2015 Season Outlook
The Embry-Riddle men’s soccer team has a tough task ahead of it as the Eagles transition to NCAA II and the Sunshine State Conference. The SSC is regarded as the top league for men’s soccer in NCAA II, with Lynn having won the 2014 national championship. It will be a unique situation for Head Coach Dave Gregson as his squad has been a perennial favorite in The Sun Conference for the past decade, but will now take on the role of an underdog. “This is new territory for us as we are transitioning,” Gregson said. “This will probably be the first year since about 1999 the we haven’t entered the season as firm favorites in our league. There’s a different pressure that comes with not being “The Team”. I think we’ve got a good nucleus of guys that will grow together and help this team be ready to compete in this league in 2017. I’m excited to watch that process unfold.”
Goalkeepers
Jeff Bone will serve as the Eagle goalkeeper in 2015 after spending the last two years as the backup to Nils Carlson, who is now the Goalkeeping Coach for Embry-Riddle. “Jeff is beginning his third season now and finally gets to be the starting goalkeeper for us,” Gregson stated. “Jeff has paid his dues and now it’s his time to shine so we’re looking forward to him being a steadfast performer between the posts.” Jeff Bone
Forwards
“Danny played a lot of left back in 2014, but we’ll probably transition him into more of a midfield role this year,” Gregson stated. “He’s got great energy and fitness and I think he’s going to do well in his new position this season.” Eric LaVerne returns for his season year after making six appearances in 2014. “Eric is probably in the best shape of his life, which bodes well for his senior season,” Gregson said. “He’s also our representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and we expect him to show great senior leadership this season.” James Pass played in nine games as a sophomore last year at Flagler. Originally from Hadlow, England, Pass played at the Tombridge Angels Football Academy in 2012, scoring three goals while serving as the team captain. “James likes our style of soccer and he’s very excited to get to play in our system,” Gregson remarked. “I think he and Jason will form a good partnership in the middle of the field.”
Moriba Ballah started 12 games a year ago after transferring to ERAU from Southern Polytechnic State. He scored three goals and had two assists in his first season with the Eagles. “Moriba is back after playing as an outside midfielder for us a year ago,” Gregson stated. “He’s got great athletic ability and we think he can do a good job scoring goals for us this year.”
Midfielders Daniel Gylfason earned Sun Conference honorable mention as a freshman last year after scoring five goals and adding six assists while starting all 15 matches for the Blue and Gold. “Daniel is our returning All-Conference performer in the midfield,” Gregson said. “He gained some valuable experience last year and understands the college game a little bit more, so we’ll be looking for him to be an integral part of most of our attacking movements.” Daniel McClintock made 15 appearances with 12 starts as a true freshman in 2014, playing nearly 1,100 minutes.
Moriba Ballah
Joao Belmonte is a senior transfer who played the last three seasons at Belhaven, an NAIA school in Mississippi. Belmonte appeared in 16 games last year, scoring five goals and adding six assists. “Joao comes in with a great soccer background, “Gregson remarked. “He’s going to be able to help us a lot over the course of the season.” Collin Archer is a true freshman from Tampa, Florida, where he was a four-year starter at Strawberry Crest High School. Archer scored 23 career goals including 15 his senior season at SCHS. “We also have Collin, a young kid from the Tampa area who is a great athlete,” Gregson commented. “He is learning the pace and technique that is required for the college game, but I think he’s going to be a great player for us.”

Daniel Gylfason
Daniel McClintock
Jason Van Achteren is a freshman from Antwerp, Belgium who has experience playing for Belgium’s U-15 National team. “Jason is big, tall and rangy,” Gregson commented. “He’s a good central midfielder with a good engine who’s going to be a massive asset for us.” Ali Amiri is another freshman originally from England. Amiri played for Leeds United’s academy while in the United Kingdom. “Ali comes highly recommended from an academy in England,” Gregson said. “He’s a quick player who’s going to be involved in a lot of our attacking movements. I look forward to seeing him develop over the next few years.” Derek Griesheim and Taylor Stark both return for their sophomore campaigns this season after developing their skills on the training ground as freshmen in 2014. “Derek and Taylor both return with a year of experience under their belts,” Gregson stated. “They each have a great attitude towards training
and wanting to improve every day, so they’ll definitely help us with some minutes throughout the year.” Robert Wojtkun is another returning sophomore who saw limited playing time a year ago. Wojtkun appeared in two games last season, but continued to improve throughout the year. “Robert has matured a lot over the last year,” Gregson remarked. “He’s another one who’s got a great attitude; he’s just great to have around the team. He’ll be getting more minutes this season as well.” Sean Meade is a freshman from nearby DeBary and a 2015 graduate of DeLand High School where he was the team captain his junior and senior seasons. “Once Sean gets acclimated to the pace of the college game he’ll be a great asset for us,” Gregson commented.
