2013 Cross Country season preview EAGLE MEN The 2013 Embry-Riddle men’s cross country team is poised to have one of the most successful seasons in program history, returning the majority of last year’s Sun Conference championship-winning squad. Head Coach Mike Rosolino is excited to see what this year’s group can accomplish.

we are very talented. One of the benefits of having that much depth is that nobody is going to be guaranteed to run at nationals, so everyone will be challenging each other for those spots all year long.” Junior Vincent Bett is expected to lead the way for the Blue and Gold this season. Bett, an All-Conference performer in 2012, was the second Eagle finisher in five of the six races he competed in and was the top ERAU finisher at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 17). He clocked a 24:44.82 at the Sand Shark Invitational last season (Oct. 20), making him the fourthfastest Eagle runner in school history. “Vincent did a great job for us last year,” Rosolino remarked. “I expect him to step up and be our leader both on and off the course this season.”

became the 13th-fastest runner in Blue and Gold history with a 25:47.80 at the Sand Shark Invitational last year (Oct. 20). Rosolino expects to see juniors Jacob Dordick and Jason Riggs and sophomores Ryan Larson and Jamin Mays battling each other to earn the distinction of being top-five runners, which should push all four of them to get better all season long.

rosolino “We return all five of the runners that scored at nationals for us last year,” Rosolino said. “We also have some newcomers that should step in and contribute right away. Losing Evans Kirwa is a big loss, but with so much talent returning and with the new runners we have, I really believe we could see a return to being one of the top teams in the country. The potential for this team is up there with all of the other top-10 teams we’ve had.” This year’s team features eight returners from last year’s squad, including the top six Embry-Riddle finishers from the NAIA National Championships and six of the top eight ERAU finishers from The Sun Conference Championships. “This is one of the deepest teams that we have ever had,” Rosolino stated. “From our top runner all the way down through number eight,

hernandez Alec Hernandez will be looked to as a topthree runner this year after consistently finishing as one of the top three Eagles throughout the 2012 season. Hernandez, a junior, established himself as the sixth-fastest runner in ERAU history at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 20) with a time of 25:09.41. Also expected to be a team leader is senior Zachary Kraus. Kraus earned All-Conference honors in 2012 and consistently finished amongst the top four on the Eagles’ squad. Kraus

Dordick finished with six top-five ERAU finishes last year, including being the third Eagle to cross the line at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 17). His time of 26:20.72 at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 20) moved him into the 20th position on the list of top 20 runners in Eagle history. Riggs recorded a pair of top-five finishes on the team last season, highlighted by his performance at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 17) where he was the fifth and final scoring runner for the Blue and Gold. Larson ran in six meets for the Eagles in 2012, scoring points at the Mountain Dew Invitational on Sept. 15. Mays also competed in six meets last year, breaking the 27-minute mark with a 26:56.31 at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 20). Also returning for the Eagles are junior Dalton L’Heureux and sophomore Palmer Lintz, while the newcomers include junior transfer Jose Diaz, Jr. and freshmen James Armor, Andrew Carosi, Matt Graves, Paul McKenna and Cory Sayyeau.

2013 Cross Country EAGLE WOMEN The Embry-Riddle women’s cross country team comes in to 2013 as the seven-time defending Sun Conference champions, but extending that streak to eight straight seasons will be a difficult task.

staker

“We lost four of our top eight runners from last year’s team,” Rosolino said. “We’re going to need some new people to step up right away. If we are able to win conference this year, it’s really going to mean a lot to us because it’s going to mean we worked really, really hard all season.” This year’s squad features seven returners, led by defending Sun Conference champion Ellie Staker. Staker, the lone senior on the squad, was the top Eagle finisher in six of the seven races she competed in, pacing the Eagles to three team wins. At the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 20), Staker established herself as the fastest runner in program history with a time of 17:18.32. “Ellie is the defending conference champion, so it’s great to have her back,” Rosolino stated. “She is the rock of our team and we will be looking to her to lead the team once again this season.”

eaton

With just one senior, the junior class will be asked to shoulder a lot of the leadership this season. Juniors Bailey Eaton, Lauren Eschbach, Aleiyah Ross and Rebecca Love will need to step up, according to Rosolino. Eaton was a top-three finisher on the team in three races last season and broke the 20-minute mark at the Sand Shark Invitational (Oct. 20) with a 19:31.67, making her the 16th-fastest runner in Embry-Riddle history. She ran a 20:40 at the NAIA National Championships (Nov. 17) and was the fourth Eagle to cross the finish line. Eschbach competed in three races last year, finishing as the third ERAU runner at the Mountain Dew Invitational in 20:00.80 (Sept. 15). That time was just over six seconds away from moving her into 20th place on the list of fastest runners in program history. Ross and Love were consistent top-nine runners for the Eagles last season and they will be expected to compete for spots among the top five runners this year. Two years ago, Ross and Love each earned a spot among the top 20 fastest runners in school history at the USF Bulls Invitational (Sept. 9, 2011), with Eschbach running a 19:48.31 for 18th place and Love clocking a 19:28.15 to place 13th. Juniors Jaena Smith and Brittany King and sophomore Martina Tafoya are also returning for the Blue and Gold, while the newcomers include freshmen Marina LeVine, Hayley Lewis, Maite Moscoso, Annabel Steiner and Stephany Valesco.

