“I was so grateful for Udder Comfort.” — Wendy Schmidt

WOODMOHR JERSEYS Wendy and Jon Schmidt, BLOOMER, WISCONSIN 40 Reg. Jerseys: 30 EX, 10 VG; AVG 91 points Wendy Schmidt with NASCO Type and Production RHA 19,000 — SCC 100 to 125,000 winner GB Jade Diva of Woodmohr EX 94. Awards received for milk quality Wendy Schmidt and her Woodmohr Jersey ‘girls’ know the comfort of a passerby, when a distracted driver tipped their trailer heading home to Bloomer, Wis., from the 2012 World Dairy Expo. “Jersey cows are like people,” she says. “It took us all awhile to get over the trauma. Carrie Mess (Dairy Carrie) was one of the people who stopped to help us that night. She gave us 10 tubes of Udder Comfort™ and we put it on all the legs and udders. That was the first thing we did. “When we got home, we continued to put it on 3x/day, going through 12 to 15 more bottles. Those cows now have the lowest SCC in the herd and no issues in any quarters whatsoever,” Wendy recalls a year later during the 2013 Expo. “I used to just use Udder Comfort samples sporadically. But now I use it faithfully on all fresh cows and any cow with swelling because I know what it can do. We rarely need to treat a quarter now.

“These cows are my very life, and I was so grateful for Udder Comfort. If we had not used it on ‘Jade Diva’, I don’t know what would have happened to her. She had a lot of injury and swelling being on that tipped trailer right next to the one cow that died that night. “It was amazing to bring her back to Expo a year later and have her win third in production and receive the 2013 NASCO Type and Production Award.”

100% ROUGHWAY 100% PUREBRED REGISTERED HOLSTEINS M I L K

BACK IN THE PAST... Finchway... Norwalk, Warren County, IA

Where I was born... Boone County, IA

Pictured here is the 45-stall stanchion barn in Boone, Iowa where I was born in 1944, and then a picture of me with my first 100% purebred Holstein calf when I was around six years old. I think the sire of the calf was Mancryco Governor Jupiter, that is about all I can really remember at that time of my life. We milked 40 to 45 cows even at that time, and I started helping milk cows at that time. I began learning to milk four cows every night with a DeLaval bucket milker. We put milk in five and ten gallon milk cans. My dad had bought four purebred Holstein cows, and that started my life with purebred registered Holsteins. I gave it a lot of respect at that time in my young life. I love the grade cows also, but the purebred set the stage in my life and it has ever since. I remember the National Holstein Convention was held in Des Moines, Iowa, June 4 - 7, 1951, the 66th annual convention of America. I have the 1951 Iowa Holstein Herald, and Chris Miller was Iowa Holstein President. He said, “It is our hope and desire that by coming to this 66th convention, we may again improve and see a vision. May we always, through the adoption of rules and regulations, with the views of the common man in mind, and by placing service above self, do our best to keep the Holstein-Friesian Association of America the greatest in the world.” S. B. Hall was National President, and Robert H. Rumler was Assistant Executive Secretary. And then in 1954 we moved from Boone and bought a farm in Norwalk, Iowa, a farm of 160 acres. (Only one dairy herd in Boone County in 2013)

