2014-15 WOMEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK Embry-Riddle women’s golf enters its final season in the NAIA as the program makes its transition to NCAA II and the Sunshine State Conference. The Eagles qualified for the NAIA National Championships, finishing in the top 11 for the 13th consecutive season. Now a more experienced group, ERAU expects to have an even better finish this season. “They’re a scrappy group, highly competitive,” Embry-Riddle Head Coach Maria Lopez said. “I think the more they do and the more they play, the better they’re going to get. We’ve got some experience, but we’ve got a lot of youth as well. They’re adaptive to competition. Competition just makes them better. The bigger the stage, the better they are.”

and determined and refuses to back down. She is always looking to make a difference for her team on and off the course. She is learning how not to press too much, and with that she’s going to throw out some low numbers this year.” MacKenzie Cunningham, Fatima Carriles and Olivia Lynch make up the team’s junior class. Cunningham was

The Eagles lose only one member from last year’s squad as 2014 Third Team All American Heather Wiquist graduated. Wiquist was the team’s senior leader last year, and her role looks to be filled by current seniors Sophie Olley and Charlotte Orren. Olley has been named an All American in each of her two seasons as an Eagle. The Leeds, England native put together a stellar campaign in 2013-14 with a stroke average of 79.7 and four top-10 finishes, including two top five finishes. “Sophie thrives on competition and she’s had a very successful career here,” said Lopez. “She has dealt with an injury and a swing change here over the last year and is now coming out the other side of it.We have not seen her best golf yet so it’s going to be fun to watch her this season. She has great respect from her team and they have faith in her to lead us.”

2014 All-American MacKenzie Cunningham

Two-time All-American Sophie Olley Orren continued to improve as a junior last season. She put up a season stroke average of 86.1 and also carded the lowest 36-hole score of her career (164) at the SCAD Fall Invitational (Oct. 20-22)l. “Charlotte has come such a long way and has really become a leader for us,” Lopez stated. “She exemplifies the total package of excelling as a student and person, and has really become a solid player. She is so hungry

one of ERAU’s top performers last year and was named to the 2014 NAIA All America second team. Cunningham competed in all 10 events the Eagles last season earning five top-20 and two top-10 finishes. “She is the ultimate competitor,” Lopez said of Cunningham. “She does not like to lose. She does not like to be behind anybody. We have not seen her best golf yet. She is starting to get a better handle on the mental preparation and overall picture of the game. I think we are going to see her at the top of some tournaments and that will further ignite the spark within the team.” After transferring from Western Carolina University, Carriles struggled a bit last season, her first at Embry Riddle. However, Lopez has seen major improvements in Carriles’ game during the offseason and expects her to bounce back for the 2014-15 campaign. “Fatima came into this year saying, ‘I am going to play to my ability, make a difference for my team and be disciplined with how I’m thinking,’” Lopez said. “She’s made an amazing comeback and I’m awfully proud of her to see her comitted to the process and working hard the right way. It’s great to see her able to enjoy the fruits of her labor.” Lynch, who is also the starting goalkeeper for the ERAU women’s soccer team, competed in four events for the Blue and Gold during the 2014 spring season. While she will only be able to serve the Eagles on a limited basis this year, Lopez still expects her to have a positive influence on the program. “Olivia is a force to be reckoned with and she could play at the top of our lineup at any moment,” Lopez remarked. “Last year she was able to score in the high 70’s

