KEEP CALM It’s the Secret to Aging Well

The amount of stress we experience over a lifetime and the impact it has on cognitive aging has remained an underresearched area, until recently.

s we get older, our physical and mental abilities decline, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Research suggests that the way we live our lives—our diets, our exercise regimes—can have a big impact on how we age. And it’s not just about the things we do to age well. It’s also about the things we avoid.

Old people who haven’t experienced much stress in their life perform just as well on cognitive tasks as young people.

There is a large field of research that seeks to understand the factors that cause different rates of age-related decline. In particular, scientists look at how these factors change our ability to remember and pay attention to things in everyday life. We call such changes “cognitive aging.” Earlier work has looked at how diet or doing physical or mental exercise (sudoku, crosswords) affects aging. However, the amount of stress we experience over a lifetime and the impact it has on cognitive aging has remained an under-researched area, until recently. A Lifetime of Stress Work from our lab and from others has found that many of the negative aspects of cognitive aging seen in older people appear to be linked to the amount of stress they have experienced in their life. A new genetic test for prostate cancer has recently become available: Oncotype DX. This biopsy-based test, which is also used for breast cancer, can be combined with other measures to predict how aggressive a prostate cancer will be. It uses advanced genomic science to reveal the unique biology of a tumor, allowing patients and doctors to optimize decisions about treatment. The test analyzes tumor genes extracted via a needle biopsy to predict the aggressiveness and biological makeup of the cancer. This is an advantage because neither of these things can be done otherwise without a pathological analysis of the prostate tissue, which requires that the prostate be surgically removed. It measures the expression of twelve cancer-related genes representing four biological pathways and five reference genes, and these are then combined to calculate the Genomic Prostate Score (GPX). This biopsy-based score has been clinically validated as a predictor of aggressive prostate cancer. The Oncotype DX test examines certain genes in a sample of your tumor, which are collected during a prostate biopsy. This allows the urologist to understand how those genes are interacting with one another and functioning. Determining the activity of the genes and how they influence and regulate the behavior of the prostate tumor gives a deeper understanding of how likely it is that your prostate cancer will grow and spread.

There are not enough words to praise the virtues of cabbage. Paleolithic humans were cultivating it at the end of the Stone Age, making cabbage the oldest-known cultivated vegetable. Today it is a common crop everywhere in the world, and a wild variety can still be found in the lands around the Mediterranean. The health benefits of cabbage were especially appreciated by ancient Greek, Roman, and Chinese peoples. The ancients considered cabbage a panacea and used it both internally to treat various ailments and externally to treat wounds and prevent infections. During wars, Roman soldiers would carry cabbage with them for wound care. Greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, and Roman historian and politician Cato the Elder, who had extensive knowledge of plants, recorded its therapeutic qualities. Cato the Elder, for example, said cabbage can be used to treat many conditions, including the plague. Dr. Jean Valnet, an early pioneer of natural medicine, also noted that cabbage helps heal many conditions, including infected wounds, open sores, rheumatism, pain, varicose veins, and anthrax (a disease caused by bacterial infection), just to mention a few. Why is cabbage such a powerful remedy? Valnet noted that the plant hormones (phytohormones), enzymes, minerals, and other compounds found in cabbage, give it a unique ability to eliminate toxins from the human body. Cabbage has a particular affinity for extracting toxic fluids from human tissue and helping the body eliminate poisonous elements that cause and maintain illness. Afterward, cabbage ensures a fast and thorough tissue healing, thus preventing the return of illness. Used in recipes such as coleslaw, fresh juice, or soups, cabbage has a number of benefits, including cleansing toxins and excess urates (salts formed from uric acid). It also helps the body regulate estrogen levels and efficiently shed extra pounds. To this end, here is an easy, tasty, healthy cabbage soup to help you eliminate the weight that showed up over the holidays. This is one of my favorite recipes, but you can vary the types and amount of vegetables to suit

For men with an elevated PSA, high-risk for prostate cancer, or who’ve had a previous biopsy, Oncotype DX may be the next step in assessing the potential growth rate of the tumor or how aggressive the cancer currently is. This directly leads to which treatment option is right for the patient.

