EAGLE ATHLETICS

2013 season outlook

As a first-year program, the Embry-Riddle softball team is focused on building the foundation of a winner, beginning with the 2013 season. Head Coach Sarah Lockett has brought in a group of student-athletes that are intent on winning right away and the goals and expectations for the first season reflect that. “Being a first-year program, we’ve spent a lot of time working on building our team culture; getting the girls working together and getting to know each other on an athletic as well as a personal level,” Lockett said. “We’ve talked a lot to our girls about our team’s strength being each other, meaning that it’s going to be very important for everyone to be pulling in the same direction at the same time.” Lockett has scheduled a number of nationally ranked programs, including Flagler, a 2012 NCAA II National Championship participant that finished eighth in the Division II polls a year ago, and NAIA National Championship participants Auburn Montgomery and William Carey. Auburn Montgomery ended 2012 ranked seventh in the national poll, while William Carey was the No. 8 team in the final rankings. “If we want to be a program that competes for a national championship, we need to play the top teams so that our girls can see what those teams look like and so that we can determine if we can compete at that level,” Lockett stated. The difficult schedule extended beyond the regular season, with the Eagles taking on a number of NCAA I schools in exhibition games and scrimmages during the fall season. The most notable contest came on Oct. 13 when the Blue and Gold welcomed the Seminoles of Florida State to the Embry-Riddle Softball Stadium for the first fall contest in ERAU history. “We opened up our fall season against Florida State for two reasons,” Lockett said. “First, it’s a large in-state program that helped draw a lot of atten-

13softballMG.indd 2

tion, and second, they possess an enormous level of athleticism and speed. I wanted our players to see that, to see the speed of the hitters and the pitching, because I wanted them to get the idea into their head that they are going to be that type of team in the NAIA.” Even though the Eagles are yet to play an official game together, Lockett believes that Embry-Riddle will be able to compete with the best in the nation this season. “We’re going to need to learn to play at a very high level very quickly,” Lockett stated. “But I’m very excited about that because I feel that we’ve got the tools to do it. I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen from our girls in the fall and I feel that we will continue to improve throughout the season.” One of the tools that Lockett speaks about often is the athleticism that the Eagles possess, noting the team’s strong defense and hitting, as well as aboveaverage speed. In terms of the roster makeup, Lockett notes the biggest issue for the Eagles lies in the team’s depth. “Our only weakness is if we have injuries going down the road,” she said. “But that could be said for just about any team.” The Eagles will carry three pitchers on the roster, with Alexis Estrada and Robi Zimmerman expected to be the primary starters and Melanie Lee serving as a reliever and spot starter. “Alexis will be asked to eat a lot innings for us,” Lockett said. “She has an excellent demeanor that really sets the tone for the rest of the girls when she’s out there.” Estrada played two years at San Jacinto College where she earned All-Conference and All-Region honors after recording a 17-4 mark with a 1.55 ERA and 131 strikeouts as a sophomore. Lee was a two-time All-County Pitcher at Crystal River High School where she posted a career 32-13 record with a 1.42 ERA. Dee Espinosa will see a majority of the time behind the plate, with Savannah Smith sharing the catching duties. Lockett has been impressed with Espinosa as an all-around player, stating, “Dee is a tremendous athlete. She can hit, throw and run, and her ability as a freshman to call a game from behind the plate has been a pleasant surprise.” At Holmes Braddock High School, Espinosa hit .500 or better all four years including a .604 average with four home runs and 25 RBIs as a senior. She was also named to the All-Dade County team all four years and earned All-State Defensive Player of the Year honors last year. Lockett notes that Savannah Smith is a very versatile athlete who will also see time at third base as well as other positions this season. Smith earned AllDistrict honors in 2010 while playing at Spring High School.