with very little practice. She brings an extreme level of leadership and passion due to her Army ROTC and soccer experiences. Nobody is backing down when Olivia is around. On and off the course she brings the best out of us all. Her presence, no matter how limited, is the tipping point to maximizing our potential.” Hannah Robb is coming off a very impressive freshman season during which she recorded five top 20 and two top five finishes. Robb’s best tournament finish came at The Sun Conference Championships where she placed fourth and was ERAU’s top finisher. “We call her a ‘short game genie,”’ Lopez said of Robb. “She can get up and down from anywhere. She is a fierce competitor. She really had a nice run last year with her first collegiate win and just missed All-American recognition. I think this year she’ll be right back in the hunt. She’s swinging the club better than I’ve ever seen her and she is ravenous to be on top.” Rounding out the sophomore class is Maribyrnong, Australia native Abbey Trinca. Trinca competed in three events for the Eagles as a freshman, averaging 88.3 shots per round. With more experience and confidence, Lopez expects Trinca to have a much improved sophomore season. “Abbey is really developing into an anchor player for us,” Lopez remarked. “She has a very consistent dependable game; she does not miss fairways. She does much better in tournaments than in qualifying or practice. She is gaining more and more toughness and is going to be a steady part of our lineup going forward. I don’t think she has any idea what she can accomplish, and I am excited to watch her develop.” The Eagles will have one freshman on their roster in Morgan Lopez, who will redshirt the 2015 season. “Morgan is a developing player for us this year,” Lopez said. “She’s had some experience with golf, but it’s been a while because she’s been such a high level competitor in equestrian and volleyball. She has a real interest in being someone that the team can depend on. Morgan has the determination and patience that is needed to be competitive.”

The Schedule

Lopez and the Eagles will compete in eight regular season tournaments during the 2014-15 season. ERAU will open its fall slate Sept. 15-16 at the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational in Jekyll Island, Ga. The Blue and Gold will then compete in Guy Harvey Invitational, Oct. 7-8 in Palm Beach, Fla. before closing out the fall season at the NAIA National Championship Fall Preview (Oct. 2628), which will take place in Pooler, Ga. at the Savannah Quarters Country Club. The Eagles will begin their spring season close to home on Feb. 7 at the Flagler Spring Invitational. ERAU is then set to travel to Lakeland, Fla. one week later to compete in the Florida Southern Spring Invitational. After a month off from competition, the Blue and Gold will return to action March 15-17 when it hosts the 26th Annual Eagle Invitational at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. After traveling to Ocala, Fla., March 23-25 for the Morehead State Spring Fling, the Eagles will close out the regular season at home from April 1012 when they host the Bash at the Beach. The Blue and Gold will look to capture its first conference title since 2010 when the team travels to the Fountains Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. for the Sun Conference Championships, scheduled from April 1519. The winner receives an automatic bid to the 2015 NAIA National Championships in Savannah, Ga.

2014-15 MEN’S SEASON OUTLOOK The 2014-15 season marks the fifth for Embry-Riddle men’s golf head coach Ken Staton and the program’s 27th and final year of competition in the NAIA. The Eagles have continually improved during Staton’s tenure, with last year’s team finding their way into the record books once again, posting the second lowest season stroke average in program history with a 301.5, nearly breaking the 2012-13 team’s record of 301.4. For the second consecutive season, the Eagles will have The Sun Conference’s host bid to the NAIA National Championships, which will be held in Daytona Beach, Fla. at LPGA International. The Blue and Gold finished 16th out of 29 teams at last season’s national tournament, its best finish in school history. With added depth to this year’s roster, Staton has even higher expectations for his squad in 2014-15 “Our team is deep with multiple players having the ability to make the traveling squad,” Staton remarked. “Having a deep team this year will help our players go for lower scores and free up their games knowing that everyone has the ability to shoot low. That is the element that our program has been missing over the last few years, to have one or two players under par. In order to compete for a national title we must have that ability.”

marked. “With some of the lowest scoring averages he has been one of the best players to have ever played at Embry-Riddle.” The men’s team will also rely heavily on its junior class this season, which is led by Alejandro Lozano. Last season, Lozano competed in 11 of the team’s 12 events, recording a season stroke average of 76.3. The Bogota, Colombia native recorded two top-20 finishes and one top-10 finish. “Alejandro is one of our programs most explosive players with talent and natural ability,” Staton remarked. “He is starting to learn how to score and has become consistent with his play, maintaining his rounds when his play is not his best.”

