2015 season outlook

In 2014, the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team posted a 19-2 record and advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament. A good portion of that squad returns for the 2015 season, which will be the Eagles’ first as a provisional member of NCAA II. Even though the Eagles aren’t eligible for postseason play during the provisional phase of the membership process, Head Coach Samantha Bohon isn’t planning on doing anything differently with her team this season. “We always attacked our schedule when we were in the NAIA, and we will attack it in the NCAA,” Bohon said. “We believe we have a team that can compete at a high level in Division II, and we want to jump right in and play some of the toughest competition we can to really gauge where we stand at this level.”

GOALKEEPERS The goalkeeper position has been consistent for each of the last two seasons, and that trend will continue in 2015 as seniors Olivia Lynch and Jennifer Grimes are back for the third straight season. Lynch was a first team NSCAA/Continental Tire All-America selection a year ago after posting a 19-2 record with eight shutouts. She allowed just 13 goals and made 47 saves, finishing the year with a 0.68 goals against average and a .783 save percentage. “Olivia is one of those players where I don’t doubt she is going to respond to the new challenges and have a great year,” Bohon stated. “She’s very fit after spending the summer with significant U.S. Army commitments and we expect her to be excited about the new challenges and the level of competition at the NCAA level.” Grimes appeared in five games last year and allowed only two goals while collecting seven saves in 190 minutes of action.

“We’ve been lucky to have Jen as our second goalkeeper for the last couple of years,” Bohon remarked. “She is always ready to step in and play the position at a high level and that’s a luxury that most teams don’t have.”

DEFENDERS The back line for the Blue and Gold maintains a good bit of continuity from a year ago, with four returners to go along with one junior transfer and one freshman. “Helena and Hanna were referred to as our ‘Twin Towers’ at the national tournament last season,” Bohon said of junior All-Americans Helena Hansson and Hanna Rolfsen, who return to anchor the center of the Eagle defense. “Together they make up one of the best center back combinations in the country. With the new level of competition, we expect them to really be tested this year, but I expect them to do very well.”

Now a junior with Eagles, Hansson earned first team NAIA All-America status for the second time in her ERAU career. Described by Bohon as “extremely technical, very fast, very strong and solid in the air”, Hansson finished her second season with a goal and three assists in 19 games. A third team All-American in 2014, Rolfsen is entering her second season with the Eagles after starting 19 games at defense for the Blue and Gold a year ago. “Hanna, is very tough and physical,” Bohon stated. “She’s one of those players you want on your team because you really don’t want to have to play against her.” Senior Janina Helwig started all 21 games and played the fourth-most minutes last season, helping to anchor a defense that allowed just 15 goals and posted eight shutouts. “Janina has had a very good career as an outside back here,” Bohon commented.

“She’s very fit, very quick, and loves to make runs up the flank. We hope that she continues to improve her distribution out of the back so that this can be her best year.” Junior Gudrun Johnson also contributed to the Eagles’ shutout total, appearing in 20 games with 19 starts. She was a second team All-Sun Conference honoree and Bohon notes that her versatility makes her an option to play anywhere on the pitch. “Gudrun showed she can play in the back for us last year after playing mostly in the midfield as a freshman,” Bohon said. “She’s a good, versatile player that can really play anywhere, including up top, and that’s a great luxury for us to have as a coaching staff. She possesses great fitness and speed and we know we will get good 90-minute focus from her.” Newcomers Tifanny Larsen and Stina Næss Berge will also be vying for playing time on the back line. Larsen is a junior transfer from former Sun Conference arch-rival Northwood where she played 20 games, helping the Lady Seahawks reach the national semifinals in 2013 and 2014. “We know a lot about Tiffany already, not just because of playing against her when she was at Northwood; she also played on Liam McIlhatton’s club team when she was in high school,” Bohon stated. “She communicates well and we see her playing a big role as an outside back for us.” Berge comes to Embry-Riddle as a freshman from Hadeland, Norway. She helped her team to the Norwegian U-19 national title in 2014 and a national runner-up finish in 2012. “Stina can play anywhere on the back line for us,” Bohon said. “She’s a strong physical presence on the field, she’s good in the air and good with both feet. We’re looking for her to get significant minutes this season.”