EAGLE ATHLETICS

2013 season outlook

Alex Wood and Sarah Huey are expected to be the starting middle infielders and are projected to hit at the top of the lineup. Wood, who is a junior, hit .360 with three home runs and more than 50 RBIs in her freshman season at Waycross College and scored 26 runs as a sophomore. Huey begins her collegiate career with the Eagles after helping Tomball High School to District titles in 2010 and 201. She also led the Cougars to the State semifinals in 2010. The corner infield positions will likely be filled by a combination of Zimmerman, Jessica Osteen and Savannah Smith. Lockett stated, “Robi will be hitting in the middle of the lineup whether she is pitching or playing in the infield because she is one of our best power hitters.” Zimmerman had a successful career at The Seton Keough High School, batting .476 with four home runs and 37 RBIs, while earning an 11-2 record with a 1.42 ERA as a freshman. She was named the Baltimore Sun All-Metro Player of the Year and the Varsity Sports Network Pitcher of the Year as a senior. “Jessica has shown the ability to play either corner infield position,” Lockett said of Osteen who is a freshman on the ERAU roster. “She hits for power, so we’ll look for her to drive in runs from the middle of the lineup.” Osteen also hit for a high average in high school, recording batting averages of .465, .468, and .667 during her career, which included the highest batting average in Broward County in 2011. In the outfield, the Blue and Gold will be using a variety of players at each of the three positions, including Chanley Burge, Ariel Brayer, Samantha Smith and Jori Walan. Burge hit .300 with three home runs and 20 RBIs last year in

13softballMG.indd 3

her senior season at Loveland High School. Brayer is a junior transfer who hit .260 with four doubles and eight stolen bases last year at San Jacinto College. Lockett said, “Ariel is an outfielder who has a good arm and good range, allowing her to run down most balls.” Samantha Smith, a transfer from Florida Atlantic where she played mostly in the infield. “Samantha has made a great adjustment from being a middle infielder at FAU to primarily playing the outfield here at Embry-Riddle,” Lockett said. “Jori is quite simply a fantastic person who is the definition of the studentperson-player package,” Lockett said of Walan. “She brings a lot of leadership skills from her Air Force ROTC background and is a fantastic athlete who will play predominantly in the outfield.” Walan was the team captain at Marian High School where she played softball until graduating in 2010. Lockett also has a few utility players at her disposal, including Haleigh Lewis, Rae Heuer and Krizzy Menez. “Haleigh is a freshman who has lots of potential,” Lockett said. “She has a good bat and I’m excited to see how she develops over the next four years because she could bcome a real difference-maker for us in time.” Lewis showed that potential last season as a senior at Lake Nona High School, hitting .425 with two home runs and 33 RBIs. Regarding Heuer, Lockett stated, “Rae is an athletic freshman with a good arm and a good bat. She is also excellent academically, carrying the highest GPA on the team in the fall semester.” Heuer helped the Bellaire High School team to the Texas 5A Regional finals in 2011 and was a member of the Texas Peppers 18U Gold team. Menez is the Eagles’ lone senior and a name that is familiar to those who follow the ERAU women’s soccer team. “Krizzy is a good pick-up for us this spring,” Lockett said. “She has incredible speed and a great personality. She will do a lot of pinch running for us and should bring a good deal of leadership and experience from her time playing with one of the NAIA’s best women’s soccer programs.” The Eagles will open the 2013 season with a doubleheader at NCAA II Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. on Feb. 2.

The Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Conference, is heading into its 22nd season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Under the guidance of Commissioner Mark Pope (2011-present), the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and women’s volleyball. Sun Conference teams are perennial contenders for national titles. In 2011-12, 31 teams made national tournament appearances. The Northwood men’s basketball team, the SCAD Savannah women’s golf team and Embry-Riddle’s women’s tennis team each finished as runner-up in their respective national tournaments. Additionally, the league racked up numerous individual national titles as Embry-Riddle’s Chris Freeman and Patrick Besch and Adrian Bayh won the ITA/NAIA National singles and doubles titles respectively, while the Eagles’ Reta Woodard, Nicole Bonk and Crystal Bardge won national titles in track and field.

Individually speaking, student-athletes from The Sun Conference have proven themselves worthy of national recognition year after year. In 2010-11 alone, 68 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 96 TSC athletes were also named DaktronicsNAIA Scholar Athletes. The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern. The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopted in 1992. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson & Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.), along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league membership now stands at 12 schools.

