Start prefresh: “... where the biggest profits are.” Jan Sas details his protocol: FIRST CALF HEIFERS: “Spray 3 to 4 evenly-distributed vertical sprays on every quarter. Start daily 3 to 4 days pre-calving; continue 2x/day for 3 days post-calving.” MULTI-LACTATION COWS: “Spray 3 to 4 evenly-distributed vertical sprays on every quarter. Start daily 5 to 6 days pre-calving; continue 2x/day for 5 days post-calving.” 1) Hold nozzle 4 to 6 inches away. 2) Separate quarter from leg. 3) Move bottle in mostly downward sweeping motion while pulling nozzle trigger. 4) Apply 3 to 5 pulls per quarter, depending on udder size. For fresh animals, spray all quarters.
“Heifers are more relaxed with better milk flow and our SCC average is 110,000. We protect our udder quality with the product that gets results. Udder Comfort™ is what we use routinely on fresh cows and heifers,” says Randy Brubacher (above, center) of Two-County Farm, Morgantown, Pa. “Udder Comfort is an easy to use and excellent management tool for the dairy. We’ve seen it work on SCC,” observes Dr. Doug Evans (above, left) of Sunny Acres Farm, Georgetown, N.Y., home-base for his veterinary practice. “We start coating the udders of prefresh heifers with Udder Comfort a week before they calve,” Dr. Evans explains. For Jan Sas (above, right) of St. Davids, the decision to start prefresh came down to the return on investment (ROI).
“In addition to a 75% decrease in rate of new infections, alongside lower SCC. We banked on 8% more milk production in our 2-year-olds from improved peak milk yield,” Jan says about the protocol he detailed (above) for a 1000-cow dairy in Newfoundland. “That is where the biggest profits are. We figured a minimum 15-to-1 ROI, using an average California milk price to convert gains.”