For men with an elevated PSA, Oncotype DX may be the next step in assessing the potential growth rate of the tumor. Three studies presented at the 110th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association last year showed this test improved the ability to assess the risks for patients with both high- and low-risk prostate cancers, and even reduced cost of overall prostate cancer care. It has also shown promise in helping to further examine the biology and development of prostate cancer in African-American men who are at a high risk for the disease. Easy Steps to Get Your Family Meals Back on Track Post-Holiday

WAVEBREAKMEDIA/ISTOCK

Getting children involved in cooking helps them feel happy about healthy meals. Start the new year right with healthy meals.

By Barbara Danza | Epoch Times Staff If your kitchen looked anything like mine this holiday season, there was a constant stream of cookies and pies, rich sauces, and fatty meats, chips, dips, cheeses, crackers, and candies— oh my! It was delightful and delicious, but we’ve had our fill, and we are feeling a little bit run down. Sound familiar? Now that the gifts have been unwrapped, the halls un-decked, and the goodies consumed, it’s time to right this train and incorporate more consistent, nutritious offerings back into our family meal plan. By refocusing on clean, whole foods and reducing processed foods and sugars, everyone’s energy levels, immune systems, and carb addictions should be in check in no time. 1. Restock The first step, of course, is to restock the fridge and pantry. Head to the grocery store or your favorite online delivery service and stock up on an abundance of healthful ingredients. A focus on fresh fruit and vegetables and lean meats, organic whenever possible, is a great place to start. Think chicken,

fish, turkey, lean beef, and a super colorful and plentiful variety of selections from the produce section. Additionally, plenty of eggs, all natural dairy, a variety of broths and seasonings, legumes, nuts, and high-quality dark chocolate to snack on will round things out. For bread, my personal favorites are Food For Life’s Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted grain options. At a minimum, it’s best to choose organic, whole-grain breads. Don’t forget to pick up spring water, perhaps some vegetable juices, and teas. 2. Make Meals Ahead of Time Once the kitchen is full of healthy ingredients, consider blocking out some time to prepare some make-ahead meals. Many comforting winter meals can be prepared in advance and enjoyed on busier days when they are most needed. For dinners, think soups, stews, chilis, roasts, and even meatloaf. “Hide” extra vegetables in each of these to kick up the nutrient impact of each serving. Utilize helpful containers and your freezer for longerterm storage. For breakfast, bake a flavorful egg casserole that

family members can pull from all week long, or simply hard boil eggs to begin each day with a punch of protein. 3. Maintain Easy Options For snacks, offer fruits and nuts for crunch and sweetness. Clean and pre-bag raw veggies for kids to grab themselves. Keep frozen vegetables on hand for superquick side dishes, Whenever possible, put your slow-cooker to work. Be sure your kitchen is devoid of unhealthy options. Moments of fatigue or stress do happen, and that’s when poor food decisions are made. Don’t allow that to be an option at your house. 4. Curb the Cravings After all of that holiday celebrating, it’s entirely possible you and each of your family members will find yourselves craving sugary carbs. Be sure to have viable alternatives on hand like nuts, dark chocolate, perhaps some lightly sweetened yogurt, and lots of fruit for natural sweetness. Finally, make sure everyone’s drinking plenty of water and getting healthy doses of sunshine, exercise, and rest each day. With healthy habits back in place and the kitchen cleared of holiday indulgences, your family will launch 2016 with the energy and focus they need to achieve their goals for the year.

Many of the negative aspects of cognitive aging seen in older people appear to be linked to the amount of stress they have experienced in their life.

