100 years One of the sitting position mechanics ergonomics pioneers was born in 1907. Bruno MATHSSON (1907-1988), whose “small history” tells that it is by moulding his body’s print in Swedish snow that this Scandinavian designer found the ideal seat shape.As early as 1931, he draws a chair with straps, the mythical “grasshopper” for a hospital, but it is too advanced for his time and he cannot get the Swedish industrialists to publish it, this chair is put in the “oubliettes”. And it will be himself who will publish his furniture and will spread it by mail order (once again a pioneer !). Glory arrives after the Paris “Exposition Universelle” in 1937 and the Lyons (France) manufacturer Marcel MICHAUD believes in him, and launches out the manufacturing of some models that are now “cult”. Today, the heart of ergonomics at the workplace is presented by ERGONOMA at A+A tradeshow : there again, pioneers and recognized manufacturers will present their more recent achievements. Along its columns for nearly 3 years, Ergonoma Journal seeks all that is done to improve working conditions and wellness at work, by privileging creativity and design as a man/machine interface. This issue gives a broad place to industrial design impossible to part with aesthetic usability.

100 ans C’est en 1907 qu’est né l’un des pionniers de l’ergonomie de la mécanique de la position assise. Bruno MATHSSON (1907-1988), dont la « petite histoire » raconte que c’est en moulant l’empreinte de son corps dans la neige suédoise que ce designer scandinave a trouvé la forme du siège idéal. Dés 1931, il dessine une chaise à sangles, la mythique « sauterelle » pour un hôpital, mais il est trop en avance sur son temps et n’arrive pas à se faire éditer par les industriels suédois : cette chaise est mise aux oubliettes. Et ce sera luimême qui éditera son mobilier et le diffusera en VPC (là encore un pionnier du genre !). La gloire arrive après l’exposition universelle de Paris en 1937 : le fabricant lyonnais (France) Marcel MICHAUD croit en lui et se lance dans la fabrication de certains modèles aujourd’hui cultes. Aujourd’hui le cœur de l’ergonomie au poste de travail est présenté par ERGONOMA dans le cadre du salon A+A : là encore des éditeurs pionniers et reconnus y présentent leurs plus récentes réalisations. Ergonoma Journal, au fil de ses colonnes depuis bientôt 3 ans, part à la recherche de tout ce qui se fait en matière d’amélioration des conditions de travail et de bien être, en privilégiant la créativité et le design en tant qu’interface Homme/Machine. Ce numéro donne une large place au design industriel indissociable de l’utilisabilité esthétique.

A controls / screens interacting mouse. In civil aviation, the number of the standards and codes directing the least detail is impressive, leaving little place to integrate new forms. But technologies evolving very quickly new systems to develop appear. Therefore Thalès Avionics not having found any “super mouse” in the interfacing, validation and menus serrated roller section, launched a call for tenders to industrial designers in order to realize a complex and dynamic man machine interface. For this reason, Boulogne Billancourt (Paris) based « Design Concept Frenoy » industrial design agency was commissioned « to help conceiving and defining an aeronautical designator for piloting A 380 AIRBUS ». or Olivier FRENOY (whom we met in late July 2007), the design of this super mouse goes beyond a simple aesthetics work and it involves three great fields that are an integral part of his trade : cognitive ergonomics in the Man machine interaction - MMI-, the usability and the human factor. The stakes consisted in integrating the various touchpad, track-ball or joystick interfaces under the constraints of piloting and safety, as well as the positioning of the equipment in a mono product, that would satisfy the pilots, a true challenge. “ We set up an iterative methodology based on concrete achievements and regular evaluations by our customer made it possible to advance the project. ” An specificity of the Agency : “ to allow the customer to touch finger ” to the product to become as soon as possible, not scorning CAD and 3D, there were no less than 70 foam volumes and ten functional models allowing a natural visualization in real size as well as a materialisation of the ergonomic parameters and use functionalities. An additional subtlety of the product: its acceptability by the Chief pilot as well as by the co-pilot. It was therefore necessary to set up two keyboard integrated “mice”, totally similar, of which one is used by the Chief pilot’s right hand and the other by the co-pilot’s left hand, the whole in the most natural possible position, the hand in prolongation of the arm, without break at the wrist level. These mice being used in essential phases, -with a simple click, the pilot selects his flight parameters-, should not be disturbed by inopportune vibrations related to the state of the tarmacs coatings or when vibrations related to turbulences occur, their gripping must be simple, precise and effective. The pilots form adoption allows to let the hand slip naturally while their palm rests on the light round heightening for a major contribution to the touch sense, releasing a better finger autonomy particularly requested in these phases. T his super mouse makes it possible to navigate with a pointer on the 8 instrument panel screens. It gives the possibility to the pilot to modify his track without having to compute again the new waypoints co-ordinates (a change of course along a given track). While clicking on the posted trajectory, the pilot can in this way post a new recomputed trajectory, allowing the air controllers to have a clear situation on the plane trajectory. Until this innovation, the air controllers did not have a direct reading of the recomputed flight plan, only the new parameters were posted.

To quote again Olivier FRENOY in response to the industrialists’ increasingly marked request to search for a better user-friendliness of their products or their software “… these new data call into question our traditional object creator trade, in order to offer our customers a deeper step, combining container and contents, form and function, handling and result, therefore ensuring the industrialization of products perfectly fitting the consumers’ expectations ”.