Magnus Magnusson
Schedule
Defenders Tobias Gerber and Magnus Magnusson will see a majority of the minutes at center back this season. Both were second team All-Sun Conference selections last year after anchoring a back line that allowed just 1.13 goals per game with four shutouts. “Tobias and Magnus formed a really strong partnership towards the end of last season at central defense,” Gregson commented. “We’re confident that together they can do the same thing again this season.” Birgir Baldursson made 14 appearances as a
Another freshman defender is Pierre Hertin, who comes to ERAU from Orebro, Sweden. Greg son expects him to compete for minutes in his first year at the collegiate level. “Pierre will be joining the mix at the fullback spot this year,” Gregson remarked. “He comes in with a solid background and I think he’ll do very well for us as a left back.” Juan Angulo Reyes is a freshman from Punto Fijo, Venezuela, but played high school soccer at the Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, scoring three goals from the defender position. “Juan is a great student and a great kid,” Gregson commented. “He has a great appetite for the game and he’s improving every day.”
logged over 1,000 minutes on defense last season Hafsteinsson started all 12 matches that he appeared in, scoring two goals, while Lohmeyer appeared in 14 matches with 11 starts as a freshman. “I think we’re particularly strong in the fullback positions as we have Felix and Viktor coming back,” Gregson stated. “They’re both good, smart defenders who have got a solid year of experience together and we’re expecting big things from both of them again in 2015.” Ryan Sitler is a true freshman who scored 28 goals and racked up 20 assists between Seneca High School in Seneca, South Carolina and Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. “We’re very impressed so far with Ryan,” Gregson said. “He’s come here from Montverde Academy with a great pedigree and we’re excited about his potential to develop as a center back for the future.”
The 2015 campaign will feature 13 contests, including seven home games. The season kicks off with two familiar opponents visiting the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium, with Southeastern coming to town on Sept. 8 followed by Thomas on Sept. 12. The Eagles will open up the road as well as the Sunshine State Conference portion of the schedule with games at Barry (Sept. 19) and Nova Southeastern (Sept. 23) before returning home to host Eckerd on Sept. 26. ERAU will travel to Tampa on Oct. 3 to open up the month of October, followed by a home tilt with Florida Tech on Oct. 7. A pair of mid-week road games surround a home date with Saint Leo (Oct. 17), as trips to Florida Southern (Oct. 14) and Palm Beach Atlantic (Oct. 21) wrap up the travel schedule against Sunshine State Conference opponents. The defending national champions will visit Daytona Beach when Lynn travels north to face Embry-Riddle on Oct. 24. Four days later the Blue and Gold will play its final home game of the season against Rollins (Oct. 28). ERAU closes out the 2015 season with its longest road trip in recent memory as the Eagles will travel to the Golden State to face Cal State-San Marcos on Nov. 7.

A nationwide search produced England native, David Gregson, a young coach looking for his first head coaching opportunity. Now in his 22nd season with the Blue and Gold, Gregson continues to show the administration that they made the right choice. As a young man growing up in England and through his collegiate years as a student-athlete, Gregson enjoyed a fair amount of success in the game of soccer. He has since translated his success as a player into success in the coaching realm as he has become one of the most respected soccer coaches in the country. Gregson garnered one of the highest coaching honors in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in 2011-12 when he was selected as the NAIA Coach of Character Award Winner. The Coach of Character Award is given annually to an NAIA head coach who has been outstanding in embracing the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative (integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership), using methods of teaching character through sport, and in community leadership through volunteering or service. In 2003, Gregson celebrated his 10th anniversary as a head coach by achieving his 100th career victory and guided the Eagles to the national tournament quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Eagles ended the 2003 season ranked No. 8 nationally and set new program single-season marks for overall wins (18), overall winning percentage (.880) and conference winning percentage (.950). In addition, the 2003 team was the recipient of the inaugural Nels Dahlquist Memorial Sportsmanship Award for displaying the best sportsmanship at the national tournament. In 2007, the Eagles returned to the NAIA National quarterfinals, winning the Florida Sun Conference regular season and Region XIV titles on the way. Two seasons later, Gregson’s squad matched its best performance on the national stage, winning The Sun Conference regular season and tournament titles en route to the NAIA National Tournament quarterfinals. Prior to Gregson’s arrival at Embry-Riddle, the men’s soccer program enjoyed only one winning season in five years. Under Gregson’s watchful eye, the Eagles have gone 235-126-30 overall with a 132-51-8 record in league play, have garnered six conference regular season titles, two conference tournament titles, five NAIA Region XIV championships and made seven NAIA national tournament appearances. His achievements have not gone unnoticed as Gregson has been recognized as the Conference Coach of the year seven times and has been named NAIA Regional Coach of the Year on five occasions. During his tenure, Gregson has produced 22 All-Americans, 34 honorable mention All-Americans, eight conference and seven