Mike Rosolino

12th Season

Rhodes (1996)

Over the last 11 cross country seasons, Mike Rosolino’s harriers have dominated Sun Conference competition. The men’s team has eight league titles to its credit, while the women’s team has topped the conference standings in each of the last seven seasons. The Eagles’ run began in 2005 when the Embry-Riddle men captured the program’s first league and NAIA Regional titles and made their first team appearance at the NAIA National Championship. A year later, Rosolino’s harriers repeated that performance and were joined by the ERAU women who claimed their first regional and conference crowns. Rosolino has been named The Sun Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year 14 times in his Embry-Riddle career - seven times for the men and seven on the women’s side – and the NAIA Region XIV Coach four times. He picked up his latest league coaching accolade in 2012 after leading both teams to yet another conference championship. The men took fifth place overall at the NAIA National Championship in 2009, with three runners earning All-America honors for the first time in program history, while the women finished 16th that same season. Rosolino coached Evans Kirwa to his second All-America honor in 2011, the first Eagle runner to accomplish the feat in program history. In 2005, Rosolino was tasked with launching the track and field program at Embry-Riddle. His penchant for success is evident in track and field as well as he has led the men to six conference championships and the women to four league titles in the last eight seasons. Rosolino has coached numerous conference champions, 115 NAIA All-Americans and six NAIA National Champions who have won 13 individual national championships: Beth McCubbin (1000m: 2008, 2009), Crystal Bardge (100m hurdles: 2011, 2012; 60m hurdles: 2011), Sam Vazquez (1000m: 2011), Nicole Bonk (3000m Race Walk: 2012, 2013; 5000m Race Walk: 2012), Reta Woodard (Weight Throw: 2012; Hammer Throw: 2013) and Mike Edwards (High Jump: Indoor 2013, Outdoor 2013). Along with training top athletes, Rosolino sets the highest standards for his athletes in the classroom. In the past 11 seasons, he has coached 56 NAIA Scholar Athletes and his teams have also consistently earned NAIA Scholar Team recognition, including four in 2012-13. Rosolino came to Embry-Riddle from Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., where he spent two years on the coaching staff for the Blue Hose. He began his stint at Presbyterian as an assistant coach and was elevated to the head job after just six months. Despite the brevity of his tenure with the program, Rosolino guided the Blue Hose to their best finishes in school history, producing two South Atlantic Conference Runners of the Year and a Freshman of the Year in the process. Prior to earning his position within the Presbyterian athletic department, Rosolino spent four academic years (1997-01) as the Director of Residence Life in Clinton. He also served as Resident Director for one year (1996-97) while attending graduate school. A former standout runner for Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., Rosolino helped the Lynx to three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) titles from 1993-95. In his final season, he assumed the role of team captain and finished 11th overall at the SCAC Championship meet. Rosolino also ran two seasons for the Rhodes track team, competing in the middle to long distance races. In 1995, he finished fifth at the SCAC Championships in the steeplechase. An Academic All-American for Rhodes in 1994 and 1995, Rosolino was a National Merit finalist and earned distinction as a National Science Scholar. Rosolino earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Rhodes in 1996. He went on to receive his Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina in 1998 with an emphasis on student personnel services. Rosolino also holds a Level II certification from USA Track and Field. He earned a second masters degree in Theology from Loyola College in New Orleans in 2009. Rosolino and his wife Carrie have been married for 16 years and reside in Port Orange with daughter Lynnlee and son Tanner.

2013 Cross Country the sun conference AVE MARIA

Ave Maria, Fla. EMBRY-RIDDLE

Daytona Beach, Fla. The Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Conference, is heading into its 24th season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The institutions in the conference believe in strong educational commitment combined with balanced athletic competition. Originally formed in March 1990 as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (FIAC), The Sun Conference was established as a conference for small independent institutions within the NAIA. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league unveiled its new name, “The Sun Conference” on August 18, 2008 to be inclusive of member schools from Georgia and South Carolina. Under the guidance of commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and field and women’s volleyball. Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles. In 2013-14, 36 teams made national tournament appearances. The Embry-Riddle men’s tennis team captured the 2013 NAIA National Championship while the Eagles’ women’s golf and baseball teams finished third in their respective national championships. Additionally, the league racked up numerous individual national titles as Embry-Riddle’s Patrick Besch won the ITA/NAIA National singles title, while the Eagles’ Reta Woodard, Nicole Bonk and Mike Edwards won national titles in track and field. Northwood’s Ra’Shad James was named the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in 2013 while ERAU’s Deni Zmak was named the Ward Ballinger Award winner in men’s tennis. Ad-

ditionally, Embry-Riddle’s Dave Paschal earned national Coach of the Year honors for men’s tennis. In 2013-14 alone, 64 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 144 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes. Embry-Riddle finished first in The Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup, which is awarded annually to the strongest athletic program in the league. Since the league’s inception in 1990, only five teams have captured the Commissioner’s Cup, formerly known as the All-Sports Trophy. Embry-Riddle won its 14th straight cup in 2013-14, continuing to set the mark for cups won. Former member Nova Southeastern is second with five honors, St. Thomas is third (2), while Webber International and Flagler each earned the award during the first two years of the conference. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league recruited new members as SCAD Savannah joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of South Carolina Beaufort, Johnson and Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.) within the last four years, along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools.

DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community. The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March. Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community. Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NASCAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona International Speedway is one of the most recognizable racetracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

6

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destinations in the United States. Every year, millions of vacationers flock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

55

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

70.4º 200

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant climate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland.

Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, including barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Italian, Thai, seafood, Cuban, health and natural foods.

Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework. Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations. The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cultural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.

History

On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled

38

the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

Academics

Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels. At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate assistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through universitywide voice mail and e-mail.

Housing

Embry-Riddle’s on-campus housing is an integral part of the university experience. It gives students the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and to appreciate the unique values that everyone brings to this diverse institution.

THE B.E.S.T. PROGRAM

b.e.s.t. program

The Braddock Education Success Team (BEST) Program was incorporated into the Embry-Riddle Athletic Program during the 1999-00 academic year. The BEST Program is a branch of the Braddock Foundation, which was established by Robert & Lois Braddock. It is currently sponsored by their daughter and Spruce Creek Fly-in resident, Cherie Keemar, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael. The BEST program offers tutoring and mentoring programs to assist student-athletes in managing their time between academics, athletics and social development. One of the fundamental components of the BEST Program is Study Hall, which is for student-athletes who are required to attend according to stipulations set by each respective team’s coaching staff. Study Hall is a place where tutors and mentors are available for student-athletes throughout the academic year. With its clearly defined criteria and rules of conduct, Study Hall strives to provide a structured environment that will benefit student-athletes by improving study habits, honing focus and

providing one-on-one learning opportunities. It is not intended to be a substitute for regular class attendance and routine study, but is designed as an essential tool to help student-athletes achieve their academic objectives. Dave Therneau serves as the Academic Enhancement Coordinator of the BEST Program. He and other BEST Program staff members oversee the daily operations of the Academic Advancement Center where all students, including athletes, can go and receive tutoring in many of the courses and subjects that are part of the curriculum at Embry-Riddle. Embry-Riddle is in the process of constructing a new College of Arts & Sciences building. In it will house a 9,000 square foot facility dedicated to the University’s Academic Achievement Center, which includes the BEST Program.

2013 Cross Country National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics In the NAIA, a dedication to leadership development is balanced with sports accomplishment. A trailblazer in providing equal opportunity for all student-athletes. An expectation of ethical behavior, fairness in competition, access to athletic scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership development. At the core of all of this — character. The seed of the NAIA began in 1937 with the tip-off of a men’s basketball tournament that has become the longest running basketball tournament in the country, celebrating 75 years in 2012. Out of the tournament grew the NAIA, an association of close to 300 member schools and more than 60,000 student-athletes. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Most recently, the association opened the doors to the NAIA Eligibility Center, where prospective student-athletes are evaluated for academic and athletic eligibility. It delivers on a larger promise of integrity by leveling the playing field, guiding student-athlete success, and ensuring fair competition. Providing student-athletes a chance to connect with NAIA schools and coaches helps them make the best decision to prepare them for success in both college and athletics.

champions of character respect • Responsibility • Integrity • Sportsmanship • servant Leadership The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affiliated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. The Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement. Additionally, the Student-Athlete Leadership Team assists in evaluation and feedback on the overall student-athlete experience. In 2012-13, Embry-Riddle student-athletes, coaches and staff contributed logged 2,285 hours in community service hours.

Members of Embry-Riddle’s Student-Athlete Leadership Team volunteered at the Children’s Home Society, helping to organize their Christmas toy donations.

At the beginning of the year, teams whose studentathletes have arrived on campus early for preseason workouts, take a few hours off practice to help new Embry-Riddle students move in to on-campus housing.

Embry-Riddle’s athletic programs are involved in local elmentary school reading programs.

For the last three years, Embry-Riddle has partnered with the Food Brings Hope Initiative, bringing elementary and middle school children on to campus for special programing, including facility tours, basketball games and pizza.

In 2012, Embry-Riddle women’s soccer hosted the second annual Habitat for Humanity Invitational. The teams in the two-day tournament take a one-day break from competition to volunteer at a local Habitat for Humanity project.

In January 2013, ERAU Athletics partnered with the Embry-Riddle chapter of Phi Gamma Delta for a fundraising run from Daytona Beach to West Palm Beach. Proceeds went to to a fund for former ERAU women’s soccer play Kate Schwikert who is currently battling cancer.