Une souris d’interaction pilote / écrans. Dans l’aviation civile, le nombre des normes et codifications régissant le moindre détail est impressionnant, ce qui laisse peu de place à l’intégration de nouvelle formes. Mais, les technologies évoluant très vite, de nouveaux systèmes à mettre au point apparaissent. Ainsi Thalès Avionics n’ayant pas trouvé de « super- souris » dans la rubrique interfaçage, validation et molette des menus, a lancé un appel d’offres auprès de designers industriels pour la conception d’un système homme machine, complexe et dynamique. C’est ainsi que l’agence de design industriel « Design Concept Frenoy », basée à Boulogne Billancourt (Paris), s’est vue confier une mission « d’aide à la conception et à la définition d’un designateur aéronautique pour le pilotage de l’A 380 d’AIRBUS ».

our Olivier FRENOY (que nous avons rencontré en cette fin juillet 2007), la conception de cette super souris au-delà d’un simple travail d’esthétique fait appel à trois grands domaines qui font partie intégrante de son métier : l’ergonomie cognitive dans l’interaction Homme machine –IHM-, l’utilisabilité et le facteur humain. L’enjeu consistait à intégrer les différentes interfaces du touchpad, track-ball ou du joystick sous les contraintes du pilotage et de la sécurité, associés à l’implantation des matériels , en un mono produit, qui satisfasse les pilotes, une vraie gageure. « Nous avons mis en place une méthodologie itérative qui sur la base d’exécutables concrets et d’évaluations régulières par notre client permettait de faire avancer le projet. » Une originalité de l’agence : « faire toucher du doigt » par le client, le plus tôt possible le produit en devenir, tout en ne dédaignant pas la CAO et la 3D, ce furent pas moins de 70 volumes en mousse et une dizaine de maquettes fonctionnelles qui ont permis une visualisation grandeur nature ainsi qu’une matérialisation des paramètres ergonomiques et des fonctionnalités d’usage. Subtilité supplémentaire du produit : son acceptabilité par le Chef pilote comme par le co-pilote. Il fallait donc implanter deux « souris » intégrées à un clavier, en tout point semblables, dont l’une est utilisée par la main droite du Chef pilote et l’autre par la main gauche du co-pilote, le tout dans la position la plus naturelle possible, main en prolongement du bras, sans cassure au niveau du poignet. Ces souris servant dans des phases essentielles, (d’un simple click le pilote sélectionne ses paramètres de vol), ne doivent pas être perturbées par des vibrations intempestives liées à l’état des revêtements des tarmacs ou lors des vibrations liées aux turbulences, leur préhension doit être simple, précise et efficace. C ette super souris permet de naviguer avec un pointeur sur les 8 écrans de la planche de bord. Elle donne la possibilité au pilote de modifier sa route sans avoir à retaper les coordonnées des nouveaux « points tournants » (un changement de cap le long d'une route donnée). En cliquant sur la trajectoire affichée, le pilote peut ainsi faire apparaître une nouvelle trajectoire recalculée, permettant aux contrôleurs aériens d’avoir une situation claire sur la trajectoire de l’avion. Jusqu’à cette innovation, les contrôleurs aériens n’avaient pas une lecture directe du plan de vol recalculé, seuls les nouveaux paramètres en étaient affichés.

It is in PAU (France), on February 11, 1911, i.e. 95 years before the trial flight with passengers of A380 and its 420 tons on September 5, 2006 (At the controls Frank Chapman, assisted by Jacques Rosay, the chief test pilot) that Theodore LE MARTIN, Louis BLERIOT chief-pilot, test pilot and adjuster, realized aboard AEROBUS, a BLERIOT monoplane, the first test flight with 7 passengers-8 people altogether-, winning the air transport with passengers world record. The flight total weight, including oil and gasoline was 473 kg. Thus Opening in this way the air transport era, the AEROBUS prefigurated the AIRBUS.

Le poids total enlevé, en comprenant l’huile et l’essence était de 473kg. Ouvrant ainsi l’ère du transport aérien, l’AEROBUS préfigurait l’AIRBUS.

The light is the essential medium between the man and his environment : day periods are rhythmed by deliberate choices according to the activities. Dispenser of energy, the light whether illumination, lamp or light bath, is the only energy never not to disturb silence. Workplace light is a tool impossible to circumvent : it accompanies, helps and protects. Today, architects, lighting engineers, designers and ergonomists use all the new light products facets to stimulate professional workand to optimize work life quality. THE ESSENTIAL “REQUIREMENTS LIST”

facilitate a task execution : it is the visual performance concept. A normal vision needs at least a light minimum. A good illumination level allows a good productivity with in particular less errors, accidents, and visual tiredness. To ensure the wellbeing : it is the quite as fundamental concept of visual comfort. Because in addition to the average illumination level necessary, a good quality of the light emitted by the sources is absolutely necessary, as well as a uniformity of illumination, and a brightness balance to avoid being dazzled. According to activities type, advised illumination can vary in an important way. One can distinguish two principal categories according to the tasks to be carried out nature : tasks not requiring details perception (about 300 luxes illumination) ; tasks requiring details perception (from 500 to 1000 luxes). Measured illumination is that of the work table. The work table is the reference area on which work is carried out normally. In interior lighting, unless otherwise specified, this plan is by definition horizontal and is located at 0,85 m of the ground.