MIDFIELDERS In the midfield, ERAU has five

on team and 2012 national runner-up squad. “Guro has come in as a freshman and made a nearly seamless transition to our style of play,” Bohon commented. “She’s extremely efficient, a very smart player, and we think she can make an instant impact on our team this year.” Freshman Rachel Owens comes to ERAU from Middletown, Delaware, where she was a five-year letter winner at the Caravel Academy. Owens earned All-State honors four times, including first team recognition as a junior and a senior after winning back-to-back state titles in 2014 and 2015. “Rachel is fit, quick, strong, good with both feet; just an all-around good player,” Bohon remarked. “We hope to have her play a role in our midfield this season and we have high expectations for her.”

FORWARDS Up top, the Eagles return three players from last year’s roster, including Andrea Frøshaug, Isabelle Haaranen and Annie Gelnaw. Frøshaug was a force offensively in 2014, racking up a team-high 39 points and 16 goals. Her prowess on the field earned her the respect of the NAIA All-America Committee who selected her as the Select Sport America-NAIA National Player of the Year, She was also tabbed as the NSCAA NAIA Player of the Year, an first team All-American and a first team All-Conference honoree. “Andrea is really excited to go after it this season,” Bohon stated. “She knows she’ll have a target on her back with all of her accomplishments from a year ago, but she’s looking forward to backing up all of those awards with another strong season.” Haaranen was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American after starting all 21 contests and finishing second on the team in goals (12), game-winners (4) and points (31).

“Isabelle has been an absolute beast in the offseason,” Bohon commented. “She is such an important player for our team because she helps set the standard as far as the culture and the chemistry with this group both on and off the field.” As a freshman, Gelnaw earned All-Sun Conference honorable mention honors after scoring six goals and tallying five assists in 19 games. “Annie had a great freshman year for us last year,” Bohon remarked. “She was a key player for us both as a starter and as that first player off the bench. We’re looking for her to have strong sophomore season this year.”

2015 season outlook

returners and a pair of incoming freshman. Leading the core group of returners are seniors Katherine Ebbs, Kristin Sverrisdottir and Kyhla Brangman. Ebbs battled through injury on her way to Honorable Mention All-Conference recognition as a junior last year. She registered 23 points on seven goals and a team-high nine assists. Three of her goals were game-winners and two came from the penalty spot. “Katherine is probably our biggest playmaker,” Bohon stated. “She helps set the tone of our team on the field and we’re excited to have her back for one more season.” Sverrisdottir tallied nine points in her junior season with three goals, including two game-winners, and three assists in 19 matches last season. “Kristin has been a key player for us for three years and we expect nothing less in her final year,” Bohon said. “She’s one of our most technical players and can serve a ball on a dime. She also has one of the best shots on our team.” Brangman came off the bench in 10 contests as a junior last year and totaled 10 points on three goals and four assists after transferring from Flagler. “I wish we could’ve have four years with Khyla,” Bohon remarked. “She has a very skillful touch and is very unpredictable, in a good way, so we’re looking for her to make an even bigger impact for us in her senior season.” Emmie Johansson was a second team All-American as a freshman last season. She started all 21 games and racked up 15 points on five goals and five assists, and is player that Bohon says was a key component to the Eagles’ success in 2014. “Emmie played some forward and some midfield for us last year,” Bohon stated. “I expect her to see some time at both positions again this year. She’s one of our smartest tactical players and one of our best organizers on the field.” Junior Johanna Karlsson was in the Eagles starting lineup last season, but was hampered by injuries from a car accident early in the campaign. She appeared in nine games with five starts primarily as a defender in 2014, but will likely see more action in the midfield this season. “Johanna is looking to see more time on the field this season, whether that’s on the back line or in the midfield,” Bohon said. “She didn’t fully recover and get back into a rhythm until the end of the season, but she has had a great spring and we’re excited to see what she can do this season.” Guro Næss Berge, twin sister of Stina, joins the Blue and Gold as a freshman from Hadeland, Norway, where she also was a member of the 2014 Norwegian U-19 champi-