Here is a list of Iowa Holstein purebred breeders who really inspired me back 30 to 40 years ago: Hy-Seen Holsteins, Elmer Paper & Family, Stockton, IA Eggink Holsteins, Harold Eggink, Sibley, IA Typlus Farm, Morris Miller, Clarion IA Ludwig Holsteins, Clarence Ludwig, Breda, IA Ted-Dear Holsteins, Ted Becker & Family, Center Point, IA GGG Holsteins, Roger Gerlach & Family, St. Ansgar, IA Villisca Holsteins, Tom McAlpin, Villisca, IA Stardell Holsteins, Hadwen Kleiss, Fredericksburg, IA Clover Run Holsteins, William Jungling, Parkersburg, IA Marcellus & Dave Broghamer, Decorah, IA Moondale Farm, Vernice & Dan Moon, Monona, IA Let’s take a look at the World Dairy Expo 2013. My, my, a lot of great, great cattle. There are six dairy breeds, seven now with the Red & Whites. But take a look at the Grand Champion Milking Shorthorn. She was a great, great cow, but she was not what you call a purebred Milking Shorthorn. Her sire was from the red Holstein breed, a crossbred cow to say the least. How sick can the dairy breeds get? This has been going on for some time. The Holsteins are in the percentage thing the last few years also, and this is sad, sad enough in many, many ways. Maybe the World Dairy Expo should add another class called the crossbred class and have eight classes. The beef breed has lots of crossbreds. I have received calls and letters from all over the country the past four years, about what has been taking place with the Holstein percentage thing. People have told me that they have bought percentage Holsteins that were bred to a percentage bull, and also bred to purebred bulls also, and some of their cattle would have a calf that looked a lot like some beef breed or some other dairy breed of some sort. The National Holstein Association has opened the door for so many crooked things to happen, and it is not right for the purebred breeder to have to put up with this kind of thing, to say the least. Maybe some purebred breeders should go in the back door and check things out and change things around and put a stop to the BS that is taking place with their different departments. A very small thing, compared to what is taking place in our nation’s capitol, D.C. Money talks, in the wrong way a lot of the time. I have gone to a few Holstein dispersals around three different states, and they are advertised as registered Holstein dispersals. When I get there, there might be 3 or 4 purebreds and the rest are percentage animals. They are good cows, but still grades to me. So if I see an advertised registered dispersal, I will call ahead to see what the deal is. Now you want to look for one that says purebred Holstein dispersal and not just registered, but maybe you still should call. Hope for the best for the Markvale Holsteins’ Clarence & Wendy Markus Family, Beachville, Ontario, Canada, after their barn fire this past summer and some loss of livestock. I pray rebuilding goes well for you, it takes time. I have received the Farmshine paper out of Pennsylvania for the last 3 years. It is a really, really good paper, with dairy news from the East, a lot like the Dairy Star that we receive here in the Midwest. A lot of family life is covered in both papers.

Norwalk, Iowa. It began another new life for me. I went to a country school through eighth grade, to the Norwalk High School for two years, and then Lincoln High School in Des Moines, where I graduated in 1962. Family life was very, very bumpy after that, many things took place that should not have happened, but they did. Here are two photos of the milk barn at Norwalk. The real nice one is what it looked like just before I left Norwalk in 1987. It was a 40-stanchion barn with eight big box stalls, and another barn had 14 stanchions, also. The other photo of the barn was just taken in 2013; it is falling apart, to say the least. In 1960 we put in a Jamesway barn cleaner and a DeLaval bulk tank and a pipeline milker. It worked out really nice, and the government did not pay for it like many things that are taking place today in 2013. After moving to Norwalk, in four years we would sell a few grade animals and buy purebred Holsteins to replace them, and in that time frame we had all 100% purebred Holsteins. Here is a list of 100% purebred bulls that play a very large role in the great cows of today in the show ring and in the milk barn, as well. What shows up today is what we had in the past. What we had 50 years ago, shows up years later from generations back. Just like in people. Say a married couple have three or four children, sometimes one of the children you wonder where he or she came from, and yet it has the same mother and father. But you take a look at the generations behind the mother or father and you will see where the child picks up his or her looks etc. The same thing with animals of all kinds. This is true in the ET program as well, and maybe even more so. There are many, many people today who do not understand that, even in our so-called college educated people of all ages. Watch out for the genomic times, in many, many ways you will not hear about all the bad things, but you will hear about the good much, much faster. (Don’t laugh too hard, people.) I have talked with him over the years by phone, and have done a little business with him. He has been a very honest person with me and real good person to talk with about purebred Holsteins, and when he had that great, great, Boulet Charles daughter. And then it was really, really good to hear that Jason Danhof of Waukon, IA was the A.C. Whitie Thomson Award winner this past year. Jason helped with my Roughway Dispersal in April, and he was a super, super person with the cows and a very helpful, comfortable person to be around.