To realize an efficient lighting , you need a real requirements list, defining precisely technical features of the places to light; their environment, carried on activities qualitative and quantitative lighting requirements. The lighting design must be as early as possible, as soon as the decision to transform old buildings or to arrange new ones is taken. Luminaries number, type and position will depend on equipment and furniture positioning and buildings architectural layout. To plan lighting only afterwards is to undoubtedly expose oneself, to complicated and expensive modifications. Generally speaking, and lawful for new buildings, the natural light has to be used for work-intended buildings lighting and it is necessary to lay down a natural illumination objective when defining the workplace design requirements list.

La lumière et l’éclairage au travail Le bon niveau d'éclairement permet une bonne productivité et une baisse des erreurs et des fatigues visuelles. La lumière est le médium indispensable entre l’homme et son environnement : les étapes du jour sont rythmées par des choix délibérés en fonction des activités. Dispensatrice d’énergie, la lumière qu’elle soit illumination, point lumineux ou bain de lumière, est la seule énergie à ne jamais perturber le silence. La lumière sur les lieux de travail est un outil incontournable : elle accompagne, aide et protège. Aujourd’hui, architectes, éclairagistes, designers et ergonomes utilisent toutes les facettes des nouveaux produits de lumière pour stimuler l’activité professionnelle et optimiser la qualité de vie au travail. L’ÉCLAIRAGE DOIT :

MAINTENIR LA QUALITÉ DE LA LUMIÈRE

Faciliter l’exécution d'une tâche : c’est la notion de performance visuelle. Une vision normale ne peut s’exercer qu’avec un minimum de lumière. Un bon niveau d'éclairement permet une bonne productivité avec notamment une baisse des erreurs, des accidents, une moindre fatigue visuelle. Assurer le bien-être : c’est la notion toute aussi fondamentale du confort visuel. Car en plus du niveau moyen d'éclairement nécessaire, il faut absolument veiller à une bonne qualité de la lumière émise par les sources, une uniformité de l’éclairement, et à l’équilibre des luminances pour éviter les éblouissements. Suivant la nature des activités, l’éclairement conseillé peut varier de manière importante. On peut distinguer deux catégories principales suivant la nature des tâches à effectuer : tâches ne nécessitant pas de perception de détails (éclairement de l’ordre de 300 lux) ; tâches nécessitant la perception de détails (de 500 à 1000 lux). L’éclairement mesuré est celui du plan de travail. Le plan de travail est la surface de référence constituée par un plan sur lequel s’effectue normalement le travail. En éclairage intérieur, sauf indication contraire, ce plan est par définition horizontal et situé à 0,85 m du sol.

La qualité de la lumière naturelle est, en effet, souvent meilleure que celle de la lumière artificielle, ainsi que le rendu des couleurs qui a une influence positive pour la détection des défauts, l’amélioration de la qualité et de la sécurité. La lumière naturelle permet également de conserver un contact avec l’extérieur, ce qui, tout en permettant de diminuer les contraintes physiques et psychologiques, présente un intérêt pour les économies d’énergie. Un éclairage naturel mal conçu a, cependant, des conséquences négatives en termes d’éblouissement comme il peut accroître la chaleur, en été, à l’intérieur des locaux par l’effet de serre. Mais en pratique, la lumière naturelle est rarement suffisante pour une activité professionnelle. Se rappeler enfin que l'encrassement des luminaires, le vieillissement des revêtements, rendent nécessaire une maintenance prévue et régulière pour conserver le niveau d'éclairement de la mise en service.

L’INDISPENSABLE « CAHIER DES CHARGES » La réalisation d’un éclairage performant demande donc de réaliser un véritable cahier des charges, en définissant avec précision les caractéristiques techniques des lieux à éclairer ; l'environnement de ceux-ci, les besoins qualitatifs et quantitatifs en éclairage des activités exercées. La conception de l’éclairage doit être la plus précoce possible, dès la décision de transformer d’anciens locaux ou d’en aménager de nouveaux. Le nombre, la nature et l’emplacement des luminaires dépendront de l’implantation des machines, du mobilier et de l'architecture des locaux. Ne prévoir l’éclairage qu'après, c'est s’exposer, à coup sûr à des modifications compliquées et coûteuses. D’une manière générale, et réglementaire pour les constructions neuves, la lumière naturelle doit pouvoir être utilisée pour l’éclairage des locaux destinés au travail et il est nécessaire de se fixer un objectif pour l’éclairement naturel dès l’élaboration du cahier des charges du projet de conception des lieux de travail.

MESURER LA LUMIÈRE Le médecin du travail dispose d’appareils de mesure. Le luxmètre permet de vérifier au poste de travail le niveau d'éclairement. L’éclairement lumineux est la quantité de lumière reçue par unité de surface. Il se mesure en lux. On place la cellule de mesure au niveau des détails et des objets qui doivent être vus pour que la tâche puisse être exécutée, le travailleur étant à son poste dans sa position habituelle. Il permet aussi de déterminer l’éclairement moyen général dans le local, qui correspond à la moyenne des éclairements relevés en un certain nombre de points significatifs du local. Si, dans un local, des fluctuations de flux lumineux sont prévisibles, dues en particulier à l'éclairage naturel, il est important de relever les niveaux d'éclairement à différentes périodes de la journée ou de l'année. Le luminancemètre est placé à la hauteur des yeux des travailleurs et orienté dans la direction de la source lumineuse, du reflet ou de la surface concernée, pour mesurer la luminance. La Luminance détermine l’aspect lumineux d’une surface éclairée ou d’une source, dans une direction donnée. Elle se mesure en candela par m2. suite et fin p. 8