SCHEDULE Despite not being eligible for postseason play, Bohon has set up a challenging schedule for the Eagles that has the potential to allow Embry-Riddle to establish themselves as a force in NCAA II right away. “Our schedule is brutal,” Bohon said. “But that’s how we’ve always done things. We want to challenge ourselves and in order to do that, you’ve got to play some of the best teams at this level. We feel like we’ve set that up once again with our schedule this season.” The Eagles open the season at the Armstrong Pirate Shootout in Savannah, Georgia, where they will face North Carolina-Pembroke on Sept. 4 and Armstrong State on Sept. 6. Following that tournament, the Eagles will travel to Valdosta State on Sept. 10 for their third straight game in the Peach State as well as their final game outside of the state of Florida for the 2015 season. Embry-Riddle will play the first of its six home games on Sept. 13 when NCAA I Stetson will make the trip from DeLand to the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles and Hatters last met in a regular season contest in 2013, a game that ended in a scoreless draw. ERAU will play its first Sunshine State Conference opponent on Sept. 16 when the Blue and Gold travel to Winter Park to face Rollins. The Eagles return to Daytona Beach for back-to-back games against Barry (Sept. 19) and Nova Southeastern (Sept. 23) before traveling to St. Petersburg to take on Eckerd on Sept. 26. Embry-Riddle will take the field seven times in the month of October, including three home games. Tampa will pay a visit on Oct. 3, while Florida Southern (Oct. 14) and Palm Beach Atlantic (Oct. 21) will make mid-week trips to Daytona Beach later in the month. The Blue and Gold will close out the 2015 season against NAIA member Georgia Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Georgia on Nov. 1. As a provisional member of NCAA II, Embry-Riddle is not eligible for postseason play in 2015.

ERAU Athletics in Transition to NCAA II In July 2015, the Embry-Riddle Athletics program was approved to advance to year two of the three-year NCAA Division II membership process. Achieving full NCAA Division II membership typically takes three years, provided the athletic department successfully completes each phase of the membership process. The Eagles will play their first full season of NCAA II competition in 2015-16 as provisional members of the Sunshine State Conference. Per conference rules, the Eagles will not be eligible to participate in any league championship events for the next two seasons and will not be eligible for NCAA II postseason until completion of the membership process. Assuming all expectations have been met in Candidacy Year Two, as well as a year of provisional NCAA II membership, Embry-Riddle will be a full NCAA member in 2017-18.

