And there is space and room for your imagination to roam free. At some distance of the city and daily commotion, everything changes perspective. Walsemaweer is a head-necktrunk farmhouse from 1869, which was put back on the drawing table in 2007 in order to optimally facilitate (several-day) work sessions. Walsemaweer is perfect for people (teams) that wish to give attention to something or to each other in a relaxed manner and away from all the daily hassle. The space and tranquillity and the comfortable design of the rooms and apartments and work spaces also contribute. There are options for congresses. The Theefabriek (tea factory) is a singular combination of the Netherlands’ only tea museum, an attractive tea room with probably the most extensive tea menu in the world, and a nostalgic tea shop... a true paradise for tea lovers! In the 16th century, the house was expanded and embellished, and a moat was dug. From 1670, both wings were added, resulting in a U-shaped building. In 1781, the master of the house, De Sandra Veldtman, started a major renovation and determined the current appearance of the Groningen estate house. Both buildings in the forecourt were also fully renovated at that time. Left is the treasury, which used to be a farm and today is a restaurant. At the right is the coach house with a museum shop and exhibition space. The Orangery also functions as an exhibition space. Until 1972, the Thomassen à Thuessink van der Hoop van Slochteren family lived in the Groningen estate house. After that, the Gerrit van Houten Stichting in Groningen became the owner. Today, the Groningen estate house is a museum, combined with a wide range of cultural events. The recently renovated park behind the estate house dates mainly from the 19th century, with the romantic characteristics of the English landscape style. A light-hearted exhibition in the Orangery shows how this special park design developed (accessible free of charge). Within the framework of the New Follies project, ten remarkable ‘peculiar buildings’ were realised; eight in the park (see plan) and two on the Erfgoedplein (Hoofdweg 9 grounds)

In 1464, Jacobus Wiltingh, priest in Garrelsweer and vicar in Loppersum, gave his Apell settlement to the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross under condition that a monastery would be erected on this place. A new monastery developed in the Westerwolde area with the name of Domus Novae Lucis, House of the New Light. The Ter Apel monastery is the largest remaining one in Groningen and is open to the public. Since 1992, the monastery has been included in the UNESCO list of top 100 locations in the Netherlands.

An old sailing ship is docked at the Schuitendiep in the historic heart of the city. Today, this originally rigged two-mast clipper ship from 1908 serves as a pancake ship. Whether in the hold, at the leeboard, in the engine room or amidships, the atmosphere of a classic sailing ship is found everywhere. Join in and make a selection from the more than one hundred various pancakes prepared according to traditional methods. This is the perfect location for an excursion, reception and groups up to 160 persons. Children are in for a special treat at the ’t Pannekoekschip: the birthday boy or girl is allowed to prepare their own pancake while the rest of the party decorates a huge pile of pancakes. The Noordergat marina in Lauwersoog provides a very special location for boat owners who choose to moor here. The marina has an immediate connection to the Lauwersmeer and provides options for sailing cruises to the province and city of Groningen. It also has a connection to the Frisian lakes. The marina is a mere 300 metres from the Robbengat sluice, an entrance gate for sailing out on the Wadden Sea and to the Frisian islands and the North Sea. It has excellent and wellcared for facilities for boats as well as their owners. In addition to mooring places in the sailing season, there are plenty of options for indoor winter storage accommodation in the fully renovated and insulated boathouse or winter storage accommodation on shore or in the water. Our boat lift can easily and carefully hoist boats of up to 35 tons from the water or lower them into the water. In recent years, it has been converted into a passenger ship, retaining as many original features as possible. These ships were originally used for transporting freight (mainly peat and beets) via canals and channels in the north of the Netherlands. Some of them were provided with a motor, while others used sails, usually combined with ‘hauling’ for which sometimes a horse, but usually the bargee’s wife, pulled the boat along from the bank. Beppe is available for hire with the captain and sailor for a few hours, half a day or an entire day. We do not sail fixed routes, but determine in consultation how much time we will take and the route to be sailed. The pick-up point is usually in the city of Groningen. In 1940, it was converted into a North Sea cutter (SCH112), and in the 1960s into the Harlingen shrimp boat. Following that, an Amsterdam citizen redesigned it as a sailing houseboat to sail the Baltic Sea. After a renovation in 2006, the ship was adapted to suit for excursions on the Wadden Sea, the Lauwersmeer lake and the Reitdiep.