The Players

The Eagles’ only departure from last year’s team is former team captain Sneh Patel. Patel, who will serve as an assistant coach for ERAU this season, was one of the squad’s top performers last season, averaging 75.4 strokes per round with one top-20 finish. Seniors Henrik Petersson and Jonathan Kopsell will be looked upon as the team leaders for the 2014-15 season. Petersson was the Eagles’ top finisher at four of the nine events he participated in last season, recording two top 20 overall finishes in the process. The 201314 season was a career year for Petersson as he fired the lowest 36-hole total (147), 54-hole total (219), and single round score (71) of his college career. “Henrik is a senior leader of the team and I look for him to have his best season,” said Staton. “His game always comes on strong in the spring which will be a key for our success.”

ERAU Senior Henrik Petersson Kopsell has consistently been one of the Eagles’ top performers during his first three years at ERAU. The Land O’ Lakes, Fla. native led the Blue and Gold with five top-20 finishes last season, including two top-ten finishes and one top-five finish. Kopsell recorded the fifth-best season stroke average (74.8) in school history during the 2013-14 season, while also tying the lowest 54-total in program history when he carded a five- under 211 at the Southeastern Fall Invitational (Oct. 27-29) “Jon has set records at Embry-Riddle,” Staton re-

ERAU Junior Alejandro Lozano Thomas Garnier competed in seven events for the Blue and Gold as a sophomore, shooting a low round of 74 in the final round of the Bash at the Beach (April 8) with a season stroke average of 78.0. The junior will be expected to have a much larger impact on the team this year. “His game has improved,” Staton said of Garnier. “He is stronger physically and has learned to manage his game better. Right now he is the most improved player on the team.” Rounding out the junior is class Kyle Morgan who competed in four events last season, recording a stroke average of 82.2. “Working hard as Kyle does all the time, I look for him to be a factor in the top five players this year,” said Staton. “Finding a new way to play mentally, the offseason was a learning experience for him. Hopefully, he will be able to unleash his game as the season goes on.” The Eagles’ sophomore class includes Patrick Byrne and Brent Graham. Byrne had an excellent freshman campaign as he recorded three top-20 finishes. Byrne was the team’s top finisher at two events, including The Sun Conference Championships where he tied with Kopsell for 14th place. “Patrick is a gamer,” said Staton. “He makes things work and gets the ball in the hole. Tightening up his swing is his main goal for this season. He has done some good work this offseason and I see him competing in all of our tournaments.” Graham competed in six events as a freshman, averaging 79.4 shots per round. Graham was the team’s top finisher at the Bash at the Beach, shooting a career low 70 in the first round. “Brent has become an intense competitor with better focus on the course,” Staton stated. “ He is a naturally gifted putter and when he has confidence he has shown he can shoot under par and become the player we need

to help us win tournaments.” The Eagles 2014-15 roster also features four newcomers. Tyler Green, a freshman, joins the Eagles from Port Orange, Fla., where he played at Spruce Creek High School. Green was named the 2013 Daytona Beach News-Journal All-Area Boys Golfer of the Year as a senior. “With Tyler, it’s all about confidence,” Staton commented. “He is one of the most gifted and complete players I have seen here at Embry-Riddle. When he gains more playing experience he will set records.” Adam LaGrange is another highly touted freshman who compete for the Blue and Gold this season. LaGrange is from Terre Haute, Ind. and is a graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School. LaGrange was tabbed the 2013 Indiana Golf Association Boys Player of the Year after his final high school season. “Adam has gone through some changes with his swing and as he makes the adjustments his scores will get lower throughout the season,” Staton said. “He is the best decision maker on the team which allows him to get the most out of his game.” Colt Hankamer will also compete for the Eagles during the team’s 2014-15 campaign. Hankamer is a former baseball player at Embry-Riddle who played two seasons for the Eagles as an infielder. “Colt has showed me tremendous talent as he walked on this year,” Staton said. “Colt is a team player and I hope to see him give some leadership to our program this season.” Rounding out the Eagles’ roster is Seth Courtney. Courtney previously played at Warner University and Mississippi College before serving four years in the United States Navy. “Seth has drive,” said Staton. “He is redshirting this year which will allow him some time to work on his game. He didn’t have much time to play golf when he was in the Navy so with more experience I look for him to contribute next season.”