Following an extensive nationwide search, Daytona Beach native, Samantha Bohon was selected to lead the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer program in 2007, making her only the second head coach in program history. In eight seasons with the Eagles, Bohon has led the Blue and Gold to eight consecutive postseason appearances. Since finishing third in The Sun Conference regular season standings in 2007 and 2008, the Eagles have finished as one of the top two teams in the league. The Eagles also won four consecutive conference tournament titles from 2009-12 and have reached the NAIA National Championship round of eight in each of the last four seasons. The 2014 season proved to be a banner year for Bohon’s squad. The Eagles blazed through Sun Conference play, finishing with a perfect 9-0 league record. As winners of the league’s North Division, ERAU took on South Division winners Northwood and wrapped up the regular season championship with a 2-0 defeat of the Seahawks on the road. The Eagles’ 16-1 regular season record, which included seven wins over ranked opponents, landed the Blue and Gold in the top spot of the NAIA National rankings. The Eagles closed out the campaign at 19-2 overall and advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament. Embry-Riddle secured spots in the NAIA National Championship as tournament hosts in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, the Eagles defeated tournament favorite Northwood on their home field to claim the conference tournament title and earn an automatic bid to the national tournament. A year later, Bohon coached her squad to a repeat of that performance as ERAU took another road win against the Seahawks to return to the national tournament for the fourth straight year. In 2011, the Eagles finished at 18-3-1 overall and 9-1 in conference and came away with their third conference tournament title in as many years in thrilling fashion with a 2-1 victory in overtime against St. Thomas. The Blue and Gold notched a 1-0 home win against Judson in the NAIA Opening Round to advance to the national tournament final site, which featured the 16 Opening Round winners. For the first time ever, the Eagles earned a win in the second round of the tournament and made it to the elite eight before they were knocked out by four-time defending national champion, Lee. The 2012 season saw the Eagles post another remarkable season, which included a 3-1 upset of top-ranked and four-time defending national champion Lee and the program’s highest ever ranking of No. 4 in the NAIA national polls. The Eagles won the conference tournament crown for the fourth consecutive year and closed out the season in the Elite Eight at the NAIA National Tournament with a 17-6 overall record. Her efforts afforded Bohon NAIA/NSCAA regional Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year. In 2013, Bohon’s squad posted its second consecutive upset of a top-ranked team, besting 2012 national champion Lindsey Wilson 1-0 at a neutral site in Orange Beach, Ala. That result helped the Blue and Gold to the program’s first No. 1 ranking in the national coaches poll and the Eagles (16-5-1) closed out the season ranked sixth in the postseason poll after advancing to the national quarterfinals for the fourth year in a row. For her efforts, Bohon was named the league’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2009 and won the award outright in 2010. She has also been named the NSCAA/NAIA Regional Coach of the Year three times. Bohon was also selected as the 2013-14 Sun Conference Coach of Character Award winner. The Coach of Character Award is given annually to head coach who has been outstanding in embracing the five core values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative (integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership), using methods of teaching character through sport, and in community leadership through volunteering or service. In her eight-year tenure as the Eagles’ head coach, Bohon has had a National Player of the Year, 21 All-Americans, 10 honorable mention All-Americans, one Sun Conference Player of the Year, four league Newcomers of the Year, 39 first-team All-Conference and 10 second-team All-Conference selections. Bohon’s teams support the ERAU Athletics Student-Person-Player philosophy. They have performed well in the classroom, garnering NAIA Scholar Team honors in each of the last four seasons. As a team the Eagles posted a 3.56 cumulative grade point average in 2014-15 and over the last eight years, ERAU women’s soccer has produced 15 NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes and 21 Academic All-Conference selections, as well as four Sun Conference Champions of Character Award winners. Additionally, 16 other individuals have been awarded ERAU’s Champions of Character Scholarship, including Lauren Gallant who was The Sun Conference’s selection for the NAIA’s 2012 Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award. Bohon’s teams have also been very active in the community. In 2014 alone, the women’s soccer team donated close to 380 hours in community service. The team has volunteered for projects including painting and cleaning local churches and elementary school buildings, Heart Walk and breast cancer awareness events, free soccer BOHON’S COACHING FILE

clinics, speaking engagements at local schools, and organizing the annual Color Me Kate run. Originally started as a fundraiser to aid ERAU women’s soccer alumnae, the late Kate Waidmann, proceeds from the Color Me Kate run now go toward the scholarship that bears Waidmann’s name. The Eagles hosted the fourth annual Habitat for Humanity Invitational tournament in 2014, which included a workday for all four participating teams with a Habitat for Humanity project. The Eagles’ efforts have not gone unnoticed as the team was named the Halifax Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Group of the Year and was the runner-up to the United Way/Bright House Civic Group of the Year in 2013. Prior to taking a two-year hiatus from the coaching realm, Bohon spent four years as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee (2001-05), where she served as the Lady Vols’ recruiting coordinator and was responsible for team defense. During her tenure, the Lady Vols won three Southeastern Conference titles, made three NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances, and were ranked in the Top 10 in three of her four seasons. In 2003, Bohon managed a Lady Vol defense that allowed a program-low 18 goals in 24 matches and set new school records in shutouts (12) and goals against average (0.73). Her efforts on the recruiting trail brought in a class that was ranked fifth nationally and was tops in the SEC and the Central Region in 2005. Bohon was also affiliated with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Program from 1998 to 2000. She served as a team captain for the Under 21 National Team and was a floating member of the 1999 Women’s World Cup Residency program. She made two international appearances with the full team, netting a goal against Finland and registering an assist against the Ukraine. In addition, she played for the Raleigh Wings in the W-League, which won a national championship in 1999. Bohon played collegiate soccer at Duke University where she was a four-year starter from 1994-97. A threetime All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-South selection, Bohon was selected as a Freshman All-American and a third-team All-American by Soccer News and Soccer America. She was a tri-captain for the Blue Devils’ nationally ranked squad and also garnered ACC All-Academic honors. Over her four-year career, Bohon tallied 38 points on 16 goals and six assists. As a senior, she worked her way into fifth place on the Duke single-season scoring charts after registering 28 points (13 goals, 2 assists). Bohon continued to contribute to the Blue Devils’ success on the field as a volunteer assistant coach for the 1998 and 1999 seasons. She also interned at the NCAA office in Indianapolis, Ind. where she assisted with the operations of the 2001 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships. Bohon is a product of Seabreeze High School in Ormond Beach, Fla., and was inducted into the Sandcrabs’ Hall of Fame in December 2014. Upon graduation from Seabreeze, Bohon went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Duke with a double major in English and Sociology in 1998. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Sport Administration from the University of North Carolina in 2001. Bohon is also very active in the local community, serving on the Children’s Advocacy Center Board of Advisors as well as the Campus Outreach-Florida Board. She also runs clinics and youth soccer camps locally. Bohon resides in Daytona Beach with her husband Matt and their sons Barres, Walker and Corder.