Zumtobel a développé un concept de réglage biodynamique de l’éclairage qui s’oriente sur le rythme naturel de l’homme. Ce concept s’appuie sur des courbes scientifiques de commande d’éclairage déjà préprogrammées dans le panneau qui créent à tout moment la situation lumière la mieux adaptée à l’homme : Sur le panneau tactile, une ligne jaune indique l’intensité de l’éclairage direct, une ligne bleue symbolise l’éclairage indirect. TO MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF THE LIGHT The natural light quality is, indeed, often better than that of the artificial light, as well as the colours display which has a positive influence for the defect detection and the quality and safety improvement. The natural light also allows to preserve a contact with outside, which, while making it possible to decrease the physical and psychological constraints, is also interesting for energy saving. A badly conceived lighting has, however, negative consequences in terms of dazzling as it can increase heat, in summer, inside the buildings by the greenhouse effect. But in practice, the natural light is seldom sufficient for a professional work. Remember finally that luminaries clogging, the coatings ageing make necessary to plan maintenance and to apply it regularly to preserve the commissioning illumination level.

TO MEASURE THE LIGHT The occupational doctor has a measuring apparatus. The lux meter allows to check the illumination level at the workplace. The illumination is the quantity of light received per area unit. It is measured in lux. One places the measuring cell at the level of details and objects which must be seen so that the task can be carried out, the worker being at his station in his usual position. It also allows to determine an average general room illumination, corresponding to the average of the illuminations raised in a certain number of significant places in the room. If, in a room, luminous flow fluctuations are foreseeable, due in particular to daylight, it is important to record the illumination levels at various periods of the day or the year. The lux meter is placed at workers eye level and oriented in the light source or the concerned reflection or surface direction, in order to measure brightness. Brightness determines the luminous aspect of a lighted surface or a source, in a given direction. It is measured in candela per m2.

WHICH ARE THE VARIOUS LIGHT SOURCES ? Natural light : The daylight quantity penetrating in a building varies according to the sun rays intensity and direction, the sky clearness, the ground surrounding and the season. As well as windows dimensions, orientation and cleanliness, which are important factors. The light quantity entering the workplace can be controlled via tinted glass, blinds, curtains and canopies. One cannot forget that a lack of light can also

constitute a problem. Even if daylight reaches the workplace, it is essential to have a good illumination system (electric). Illumination : The light quantity, its colour and objects apparent colour vary according to the electric lighting type. Lighting must be fitting for the workplace and the task to be carried out. There are three principal lighting types : general lighting, localised general lighting, localised lighting (auxiliary lighting). • General lighting ensures a rather uniform illumination, as for example ceiling lights that illuminate vast zones. • Localised general lighting resorts to suspended luminaries, in addition to the ceiling lights, to increase the illumination levels for executing particular tasks. • Localised lighting (or auxiliary) increases the illumination levels above one’s immediate environment and working area. This type of lighting often allows the user to self regulate lighting and ensures him an increased flexibility. According to article R. 232-7-1 of the French Work Code “the working rooms must as much as possible benefit of a sufficient natural light”, except when the activities technical nature denies it, like film development. Office lighting must be conceived so as to avoid visual tiredness. Minimum illumination planned levels are : 120 luxes for working rooms, toilets, cloakrooms, 60 luxes for the warehouses and staircases, 40 luxes for corridors, 200 luxes for blind buildings. In order to adapt the workplace light, the best is to refer to the French standard NF X 35-103 (*), which recommends for example 500 luxes for a screen work. Lamps must be adjustable to be able to adapt to the working station. The more precise details are needed for the work, the more powerful lighting must be. The measuring unit is the lux. The French Work Code requirement of 120 luxes in the working rooms is equivalent to a 100 Watts bulb, placed two meters from the ground in a room without opening with clear walls. What must be taken into account is our capacity to adapt us to the situations, whether our place is strongly lit or under lit, but what is sure is that we are not all equal in front of these visual capacities, related to our genetic inheritance, and our cells age. The light perceptions at 20 or 60 years are not the same ones. “One of life sadnesses is that all visual performances quantified evaluations show that they decline with the age”, Kline, 1987. QUELLES SONT LES DIFFÉRENTES SOURCES DE LUMIÈRE ? • Lumière naturelle : La quantité de lumière du jour qui pénètre dans un bâtiment varie selon l’intensité et la direction des rayons du soleil, la clarté du ciel, le terrain environnant et la saison. Ainsi qu’avec les dimensions, l’orientation et la propreté des fenêtres, qui sont des facteurs importants. La quantité de lumière qui entre dans le lieu de travail peut être régulée par l’intermédiaire de verre teinté, de stores, de rideaux et de marquises. On ne peut oublier qu’un manque de lumière peut également constituer un problème. Même si la lumière du jour atteint le lieu de travail, il est essentiel d’avoir un bon système d’éclairage artificiel (électrique). • Éclairage artificiel : La quantité de lumière, la couleur de la lumière et la couleur apparente des objets varient selon le type d’éclairage électrique. L’éclairage doit être adapté au lieu de travail et à la tâche à effectuer. Il existe trois principaux types d’éclairage : l’éclairage général, l’éclairage général localisé, l’éclairage localisé (éclairage d'appoint). • L’éclairage général procure un éclairement assez uniforme, comme par exemple des plafonniers qui éclairent de vastes zones. • L’éclairage général localisé a recours à des luminaires suspendus, en plus des plafonniers, pour augmenter les niveaux d'éclairement en vue de l’exécution de tâches particulières • L’éclairage localisé (ou d'appoint) augmente les niveaux d’éclairement au-dessus de la zone de travail et de son environnement immédiat. Ce type d’éclairage permet souvent à l’utilisateur de régler lui-même l’éclairage et lui assure une flexibilité accrue.