Region XIV Player of the Year picks, 41 All-Region and 113 All-Conference honorees. Gregson has also made academic success a priority among his student-athletes as evidenced by the fact that ERAU men’s soccer has consistently posted a team grade point average above a 3.0. The 2006 squad achieved a No. 1 ranking in the NAIA and was recognized as a College Team Academic Award Winner by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Not only did the Eagles’ team grade point average of 3.53 meet the minimum qualification requirements for the award for the fourth year in a row, they also posted the highest team GPA of any men’s soccer program at any level in the country, including NCAA I, NCAA II, NCAA III and the NAIA. The 2005 squad carried a 3.10 team GPA and was one of only four in the nation at any level to post top-ten finishes in both athletics and academics. Over the last 22 years, the Eagles have had 34 NAIA All-America Scholar Athletes, three Academic All-Americans and 12 Academic All-District selections as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and 58 Academic All-Conference honorees. After playing for Lancashire and England Schoolboys at the U-19 level, Gregson came to the United States to continue his soccer career in 1987 and accepted a full scholarship to perennial NCAA Division I power, Hartwick College. Under the tutelage of one of the finest soccer instructors in the country, Jim Lennox, Gregson distinguished himself among the Hartwick elite, becoming the team’s first three-year captain and two-time MVP. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Management and French at Hartwick, Gregson moved onto the University of Scranton (Pa.) where he completed his Master of Science degree in Secondary Education and began his coaching journey. He was an assistant coach to both the men’s and women’s programs, helping them both to backto-back national tournament berths.

Assistant Coach | 10th Season | Embry-Riddle (2002)
Education
Bachelors in Business Administration Embry-Riddle, 2002 Masters in Business Administrtation Webber International, 2004
Playing Experience Embry-Riddle (1997-01)
Coaching Experience Head Coach Webber International (2004-07) Assistant Coach Embry-Riddle (2002-03, 2008-Present)
John Haworth returned to the Embry-Riddle men’s soccer coaching staff in the summer of 2008 after spending four seasons as the head coach at ERAU’s Sun Conference foe Webber International. In his four seasons at the helm of the Webber International program, Haworth guided the Warriors to two top three finishes in the FSC and a Final Four appearance at the NAIA National Tournament in 2006. Named the league’s Coach of the Year in 2007, Haworth’s record as a head coach stands at 40-30-1, including a program best 14-5 mark in 2006. Haworth began his playing career at Embry-Riddle in 1997, when he joined the squad as a goalkeeper. During his freshman year he started in 16 games as the Eagles’ net minder and allowed only 28 goals on the season. His 1.82 goals against average that season ranked him second on the Eagles’ single season list in that category. John’s prowess between the posts was not the only asset to the team, however, as he was asked to make the transition from guarding the nets to joining the attack. In his debut as a forward, he scored hat trick against Covenant College, thus solidifying his spot on the roster as a field player. His sophomore campaign was a success, but remainder of his career was blighted by a series of injuries. Haworth was forced to sit out the 1999 season to recover from a knee injury and was still plagued by that injury the following year. His senior campaign looked promising as he returned fitter and more determined than ever. But his hopes were dashed when, in his first appearance of the season, he sustained a broken leg, which sidelined him for the remainder of the year. While his playing time was limited, Haworth’s dedication to the program and support of his teammates never waned. It is this enthusiasm that makes him an asset to the coaching staff. He brings a wealth of knowledge of the inner workings of the program to the table as well as a strong rapport with squad members. Haworth earned his Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2009 and is also an NSCAA Associate Staff Coach. He graduated from Embry-Riddle in Spring 2002 with a degree in Communications and a minor in Business, and completed his master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sport Management at Webber International in 2004. Haworth and wife Amy reside in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Nils Carlson
Goalkeeping Coach | 1st Season | Embry-Riddle (2015)
Education
Bachelors in Aerospace Engineering Embry-Riddle, 2015
Playing Experience Embry-Riddle (2010-14)
Former Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Nils Carlson will be serving as the goalkeeping coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs in 2015. Carlson played four years for the ERAU men’s soccer team and was the Eagles’ starting goalkeeper in each of his four seasons wearing the Blue and Gold. He helped the Eagles to conference regular season titles in 2011 and 2013, and an NAIA National Championship appearance in 2013. Originally from Vastra, Sweden, Carlson closed out his ERAU career as one of the Eagles’ top five goalkeepers of all time in four categories, including shutouts (1st, 25), minutes played (2nd, 6,461), saves (3rd, 302) and goals against average (5th, 1.11). Carlson was recognized for his accomplishments both on and off the field. A two-time first team All-Sun Conference selection, he was tabbed as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman and garnered honorable mention All-America honors that same year. As a senior, he was named to the Academic All-Conference roster and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.

History
On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.