assistant coach • 6th season • (embry-riddle, 2007) Head Coach Samantha Baggett Bohon announced Liam McIlhatton as Embry-Riddle women’s soccer coach in the spring of 2010. McIlhatton played four seasons with the Embry-Riddle men’s team from 200306. McIlhatton’s impact on the men’s lineup was immediate as he earned a spot in the first 11 as a freshman and kept his job as a starting defensive midfielder throughout his career. He played in every match in his first three seasons with the Blue and Gold and was on his way to doing the same as a senior, but was sidelined by a season-ending injury against Lindsey-Wilson in early October. The Scotland native helped the Eagles to four conference regular season and four regional tournament titles and totaled 28 points on eight goals and 12 assists in 67 career appearances. He received All-Conference recognition twice and was named to the All-Region and honorable mention All-America rosters as a junior. After leaving Embry-Riddle, McIlhatton played semipro soccer for St. Anthony’s FC in Scotland. He then went on to combine his knowledge of the sport and his experience playing in the United States as a Senior

International Sports Consultant for Firstpoint USA. While at Firstpoint, his primary responsibility was finding opportunities for athletes in the United Kingdom to get an education while playing their sport at an American institution of higher learning. “Our program is so fortunate to have Liam enter into his sixth season with us. It is not a coincidence that our program’s improvement can be traced back to when he started here. He was a reliable player on the field for the men’s team and has been incredibly loyal and knowledgeable. He has made the transition into coaching seamlessly. He is a huge asset to our program, we are so excited to have him here. He specializes in the technical work and a lot of the speed and agility work with our team. We couldn’t be happier having him here.” McIlhatton completed his undergraduate degree in Communications in 2007 and his Masters of Science in Aeronautics in 2013.

nils carlson goalkeeping coach • 1st season • (embry-riddle, 2015) Head Coach Samantha Bohon announced the addition of Nils Carlson to the coaching staff prior to the start of the 2015 season. Carlson will work with the Eagle goalkeepers. “Nils will be a great addition for our team this year,” Bohon said. “After recently finishing his playing career here at ERAU, he’s so in touch with a goalkeeper’s perspective and can offer some great insight for both Jen and Olivia since he just finished playing himself. We’re excited to have him here.“ Carlson played four years for the ERAU men’s soccer team and was the Eagles’ starting goalkeeper in each of his four seasons wearing the Blue and Gold. He helped the Eagles to conference regular season titles in 2011 and 2013, and an NAIA National Championship appearance in 2013. Originally from Vastra, Sweden, Carlson closed

out his ERAU career as one of the Eagles’ top five goalkeepers all time in four categories, including shutouts (1st, 25), minutes played (2nd, 6,461), saves (3rd, 302) and goals against average (5th, 1.11). Carlson was recognized for his accomplishments both on and off the field. A two-time first team All-Sun Conference selection, he was tabbed as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman and garnered honorable mention All-America honors that same year. As a senior, he was named to the Academic All-Conference roster and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.