Suivant l’ article R. 232-7-1 du code du travail français « les locaux de travail doivent autant que possible disposer d’une lumière naturelle suffisante », sauf lorsque la nature technique des activités s’y oppose, comme dans le cas de développement de films. L’éclairage des bureaux doit être conçu de manière à éviter la fatigue visuelle. Pour cela il est prévu des niveaux d’éclairement minimum, à savoir : 120 lux pour les locaux de travail, sanitaires, vestiaires, 60 lux pour les entrepôts et escaliers, 40 lux pour les couloirs, 200 lux pour les locaux aveugles. Afin d'adapter la lumière au poste, le mieux est de se référer à la norme française NF X 35103 (*), qui recommande par exemple 500 lux pour un travail sur écran. Les lampes doivent être réglables pour pouvoir s’adapter au poste de travail. Plus le travail demande de précision, plus l'éclairage doit être puissant. L’unité de mesure est le lux. Les 120 lux que le Code du travail exige dans les locaux de travail équivalent à une ampoule de 100 watts, placée à deux mètres du sol dans une pièce sans ouverture aux murs clairs. Ce dont il faut tenir compte, c’est notre capacité à nous adapter aux situations, que notre lieu soit fortement éclairé ou sous éclairé, mais une chose est certaine nous ne sommes pas tous égaux devant ces capacités visuelles, elles sont liées à notre patrimoine génétique, et à l’âge de nos cellules. La perception de la lumière à 20 ans ou à 60 ans ne sont pas les mêmes. “Une des tristesses de la vie est que toutes les évaluations chiffrées des performances visuelles montrent qu’elles déclinent avec l’âge”, Kline, 1987. Réaliser l’éclairage d'un lieu de travail, comme d'un lieu de vie, fait partie des fonctions de tout architecte, aidé, s'il n'en a pas toutes les compétences, d'un éclairagiste. Ce dernier est lui aussi un concepteur qui comme l'architecte étudiera et résoudra une problématique de l'homme dans son environnement, à partir du matériau qu’il maîtrise : la lumière. Aujourd'hui, en plus des impératifs visuels tels que les niveaux d’éclairement, les rapports de luminance, de contraste, de rendu des couleurs et de qualité spectrale, une nouvelle donne est apparue suite aux développements de la recherche sur l'homme dans son environnement visuel : l’éclairement circadien avec comme corollaire le respect des rythmes biologiques, en particulier du rythme circadien. Depuis plus d’une dizaine d'années de nombreux chercheurs ont pu démontrer le rôle que jouait le cycle jour/nuit sur l'organisme humain. Il est clair, qu'à travers nos photorécepteurs rétiniens certaines cellules ganglionnaires ne transmettent pas uniquement des informations au cortex visuel mais aussi à l'hypothalamus, vers notre horloge interne. Animal diurne, nous vivons sous la lumière naturelle et récupérons la nuit dans l'obscurité, sauf qu'aujourd'hui, même de jour, nous sommes le plus souvent en retrait de la lumière du jour et que nous continuons nos activités tard dans la nuit. Lorsque cela n'est plus occasionnel mais devient une habitude, nous nous éloignons de plus en plus de nos rythmes biologiques naturels.

OPTIMISER L'USAGE DE LA LUMIÈRE AUTANT DANS LES APPLICATIONS ARCHITECTURALES QUE THÉRAPEUTIQUES

Les chercheurs Brainard et Thapan, ont pu trouver une relation entre la sécrétion et la suppression du taux de mélatonine, dite l’hormone du sommeil, et la lumière du jour. Cette hormone est a son taux le plus bas lorsque notre corps est exposé à la lumière du jour en particulier sous les radiations comprises entre 460 et 480 nm, ce qui correspond à un rayonnement bleu (le spectre visible étant compris entre 380 nm, le violet et 760 nm, le rouge). Si ce type de rayonnement est absent ou très faible, ce qui est le cas, par exemple, avec la composition spectrale du ciel par temps gris ou en soirée ou plus encore par avec les lampes halogène, le cycle circadien ne se fera pas de manière optimale, la vigilance, l’éveil, mais aussi le sommeil réparateur ne se dérouleront pas normalement. Toutes les sources de lumière artificielles n'ont pas la même composition spectrale, la même quantité de rayonnement bleu, elles n'auront donc pas toutes la même efficacité. Comme il existe un facteur V(?) pour passer des unités énergétiques aux unités visuelles, il existe maintenant un facteur C(?), (à vrai dire plusieurs tant que la CIE - International Commission on Illumination- n’a pas encore recommandé l’un d’eux) pour passer de ces mêmes unités énergétiques aux unités d’énergies circadiennes. De nos jours, avec nos habitudes urbaines, que cela soit sur son lieu de travail ou de vie, tout être humain devra recevoir un éclairement circadien suffisant pour trouver son équilibre.