The third photo is where I am showing my first purebred Holstein calf in Indianola, Iowa; I had my back turned in the photo. It was my first district Holstein show to show at. At this show is where I met a very helpful man, Robert Heilman, Iowa’s Holstein regional representative. Before that I also met a very nice man, William Langel, an HFAA program director. But Robert really, really got me going with the purebred Holsteins and really gave me a jump start. He came to our farm, Finchway Dairy, and we talked about many different things and looked over our herd of purebred Holsteins of around 45 cows. He said to me, “Larry, you should start classifying your herd for type,” and Robert really got me going from that time on.We were using our own herd bulls at that time. When Robert was here, the milking herd was around 70% from homebred bulls and the rest were AI animals, and within a year we started classifying. We already were testing on DHIA; 39 cow herd average was running 17,324 3.8 656F, and average age was 5 years 6 months. And then, just twenty miles from me, is Moondale Farm, Vernice & Dan Moon, Monona, IA.

later, we had 8 EX, 19 VG, and 12 GP, with a BAA 105.9%. That was all animals, not just 90% of them like they do today. And about nine years later, before I moved to Castalia, my herd of 41, all 100% purebred Holsteins, averaged 18,563 3.8 738F, with average age of six years one month. Classification was 15 EX, 17 VG, 9 GP, BAA 108.8%, again all animals, not just 90% of them like they do in today’s world. At that time around 80% of the cows were from our homebred bulls, one an EX No-Na-Me Fond Matt son, and the other an EX-91 Ideal Fury Reflector son from an EX-92 Romandale Reflection Marquis dam. Also back then, another Holstein man came to our place from Huntley, Illinois. Bob Miller, known as Mil-R-Mor Holsteins, used to take photos of cattle at that time, and he took around seven animals that day. He really gave me a lot more spunk in the purebred Holstein cow business, and just this past summer I was at his 80th birthday party on the farm at Orangeville, IL. It was super, super nice. Bob has also been at my last two Roughway Dairy sales.

This photo was taken at the Iowa State Fair in 1977 and shows the booth display I had with my show string of 100% purebred Holsteins. It was about the last year of showing by myself as Finchway Registered Holsteins. At Finchway Dairy we ran a 65-70% heifer calving rate from the herd of 45 by using a herd bull, and we could sell around 15 heifers each year around the country, and many of those dairymen didn’t even test or classify at that time. We had a vet there for the herd maybe 4 or 5 times a year. Calves, heifer or bulls, were given raw cow milk for 21⁄2 to 3 months, and a farm egg three times a week. At the most we might lose one or two calves a year. A very simple way of life. I have sold raw milk before, all I did was have a signed paper by the persons who were buying the milk that they stand all the risk of anything that happens from the milk from my dairy, what more do you need? I have done it before back over 35 years ago, and people from Des Moines would even come out to my place in Norwalk with a doctor’s permit to get raw milk, and they would have their own container with them. (Only four dairy herds in Warren County in 2013)

Maybe I should ask the Cattle Connection to call Washington, D.C. and see if they could get me a government grant for all the talking I am doing in this ad. Or maybe even the National Holstein office, or maybe the Iowa Holstein office. Because they say the bigger you are, the more volume you have, the cheaper it gets.

Back about 1973, I went to Crescent Beauty Farm in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin and met Allen Hetts and saw his great herd of cows. It was really great. I was on my way back home from the World Dairy Expo.