Following an extensive nationwide search Sarah Lockett was appointed as the first-ever head coach of the Embry-Riddle softball program in Aug. 2011. Lockett, who is originally from Perth Australia, brought an impressive resume to EmbryRiddle with coaching experience at the collegiate and international levels. She played at the international level for almost a decade. After competing for the Australian National Squad from 1998-02, she then went on to compete for Great Britain for four years. She played for Great Britain at the 2003 European Championships, the 2006 KFC World Cup of Softball and the 2006 Softball World Championships before retiring in 2006. Lockett’s collegiate playing career began at Coastal Carolina University where she was a three-year letterwinner with the Chanticleers from 1999-01. In her final season at CCU, she ranked among the nation’s best in home runs (9th), slugging percentage (14th) and RBI (25th) and was subsequently named the 2001 Big South Conference Most Valuable Player. A two-time South East first team All-Region and Big South first team All-Conference selection, Lockett also excelled in the classroom as she was tabbed as the Big South Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2000 and 2001, and was a Verizon first team Academic All-American in 2001. Her prolific career at Coastal Carolina ended with her being ranked among the Chanticleers’ all-time top five in batting average (.374) home runs (37), doubles (44) and slugging percentage (.679) and earned her a spot in the Coastal Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, where she was inducted in 2006 In 2002, Lockett opted to complete her playing career at Kennesaw State and used her talents to help the Owls advance to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. She started in 57 games, primarily at third base, and hit .406 in the regular season, .353 in the postseason, and totaled 11 homers and 54 RBI on the way to NCAA II first team All-America honors. After wrapping up her career at Kennesaw State in 2002, Lockett stayed on as a graduate assistant coach for two more seasons during which time she helped the Owls to a 99-17 overall record, including a 38-0 win streak in 2004, a Peach Belt Conference Championship, an NCAA Division II Regional title and a trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Lockett’s first full-time coaching opportunity came in the fall of 2004 where she was hired as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina. During Lockett’s four years on the coaching staff, the Chanticleers won the 2006 Big South Conference Tournament Championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Division I Athens regional. The 2006 club set a new single-season program record for home runs with 58, but that mark was eclipsed by the 2007 team that belted out 62 homers. Several student-athletes also garnered individual recognition in the Big South Conference as she helped guide 13 All-Conference selections, 10 All-Tournament team selections, one Conference Tournament MVP, four Academic All-Conference honorees and one conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. In the fall of 2008, Lockett returned to Kennesaw State who was in the process of transitioning from NCAA II to NCAA I. Lockett, who served as the Owls’ chief hitting instructor and worked with infield defense, helped Kennesaw State to their first-ever appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. In her three seasons as an assistant coach, six players earned All-Atlantic Sun recognition, five were named to the conference All-Freshman team and two were All-Tournament selections. In the summer of 2011, Lockett was given the opportunity to coach at the highest level of international competition when she was selected to the staff of the Australian National Team. She served as an assistant coach for Team Australia in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Women’s Championship in Vancouver and the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City, both in July. Lockett has been a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association since 2004. She earned an undergraduate degree from Coastal Carolina in Business Administration in 2002 and completed her Masters degree in Conflict Management at Kennesaw State in 2003.

When the time came to hire an assistant coach, Head Coach Sarah Lockett selected one of her former players, Glynn Tolleson, in 2011. Tolleson played collegiate softball at Coastal Carolina under Coach Lockett in 2006-07. Tolleson has coached the Texas Peppers travel ball team in Houston, Texas for the past three years. The Peppers compete in the highest level of ASA Softball and are regarded as one of the premier travel ball organizations in the state of Texas, holding a 100% recruitment rate for high school athletes at the collegiate level. Tolleson has also worked as a self-employed private softball instructor since 2007. Tolleson has personally helped over 50 high school student-athletes be recruited to all levels of collegiate softball, including top level programs in the SEC, ACC and Big 12. As a player at Coastal Carolina, Tolleson was named to the Big South All-Tournament team in each of her two seasons. Tolleson started 50 games at catcher in

2006, hitting .273 in conference play and ranking second in the Big South Conference with 11 sacrifice bunts. In 2007, Tolleson started 56 games behind the plate, hitting seven home runs and leading the team in sac bunts (12) and walks (25). Prior to transferring to CCU in 2005, Tolleson spent two seasons at Radford University. While at RU, Tolleson started 75 games, earning Big South All-Tournament honors as a freshmen after hitting .273 with five doubles, 15 RBI and 12 stolen bases in the regular season. Tolleson graduated from Coastal Carolina in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a minor in Political Science. Tolleson was named to the Dean’s List and to the Big South Conference President’s Honor Roll four times each; her cumulative GPA was a 3.4. Tolleson was also a member of Upsilon Eta, a charter of Lambda Pi Eta, the Official Honor Society of the National Communication Association (NCA).