UN ÉCLAIRAGE DYNAMIQUE AVEC UN ÉCLAIREMENT PLUS FORT ET PLUS FROID, LE MATIN PAR RAPPORT AU RESTE DE LA JOURNÉE, AMÉLIORE NETTEMENT L’ATTENTION La mise en pratique de ce concept a été mise à l’épreuve une première fois dans la salle de commande de l’accélérateur de particules AGLAE [instrument qui sert à irradier avec un faisceau de particules l’objet ou l’œuvre à étudier - AGLAE du Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France - Dumortier et Ezrati, 2005], puis aujourd’hui pour l’éclairage de plusieurs locaux de ce centre, enterré dans les sous sols du jardin du Carrousel au Palais du Louvre. Ceci est le cas pour la salle des “doctorants” où la lumière du jour est quasiment absente. L’éclairage artificiel suit un programme qui permet un éclairage plus froid (plus de rayonnement bleu) et d’un niveau élevé, en début de matinée, pour varier aussi bien en température de couleur qu’en intensité tout au long de la journée. Les appareils, encastrés et regroupés de manière à simuler une verrière, sont équipés de tubes fluorescents régulés par des ballasts graduables commandés à partir d’un simple automate de programmation. D’autres bureaux, à usage individuel, mais recevant une partie de la lumière du jour à travers de grandes baies donnant sur un « saut de loup » longeant l’aile de Flore du Palais, sont équipés d’appareils avec les mêmes tubes, mais munis d’une télécommande personnelle grâce à laquelle c’est l’utilisateur qui choisit lui-même le flux et la température de couleur de son éclairage. Après plus d’une année de fonctionnement, Director’s office on first basement at the level of the “saut de loup”. de l’avis des utilisateurs, un éclairage dynamique avec un éclairement plus fort et plus froid, le matin par rapport au reste de la journée, améliore nettement leur attention. Le type de lampe fluorescente, à spectre continu, utilisé et non des triphosphores, bien que moins performant en flux, participe lui aussi pleinement à ce sentiment de bien-être. The group with more than 1600 employees is the most important lighting company in the Scandinavian countries, as well as a driving force in Europe. The company has integrated eco-design methodology in its technical department, which enables it to develop and produce energy saving lighting systems. The group is divided in four business divisions : professional, retail lighting, outdoor lighting and interior lighting. Professional includes sales of interior lighting to offices, schools, hospitals and industries. In France, Fagerhult just acquired ECL (Eclairage Conseil Lyonnais), customized “ light originator ” for hypermarkets, shops and offices. The Swede wants to use this acquisition in order to further strengthen its position in the European Lighting Industry and to create a platform for growth in the important French market. “It is our strategy to be among the top three lighting systems providers in Europe through profitable growth. With this acquisition we further strengthen our position in the important French market”, says Per Borgvall, CEO Fagerhult. A bath of “anti-blues” light Un bain de lumière « anti-blues » au bureau ou chez soi ? at the office or at home ? The least we can say it is that summer 2007 in Western Europe will not have enabled us to fill with a sunlight so necessary to reload the “accumulators” of our body, consequently the blues certainly will touch us more quickly than usual. In order to preserve its internal equilibrium, our body needs every day a source of light of at least 2.000 luxes (illumination unit), during 2 hours. As of the beginning of September, the luminosity falls from 100.000 to 1.500 luxes, to reach down 500 luxes inside the houses in winter. For some of us, the body does not manage to regulate itself because of an anomaly located between the retina where the light signal penetrates and the pineal gland which manages the circadian rhythms and secretes the melatonin, true “sleep hormone”. The secretion of this hormone is normally inhibited during the day and is stimulated when the night comes. However, these people have a high rate of melatonin during the day, which induces a permanent tiredness feeling. In France, 2/3 of the population feels this tiredness. More than half have mood disorders and a difficult waking up. These symptoms are characteristic of a “seasonal blues”.

Le moins que l’on puisse dire c’est que l’été 2007 en Europe de l’ouest ne nous aura pas permis de faire le « plein » de lumière du soleil si nécessaire pour recharger « les accus » de notre organisme, en conséquence le blues va certainement nous toucher plus rapidement qu’à l’accoutumée. Notre organisme pour conserver son équilibre interne, a besoin tous les jours d’une source lumineuse d’au moins 2 000 lux (unité d’éclairement lumineux), pendant 2 heures. Dès le début septembre, la luminosité chute de 100 000 à 1 500 lux, pour atteindre 500 lux à l’intérieur des habitations en hiver. Chez certains, l’organisme ne parvient pas à se réguler à cause d’une anomalie située entre la rétine où pénètre le signal lumineux et la glande pinéale qui gère les rythmes circadiens et sécrète la mélatonine, véritable « hormone du sommeil ». La sécrétion de cette hormone est normalement inhibée pendant la journée et stimulée dès la tombée de la nuit. Or, ces personnes affichent un taux élevé de mélatonine pendant la journée, ce qui déclenche une sensation de fatigue permanente. En France, 2/3 de la population ressent cette fatigue. Plus de la moitié ont des troubles de l’humeur et un réveil difficile. Ces symptômes sont caractéristiques d’un « blues saisonnier ».