We began by measuring the number of stressful events experienced over the lifetime. We looked at a number of factors ranging from experiencing a major illness or losing a loved one to changing one’s social habits or moving home. Old people who have experienced a lot of stress tend to perform worse on cognitive tasks than those who experienced less stress. Crucially, old people who haven’t experienced much stress in their life perform just as well on cognitive tasks as young people. This suggests that stress has a big impact on mental ability and that the eect of this only appears in old age. Indeed, young people did not dier from each other in their performance of cognitive tests whatever their life experience of stress had been. Not only that, but also the patterns of brain activity of the people taking part in our study reflect the same eect: Older people (aged 60 to 80) who have experienced less stress have brain activity similar to that of younger people. However, when it comes to the brain activity of those elderly people who have led stressful lives, we find something very dierent going on. This brain activity may give us some clues as to what’s going wrong and where in the brain it is happening. For instance, depending on the task involved, we can see that a significant amount of stress in a person’s lifetime can aect their ability to hold items in their shortterm memory and can also reduce their ability to stop irrelevant thoughts from interfering with this process.

There are many ways to de-stress; do what works for you.

In particular, stress appears to aect an area of the brain essential for the formation of new memories (the hippocampus). But the long-term eects of stress are not only apparent in memory: Recently it has been shown for the first time that brain processes and behavior associated with our control of attention and movement are also impaired. This may relate to brain activity you use trying to stop a physical movement (such as moving your arm) that you have already initiated, or activity linked to controlling where your attention is focused. Do Something About It So what can we do about it? Most of us know when we are feeling stressed. For those of us who don’t, smart devices can be used to alert us to the presence of potential dangers. By being aware of stress and its long-term consequences, we can begin to tackle it and to find ways to lessen its consequences. The paths to de-stressing are numerous. Some people find meditation and mindfulness to be useful. For others, the same techniques could be fruitless or even dangerous. Each person needs to find what works. It may take a bit of experimenting, but the payo will be worth it. Just don’t expect it to do anything for your wrinkles. Nicholas Robert Cooper is the academic director of the Center for Brain Science at the University of Essex, England. Amanda Claire Marshall is a doctoral researcher, and Nicolas Geeraert, Ph.D., is a senior lecturer there. This article was originally published on The Conversation.

Setting the goal to improve fitness rather than lose weight can be more motivating.

Measuring Up: This Year, Aim for Fitness Over Fat Loss for Long-Term Success Bleeding Gums?

For more information, please call: 646-501-2679

By Simon Rosenbaum

Getting fit and losing weight are consistently among the top New Year’s resolutions, and January is the boom period for the billion-dollar gym industry. While any attempt to incorporate more exercise into our lives should be welcomed, it’s time to rethink the reasons for joining the gym. And, in particular, the way we measure success when it comes to exercise. Weight loss is one of the most common reasons why people start an exercise program, linking sweating it out with reduced fat. Sadly, they’re setting themselves up to fail because there’s good evidence that exercise in the absence of dietary modification is not all that effective for weight loss. In other words, “you can’t outrun a bad diet.” In fact, the idea that exercise will lead to weight loss is potentially dangerous because it acts as a disincentive for people who stick to their exercise goals only to find the scales haven’t turned in their favor—and throw in the towel.

A Better Measure Research published a few months ago shows the likelihood of an obese man achieving normal weight without surgery is one in 210. And the chances are only a little better for women, at one in 124. Among those who manage to lose significant weight (at least 5 percent of bodyweight), at least half will regain it within two years.