Embry-Riddle Head Coach Sarah Lockett didn’t have to look very far to find an assistant coach with experience within the Embry-Riddle Athletics program as she was able to recruit former ERAU baseball player Greg Smith to be part of her coaching staff. Smith played two seasons with the Eagles’ baseball team after transferring from South Florida Community College. His first season wearing the Blue and Gold saw the Clermont, Fla. native earn 48 starts in 55 games in the Eagles outfield. He had a .301 (50-166) batting average and finished among the Eagles’ top five in stolen bases (2nd, 25) and runs scored (4th, 47) to go with 36 walks and 20 RBI. His

senior campaign saw Smith earn first team All-Sun Conference honors after hitting .347 (68-196) with 10 doubles, three triples, 44 walks, 29 stolen bases and 29 RBI. Although he is still a student, currently working toward a bachelors degree in Homeland Security, Smith is no stranger to the coaching ranks as he currently coaches the Ormond Beach Golden Spikes 15 and under club team. He is further involved in the community as a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club and following his graduation in May 2013, he will be playing professional baseball for the Lake Erie Crushers.

Nicole Mosley joined the Eagle family in the Fall of 2006 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. Mosley became a certified athletic trainer in January of 2003 and has spent time working with the Virginia Beach Mariners professional soccer team for two seasons, as well as the Temple football team and an Arena Football team, the Philadelphia Soul.

Mosley received a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from East Carolina University in 2002 and a Master of Education in Kinesiology in 2006.

Coach’s Comments: “Alex has tremendous footspeed; she’s the second-fastest player on our team. We will look for her to show her range in the middle infield and possibly see some time in the outfield. She will generate a lot of run scoring with her speed and ability to put the ball in play, so she will be hitting towards the top of the lineup when she’s starting.” At Waycross College: Played two seasons for the Swamp Foxes…hit .360 with three home runs and more than 50 RBI as a freshman….played in 40 games, batting .260 with three doubles and 26 runs scored as a sophomore.

Coach’s Comments: “Chanley is very athletic and has a fantastic personality. I love what she brings to the team character-wise; she always has a smile on her face. She reads the ball well from the outfield, so she will see most of her playing time there.”

DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community. The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March. Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community. Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

13softballMG.indd 17

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest and most prestigious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The curriculum covers the operation, engineering and research of modern aircraft, alternative vehicles and clean energy systems and the management of aviation and aerospace organizations. Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework. Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations. The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cultural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.

History

On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to worldclass status.

Academics

Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels. At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate assistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through university-wide voice mail and e-mail.

Housing

Embry-Riddle’s on-campus housing is an integral part of the university experience. It gives students the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and to appreciate the unique values that everyone brings to this diverse institution. Students can choose from eight housing styles ranging from suites to efficiency apartments to traditional residence hall designs. All campus student rooms have telephone service, Internet access and satellite TV connection. Lounges, study and meeting rooms, game rooms and other common areas are available to all. The housing facilities are enhanced by four campus dining locations, a fitness center and recreational facilities.

STEVE RIDDER, Director of Athletics Steve Ridder has been at the helm of the Embry-Riddle athletic program since the 1993-94 season, overseeing major changes in the department. During his tenure, Ridder has positioned EmbryRiddle among the elite athletic programs in the nation. The University has increased its number of varsity sports offered from five in 1994, to its current level of 17, and the athletic department staff has grown from five full-time staff members in 1993 to 41 today. The 2009-10 season marked one of the most successful campaigns in Embry-Riddle Athletics history. ERAU Athletics has consistently been one of the best programs in The Sun Conference and in the NAIA and 2009-10 was no different as the Eagles captured conference regular season titles in 12 of their 13 sports programs and competed in 13 national tournament events. In 2010-11, the Eagles’ collective successes on the national stage resulted in a program-best second place finish in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings and their unprecedented dominance in league competition afforded the Blue and Gold its 12th consecutive Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup title. 2011-12 proved to be another banner year for the Embry-Riddle athletic program with the Eagles capturing their 13th straigh Sun Conference Commisioner’s Cup, finishing third in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup race and sending 11 teams to their respective national tournaments. Aside from the Blue and Gold’s success on the playing field, Ridder may be most proud of what the student-athletes have been able to achieve in the classroom during his tenure. The entire athletic program combined for a 3.043 grade point average last year, which is higher than the general student body at Embry-Riddle for the 12th-straight year. In addition, more than 250 student-athletes have garnered Academic AllConference accolades, over 100 have been recognized as Daktronics/NAIA Scholar-Athletes and over 10 have received

