2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK
After a successful inaugural season in 2014-15 that saw the Embry-Riddle women’s basketball team post 17 wins and earn a bid to The Sun Conference Tournament, Head Coach Lisa Nuxol-Wilson and her staff have a new set of challenges going into the 2015-16 campaign. While the affiliation has changed from NAIA to NCAA II and the conference the Eagles are a part of is now the Sunshine State Conference, the goals and ideals are much the same as they were a year ago.
in the women’s game and the Eagles have plenty of options at that position this year. Five of ERAU’s guards are returners from last season, while the Blue and Gold have a pair of freshman guards who will likely see significant minutes as well. Last season, Sabrina Whiting led the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game, while also grabbing 5.2 rebounds and dishing out three assists per outing. She was named The Sun Conference Freshman of the Year and was a second team All-Sun Conference selection while also earning a spot on the league’s All-Defensive team. “Sabrina is getting better every day,” Nuxol-Wilson stated. “She competes hard in practice against our other guards and that competition is helping to make her a better overall player. She’s a gamer and one of those kids who hates to lose. As a coach, you love having players like that on the floor every day.” One of just two seniors on the team, Kalah Martin’s leadership abilities are going to be a

“This year we are continuing the work that we began last season,” Nuxol-Wilson said. “We are still in the process of building this program and so our goals are going to be different from every other team that we play this season. This conference is extremely talented from top to bottom, and as a coach that excites me. We’re going to be challenged every night we step on the floor and I think that’s going to help us improve as the year goes on. We’re continuing to build a championship-level program and are working toward being a competitive team when we are eligible to compete in postseason play in 2017-18.” Nuxol-Wilson has brought in five new players while losing just two from last year’s squad, giving her a total of 15 athletes on the roster. Among them are four centers, three forwards and eight guards.

key to the team’s success this year. Martin averaged 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and a teamhigh 3.1 assists last season. “Kalah has really stepped up for us,” Nuxol-Wilson stated. “We’ve asked her to be a defensive leader and she has responded in a big way. We look for her to step up her defensive game and really be a lock-down defender every night.” Sophomore Ashley McWilliams averaged 6.9 points per game last season playing point guard for the Eagles last season, but she will called upon to take on more of a shooting guard role this year. The sophomore duo of Hannah Carine and Ashle Muse are strong guards who rebound the ball well and bring a lot of versatility to the lineup. Carine shot 45.5% from the field and

Muse was one of only six players to appear in all 29 contests. Lauren Ellenberger and Sigrid Sandstrom join the squad as freshmen who are each expected to make a significant impact on the program right away. Ellenberger comes to ERAU from South Bend, Indiana, and will likely see plenty of time at the point. She possesses a great ability to run the offense and serve as a floor general and according to Nuxol-Wilson, she is a player with a great motor who will out-hustle almost anyone. Sandstrom is a native of Uppsala, Sweden and has emerged as one of the team’s best spot-up shooters from the outside. She also has a solid skill set that allows her to play at any of the guard positions. Rachel Briere Tara Fields Mercedes Jorge Jessica Savage

Embry-Riddle lists four forwards on its roster, two of whom are incoming freshmen. Mercedes Jorge has the size and strength of a forward but plays like a guard for the Eagles. Her 8.5 rebounds per game led the team a year ago and she poured in 12.9 points per game, earning her a first team All-Sun Conference selection. As one of just four upperclassmen on the roster, Jorge will be asked to be one of the team’s leaders both on and off the court. “Mercedes is one of those ‘do whatever you need’ players,” Nuxol-Wilson remarked. “She’s a good shooter, can drive to the basket, rebounds the ball and defends well. We expect her to have another solid season for us.” Tara Fields represents the other returner at

Last year, Taylor Cyphers was the team’s only true center, as Allison Abbott saw most of her playing time at the four spot. Now, with Abbott sliding over to be more of a post player, and with the additions of Coleen Thomas, a redshirt from last season, and Laniere Coleman, the Eagles have a good bit of depth down low. Cyphers earned second team All-Conference honors last year after averaging 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. At 6-3, Cyphers is the tallest player on the ros-

