Summer 2015 “If you can’t be yourself, you’re nobody.” -Unknown Throughout the production of this issue, I’ve come to realize the importance of breaking down societal norms that hold us back, and prevent future growth.

Issues such as race, gender, and equality are more relevant than they ever were before. The tag line of this issue is,“In the beginning it was all black and white.”

Once it was the societal norm not to question the in between colors. Now, in a world of fifty shades of grey, we can’t help but wonder.

We’re proud to present a whirlwind of rising talents such as Christopher Mark, Joshua McLeod, Erin Williams, as well as feature photographers Taylor Miller and Matt Slade. Taking over the art scene, no doubt, these talents are on the rise to fame. After following Christopher Mark, @realartwork, on Instagram for months I was finally able to put a face to the name.

Known for his painting of Wiz Khalifa, wife at the time, Amber Rose, twerks in front of his art work.

We focus on the idea of blurring gender roles to create a better and more accepting world for all. Cover star, and feature model Kharlybia Roane is an advocate for equality. She takes a stand against violence in this issue of Dazed.

She gives zero fucks as she bares all to make her point to the world. You’ll never look at the issue of violence, and peace the same. It’s guaranteed to make your jaw drop.

In an issue of talking about twerking, internationally known musical talents, questioning gender roles, and making a stand to violence, we couldn’t help but serve it to you. Is that enough for you?

Many famous music artists have bought your work- can you tell me how it all started?

What lead you to SCAD as an emerging artist?

When I was really young, I would draw on pieces of paper, and my mom would sit with me and try to guess what I was drawing. I think that was when I determined that was the direction I wanted to go in. In high school, I took APs for 2D and I had a teacher that didn’t favor SCAD and told me not to go, I think that was when I decided that I wanted to come here the most.

When I was 16 years old, I’d been doing a few paintings and one of them being Wiz Khalifa, and it was just for class. My friend told me that he was playing in a very small local venue. Basically, my dad and I just packed up the truck one night and walked up and knocked on his tour van. This was really before he had any of his big major hits so he was pretty approachable at this point in time.

I showed him my work and he was really digging on them. He asked if I was staying for the show, but I wasn’t old enough at the time. He just said “F**ck that you’re going to come back stage with us.” At that time he didn’t purchase from me, but promised he would once he had the money to do it. So I

What are your main influences and driving forces in your work?

Other types of art mainly influence me. I respect the Masters and stuff but they don’t inspire me as much as a certain skill in an art I don’t understand. I don’t like going into a painting knowing exactly what I am going to do. I like the way musicians develop a composition to a song and that’s always the way I want to approach my work.

Is there a certain process or technique that you like incorporate into everything?

At this point, I’m pretty experimental, but texture has become a really big thing for me recently. The three-dimensionality of texture is one thing that I like to incorporate as much as possible.

kept doing work of him and eventually I got a phone call from his manager saying that Wiz had just bought this condo in Los Angeles and all the walls were blank and I needed to fill them. They bought about 7 of them.

So what was your immediate reaction to Amber Rose twerking in front of your painting?

My first reaction was to show my dad because I knew he would get a kick out of it because I didn’t even know. My friend called me at 2 in the morning to go on Instagram because it was trending. My dad actually ended up showing it to my grandmother and she just didn’t know how to take it.

No actually nobody did. It’s funny because my stuff has been in a couple things, but I feel at one point in time people will start to put the pieces together and realize that I actually did that. That’s what I am hoping for, that people will put the pieces together.

Actually, there was an article written about Juicy J in Fader Magazine and two of my pieces are in the background of the centerfold pictures and I didn’t get credited for it. I talked to a few people recently about getting my name on it and they figured it should get put in there for the archives.

Is there any other artists that you’ve worked with to create paintings for?

A while ago I sold to Kid Cudi and that whole experience was pretty wild meeting him because it was very brief. I met him through his dj because him and his dj bought a bunch of paintings. This was all when Man on Moon came out and that was probably one of my favorite albums at the time.

If you could describe yourself as dazed or confused, which would you choose?

Probably confused. At this point in life, the future is so uncertain and I guess that can be confusing.

You’ve become quite popular in the past year.

Do you think people’s attitude towards you has changed with your success?

No, they know Victor Alexander but they don’t know who is behind it. So not much has changed.