Roughway Holsteins

100% PUREBRED REGISTERED HOLSTEINS M I L K

... AND THE PRESENT TIME Roughway... Castalia, Winneshiek County, IA

Here is a photo of my dairy barn at Roughway Dairy that I moved to in 1987. 170 acres and a 40 tie-stall barn with rubber mats in the cement, and a manure pit. The barn was built in 1886 and has a lot of wooden pegs in the structure today. One of my points of this ad is that if you take care of a barn, it will last a very long time in most cases. The same is with a dairy animal; if you breed them right and feed them right, and not confine them all the time, there will be a lot less disease and fewer health problems of all kinds. The 26 years that I have lived here, there have been many, many purebred Holstein cows go through this old barn from the age of 10 years to 19 years old, many 2E, 3E, 4E, 5E cows and lifetimes from 125,000 to 270,000 milk. 58 Excellent cows and many Gold Medal Dams and Dams of Merit were bred or developed here at Roughway. I have always been called the old cow man. I love old cows, to say the least. To me, for a cow to show their true type and see how good they really are, they must have 4 calves to prove this to me. Milk and type together, true for all dairy breeds. I would sell about three yearlings or calves every year at registered consignment sales around the country, and in return buy an older cow that I thought could go Excellent, or was Excellent at the time, depending on her breakdown, background, etc, and would keep the milk flow going for me. My herd average would jump around from 20,000 lbs up to 24,500 lbs, depending on how many older cows I had around dry a long time or long lactations. In my lifetime at Finchway and Roughway, I have had 37 different classifiers. At one time I had 41 EX cows on the farm. BAA was from 110.3 to 115.6%, but that was just 90% of the herd, not 100% like it should be. Whatever! The last 24 years I went all AI breeding. If I was to do anything differently the last 24 years, I wish I would have stayed with using a herd bull or two and about 10% AI. Using all AI, my heifer calf rate went down to 30% and I had a harder time getting cows with calf, and that led to more vet bills and AI bills. Yes, you have to have the right setup for a bull or two to be around. That would not have been a problem. My own bull or two would have given me more self respect in the life of the 100% registered Holstein. (Only 114 dairy herds in Winneshiek County in 2013)

One thing I have tried doing is to keep all artificial preservatives etc from the cattle and the shots of most kinds given by vets, and all the BS, I call it, that feed dealers try pushing on you.

Classifying results on cattle I sold before my sale, and ones sold sale time, that I know of. Before sale: 2 GP-83 & 84 2Y; 2 VG-85 & 86 2Y; 1 VG-87 3Y; 1 EX-91 4Y; 1 EX-93 6Y. Animals sold at my dispersal: 2 GP-83, 2 VG-85 2Y; 1 VG88 4Y; 1 EX-90 5Y; 1 EX-91 3Y. 2013 shows: Two were in the top half of their class, of 22 to 31 in class. One Winter Yrlg was Jr Champion of Junior Show at South Dakota State Fair. One Winter Yrlg was Jr Champion of Open Show at South Dakota State Fair. Six heifer calves have been born that I know of. Top milk record made after my sale has been 34,000 milk. One VG-88 cow was lost to a very bad udder injury. Two cows that I was contending bidder on years back that turned out very outstanding later in their lives were D-R-A August 4E-96, when she was sold through the World Premier Dairy Expo sale. I think she sold for around $7,800. The other was Wapa Bootmaker Mandy 3E-96. She sold at the Kentucky National Sale for about $4,800. I was at each sale at that time.

T Y P E

Today more & more dairies of all sizes, mostly the very large ones, say their cows are averaging 90 to 100 lbs and 30,000 plus herd averages. This is great, but the average age of the herd, in let’s say a 300 to 2000 cow herd, might be 3 to 31⁄2 years old, and 70% will be two year olds, 25% will be three year olds, and 5% older. The cattle are confined in a so-called really, really nice building setup, and a vet is there sometimes every day of the week, and a hoof doctor there once a week also. If the animal gets below 80 lbs of milk and not with calf after 4 months of calving, they are out the door. When a person talks about their herd average, they should give the average age, also, as it says a lot about herd health. To me, 41⁄2 years or more is outstanding.

WHY BE ONLY HALF PROTECTED?