the position, having played 14.1 minutes per game last season. Fields scored 4.1 points and pulled down 3.6 rebounds per game, and Nuxol-Wilson is expecting her to have a bigger impact in 2015-16. “Tara has gotten a lot stronger in the offseason, and as a result her defensive skills have greatly improved,” Nuxol-Wilson commented. “She’s poised to have a breakout season this year.” Jessica Savage hails from Brighton, Michigan, where she attended Brighton High School, the same school as ERAU Assistant Coach Shannon Murphy. Savage has the potential to serve as a swing player who can play multiple positions and defend almost anyone on the floor. Rachel Briere is from Tampa and averaged 10+ points per game all four years at Steinbrenner High School. At 6-0, Briere is one of the tallest players on the roster, and her versatility and ability to pass the ball will be a valuable addition to ERAU’s depth at the forward position.
Lisa Nuxol-Wilson is back for her second season as the Eagles’ head coach
ter and her shot-blocking presence was very disruptive for most of the Eagles’ opponents in 2014-15 as she led The Sun Conference with a 2.3 blocks-per-game average. “We’re going to look to Taylor to be a leader for us on and off the court,” Nuxol-Wilson said. “She’s a phenomenal shot-blocker and she’s worked a lot on her post game presence, so we expect her to have a big year for us.” Abbott appeared in 28 games last year, shooting 48 percent from the field as a freshman. Now in her sophomore campaign, Abbott has continued to improve her skills as a post player to help provide valuable minutes for the Eagles at the five spot, and Nuxol-Wilson notes that her mid-range game will be a valuable asset offensively for the Eagles. Coleman joins the team as a junior transfer after spending the last two years at Canisius. “We expect Laniere to be an impact player for us in the post, both defensively and offensively. She is an experienced post player who really uses her body and strength well.”

ERAU Athletics in Transition to NCAA II In July 2015, the Embry-Riddle Athletics program was approved to advance to year two of the three-year NCAA Division II membership process. Achieving full NCAA Division II membership typically takes three years, provided the athletic department successfully completes each phase of the membership process. The Eagles will play their first full season of NCAA II competition in 2015-16 as provisional members of the Sunshine State Conference. Per conference rules, the Eagles will not be eligible to participate in any league championship events for the next two seasons and will not be eligible for NCAA II postseason until completion of the membership process. Assuming all expectations have been met in Candidacy Year Two, as well as a year of provisional NCAA II membership, Embry-Riddle will be a full NCAA member in 2017-18.

Head Coach • Second Season • Central Florida (1994)
Lisa Nuxol-Wilson was selected as the first-ever Embry-Riddle Women’s Head Basketball Coach in August 2013. After taking a year to recruit, Nuxol-Wilson put together a lineup that played its inaugural game on Nov. 7, 2014. The first edition of Embry-Riddle women’s basketball made waves in its first season of competition, finishing at 17-12 overall. The Eagles’ 9-9 Sun Conference record put them at fourth in the league’s regular season standings and the Blue and Gold closed out its inaugural campaign in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament. Nuxol-Wilson also guided some of her players to individual accolades in 2014-15, including first team All-Conference selection Mercedes Jorge, second team honoree Taylor Cyphers, and Sabrina Whiting, who was The Sun Conference Freshman of the Year, as well as a second team and All-Defensive Team selection. Nuxol-Wilson came to Embry-Riddle with 17 years of previous experience in women’s basketball coaching, recruiting and program management. Her coaching experience began in 1996 when she was the assistant and junior varsity coach at her alma mater Lake Howell High School. She simultaneously assumed the assistant coaching responsibility at Seminole State College and after a year of dual coaching, she moved exclusively into college coaching, going to Georgia Southern where she was a women’s basketball first assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 1997-01. Her recruiting efforts produced 10 student-athletes who helped the Eagles to two Southern Conference titles and still hold top marks in the GSU record books. Nuxol-Wilson then moved to Stetson as the Lady Hatters’ women’s basketball recruiting coordinator from 2001-02. In just one season at Stetson, she signed seven players, including Joslyn Giles, who was the 2002-03 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year.

In 2002, Nuxol-Wilson was given the opportunity to become the head women’s basketball coach at Seminole Community College, now Seminole State College. As the head coach at a Division I junior college program, Nuxol-Wilson led the women’s basketball team to a combined 59-29 record over her three seasons from 2002-05 and under her guidance, the Raiders were co-conference regular season champions, achieved a No. 9 national ranking and were ranked in the Region 8 top 10 each year. After her first head coaching job, Nuxol-Wilson returned to Division I women’s basketball as an assistant coach for the University of Alabama. At Alabama, Nuxol-Wilson assisted the women’s basketball program in recruiting, game preparation, administrative duties, academic monitoring and individualized position coaching, working with both post players and guards during her tenure. She was also the director of the Alabama camp programs. Throughout her coaching career, Nuxol-Wilson mentored and coached 17 All-Academic team members, 16 All-Conference selections, two All-State honorees, a Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an Arthur Ashe Female Athlete of the Year and a Freshman of the Year. Additionally, five of her student-athletes have gone on to play professionally, including Aneika Henry who played for the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA. After three seasons at Alabama, Nuxol-Wilson became a national evaluator with Blue Star Basketball and in 2010, she started the Blue Star-Florida Basketball program serving as a head coach and program director. With Blue Star, Nuxol-Wilson was tasked with overseeing high school and elite-level women’s basketball, recruiting players, administering program budgets, scheduling tournaments, and managing all public relations. Under her direction, 18 individuals have earned All-State recognition, while 13 have signed NCAA Division I scholarships. Through her role at Blue Star, Nuxol-Wilson has developed a broad network of recruiting contacts in the state of Florida. Nuxol-Wilson began her collegiate playing career at West Virginia Tech where she helped the Golden Bears to a conference regular season title and a perfect 18-0 league record in 1990-91. The following season, the Florida native returned to her home state where she was named the Academic Athlete of the Year at Valencia Community College. .20 14
In their first season of competition, the Embry-Riddle women’s basketball team wrapped up a fourth-place finish in The Sun Conference regular season standings. The Eagles finished at 9-9 in league play and earned the right to host a first-round game in the conference tournament.
Eagles, Fire Make NAIA History
The Embry-Riddle and Southeastern Women’s basketball teams made NAIA history in 2015. It took quintuple overtime to decide the outcome between the two teams, making the Feb. 12 contest the longest game in the history of NAIA women’s basketball. The Eagles and Fire battled it out for nearly three hours before Southeastern emerged with a 96-91 victory.
Eagles Find Success at Home
Playing at the ICI Center proved advantageous for the Embry-Riddle women’s basketball team in 2014-15. The Eagles notched 11 of their 17 wins inside the building’s friendly confines.