The Schedule

Staton and the Eagle men will compete in nine regular season tournaments during the 2014-15 season. The Blue and Gold will kick off the fall season on Sept. 21 at the Webber Fall Invitational at the Lake Wales Country Club. The Eagles will then host the NAIA National Championship Fall Preview at LPGA International in Daytona Beach in October before heading to Miami to compete in the Dave Adamonis, Sr. Invitational hosted by Johnson & Wales. ERAU will close out the fall with a dual meet against NCAA I Stetson University. The spring season will begin on Feb. 1 as the Eagles travel to Cocoa, Fla. for the Titan Winter Invitational hosted by Eastern Florida State College. The Blue and Gold will close out the month of February with a busy schedule competing in both the Florida Tech Panther Invitational and Gary Freeman Spring Invitational during the week of Feb. 22. The men’s team will finish up its regular season with two home meets. The Eagles will host the Eagle Invitational at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, March 15-17 followed by the Bash at the Beach, April 10-12. ERAU will look to capture the program’s first Sun Conference title since 1997 when the team competes in The Sun Conference Championships from April 26-29. The winner of the event receives an automatic bid to the 2015 NAIA National Championships in Daytona Beach from May 19-22.

ences, as both a collegiate golfer and a touring professional. Lopez pioneered the women’s golf program at ERAU in 2000 and is in her 15th season of coaching the Eagle women. During her tenure, the Embry-Riddle women’s golf team has accrued seven regional championships, 19 tournament titles and has earned 13 national championship appearances in a row. As individuals, there have been four regional medalists, 19 individual titles, 18 All-Americans, 25 Honorable Mention All-Americans, 20 National Championship All-Tournament team members, 43 All-Sun Conference team members, 20 All-Region XIV team members, six Conference/Region Players of the Year, 28 Academic NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athletes and 17 Academic All-Conference recipients. The women’s golf squad was the inaugural NAIA Buffalo Funds Champions of Character Team in 2006 and recognized as an NAIA Scholar Team four times. In 2003, Lopez assumed the head coach position of the men’s golf program. From 2003-10 Lopez coached the men’s team to four team titles, two National Championship appearances, a conference championship runner-up team finish and 12 top-three finishes. In addition Lopez’s student-athletes garnered individual honors, including three individual titles, one All-America honor, one Sun-Conference Player of the Year, four All-Sun Conference team members, two All-Region XIV team members, one conference A.O. Duer Award nominee, 13 Academic All-Americans and 12 Academic All-Conference recipients. The men’s golf squad was also recognized as an NAIA Scholar Team in 2010. Lopez’s teams have not just proven themselves on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During her coaching tenure, the men’s and women’s golf teams have placed at least one player on the Conference All-Academic list every year. In 2009, the women’s golf team posted a 3.7 GPA, the highest of ERAU’s 16 athletics programs for the third year in a row. Lopez also served as the director of the EmbryRiddle Braddock Education Success Team (BEST Program) from 2001-05, overseeing and implementing the department’s academic enhancement program. Lopez was named the 2007 Coach of the Year by the the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP), marking the first time a coach from a NAIA institution has been given the award. The LPGA Coach of the Year Award, presented by Etonic, was established in 1980, and is awarded annually to a female golf professional actively engaged in teaching and/or coaching golf at the collegiate or high school level. In 2010-11, Lopez led the women’s golf team to a second-place finish at the NAIA National Tournament in one of the most exciting finishes in NAIA history , tying the 2007-08 team for the best finish for any Embry-Riddle golf team on the national stage. The 2007-08 team’s 3.7 GPA was also the second highest of any athletic team in the entire NAIA. Lopez has also been very active in the NAIA at the national, regional and conference levels. She recently completed her last term as President of the NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches Association and now serves as the women’s golf rater for The Sun Conference. Lopez has also held positions as the regional women’s golf rater and the men’s and women’s regional golf chair. A three-year letter winner at Alabama, Lopez competed for the Crimson Tide from 1989-92. During her tenure at Tuscaloosa, Lopez also won a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier, earning her the right to participate in the 1992 US Women’s Amateur. After