But how to locate this lack ? Meeting of the European Networks in Occupational Health & Safety At European level the networking of organisations and institutions in the field of occupational health and safety is very varied. As part of the A+A Congress, Basi 2007 will be offering these networks the chance to exchange information on their work and discuss topics of common interest. EMT multifield method for analysing the working stations brings to the works managers a thinking support allowing the improvement of their processes running. In coherence with the ISO 11064, EMT recommends to center projects around the Man and therefore his work situation. This is how EMT got the mission to study the evolution of Fos sur Mer site cleaning control. The customer expectation was “to lead the line control to the state of the art” and therefore to optimize the production. This being said, one will imagine immediately a brutal search for productivity gain. In a centralized supervision system however, the operators are KEY and the works managers of today know that this improvement is optimal only in a global vision : productivity optimization, quality optimization, teams optimization, working conditions optimization, buildings optimization, safety optimization … Here is a multi-factor and complex problem far away from a primary financial vision.

Methodology Therefore, EMT has carried out a complete analysis of the existing situation based on its comtel® methodological grid. The mission perimeter concerned the 7 line operator stations divided in 6 works buildings. The questioning related to a feasible optimization to 5 stations divided into two control rooms. By taking the operator as a starting point, EMT describes the tasks, then counts all its tools (uses, operational implementing, maintenance), sticks then to the definition of necessary spaces (volumes, environments, moves, local life, etc.) and finally, without any insulated system, identifies, qualifies and quantifies the relationships. This activity analysis produces a data base mixing the ergonomist’s and the engineer’s sciences, dense and rich, but little “ speaking ”. The designer emphasizes it with the chart allowing to dynamically “visualize” the work situation. Because of this, it appeared the time devoted to additional tasks (in green) was important. Therefore a specific station apart from posted teams was created.

It is then possible to project oneself in the future. In team work with the customers, EMT helps to imagine a reorganization or a heavy process investment impact on men’s activity, and in certain cases to even imagine new work situations created by innovating technologies. In the studied case, by crossing the geography with the work “quantity”, one sees (EXISTANT/EXISTING) that the operator is practically half time sitting at his control unit and half time on the line (with all the disadvantages that it implies - ceaseless outward journeys and returns especially). After optimization, he works most of the time sitting at his working station (lower Bar of graph PROJETE). If necessary, through Design Management, EMT applies the designer’s synthetic way of thinking to the works managers values search or directing axes, allowing them to further see and imagine. In this case, EMT requested their creativity by taking as a starting point the definition of each word, LINE/LIGNE, STATE/ETAT, and ART.

The following brainstorming sample shows : • We are in a “bad state”, but we do want to go towards a “good state”. • To evolve we must act on our processes, our knowledge and our rules. • But the “state” is unstable (gas, liquid, solid…). • Therefore, to maintain the “good state”, we must stabilize our processes, maintain our knowledge on the level, and take care that our rules are observed. The practical repercussions of this work were, as for the knowledge for example, the installation of a training scheme and of a sharing of the operators’ knowledge. For the works manager, this diagnosis work has no interest if it is followed by a realizable operational solutions prescription. Let us recall that a SPIE/EMT consultant is an Ergonomist-Designer. At this stage the ergonomist therefore gives way to the designer as for the works buildings design (interior architecture, lighting studies, thermal study…) and their technical furniture design.

The operators’ project acceptance constitutes the intervention success starting point. Therefore, EMT always recommends a participative involvement : repeatedly, a working group validates all the stages of the mission. A Project Group consisting in the operation bearers and the SPIE consultant piloting the project is constituted. Representatives of the end-users join the PG to constitute a Working Group. Their role is to describe to their colleagues the works in progress and to forward their remarks. The WG can be extended to associated guests (Hygiene and security commission members, occupational doctor, etc…). It will repeatedly validate all the mission stages. In this way, the project will become their project. “We refuse to be outside contributors. The EMT Consultant must “ immerse ” himself in the company receiving him. He goes on the ground, shares the posted teams life, day or night. Therefore a confidence climate is established with “ the base ”, which favours a true team work necessary for a constructive compromises search”. EMT ergonomics-design project management methodology is put to the test in very varied applications: Industry, motorway, tramway, shipbuilding, aeronautics. Marking the social dimension of the creator, design diverts a dehumanized industrial world to put aesthetics at the greatest number’s comfort service. The ergonomist endeavours to dissect human work to improve its conditions. It is clear that both trades work towards the same end. This is why it is natural to associate them in an Ergonomist-Designer single trade. To make these two ideals useful, it is necessary to anchor them in reality and to use the engineer’s words to share the same language as the works managers. Therefore we hope that our ant work privileging humanity sometimes gives the work world heart. www.spie.com

ERGONOME – DESIGNER : « Donner de l’âme au monde du travail ». Par EMT service de SPIE Ile de France Nord Ouest spécialisé dans l’assistance technique au management d’exploitation.

La méthode pluridisciplinaire d’analyse des postes de travail d’EMT apporte aux managers d’exploitation un support de réflexion permettant l’amélioration de l’exploitation de leurs procédés. En cohérence avec l’ISO 11064, EMT recommande de centrer les projets autour de l’Homme et donc de sa situation de travail. C’est ainsi que EMT a eu la mission d’étude de l’évolution de la conduite du décapage du site de Fos sur Mer. L’attendu du client était « d’amener la conduite de ligne à l’état de l’art » donc d’optimiser la production. Ceci dit, on imaginera, tout de suite, une recherche brutale de gain de productivité. Or dans un système à supervision centralisée les opérateurs sont CLE et les managers d’exploitation d’aujourd’hui savent que cette amélioration n’est optimale que dans une vision globale : optimisation de la productivité, optimisation de la qualité, optimisation des équipes, optimisation des conditions de travail, optimisation des locaux, optimisation de la sécurité… Problème multifactoriel et complexe bien éloigné d’une vision financière primaire.