Exercise can directly improve fitness independent of changes in weight. Weight loss is very important for improving health and reducing risk of chronic disease. But when focusing on the reasons people should be physically active and engage in regular exercise, fitness, as opposed to fatness is a better focus. Exercise can directly improve fitness independent of changes in weight. And it may be protective of developing chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, even for people who are overweight or obese. But the importance of trying to lose weight through broad lifestyle change shouldn’t be ignored. A recent study of over 1.3 million Swedish men found that when it comes to risk of dying early, high fitness isn’t protective for people who are obese. But it showed fitness was an important factor nonetheless and didn’t measure other key health outcomes. Most importantly, improving fitness is a tangible and achievable outcome, so it’s more motivating. Poor fitness is a modifiable factor associated with heart disease. Other benefits people may gain from exercise, apart from

weight loss, include improved mental health, improved sleep, and reduced risk of conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Helpful Hints Joining a gym may work for some, but it’s not the only way of getting the benefits of regular exercise. Here are some practical tips to get moving. Avoid an ‘All-or-Nothing’ Mentality. And remember that every bit of time spent exercising instead of being sedentary counts. When you’re in the habit of exercising regularly, it’s easier to keep going and find the motivation to continue. But when you’ve been inactive for a while, such as over the holiday season, it’s often difficult to overcome the mindset of feeling overwhelmed and out of touch with exercising. This often leaves people feeling unsure about where to begin. To avoid feeling lost, try setting some realistic, and achievable goals that can be written down and achieved every day. Plan for the worse-case scenario (such as those extra long lunches). Even one set of squats, five minutes of yoga, or a brief walk around the block may be enough to avoid the build-up of post-holiday exercise fear. Seek Help Getting Active. Especially if you have a chronic or complex medical conditions. If weight loss is your primary aim, seek help from an accredited practicing dietitian to help modify your diet. Move More. When it comes to exercise, forget the scales and focus on moving more and sitting less. Wearable technology can help with monitoring and goal setting. Use other ways of measuring progress, such as how breathless you feel after walking up that set of stairs or how much easier it is to carry the groceries, as well. Don’t Forget Resistance Training. These are muscle building exercise. Working muscles is not only for young men; it has considerable benefits for men and women of all ages. Most importantly, the best exercise program is the one that’s realistic for your situation, enjoyable and progressively more challenging. And it’s not necessarily one limited to the gym. Simon Rosenbaum is a lecturer, at the University of New South Wales in Australia. This article was originally published on The Conversation.

EMPOWERING CONFIDENCE Through Beauty F

When a woman is preoccupied with appearance issues, it can become a big distraction and affect how she handles life situations.

or the past 15 years, Jamé Heskett, M.D., a specialist in non-invasive, anti-aging therapies, has made it her mission to empower women. On the surface, the weight-loss and antiaging treatments make women look better, but Dr. Heskett’s goal is that each client also feel more vital and confident, which is not necessarily a given after cosmetic procedures. Key to calling forth this confidence is the relationships she builds with patients. When Dr. Heskett went to medical school in the 1990s, she was trained to use the managed-care system, which means spending 15 to 20 minutes with as many patients as possible every day. But she wanted to care for people more holistically, so she studied homeopathy and naturopathy, and eventually built her Upper East Side practice, The Wellpath, to allow her to get to know her patients more intimately. “I’m just like their best friend, but I’m also the doctor,” she said. And in some cases, clients also become an extension of family. Fundamental to this relationship is understanding as much about a client as she can. So instead of starting with the premise of just fixing the particular physical problem that brought someone to her office, Dr. Heskett first tries to understand them more holistically, learning about any psychological factors that might be affecting them, as well as their lifestyle, goals, family history, beliefs, and finances. For example, when someone wants to lose weight, she doesn’t just put them under a machine. She also helps them figure out a diet that pleases their taste buds. “I always work within a person’s natural palate,” she said, “I don’t believe in a one-size-fitsall dietary regimen.” In her new book, “The Well Path: Lose 20 Pounds, Reverse the Aging Process, Change Your Life,” Dr. Heskett recommends small changes to help weight loss, such as replacing one meal a day with soup. During consultations she also talks about fitness and how to approach it in a fun way. For any who are interested, she also gladly shares her own fitness passion: hiking. When pregnant with her third child at age 42, Dr. Heskett didn’t exercise for fear of losing the baby. After the birth of her son, she found herself totally out of shape and carrying an extra 60 pounds. Being a mom and a doctor, frequent gym visits were not feasible, so she started walking the trails near her home with her children. A year and many trails later, all of the weight came off and she was hooked on hiking. Inspired by this experience, Dr. Heskett added a hiking program to her practice and now takes interested patients for a day of beginner hiking once a month. Her caring, personalized approach has garnered her an international clientele, mainly through word of mouth. She has also been a featured expert on TV shows like “Dr. Oz” and in publications like “First for Women,” “Prevention,” and “Instyle.”