graduation, Lopez made the jump to the professional ranks, beginning with the Futures Tour in 1993. During that time, she also competed on the Asian (1994, 1997), European and Australian Tours (1994). In 1998, she retired from full time competition after a long battle with injuries. Lopez returned to competitive golf in 2000 and occasionally competes in various professional events in order to maintain and sharpen her skills as a player and instructor. Since 1994, Lopez has caddied numerous LPGA and Futures Tour events. Her experience as a player and keen eye for instruction makes caddying and coaching a natural fit. In his third season at the helm, Staton led the Blue and Gold to several marks in the Eagle record book. The team narrowly missed out on winning two tournaments, placing in second at the Webber Invitational and the Bash at the Beach. In 2012-13 the team had the best season stroke average in Eagle history with a 301.4. The Sun Conference is heading into its 25th season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The institutions in the conference believe in strong educational commitment combined with balanced athletic competition. Originally formed in March 1990 as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (FIAC), The Sun Conference was established as a conference for small independent institutions within the NAIA. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league unveiled its new name, “The Sun Conference” on August 18, 2008 to be inclusive of member schools from Georgia and South Carolina. Under the guidance of commissioner Mark Pope, the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and field and women’s volleyball. The Sun Conference has proven to be one of the top leagues in the NAIA with its teams consistently being recognized among the nation’s best. In 2013-14, the conference placed two teams in the top 25 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Race with Embry-Riddle placing fourth and SCAD Savannah finishing in 24th place. Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles and 29 teams made national tournament appearances in 2013-14. SCAD finished as the national runner-up in women’s golf, while Embry-Riddle earned runner-up finishes in both men’s and women’s tennis. In addition to the tennis and golf national runner-up finishes, the league racked up numerous individual national titles. SCAD’s Theresa Schmaus won the ITA/NAIA national singles title while Embyr-Riddle’s Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang won the doubles crown. On the men’s side, ERAU completed the sweep as Deni Zmak took home the national singles title and teamed up with Simon Felix to win the doubles cown. In track and field, Embry-Riddle’s Reta Woodard won both in the indoor weight and outdoor hammer throw national titles. Women’s golf saw SCAD’s Alazne Urizar earn individual medalist honors, while Northwood’s Helen Lynskey was tabbed as the NSCAA/NAIA Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. In 2013-14 alone, 84 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 167 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004, followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson and Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.) within the last four years, along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools. Football begins its first season as a league-sponsored sport in the Fall of 2014 and that sport brings with it two associate members in Edward Waters and Point.

The Eagles will play full SSC schedules in 2015-16 and 2016-17, but will not be eligible for postseason play. As Embry-Riddle continues to move through the NCAA II candidacy process, the Eagles will become full members of the Sunshine State Conference in the summer of 2017.

2013-14 MEN’S SEASON REVIEW

The Embry-Riddle men’s golf team had arguably its best season ever under the instruction of head coach Ken Staton during its 2013-14 campaign. The Eagles earned a bid to the 2014 NAIA National Championships and earned a 16th place finish, the best ever for the men’s team at the national tournament. Throughout the season, the 2013-14 Eagles also recorded numbers that rank among the best in team history. ERAU put up the second-best season stroke average in school history with 301.5. In addition, the team’s 36-hole total of 596 at the 25th Annual Eagle Invitational was tied for eighth-best in ERAU history, and its 886 total at the Southeastern Fire Invitational was the sixth-best 54-hole total in school history.