Méthodologie EMT a donc procédé à une analyse complète de la situation existante en s’appuyant sur sa grille méthodologique comtel®. Le périmètre de la mission s’étendait sur les 7 postes opérateurs de ligne répartis dans 6 locaux d’exploitation. L’interrogation portait sur une optimisation faisable à 5 postes répartis en deux salles de commande. En prenant l’opérateur pour point de départ, EMT décrit les tâches, puis recense tous ses outils (usages, mise en œuvre opérationnelle, maintenance), s’attache à la définition des espaces nécessaires (volumes, ambiances, déplacements, locaux vie, etc.) et enfin, aucun système n’étant laissé isolé, le relationnel est identifié, qualifié et quantifié. Cette analyse d’activité produit une « base de données » mixant les sciences de l’ergonome et de l’ingénieur, dense et riche, mais peu « parlante ». Le designer va lui apporter la force de la représentation graphique qui permet de « visualiser » dynamiquement la situation de travail. C’est ainsi qu’il est apparu une importance du temps consacré aux tâches annexes (en vert). Il a donc été créé un poste spécifique hors équipe postée.

Il est alors possible de se projeter dans l’avenir. En travail d’équipe avec les donneurs d’ordre, EMT aide a imaginer l’impact d’une réorganisation ou d’un investissement lourd sur le process sur l’activité des Hommes, voire dans certains cas imaginer de nouvelles situations de travail créées par des technologies innovantes. Dans le cas illustré, croisant la géographie avec la « quantité » de travail, on voit (EXISTANT) que l’opérateur est pratiquement à moitié temps assis à son poste de commande et à moitié temps sur la ligne (avec tous les inconvénients que cela implique – allers et retours incessants notamment). Après optimisation il travaille essentiellement assis à son poste de travail (Barre inférieure du graphe PROJETE).

Cette rubrique est ouverte à tous les ergonomes travaillant en Europe. La rédaction se réserve le droit de publier ou non les textes et photos reçus. Les documents ne sont pas restitués. Au besoin, par le Design Management, EMT met le mode de pensée synthétique du designer au service de la recherche des valeurs ou des axes directeurs des responsables d’exploitation, les aidant à « sortir le nez du guidon » de leur quotidien pour voir plus loin et imaginer. Dans le cas présent, EMT a sollicité leur créativité en prenant comme point de départ la définition de chaque mot CONDUITE, LIGNE, ETAT, et ART. L’échantillon suivant de réflexion autour de l’état illustre : • Nous sommes dans un « mauvais état » mais nous voulons aller vers un « bon état ». • Pour évoluer nous devons agir sur nos procédés, nos connaissances et nos règles. • Mais « l’état » est instable (gazeux, liquide, solide…). • Donc pour maintenir le « bon état » nous devons stabiliser nos procédés, maintenir nos connaissances à niveau, et veiller à ce que nos règles soient appliquées. Les « retombées » pratiques de ce travail ont été, pour le chapitre connaissances par exemple, la mise en place d’un programme de formation et de partage des savoirs des opérateurs. Pour le manager d’exploitation, ce travail de diagnostic n’a d’intérêt que s’il est accompagné de la prescription de solutions opérationnelles réalisables. Rappelons que le consultant EMT de SPIE est un Ergonome-Designer. A ce stade l’ergonome laisse ainsi place au designer pour ce qui est de la conception des locaux d’exploitation (architecture d’intérieur, études d’éclairage, étude thermique…) et le design de leurs mobiliers techniques.

L’acceptation du projet par les opérateurs constitue le point de départ du succès de l’intervention. EMT préconise donc toujours un accompagnement participatif : itérativement, un groupe de travail valide toutes les étapes de la mission. Un Groupe Projet est constitué par les porteurs de l’opération et le consultant Spie pilote du projet. Des représentants des utilisateurs finaux s’associent au GP pour constituer un Groupe de Travail. Ils ont pour mission de décrire à leurs collègues les travaux en cours et de faire remonter leurs remarques. Le GT peut être élargi à des invités associés (CHSCT, médecin du travail, etc…). Il validera itérativement toutes les étapes de la mission. C’est ainsi que le projet deviendra leur projet. « Nous nous refusons à être des intervenants extérieurs. Le consultant EMT doit se « fondre dans le paysage » de l’entreprise qui l’accueille. Il va sur le terrain, partage la vie des équipes postées, de jour comme de nuit. Ainsi un climat de confiance s’instaure avec « la base », ce qui favorise un vrai travail d’équipe nécessaire à la recherche des compromis constructifs ». La méthodologie de conduite de projet en ergonomie-design d’EMT est en permanence éprouvée dans des applications très variées : Industriel, autoroutier, tramway, constructions navales, aéronautique. Marquant la dimension sociale du créateur, le Design détourne un monde industriel déshumanisé pour mettre l’esthétique au service du confort du plus grand nombre. L’ergonome s’attache à décortiquer le travail de l’Homme pour en améliorer les conditions. On voit que les deux métiers poursuivent le même but. Il était tout naturel de les associer en un seul et même métier ErgonomeDesigner. Pour rendre ces deux idéaux utiles il faut les ancrer dans la réalité et utiliser les termes de l’ingénieur pour partager la même langue que les responsables d’exploitation. C’est ainsi que nous espérons, par un travail de fourmi privilégiant l’humanité donner parfois de l’âme au monde du travail. www.spie.com