When you glow you feel good, and when you feel good you glow.

Dr. Jamé Heskett (R) encourages women to join her on monthly hikes. Mind and Body When a woman is preoccupied with appearance issues such as dark circles under her eyes or extra flab around her midsection, it can become a big distraction and affect how she handles life situations. For example, she may not hold a conversation well with her boss, a new client, or a new acquaintance. Lightening those circles or removing the extra inches can help eliminate deep insecurities. “If a woman feels comfortable in her own skin, which tends to be from a natural result, then she radiates so much inner positivity, which almost takes care of the problem in and of itself,” Dr. Heskett said. One of her patients, a successful woman in her mid-50s, had struggled for years with the insecurity of not being as pretty as her sister. She had tried to mask her insecurities by getting several plastic surgeries, but the results were not optimal. The woman came to Dr. Heskett, hoping to enhance her appearance in a more natural way. After a lengthy consultation, Dr. Heskett treated the woman with carboxy therapy, a more than 100-year-old technique that involves injecting carbon dioxide into the skin to stimulate the body’s healing reactions. Injections draw oxygen and blood to the area, helping break up scars and form new, healthy tissue. Due to her surgeries, the woman’s skin had lost oxygen and nutrients, so this treatment along with therapeutic doses of vitamin C, helped her skin recover and look more youthful. “It had better color, better texture, … and a lot of her scars had gone away,” Dr. Heskett said. The woman was delighted with how she looked afterward, but she was even more thankful to be free of the insecurity that her appearance had been causing, Dr. Heskett said. To get natural-looking results, Dr. Heskett uses a variety of non-invasive anti-aging and weight-loss therapies in her practice. Non-invasive means no surgery and minimal or no downtime. And some of these procedures, like the carboxy, stimulate the body’s natural propensity to heal, so the results are very natural and last months or years. She also incorporates homeopathy and naturopathic treatments into care regimens to enhance wellbeing and results. And Dr. Heskett can vouch for these therapies, which treat issues like under-eye circles,

cellulite, stretch marks, scarring, and hair loss, because she’s tried them all on herself before recommending them to anyone else. “I have never done a treatment on anyone else that I have not tried on myself first. I would never do it. Even if I don’t need it, I still have experienced it to the full extent,” she said. So, although part of the glow she exudes can be attributed to these therapies, the other part comes from seeing clients’ lives change. “In the last 15 years, really, any angst that the woman has come up with, I’ve eventually found a solution to in one form or another because I always felt like that was my job. … That’s pretty much my mission. I want women to live the optimal life,” she said.

Dr. Jamé Heskett offers over 15 therapies and has tried them all herself.

Noninvasive Anti-Aging & Weight-Loss Therapies Carboxy Therapy

iLipo

Dermapen

For stubborn fat deposits, cellulite, hair loss, loose skin, wrinkles, under-eye circles, and unevenness from invasive procedures like liposuction.

For weight loss.

For fine lines, skin laxity, acne scarring, surface imperfections, and stretch marks.

Originally developed to improve circulation in people with narrowed arteries, carboxy therapy uses injections of carbon dioxide to shrink fat cells, stimulate collagen, break down scar tissue, and promote the growth of healthy new tissue. It helps the body become healthier and more vital over time.

Cold laser light selectively interacts with the surface of fat cells causing them to shrink in the same way they would with diet and exercise. The contents of the fat cell are then burned when you exercise or metabolized as waste via the liver. This laser stimulates a natural process, so there are no side effects or downtime.

