makes sense that leaders and decision-makers should be adequately prepared to work with employees across generations. Unfortunately, this is often easier said than done.

Adapt to Communication Styles

One important thing to remember is that workers from different generations have very different expectations and strengths when it comes to communication styles. While millennials and generation Z employees are likely comfortable with sending out an e-mail to a customer or receiving e-mail communication from a superior, your older generations (such as the baby boomers within your company) may be more comfortable with making a phone call or speaking to a client face-to-face. When it comes to communicating with your multigenerational employees and having them collaborate with others, then, keep these potential strengths and weaknesses in mind. For example, rather than sending out all your team communications via e-mail, consider holding the occasional meeting or conference call.

Understand Workplace Expectations

Different generations also have different cultural expectations--especially when it comes to their work-life balance. Workers from your baby boomer and X generation likely grew up during a time when employees logged all their hours from their workplace. These workers may not bat an eye at the

cultural expectations--especially when it comes to their work-life balance.

thought of a traditional Monday through Friday, 40-hour (or more) work week. On the other hand, many millennials and generation Z-ers have grown up in a time where telecommuting has become more common. Rather than working at the office 9-5 Monday through Friday, they may have expectations to work from home a day or two a week. The key here is to encourage individuals to work in a way that's best for them and for the company. This may mean giving employees the option to telecommute on occasion while allowing those who prefer the "traditional" 9-5 to continue working their set schedules. All the while, be sure to acknowledge the efforts of all workers equally.

Get Everybody on the Same Page

Finally, understand that it's not just up to you to be prepared for working with employees across generations. Your cross-generational workers must also be able to understand how to collaborate and communicate with each other. You can foster a better environment by conducting regular teambuilding exercises and even holding functions outside of work. By getting your employees to learn more about each other and their unique backgrounds, they can better collaborate in the workplace. Article provided by Constant-Content.com

The Peace Corps is Recruiting Volunteers from Diverse Backgrounds

T

he Peace Corps, established in 1961, partners with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges at the grassroots level. While all volunteers returned home in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is working to return to service and is now actively recruiting volunteers of backgrounds historically underrepresented in the organization, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans. “As part of our mission, we seek to reflect the rich diversity of the United States abroad, bringing different perspectives and solutions to development issues in the countries we serve,” says Carol Spahn, acting director of the Peace Corps. “We also seek to create inclusion – a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility and fairness; and leverages diversity so that all individuals are able to contribute to their full potential. If you’re interested in Peace Corps service, here’s what to know.

New Challenges

While Peace Corps service is demanding for every volunteer, being from a diverse ethnic background can introduce additional challenges, according to those who have served. “I had to deal with people’s expectations about Americans looking a certain way. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation Hmong-American who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019.

“Volunteers are international cultural ambassadors representing the United States. That’s why it’s so important our body of volunteers actually reflects the Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. diversity of the country.”

with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, Mexican-American Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively, instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica.

Bringing Skills Home

Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. I also translated most of my CPR and first aid materials into Kyrgyz,” says Lee, who notes that, “Volunteering opens so many doors in the future, and the people you meet along the way will help you.” To learn more about Peace Corps or to connect with a recruiter, visit peacecorps.gov.