We are trying to feed the world, but in most cases all they are doing is supporting the vets and hoof doctors, medicine, pills, plus drug companies of all kinds, plus many, many more things of that nature. Plus all the more government grants out there that are given to farmers of all kinds, whether it be crop or livestock of all kinds, it is being so misused in all different ways, even in smaller farms of all types. At one time we worked and saved maybe 5 years, so you could add on to something of a business, but now people want it now. If the bank says no, the government will say yes, and our government is already in debt way over its head. There is a limit to debt, people, no matter who you are. Some dairy farmers spend more money to get 20 lbs more milk per cow a day and lose 40 lbs of milk the other way, in money, because the milk price will go down. The system is so mixed up. It depends on whose hands it gets into. The more and more we confine livestock, the more and more diseases of all kinds will appear. The more and more that they push chemicals and artificial this and that, plus colorings, preservatives, and shots of all kinds to make animals grow faster, the more and more salmonella in meat will show up, and more cancer will show up in animals. But you see, a lot of animals don’t live long enough for it to show up in them in that short time frame, but it is still in their meat. Look at us humans, we live longer lives, but in our country, we have more and more cancer each and every day showing up. What good is cancer research when it is right in front of our eyes, how our food is grown and what is done with it after it is prepared for us. Take a look at what is put down the drain in the households across the country, it all goes in the water and wells and rivers. People have become so-called educated, spoiled and lazy in many ways. This might sound kind of harsh, but it is true. There is a limit, people, and we have gone way over. I have sold only one animal at the World Classic Expo sale, and that was about 12 years ago, a yearling heifer that sold for around $7000 and went to New York. She went on to be Honorable Mention All-American Milking Sr Yearling and a VG-87 two year old, then EX-91 at 3 yrs. She was then lost with a rare disease called West Nile and Lymes disease. I do not go to very many consignment sales for the last 8 years, they just don’t cut the mustard with me anymore. I have not gone to the World Dairy Expo sale for nine years. I like to see the real thing and not the fly-by-night things, whatever. Also, more and more different deals across the country, and not just with dairy cattle, life has gotten to be like a bunch of flies going into a hornet’s nest! If I was going to buy any purebred Holsteins this past year, I would have through the Tande Farm Disperal, Medford, MN; Lazy-A Holstein Dispersal, Gustine, CA; Rainyridge Dispersal, Laurier, MB, CAN, or Patience Holstein Dispersal, Listowel, ON, CAN, just to name some of the dispersals.

Live simply, love kindly, and care deeply. 1456 123rd St • Castalia, Iowa 52133 • 563-567-8484 Happy trails to you, Larry Finch • Owner • Manager • Herd Superintendent until we meet again.

ALADDIN*RC is one of the hottest RC bulls in the business, combining the modern pedigree of Shamrock with the longevity of SHOTTLE and the transmitting ability of Regiment Apple Red. That is why he is being used as a mating sire in the RW business and gaining in popularity every day. If you are looking for something a little different in your red and whites, let ALADDIN*RC light your way. 2013 has been a great year for our business, including record sales, adding several top proven and young bulls to our lineup and owning part of the Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair and Intermediate Champion at WDE. St. Jacobs wants to be the industry’s source for TYPE genetics, and we feel we’ve made great progress because of you, the customer! We would like to thank you all for your business and wish you a great holiday season and prosperous 2014.

The Perfect Christmas Gift...free! The perfect Christmas gift for everyone, and it’s free! Yes, millions have already gotten theirs! Have you gotten yours yet? You can’t find it at malls, online, or privately. It is never sold. What about a power source? Needs no batteries or electrical current. Never needs adjusting, never breaks down. Guaranteed to last forever. One size fits all? Yes What is it? Something you and I cannot earn, buy or inherit. All our sins erased off God’s record and eternal life forever in Heaven. What do I need to do? You say, “It’s too late, I am not perfect. I have sinned, I’ve lied, stolen, disobeyed my parents, taken God’s name in vain, committed adultery and looked at others in lust.” I was in the same plight 35 years ago and was scared to die. A dairy farmer customer gave me a gospel tract. It said, “All have sinned.” (Romans 3:23) That God loved me and sent his son Jesus Christ to be

born, and then die for my sin, taking all my sin away (John 3:16 & Romans 6:23, 10:9-10). I repented, turned from sin and self and asked God to take away my sins forever. This is possible because Christ’s blood was shed and He died on the cross for me. (Romans 5:8, 1st John 1:9) I got my forever gift that day. Later I got baptized as an adult and joined a Bible-preaching church. I read the Bible daily, love the Lord, and tell others about Him. How about you? Did you get your forever gift of eternal life yet? I urge you to do it today!

To our dairy customers everywhere: Thank you for your patronage, loyalty, support and excellent results. Looking forward to serving you in 2014. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