the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America award. Ridder has also received personal honors for leading the ERAU athletic program. He received the highest NAIA honor of Athletics Director of the Year for 2005-06 and was recognized at the 66th Annual NAIA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. He has also been named the NACDA-NAIA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year three times, with the most recent honor being bestowed in June 2007, and has been honored as “Athletic Administrator of the Year” by The Sun Conference on eight occasions (1994, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). The awards he has received are synonymous with Ridder’s

was established, while women’s golf, men’s cross country and women’s cross country followed in 2000. Varsity sport opportunities were increased to 16 with the addition of men’s and women’s track in 2004-05 and will move to 17 when softball begins competition in 2012-12. Ridder believes in giving his coaches and staff top-level facilities to achieve success and he has certainly worked hard to make Embry-Riddle’s facilities among the best in the nation, primarily through his successful campaigning. Under his watchful eye, Eagle Athletics has gone from playing and practicing at various venues in the local community to finding a home on campus with state-of-the-art facilities, which include the ICI Center for volleyball and basketball, the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium, the Ambassador E. William Crotty Tennis Complex, the Sliwa Stadium for baseball, and the Embry-Riddle Track & Field Complex. Ridder’s guidance and leadership has attracted tremendous respect within the NAIA and this admiration has allowed Embry-Riddle to host eight national championships including men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s soccer. Ridder is in his 22nd year as head basketball coach for Embry-Riddle and has led the Eagles to the NAIA National Tournament 11 times, with eight Sun Conference regular-season championships, as well as eight conference tournament titles. In 2000, Ridder’s squad captured the school’s first national championship. In addition to his duties at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has become one of Central Florida’s most accomplished sports broadcasters. He has served as the voice of Embry-Riddle basketball for the last 14 seasons and has also served in the same capacity for the Eagles baseball team since 1999. Phillips spent five years as the PA announcer and radio voice of DeLand High School football and currently works for WNDB-1150 AM in Daytona Beach, broadcasting Volusia County high school football. Phillips has also worked for a number of local radio stations WSBB (New Smyrna Beach), WNDA (DeLand) and WELE (Ormond Beach) and was selected to broadcast the 1A and 6A Florida state championship football games from the Citrus Bowl in 2009. He has also done broadcast work for Bethune-Cookman, Georgia Southern, Lewis-Clark State, MidAmerica Nazarene and the Daytona Cubs. Phillips and his wife Ann, who serves as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida, are parents of 11-year-old twins – Lauren and Zachary and eight-year-old daughter Rachel. THE B.E.S.T. PROGRAM The Braddock Education Success Team (BEST) Program was incorporated into the Embry-Riddle Athletic Program during the 1999-00 academic year. The BEST Program is a branch of the Braddock Foundation, which was established by Robert & Lois Braddock. It is currently sponsored by their daughter and Spruce Creek Flyin resident, Cherie Keemar, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael. The BEST program offers tutoring and mentoring programs to assist studentathletes in managing their time between academics, athletics and social development. One of the fundamental components of the BEST Program is Study Hall, which is for student-athletes who are required to attend according to stipulations set by each respective team’s coaching staff. Study Hall is a place where tutors and mentors are available for student-athletes throughout the academic year. With its clearly defined criteria and rules of conduct, Study Hall strives to provide a struc-

tured environment that will benefit student-athletes by improving study habits, honing focus and providing one-on-one learning opportunities. It is not intended to be a substitute for regular class attendance and routine study, but is designed as an essential tool to help student-athletes achieve their academic objectives. Dave Therneau serves as the Academic Enhancement Coordinator of the BEST Program. He and other BEST Program staff members oversee the daily operations of the Academic Advancement Center where all students, including athletes, can go and receive tutoring in many of the courses and subjects that are part of the curriculum at Embry-Riddle. Embry-Riddle is in the process of constructing a new College of Arts & Sciences building. In it will house a 9,000 square foot facility dedicated to the University’s Academic Achievement Center, which includes the BEST Program.

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. With its major emphasis on education and character development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the 1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a term-by-term basis. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport.

NAIA Quick Facts

In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. Under the guidance of Assistant Athletic Director John Mark Adkison, who serves as ERAU’s Champions of Character liaison, the Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in studentathletes the very values addressed by the movement. Embry-Riddle’s intercollegiate teams participate in Champions of Character events throughout the school year, including: • Elementary school reading programs • Habitat for Humanity • Food Brings Hope • Beach clean-up • Children’s Home Society Christmas Drive • Embry-Riddle Housing move-in • Serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless In addition to these events, the department instituted a Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) that assists in the planning of Champions of Character events within the community.