What is one thing you wish you did differently with starting Victor Alexander?

I wish I had been more patient in perfecting my first design of the first collection.

What is something we might not know about you?

What is one thing you wish never became a trend in fashion?

It was interesting and a bit challenging. I knew his aesthetic was very busy and mine was streamlined. There was a trial and error. I gave him swatches and a sample bag and we were able to work it out.

Your collaboration with Tommy Lee had a very Keith Herringesque aesthetic. How was it like working together with your two different aesthetics?

In 10 years, I see Victor Alexander in a brick and mortar store in Los Angeles, San Diego and New York City.

Gender Neutral fashion has been apparent since the early days. In the 1920’s, Coco Chanel tailored menswear pieces for women. Katharine Hepburn was one of the pioneers for androgynous menswear in the 1940’s. Ruth Morley, the costume Designer for Annie Hall, dressed Diane Keaton in full on menswear tailoring. However, gender neutrality in fashion has really come to the forefront this year from designers such as Public School and Hood by Air and it is not leaving any time soon. It’s not only women though that are dressing more neutral, but so are the men.

With the gender shift in society, designers have drawn to a more neutral route with their designs. Many men and women today identify with a different gender or a different association to their physical presence.

Whether you’re a girl and want to dress like a guy or vice versa with a boy wanting to dress like a girl, there are options to accommodate those interests.

Designers such as Acne and APC have made similar silhouette options that are identical for both men and women.

Both Menswear and women’s wear have meshed together this season on the runways from collections such as Gucci AW 2015. Gender natural fashion is very apparent and the notion between what is masculine and feminine is slowly dissolving.

It all initially started with sportswear. Men and women could buy and wear unisex sweats, hoodies, and leggings from brands such as American Apparel, Adidas and Nike. This sparked a movement.

Futuristic Goth

The not so new trend that is everywhere yet again and a trend that does not need an explanation is the gothic trend. Seen on Jennifer Lawrence, and Lorde this goth trend marries the effortless wear of sport apparel with luxury materials.

It tends to focus on menswear, which is a huge emerging market for menswear-inspired styles and silhouettes for women. So, this gothic trend we are seeing is definitely something women can get into as well.

Textiles that play a prevalent role in this trend are mesh, moisturewicking fabrics, and prosthetics.

Basically, think traditional goth gone body-conscious.

High-performance sportswear is key for nailing the goth look, but inspiration also comes from sci-fi and cyberpunk, which adds to the futuristic element.

Longline sports jerseys, mesh inserts, wet-look fabrics and chunky, perspex accessories will all help create the punky, scifi feel. Black is the center of the color palette, but silver and white accents can be added to complete the streamlined space-age feel.

Going full goth is a bold statement.

Although, hints and specific aspects to the trend such as metallic make-up or mesh-panelled t-shirts are an easy way to incorporate it into everyday style.

Stop the Violence Violence has, and always will be detrimental to society, and the world as a whole. This is the main reason that understanding the importance of peace is vital to the growth and progress of humanity. Peace is defined as,�freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility.� Peace should be highlighted as a central theme in school curriculum, religious sermons, political agendas, and everything in between. We as people, have a choice to either embrace this virtue, or destroy our enemies. War represents destruction and agony; while peace represents progress and happiness.

People need to realize that taking action to emphasize the importance of understanding one another and working together is in societies best interest. Peace is a topic that all people should be able to relate to, and work towards achieving a common goal.

Peace is the answer to so many issues that case pain, and suffering in the world. Instead of rioting, and expressing feelings of disappointment and outrage in a violent manner, we must join together and fight the fight against violence.

Violence causes more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide every year.

Instead of investing on fighting the problem, we need to look at these issues through a different lens and fight to prevent them. “The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government.

The stated mission of the Peace Corps includes providing technical assistance, helping people outside the United States to understand American culture, and helping Americans to understand the cultures of other countries.� By joining programs, and supporting these types of organizations are how we are going to come together as one.

Peace is the only answer, and it is not an option anymore. Peace brings the opportunity to relate to others with understanding, acceptance, and an un biased opinion. It is the cornerstone of our survival, and without it we are nothing. The human race can decide to destroy ourselves, and everything we have worked for, or we can be part of the solution.