After being on the Eagles’ roster for four seasons, Gabriela Casariego will be on the sidelines for the Blue and Gold as the team manager in 2015. Casariego appeared in 43 games in her collegiate career, giving the Eagles depth in the midfield. She netted six goals and five assists for 17 total career points and was a part of four NAIA National Tournament teams, including the 2014 squad that advanced to the NAIA National semifinals.

emmy herrick team impact Embry-Riddle women’s soccer head coach Samantha Bohon announced the signing of Emmy Herrick to a National Letter of Intent on Sept. 1. Herrick was paired up with the ERAU women’s soccer team through Team IMPACT. “We are thrilled to sign Emmy as the newest member of our Embry-Riddle soccer team,” Bohon said. “Her positive attitude, good energy and desire to be a part of our soccer family make her a great fit. This opportunity for Emmy’s ERAU teammates to go beyond themselves and invest in life outside of soccer will be invaluable.” Herrick is a seven-year-old from Ormond Beach who was diagnosed with a gastro-intestinal disorder at an early age, which requires her to use a feeding tube to help her colon function properly. She also has sensory processing disorder where her growth motor skills are a bit delayed. Emmy is working hard at both occupational and physical therapy to help improve her growth motor responses. Herrick enjoys learning about dinosaurs, space and planes, and loves chicken and burgers. Her favorite number is three, her favorite TV shows are Teen Titans and SpongeBob, and her favorite movie is Sponge out of Water. She also loves animals and enjoys catching tadpoles in the stream behind her house (she is keeping 13 of the tadpoles she caught this summer in her fish tank at home). Like many across the country, Herrick enjoyed

watching Team USA in the World Cup this summer and is very excited to be a part of the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team. Team IMPACT is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. ERAU Women’s Soccer Tops National Coaches Poll The Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team celebrated a program first on Oct. 8. After opening the season at 9-1-1, which included wins over NAIA Top 10 foes Lindsey Wilson (No. 2), Concordia (Ore.) (No. 4) and William Carey (No. 10), the Eagles were recognized for their efforts on the pitch as they were ranked No. 1 in the nation in the fifth NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll of the season. The Eagles, who opened the season ranked No. 6 nationally, received 17 first-place votes and 588 total points to move into the top spot for the first time in program history.

Eagles Exit The Sun Conference as Regular Season Champions The Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team made a statement in their final season playing in the Sun Conference as for the first time in the Samantha Bohon era, the Eagles went undefeated in conference play. As the champions of the league’s North Division, the Eagles, rated as the nation’s top-ranked team just one day prior, traveled to West Palm Beach to face four-time regular season winners and 14th-ranked Northwood for the 2014 regular season crown. Embry-Riddle dominated the possession for the majority of the game. Propelled by good combination play and foraging runs down the flanks, as well as strong midfield play and a stout effort by the back line, the Eagles took 12 shots, including seven on frame, and held a Seahawk team that averages 18.72 shots per contest to just six shots on the day. At the final whistle, goals by Emmie Johansson and Nina Joergensen had given the Eagles a 2-0 victory and the conference regular season title.

Eagles Advance to National Semifinals After making it to the quarterfinal round of the NAIA National Championship for three straight years, the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team was finally able to break through and move on to the semifinals in 2014. The Eagles’ national tournament run began with a decisive 5-1 defeat of Reinhardt in Opening Round play. The tournament’s top seed, the Eagles then dispatched Hastings 3-0 to advance to the quarterfinals against ninth-seeded Benedictine. Goals by Julia Karlernas and Kristin Sverrisdottir gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the

22

first half, but the Ravens managed to get a goal in the 80th minute to cut the ERAU lead in half. The goal gave the Ravens a new sense of urgency and the final nine minutes of the match featured scrappy play as Benedictine looked for the equalizer and ERAU worked to maintain the lead. Neither team was able to get another clear chance at the goal and at the end of 90 minutes, the Eagles walked off the field with the win. In the semifinal matchup against Northwestern Ohio, the Eagles had the better of the offense through-

out the contest. They out shot the Racers 19-5 and bested UNOH 10-2 in corner kick opportunities, but it was the Racers who capitalized on one of their two shots on frame for the win five minutes into a second period of overtime.

History

On Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Company at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance. In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dollars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.