Micro-injuries to the skin activate its natural ability to repair. Unlike previous micro-needling devices that rolled over the skin, Dermapen’s spring-loaded stamping technology allows for customized depth and speed, and thus more controllable and successful results. It is excellent for all skin types, including those at risk of hyperpigmentation from traditional laser treatments.

You have to cleanse properly, using a light cleanser, exfoliate gently but not as often [as in summer], and then moisturize with a richer product than you might use in summer. Make sure to do this in the morning and night. One thing that is still really important is to use sunscreen even in the cold winter months because UV rays are everyday, all year around, and studies show that when you use proper sun protection all year around, you have a significantly decreased risk of both premature aging and skin cancer. SECRETS OF KOREAN MEDICINE

Clean Lungs and Healthy Tonsils Prevent the Common Cold Break dependency on antibiotics, skip surgery, and stop frequent colds and tonsillitis Part 12 COURTESY OF DR. SEO HYO-SEOK

By Dr. Seo Hyo-seok The common cold is one of the most common acute illnesses. When we have one, we literally experience the feeling of coldness, secrete mucous via our nose, and cough and sneeze in order to prevent the nasal discharge from entering the lungs. Colds are also often accompanied by sore throats (acute pharyngitis) due to the inflammation of the pharynx, which is the membrane-lined cavity that connects our mouth and nose with the esophagus. The symptoms of a sore throat are very similar to the symptoms of tonsillitis.

My opinion is that invasion by pathogens becomes easier after a tonsillectomy.

The Tonsils’ Health Score The state of health of the tonsils can be calculated based on how often they swell.

Those who have frequently swollen tonsils get a score of 50 out of 100, while those suffering from common colds, tonsillitis, or bronchitis two or three times a year get a score of 70. Those who don’t suffer such illnesses or swollen tonsils get a score of 100. When the tonsils are healthy and strong, they produce an abundance of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, which help ward off pathogens in the oral cavity and nasal tract. However, lymphocytes produced by weakened tonsils are not able to successfully combat pathogens, thereby resulting in prolongation of symptoms. When you catch a cold, your body generates heat in the form of a fever, activates coughing, and increases the number of immune cells being produced to combat the infectious elements. When tonsillitis manifests, it is the lymphocytes in the tonsils generating inflammation as they fight against invading pathogens. The manifestations of swollen tonsils—difficulty swallowing saliva, body aches, and throbbing pain—and high fever are all indications of this fight. Prevention and Treatment By preventing the common cold, it is possible to prevent tonsillitis as well as asthma and rhinitis (inflammation of the mucus membrane of the nose). However, many drugs are designed to eliminate the symptoms only in the short term and are not helpful in the long run. Although taking fever-reducing drugs and antibiotics may get rid of the symptoms effectively, repeated use can induce even severer colds by degrading the self-healing ability of the body. Since the common cold is ultimately the result of a problem in immunity, it is important to prevent them by fortifying the immune system.

Pharyngeal Tonsil (Adenoid) Lingual Tonsils

Palatine Tonsils

STOCK_SHOPPE

Tonsillitis is an acute inflammation that generally occurs in the palatine tonsils, which are located on both sides of the root of the tongue at the back of the mouth. The tonsils are lymphatic glands that are the first line of immune protection for the body. Your body actually has five tonsils total. The pharyngeal tonsil or adenoid is located in the upper part of the throat where it opens into the nasal cavity. The other two are the lingual tonsils, which are aggregations of tissue on the surface of the base of the tongue. Similar to a cold, the symptoms of tonsillitis disappear within one or two weeks without needing any particular treatment, unless there is some sort of complication. Because they go away on their own, people tend to consider tonsillitis and common colds as trivial illnesses and ignore them. But this is not desirable because there is always a reason why the human body displays certain symptoms. Another similarity between colds and tonsillitis is their cause. With both, failure of pulmonary functions to work normally leads to degradation of the immune system, leaving the body susceptible to infection.

