They’re relatively easy to eat and prepare, and with so many customizations and toppings—it is no wonder why cheeseburgers are one of the most popular foods in America. Every cheeseburger consumer is extremely passionate about how they like them cooked and topped. How do you like yours? There are many theories about the origins of the cheeseburger, but many agree that it was created sometime between 1924 and 1926 by Lionel Sternberger, who was only 16 years old at the time. While working in his father’s sandwich shop in Pasadena, California, he decided to add a slice of American cheese onto a cooking hamburger. He and his father both liked it, and thus decided to add it to the menu. They originally called it the “cheese hamburger”. Customers enjoyed it too, and thus the cheeseburger was born. Some believe the cheeseburger was invented in Denver, Colorado by Louis Ballast in his restaurant, the Humpty Dumpty Drive-in. Use 80% lean and 20% fat ground beef. Its relatively high fat content makes for a juicy burger.

For the proper crust on a burger, skip the grill and cook on cast iron. Use canola oil, and high heat. Heat a cast-iron skillet until it begins to smoke. Add canola oil or another type of neutral cooking oil and add the burgers. Do not touch them until it is time to flip. Flip them only once.
Make sure they are cooked exactly how you want them by checking the temperature as follows: 140 degrees F for rare, 145 for medium rare, 160 for medium, 165 for medium well, and 170 for well done.
Don’t be afraid to mix cheeses. To melt the cheese onto the burger, add a few splashes of water and cover the pan. The steam will make the cheese gooey and enrobe the burger.

The Story BEHIND THE CHEESES Frico's heritage dates back many years, in Holland Frico started out as a co-operation in 1898 when six Dutch dairy factories united into what was named the "foundation of Friesian Cooperative Dairy Export Association." Their first export was butter, followed by a selection of top quality cheeses that soon had people asking for more. Frico has a history full of taste and memorable moments that made Frico what it is today: the largest producer of cheese in Holland, making cheese with all the love and passion for quality just like all those years ago!
Creamy spinach & potato gratin
Shopping List •
2 tablespoons butter

4 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

8 slices Frico Gouda cheese
•
2 teaspoons oregano
•
2 handfuls spinach
•
2 medium garlic cloves, minced
•
1 cup milk
•
1 cup cream
•
salt and pepper to taste
•
3/2 teaspoon garlic powder
•
1 bay leaf
PREPARATION 1. Preheat oven to 360°F. 2. Combine milk and cream in a small pot over medium heat. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a bay leaf. Gently cook until just warm. Discard the bay leaf. 3. Grease medium oven dish (about 8×10 inches) with butter and add minced garlic. Create one layer of sliced potatoes in the bottom of the oven dish. 4. Arrange 5 to 6 cheese slices in a layer over potatoes and sprinkle some oregano. Spread spinach leaves over the cheese, then layer the rest of potatoes on top. 5. Pour warm milk over potatoes. Use a spoon to gently press potatoes down, making sure it is well-covered with the milk. 6. Shred the remaining Frico Gouda cheese and sprinkle on top with a little oregano. 7. Bake for 60-75 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Serve immediately.