History
On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

CHEERLEADERS
Head Coach • Fifth Season • Georgia (2003) Clay Owensby was selected as Embry-Riddle’s head cheerleading coach in Aug. 2011, bringing over 12 years of experience to the Eagle program. He cheered at the University of Georgia for four years and was named team captain in 2001. Upon graduation, he was named the head coach of the fledgling University North Florida squad in 2002 and in four seasons, he built the Ospreys into a National Cheerleading Association competition team. During that same four-year period, Owensby also owned and coached at United Cheerleading. This start-up program also gained prominence in the NCA, capturing two World Championships and seven National Championships. Owensby returned to NCAA Division I cheerlead-
ing in 2006 when he joined the Florida State University program as an assistant coach. In that capacity, he provided expert tumbling and stunting instruction and was responsible for game-day choreography and management. Last season, Owensby guided the ERAU squad to qualification for the 2015 NCA/NDA Collegiate National Championship. The Eagles qualified when their video submission was accepted by the National Cheerleaders Association. A native of Commerce, Ga., Owensby moved to Central Florida in 2005 and put his Masters of Information Systems degree to work as a Systems Engineer for Spirit Cheer. Three years later, he made the move to
Three Stars Media as a Media Systems Engineer in Orlando, and he currently works as an Application Engineer/IT Manager/Systems Adminstrator for Premiums, Promotions and imports in Port Orange. Owensby, who has been a Cheerleading Competition Head Judge and cheerleading music producer for 10 years, got back into cheerleading when he moved to Port Orange in 2010, serving as a tumbling and stunting coach, and choreographer for Power Cheer. Owensby received his Bachelors degree in Biological Engineering from the University of Georgia in 2003 and completed his Masters of Information Systems with the University of Phoenix in 2008. He and his wife Ann reside in Daytona Beach with their son, Noah.
The cheerleading program serves a vital role in building spirit at Eagle basketball and volleyball games, and numerous athletic special events. The cheerleaders’ primary purpose is to interact with the crowd and generate enthusiasm and spirit for the Eagles. In addition to their role at various ERAU sporting events, the Eagle cheerleaders also serve as ambassadors for the Athletic program at fundraising and charitable events. The cheerleaders have won their share of awards, the most notable being a national title at the 1999-00 American Open Championships in Tampa, Fla. They took fourth place at the 2004 American Open Spring Championships, while the Eagle mascot captured third place at the 2004 NCA Spring Nationals. In 2007-08, the cheerleading squad won its first state title at the Florida State Cheer and Dance Championship hosted by the American Open Championships. The Eagles competed at Coed Level 6, the highest level the program has ever achieved. In 2013 the Eagles returned to competition after a five-year hiatus and finished first in their division at the 2013 Tallahassee Diamond Championship. In the spring of 2015, Embry-Riddle competed at the NCA/NDA Collegiate National Championship.

EMBRY-RIDDLE PEP BAND
Now in its 18th year, the Pep Band has played a tremendous role in creating and maintaining a home-court advantage for Embry-Riddle basketball and volleyball at the ICI Center. Founded in 1998-99, the Pep Band continues to make every Eagle contest a complete collegiate experience. A huge fan favorite among Eagle faithful, the Pep Band has helped make the ICI Center a difficult place to play, leading many fan cheers in addition to their musical talents. The Pep Band put itself on the map during the 1999-2000 season. The group traveled by bus all the way to Branson, Mo., to support the basketball team at the national tournament. The Embry-Riddle Pep Band worked in harmony with the Bobcat Band from the College of the Ozarks to create an unbelievable atmosphere during the national championship game, ultimately won by the Eagles 75-63.