The Fall

The 2013-14 edition of Embry-Riddle men’s golf kicked off its fall season at the NAIA Fall Preview at the team’s home course, LPGA International. ERAU finished in eighth place out of 13 teams with a three round total of 892 (300-294-298). Two Eagles finished in the top 20: Henrik Petersson finished tied for 12th, carding a 219 (74-72-73), while Jonathan Kopsell tied for 18th with a score of 220 (73-73-74). The Blue and Gold then traveled to Lake Wales, Fla. for the Webber Invitational where the team carded a 904 (305-300-299) to finish in eighth place. ERAU was again led by Petersson, the only Eagle to finish in the top 20, who tied for 17th with a 222 total (74-74-74). Next, the Eagles competed at the Thomas University Invitational where they finished in 13th place. Kopsell recorded the low score for ERAU, shooting a 80-70=150. Embry-Riddle continued its fall schedule at the Johnson & Wales Invitational where the Eagles earned a ninth place finish with a three-round total of 934 (315-318-301). Petersson carded the low score for the team yet again, with a 228 total. The men closed out the fall season at the Southeastern Fire Invitational in Lakeland, Fla. where they shot a 54-hole total of 886 (303-289-294) to earn a seventh place finish. Kopsell tied the school record for lowest 54-hole total with a spectacular 211 (73-69-69) to finish the tournament at five-under par, good enough to tie for fourth place.

The Eagles began the spring season with a sixth place finish out of 13 teams at the Titan Winter Invitational. The team tallied a three-round total of 901 (313-293-295) and was led by Alejandro Lozano who tied for 17th place with a 219 total (75-74-70). Kopsell finished the tournament just four strokes behind Lozano, carding a 78-73-72=223 to tie for 25th place. The real-time visual and auditory feedback keeps students coming back to your facility because they are able to monitor and track their progress over time. K-VEST’s comprehensive solution features include: TPI 3D Software Developed by the Titleist Performance Institute, TPI 3D measures swing efficiency via the kinematic sequence and allows users to compare swing patterns to the world’s top PGA and LPGA players. K-SWING Summary Simple and automated 3D analysis provides user-friendly reporting, comparative PGA/LPGA averages, and one click delivery of real-time training. Video Analysis Allows users to simultaneously capture 3D and video, which can be viewed in single capture or in split screen mode with illustrative drawing tools. Real-Time Feedback Real-time visual and auditory biofeedback can be used to improve every aspect of the golf swing, including set up, backswing, top and impact positions.

Player Testimonies “I use the K-Vest system to confirm what I’m feeling. If I feel my hands are starting first then followed by my hips, K-Vest can confirm it. There’s a sensor on your wrist and one on your back which tracks the motion of the three major components of the swing; your hands and your upper and lower body rotations. The data you receive is unparalleled. The system analyzes every part of your swing, which has allowed me to fine tune my skills and become a better golfer.” – Sneh Patel “I enjoy using the K-Vest system because it gives me a chance to see my swing and mechanics. It puts my swing in perspective and shows me where I can improve. It’s helped improve my swing by showing me little tweaks in my alignment, posture and the turn at the top of my swing. These are three keys that I’ve been adjusting this semester and without K-Vest it wouldn’t be as easy to do on my own.” - Connie Pitenis

History

38

On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to worldclass status.

Academics

Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels, as well as doctoral degrees in five areas of study. At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate assistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through university-wide voice mail and e-mail.

Embry-Riddle was also named to the top tier of universities granting mainly bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Embry-Riddle has three campuses: - traditional, residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and the Worldwide Campus provides educational opportunities to working adults at more than 150 locations in the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada and the Middle East.

Embry-Riddle’s 100,000 plus alumni include six astronauts

The student/faculty ratio at the Daytona Beach campus is 15-to-1 and the average class size is 23.

Embry-Riddle offers 27 undergraduate degree programs administered by the Colleges of Aviation, Arts & Sciences, Business Engineering. ERAU also offers 15 graduate degrees, as well as four doctoral programs. The undergraduate enrollment at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus is 5,245. Of that number, 17 percent are international students representing 98 countries.

DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community. The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March. Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community. Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

3

Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NASCAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona International Speedway is one of the most recognizable racetracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

6

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destinations in the United States. Every year, millions of vacationers flock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

55

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

70.4º 200

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant climate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland.

Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, including barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Italian, Thai, seafood, Cuban, health and natural foods.

CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER respect • Responsibility • Integrity • Sportsmanship • servant Leadership The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affiliated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. The Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative.