A healthy immune system will prevent frequent colds.

Your body actually has five tonsils. Two palatine tonsils, two lingual tonsils, and one pharyngeal tonsil, also called the adenoid.

LJUPCO/ISTOCK

If you suffer cold with fevers, sore throats, or tonsillitis, the tonsils can become enlarged, a condition called hypertrophy. Western medicine treats repeated enlargement of the tonsils and frequent tonsillitis by surgically removing the palatine tonsils because of the view that the remaining three can compensate for the loss sufficiently. However, my opinion is that invasion by pathogens becomes easier after a tonsillectomy because the palatine tonsils are a key first line of defense for the immune system. On the other hand, if the swollen tonsils are not removed, but rather the cause of the swelling is found and treated, it is possible to restore them to health. If the tonsils are healthy and don’t swell for two to three years, hypertrophy will disappear. Healthy tonsils will also prevent colds with fevers and not easily become swollen. This in turn has a big impact on pneumonia risk and helps ward off pneumonia caused by certain types of bacterial infection for the next four to five decades. It is true that if you remove the palatine tonsils, you won’t experience any adverse symptoms right away, and although you may feel more comfortable after a tonsillectomy, in the long term, tonsillectomy is not

the correct choice, not only for the sake of the tonsils, but also for the health of your immune system. In most cases, a tonsillectomy is performed during childhood, and patients don’t experience significant disadvantages because of the absence of tonsils since their immunity is quite good during this stage of life. However, as time passes, their immunity will more rapidly degrade. In particular, in mid to late life, when pulmonary functions degrade due to accumulation of toxic substances, it is only possible to ward off pneumonia caused by bacillus bacteria if the palatine tonsils are healthy. Therefore, it is essential to refrain from undergoing a tonsillectomy without careful consideration. The throat is an important path to the lungs and heart and accordingly has a large number of lymphatic glands. The removal of the tonsils, which some people want to do merely because they have suffered several bouts of swelling and some discomfort, may eventually induce asthma and pneumonia 40 years later because the tonsils are not protecting them and keeping pathogens from getting into the lungs. Fortify Your Immunity When I was young, the health score of my tonsils was only about 50 and I frequently suffered tonsillitis, which whenever it manifested, came with a chill that was quite unbearable. My research actually began in order to find a cure for my frequent bouts of tonsillitis and as the result, several decades later, I was able to develop a Korean herbal medicine that cleanses the lungs thoroughly and thus restore the health of the tonsils.

Lymphocytes produced by weakened tonsils are not able to successfully combat pathogens. Cleansing my lungs resulted in the normalization of the functions of the alveoli, the air sacs in the lungs where the blood takes on oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. Cleansing my lungs also lead to the fortification of lymphocytes and the size of my tonsils, which had been enlarged three to four times their usual size returned to normal. I was also able to avoid colds with fevers and very easily overcome the occasional sore throat that manifested. The health score of my tonsils is now 100. Cleansing the lungs is the best method of preventing not only common colds, but also tonsillitis, because clean lungs fortify the immune system and ward off pathogens that invade the body. As Hippocrates said, “The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.” It is not possible to completely prevent or recover from any disease unless the immunity of the body is fully restored. Once immunity is fortified by restoring the health of tonsils, through the reinforcement of the pulmonary functions, it is possible to prevent and fully cure not only common colds, but also various other intractable respiratory diseases induced by them. Dr. Seo Hyo-seok is the director of the Pyunkang Korean Medicine Hospital, which has seven branches in South Korea, one at Stanton University in California, and one in Atlanta. Dr. Seo entered Kyung Hee University in Korea at the top of his class and after years of research developed the PyunkangHwan herbal formula, which improves immunity by strengthening lung function. It has helped cure over 155,000 patients of various conditions. Find out more at Pyunkang.com Email: Dr.Seo@wwdoctor.com
